Fallout Theater is a local gem of a theater that provides comedy relief and education for Austinites and visitors. The theatre runs shows on a nightly basis, usually after 7 or 8pm in the evening and simultaneously teaches a bunch of different comedy classes, including improv, stand-up, sketch, clown, and other one-off specialty comedy classes. Most of the normal classes run for approximately 8 weeks and are about 2 hours a week. The pricing for almost 16 hours of instruction is usually super reasonable (~$250 classes, or less than $15/hr). Most instructors are local Austin veterans and I've always enjoyed taking classes at the Fallout (at least for improv) and often end up being local community members that you'll see in shows or other comedy-related events. Shows are often affordable and a fun date night option that have different themes catering to anything you'd like. There's a small amount of snacks (candy) and a bar up-front for show attendees. Parking is relatively limited but not impossible to find. You can find street parking usually just one block north of the Fallout on 7th Street, 8th Street, Guadalupe, and Lavaca. read more

This place was incredible! We were here for a work conference and walked in on a Monday night and all the comedians were amazing. From the moment we walked in we felt welcomed and the vibes were immaculate. Could not recommend this place more and the upcoming talent. Comedy.... coooommmmedy... here boy... where are ya comedy... seriously get in here boy! Comedy get in here!! My wife and I attended a yelp event here. It was a 10:30pm show that went to midnight. We walked in and were pleasantly surprised... they had a small bar with drinks. After looking at reviews we thought there were no drinks... surprise! It's a limited selection but a great surprise all the same. After having a drink in the lounge area (we were early) we walked into the show space and found it to be very "intimate". A small stage and only about 120 seats or so. This really made for an up close and personal feel. The way good comedy is meant to be. Anticipation set in... Unfortunately this was not good comedy. It lacked comedy in a big way... it was a variety show... multiple performances/acts, and most of them fell extremely flat. I hate to bash any one brave enough to get up in front of people and expose themselves in this manor... but most of this event was a struggle. The MC tried (but came off just goofy), the acts were "different" (but unfortunately just not very funny), and the event was severely void of laughs. I will shout out to two of the acts though and say they were good... the pepper eating movie guys... tortured themselves for laughs... and it worked. Then the only true improv of the night the country rappers.... they were funny! They both deserve a larger part in the show as these two acts saved the night form a total bust! The venue is cool.. sound is good... and over all it should tee up for a great opportunity to be up close and personal with the acts... meaning great laughs! I do have one main suggestion for the venue... if you're going to bill the show as improv, you might want to have improve in the show?! Just thinking... ya know? Came for a comedy show and it was a nice way to spend Friday night. They do shows at 2 hour intervals all the way to 11:30pm. You can buy tickets online for $2+ cheaper or at the door. We got tickets through Eventbrite for an improv show and enjoyed the drinks and smaller, younger crowd. There are two arcade cabinets with games like Pacman & Streetfighter you can play while waiting for the show to start. They take cash, card, and mobile pay. Water is $2 bottled only. read more

This pains me to have to do this but you brought this upon yourselves. Looking online for something fun to do while my adult son and his partner were in town for the Holidays. I am a fan of stand up, improv, sketch and small funky theater so when I came across Fallout I thought perfect. I live almost an hour out of Austin. Purchased 3 tickets online over $55 I at least had expectations of something more than what ever this was. We got to the venue on time and ordered drinks. I ordered a hard cider and a couple house cocktails for the kids. The bartender cracked a 12oz can of cider, poured about six ounces in a small plastic cup to the brim and handed it to me. I tipped before realizing I got half a can. So what did he do with the rest of the $9 open cider can drink it himself? Hard not to spill this in the tiny plastic cup filled to the top. The other drinks were in 12oz cups WTH? The night went downhill from there. Doors open ten minutes after showtime we find seats and wait another 15 min. There is a small couch and two chairs on stage and the host? announces the nights performers? Here is what we got. