Dublin doesn't have a lot of options when it comes to healthy and natural foods. I know this because I come from the states, where every grocery store has tofu, organic kale, rice milk and so on. I found that health food stores' selection here is really limited, and certainly lack the feel of a traditional grocery. So finding Fallon & Byrne really surprised me, and I felt sort of like I was stepping into a teeny Whole Foods (which is the best grocery store EVER and is a veritable paradise of orgasmically delicious food. London got one, come on Dublin please follow suit!!!!) They have tons of natural and whole foods, the produce is top quality and delicious and the prepared foods are reeeeally good. On the downside, they didn't have ANY faux meat, which I assumed were a staple at stores like this. In addition, it's really like, dramatically expensive. I couldn't really afford to buy anything... which made me kind of angry. It's fun to explore, but it would be cheaper to have my mom buy all my favorites and ship them from the states than to buy anything here. Sad. read more

Celebrated a friend's 21st (plus 9 haha) in Fallon & Byrne a couple of weeks ago and was really impressed by the fact that they offer a great set menu on a Friday night - €25.95 for two courses and €29.95 for three. I went for the Daube of Beef for my main and was actually served a steak with fries and a Bernaise sauce, after alerting the waitress to the mix-up I was told that I'd actually had the wrong menu (from the Taste of Dublin festival that had been on the week before) and that the only beef option on the actual menu that night was the steak that had a €7.00 supplement. The manager came to the table to apologise and said that the steak would be taken off the bill, which I thought was awfully sound of them, and I was only too happy to indulge in the free steak which was beautifully cooked and really well seasoned. In all honesty, the service was a bit off for the whole table, apart from the mix-up with my order, we were left waiting on drinks orders and some people's drinks never materialised at all but still appeared on the bill. The manager, in fairness to her, did sort out the bill for us, but it's a pity that the poor service did mar the experience a little. The food really was great and excellent value for money for a weekend night, my dessert was a little showstopper - chocolate mousse with a raspberry coulis, mini meringues and pralines - it was one of the best desserts I've had all year. Stopped in for some lunch with the in laws. I found that because it is a bank holiday weekend. There is a limited menu and the service seems to have also taken a holiday. It isn't the the food wasn't nice. It was that there was little things which annoyed me. The fact the the waters though that splashing water into the glass and then drips all over the table was a good service. That the burger I ordered while the burger it self was good the bun was burnt around the edges. And please someone tell me why there is a salad with my burger? Since Fallon & Byrne first opened their Exchequer Street grocery store/deli/wine bar/restaurant a decade ago, it's been my first port of call - and number one Dublin recommendation - for anything foodie related that's just a little bit out of the ordinary (stripey tomatoes, agave nectar, hen's teeth...you get the picture.) It's a gorgeous spot, but while I've often eaten in the deli or wine cellar, I had the impression that the first-floor restaurant was on the spendy side. I was delighted to be proved wrong when they invited me in to try out their new lunch menu: under the auspices of a new head chef, the menu ranges from €7.50 for light bites to €12.95 for a platter or €20/€25 for a two/three course set menu. From this latter, I picked an incredibly tasty roasted pear salad to start. Beautifully presented, the pear was stuffed with creamy cashel blue cheese and crunchy pistachio (I waived the bacon because of this fella here.) My dining companion, The Brunette, had the soup - I can't recall from which vegetables it was made, but like everything on the menu, it was seasonal, and pronounced spectacularly tasty. There were chestnuts! I just remembered that part; she especially liked the chestnuts. On to the mains, and I was immediately drawn to one of the pasta dishes, spaghetti genovese: with pesto, garlic, new potatoes, artichoke and pine nuts, this was an incredibly flavoursome dish and rivalled any I've eaten in Italy. The potatoes really lend it that added authenticity (I totally stole that line from our handsome French waiter.) Oh, and before I go on, a special word of tribute for the people. Not only was our waiter handsome and French (those two points bear repeating), but he was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu, as was everyone who served us. The maître d', Stephen, deserves special mention for his kindness. I called that morning about Missy, my new (to me) chihuahua, who'd been having a bit of separation anxiety (she's much better now), and he honestly could not have been nicer. She was allowed to come along in her little carrier, and was made quite the fuss of by the staff. By the end of our meal we were feeling lovely and relaxed in the light-filled, art deco inspired room - so while we waived dessert, we ordered up a round of Irish Coffee Martinis (Missy was on the dry), to send us on our way. Hi. I'm just leaving a matcha-related review. I regularly get matcha here in this place. A lot of places have been driven to madness with the sheer amount of quality I demand from their matcha. Fallon & Byrne have never dropped below a certain level of quality. A lot of other places have resorted to "matcha mix" sachets. What are these nonsensical things? This spot was recommended by two of our friends and a guidebook, so we knew it would be good. There are three parts to this place: The restaurant (upstairs), the food hall (street level) and the wine bar (downstairs). We didn't buy anything in the food hall, but it was pretty large and looked to have a wide variety of foods. We ate at the restaurant on a quiet night, so we ended up feeling like the wine bar would have been a better spot for us. There was a really lively, fun atmosphere going on down there and they had a wide selection of wine bottles on display. The food was good, and a great price. We got a multi course theatre menu. I got a salad and eggplant parmesan. My husband got the gazpacho and the Irish beef burger. The entrees were good, but we really enjoyed the appetizers. My salad stood out. I want to preface by saying we had a wonderful meal at Fallon & Byrne, but that our experience was overshadowed by something that occurred at the end of it. My husband and had had made reservations in advance for 6pm. When we go there, the restaurant was pretty quiet aside from a few other tables, and only was moderately busy around 7pm when we were finishing up. We were given the check and paid, and were sitting enjoying the last glasses of wine from the bottle we ordered when we were suddenly approached by someone who was not our waitress and were told, "I'm sorry, but we need this table, you're going to have to move. You can sit at the bar if you'd like." We looked around in disbelief, as there were many empty tables around us. Not to mention, there were 2 women at a table 2 down from us who were there before we arrived, and were still sitting and chatting with empty wine glasses in front of them, undisturbed. I kid you not when I say I had a full glass of wine left. My husband and I were so shocked, that we got up and left. I cannot believe a high end restaurant would ever treat a paying guest in that manner. We weren't even asked nicely or offered a free drink at the bar for our trouble. Never is it appropriate to kick someone out of their table, especially when they made reservations in advanced, there were other empty tables around them and we had just spent 100 euro at your establishment. My entire glass of wine went to waste. Needless to say we left Fallon & Byrne with a very sour taste in our mouths, and with no plans of returning or recommending it to anyone. I cannot believe I have never written about Fallon & Byrne; for any would-be foodie or just anyone who gets that thrill from entering an establishment that is, to its very core, a church at whose alter you can worship all that is consumable and (slightly) expensive, this place is a must. There are 3 levels: downstairs is a wine bar and wine shop where I have spent many many happy hours (on Mondays you can chose any bottle from the racks and enjoy there with no corkage charge), the selection is HUGE. - worth noting, there is no cell phone coverage down there, so you have an extra element of peace! the Supermarket on the Ground floor is lovely, stocking the rarer treats, all excellent quality and chosen to make you want to fill your basket many times over. At one point, this was the only other place you could get Mellas Fudge other than Sheridans... thankfully it has become a bit more available recently. The top floor is given over to a French style restaurant that does really very very good steak. Above the restaurant is a room given over to events - I went to an excellent wedding reception there a few years ago. read more

When I wanted to get a dear friend that was ill a quintessentially Irish gift I did not think of O'Carrolls. Her Parisian chic would not appreciate a tricolour tulip shaped hat nor the top 100 rebel songs. She's foodie but I wanted the sweetmeats to be Irish and obscure and here is where I found some great artisan chocolate from a place in Cork, the box and presentation was great! I couldn't resist getting some food from the salad bar for myself to go and the staff where so friendly and the assortment was too good! Fanciest supermarket in town. This ain't no Tesco or Supervalue no siree. This is the place you go to when you want the best ingredients for cooking that fancy dinner to impress whoever it is people want to impress these days. They have a massive butcher counter with pretty much every kind of meat you can think of; from venison to rabbit. They even stock whole quails.They also boast an impressive cheese counter which always has a queue wrapped around the entire store. This is also the only shop that stocks fresh whole jalapenos in Dublin (well as far as I know of anyway). They have lots of other kinds of chilies and other exotic vegetables. The only drawback for this place is the price. I suppose you do have to pay if you want quality, but I kind of feel like this place is a little more expensive than it needs to be for a lot of their stock. That being said, their meat is well priced and so are the jalepenos, which are usually what I go here to get. read more

Over priced and poor service. I just spent 15 minutes queuing at the meat counter while the staff served people who just arrived (it seems like the staff knew these people) were served ahead of us. I always want to like the food from Fallon & Byrne more than I do in reality. I've almost had the whole experience now, eating in the restaurant, eating in the deli bit and shopping there. I've never had the wine but I'm not a big fan of wine (no connoisseur for sure) and I don't plan on doing it anytime soon. I do like the shopping bit best although I think a lot of it is overpriced. I'm not rolling in money and I'm young so I guess Fallon & Byrne really isn't for my demographic. Nice for the odd thing though. The cheese counter is great if that's what you're into. I had an awful Christmas lunch here as well. It really wasn't my cup of tea at all. I wish it had been. I wish I could love you, Fallon & Byrne. One of the best gourmet supermarkets in the city center. Excellent selection of high-end produce, meats, fish, cheese and specialty goods. Extensive wine selection. Now for some of the great finds....imported bagels baked in New York City. Artisan Salt from the North of France. Smoked Venison Sausage. Rabbit and Quail for the grill. Pata Negra (acorn fed Iberian Ham). Freshly made Pumpkin Ravioli. And of course Lucky Charms from the New World General Mills factory. Expensive? Yes. But it's not like it's posing to be anything else, either. You know what you're getting yourself in to. I love this place, definitely not for the weekly essential groceries but for those more difficult to find specialty items. Following recipes from home can be difficult, I might get most of the ingredients from Tesco or Dunnes, but I can pretty much find the rest of the more rare items here. Lots of American goods that are hard to find anywhere else, my favorite being the baking section: butterscotch chips, peanut butter chips, Aunt Jemima syrup, crisco, all those terrible but delicious things you miss. Lots of import and gourmet type items (found my favorite Relish!) but also a great selection of produce that is a little more diverse than the big chain shops, there are probably almost a dozen different kinds of mushrooms here for example. Great selection of tea and chocolates (lots of organic and fair trade products) good selection of wines and specialty condiments. We even picked up some pre-made burgers (four different meat options to choose from) which were delicious, so was their chorizo sausages, great for the grill. Haven't tried anything from their cafe but everything looked great. Staff is friendly and helpful. When you want to splurge on nicer ingredients, or indulge in some comforts from home, this is the shop to visit. You know how picnic food always tastes amazing? Well in Fallon & Byrne's wine cellar, we munched on cheese and bread while popping grapes and swirling it all down with a sumptuous glug of red wine. Picnic-tastic with class. I was under pressure to choose the wine and, though I love a glass of red, I'm no connoisseur, so I chose the one with the longest name. As you do. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. A medium-bodied, earthy wine from Italy. Deliziosa. And €29 for the bottle. I think my date got a surprise when the bill came but that's what you get when you don't help a sister out. It was a busy Friday night so we were told to just grab a place if we could. My companion managed to secure two stools. Then we were ignored some more by the waiting staff and, when I finally got one of their attention, I was told somewhat snottily to give her a minute. We also had to shout in order to hear ourselves above the din of chatty diners. Overall, it was a great experience and it reminded us that the simple things in life are usually the sweetest. read more

Located in the trendy SODA neighbourhood of Dublin adjacent to Temple Bar and the Grafton St shopping neighbourhoods, it's a gastronomic delight! During my stay in Dublin I stopped in at least once every day for breakfast/lunch/snack/dinner/wine bar and shopping.... In addition to the fabulous wine selection both retail and in their bar/restaurant, the market offers a top notch butcher shop, produce,bakery and high end gourmet food section. In the rear the market, a cafe offers delectable pastries,breads,sandwiches and coffee/tea selections. Alongside is a display case of ready made healthy foods to choose from for either takeaway or dining for a mere 8.75 euros you can enjoy a gourmet feast and dine in at the small seating area while people watching through the large windows facing Exchequer St. The choices are overwhelming and the ample portions are enough to share. I savoured the Thai chicken curry served with fluffy basmati rice and snow peas and carrots. The curry spice blend in the sauce was just right! On return visits I opted for the lamb curry with chickpea & aubergine , rich and delicious and the lasagne, ample layers of high quality Irish beef, ricotta and parmesan cheese in a tangy tomato purée. Other choices that will keep luring me back include free range chicken kiev,pulled pork with bok choi & the veggie burger with sweet & sour salsa! Downstairs is the wine cellar offering a comprehensive selection of wine tasings, beer and a impressive food menu such as a mixed cheese & charcuterie board, warm brie wrapped in parma ham, baby spinach & frissé salad with honey mustard dressing,chilled poached salmon, Asian vegetable slaw, soy rice wine dressing and one of my favourites, the Mediterranean fish stew. One of the best fish stews I've had in my life, ample fish portions and vegetables served with a crusty baguette. The third floor boasts a fine dining restaurant and bar. On Mondays & Tuesdays they offer a 2-4-1 cocktail special. The Martini's are spot on! They offer an impressive prix-fixe and a la carte dinner menu. Right well as a student I'm pretty fussy about food in regards to prices but as a farmers daughter and a member of a foodie family it makes me a tincy bit fussy about the food I eat. Pretentious I know but I like knowing that my meat wasn't imported from some industrial sized farm in the Argentinian planes. Previously I only went in to use the deli on special picnic occasions or if mother dearest was with me....meaning I didn't have to use my valuable plastic money card. Then one day it fell on me to cook for a friend. Now I have this thing about Tesco's....let's call it a burning hatred of it. So while I was dashing through town to head out to the house, I nipped in to collect a few bits for what is now called "THE salad." I was expecting to be spending well into the 50 euro mark but I was pleasantly surprised when my basket of goodies only came up to the 20 euro mark. The food I'd bought was of good quality and perfectly ripe. Now moving on from the groceries section the generally dining in Fallon&Byrne is exquisite and I rarely use this word. I attended a friends book launch on the fourth floor, I think, where we were greeted by a champagne reception and carefully picked canapes that just hit the spot. The staff were polite and friendly and happily helped us find the floor to start with. Ordered a nice wine from California which immediately had me beaming - only 9 euro and a very good poor to top it off! I've had two meals here, several weeks apart with distinctly different results. On the first visit the food was excellent, the service efficient, and the price premium well deserved. It was solidly on our list of "let's visit again". For our second visit though, the food was mediocre to average, the service lax and it has dropped in our estimation considerably - we left feeling that the restaurant was not worth the price premium. It was as if we were at a different restaurant. The first impression was good enough that I would be willing to give the place another shot for dinner to see which version we get next time. An inviting speciality store..it is pleasent to visit this lovely exclusive shop and wander through the aisles looking for things you dont find anywhere else :) Their butcher section is impressive..I say that because I always buy my steak from F&B and I love when it just melts in your mouth... (the cook is an important aspect to the melting affect btw!) They have a specially prepared food section for eating-in or take-away :) They food if of high quality and high taste! On a slightly damp Sunday in Dublin this was an excellent place to have a good sit down and enjoy a decent lunch. Service was good and the cost was €20 a head for 2 courses. The portions are pretty large so we were able to share the starter of Goats tart and the Mississippi Pie and had our own main course...the benefit of eating with a friend who shares similar taste in food. My main course of Ribs was so big I could not eat it all ....but I did want to leave room for the pie. Ribs was the wrong word as there was not a rib in sight more braised and served with a great gravy and mashed potato. I wish I could shop here all the time. Unfortunately I am on a strict budget so I have to make regular trips to Tesco and buy only my fancy pants items here. To be fair, I find F&B incredibly inexpensive for all-organic and imported products. They carry quality products like puff pastry, various sugars, loose-leaf teas, delicious packaged desserts, and an excellent cheese counter. It's a bit like Whole Foods in the states only less snooty and non-commercial. What I love most about F&B is the "ethnic" food sections. Each little shelf is themed by the area of the world the food is from. One shelf is Asian food, noodles, teriyaki. Another shelf is whole peeled tomatoes, flavored olive oil, and tortellini. There's couscous, tajine sauce, and hummus. My favorite shelf by far is Mole mix, Scotch Bonnet hot sauce, and corn flour for homemade tortillas. F&B is the only store IN THE WORLD (outside of Chile) that I've seen them selling dulce de membrilla which I think is 'quince jelly' in English. Impressive. read more

A really cool concept for a store. The main floor is a grocery store specializing in organic quality foods. It has a busy cafe and prepared food section as well. Downstairs is a wine cellar (did not go down so I can't comment on this part) and upstairs a restaurant. I was there mostly for lunch and I can say it was quite good. The flavors went together really well and the selection of food is not just your standard choices that you can get anywhere. Presentation of the food was also nice. The cheese selection's beautifully aromatic (or, to use the colloquialism, smelly), there's enough sweeties to stop a child sleeping for days and fruit and veg that would make a health nut go bananas. The café upstairs is actually decently priced, and serves the kind of food that makes you realise that healthy stuff doesn't necessarily have to taste like, well, 'healthy stuff'. OMG. Antonio Banderas works behind the prepared foods counter!! Seriously, the place is gorgeous (as is Antonio! I'm sure he appreciates that I don't live anywhere within stalking distance) - a notch above Whole Foods for those who are familiar. Wish I had more time to look around. I'm struggling with the number of stars to give. I got a goat cheese quiche of some sort and a side of rocket salad. As I was picking through the greens, I noticed a 2 inch long BIRD FEATHER. I was stunned. My companion took it to show the staff who refunded my full meal cost within 10 minutes (I didn't ask for that, don't know if she did). Again, it was a surprise - it totally blended in with the lettuce so I can see how it might have gotten in there a long while ago. I'm just glad I didn't eat it!!! read more

Without a doubt one of my favorite places for food in town. Not only have they the best home made pesto ever but there great no corkage fee on the Monday nite is amazing. Although my work productivity on Tuesday morning has suffered greatly due to the intake of bottles (not glasses) of beautiful Italy Prosecco. Great value for a great product. We had a great meal at Fallon & Byrne during our recent trip to Dublin. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Our reservation was honored with a very nice table with a great view of the restaurant and the outside and a special birthday recognized at dessert. The food and cocktails were excellent. 5star for takeaway lunches. Come here regularly to pick up a sandwich. Nice selection, always the option of toasting. Little bit more pricey than regular sambo places, but they're a little bit nicer too! Good service, nice coffee. A nice change from a deli hot chicken roll for sure! read more

One of the main reasons I like to come here, is because they have a fairly good selection of American food items that I cannot get in stores. So, being that I often start craving my horribly processed, but oh so yummy foods, I come here fairly often. That being said, I really wish this store was set up a lot better. If they are even remotely busy, the aisles get cramped quite quickly and there is not a whole lot of space to move around. On top of that, they can be a bit pricey (although, the quality of the OTHER food items is really good.) BUT, the reason I write my review now, is because I recently ordered a sandwich while here with a friend. This was the first time I had used their food counter. I ordered my pesto, mozzarella, and parma ham sandwich. I was so excited, because this is one of my absolute FAVOURITE food combinations. However, my sandwich was given to another to person by accident, so I kindly waited while they remade another one. While I was waiting, after they remade the sandwich, and toasted it, it turns out they did it again. I ended up waiting for my sandwich for about ten minutes while the friend I was with already had hers. I understand that places get busy, and mistakes happen. I'll definitely try this place out again and try to account it to the fact that maybe someone new was working or that they were stressed out because they were busy. Hopefully the next time I'm in the service will be better. read more

I don't think I can say anything else people haven't already said. Wait- one thing. The American stuff is seasonal- namely, the canned pumpkin. That appears for about three weeks and is snapped off the shelves faster than they can reload them. Get it while you can when November rolls around. Once in a while they also have bags of Goldfish (y'know, the American cheesy crackers? guilty pleasure, and cheap for F&B standards at 3.75) and chocolate chips. Also always go there for my Aunt Jemima cornbread mix. I don't like that the shelves are in a constant state of organizational flux. I want to be able to find things in the same place all the time. But they seem to have settled down now. Ditto Joshua: you gotta dig for stuff sometimes. They have fruit and veg here that you likely won't find many other places on this island, from dragonfruit to aubergines the size of my little finger. In fact, they have an entire miniature vegetable section, from fennel to carrots to broccoli. The deli food is spot on. I've never had a sandwich- why would you, when you have so many awesome salads, other mains, and a soup of the day to choose from? The cheese counter is extensive, the selection formidable, and the cheesemongers knowledgeable. The meat and seafood counter looks great as well, though I haven't had a chance to try it. The variety of artisan chocolate producers is second to none, and you'll see flavours you never imagined people would put in chocolate. I haven't had many of the homemade dips (hummus, pate, etc) because they often sell others for cheaper; Eden brand hummus is really gorgeous. I have a friend who is a chef in the restaurant upstairs, and the dinner he served us was phenomenal. I think he also cut us a deal on the price...! read more

My review of F&B is for the restaurant, and not the supermarket deli... As all the reviews underneath show, the supermarket is (expense aside) head and shoulders above anywhere else in town in terms of choice and quality. For this reason, I find it even more disappointing to see that like Maeve below, the only thing on their lunch menu that appealed was a burger and chips... not really up there on the healthy eating most recommended..! Anyways, asked for it MW, it came out burnt on the outside and actually raw and cold on the inside.... the person I was with was nearly finished by this time, (Im a bit of an eat-the-salad first type) but he insisted I send it back - maitre'd said nothing, just took it. Burger came out about ten mins later, was cooked perfectly but unfortunately had lost my appetite by then! Really disappointing, and the two stars go to the really really apologetic waitress that was super-worried that I was going to be starving for the day :) read more

Not once but TWICE now F&B on Exchequer has stocked the hard-to-find ingredients I've been hunting for. And I DON'T mean just "Where can I find American Peanut Butter in Ireland," although those that eat the main-stream American versions tell me this is the place. No, it's been been deeper than that. As a serious home cook with a stock of personal recipes from the quintessetial culinary melting pot of California, I've needed some things as prosaic as good apple sauce (apparently a rarety here) and as exotic as Chipotle Chiles. F&B has stocked them when nobody, including specialty spice stores, have what I'm looking for. I wouldn't do my regular shopping here, but it's a good resource for a "foodie" cook who needs stuff. There's only been one consistent dilemma: I would prefer it if the staff had a better knowledge of what's on the shelves-I've asked and been told "I don't know" several times, so I end up prowling up and down the same aisles muttering to myself "If I was a smokey South American chile pepper, would I live with the asian spices on this shelf or the middle-eastern ones over there in the bags?" as I cruise the respective areas. Bottom line: If you don't mind digging around yourself, this is a good resource. Buy your exotic stuff, not your veg. read more
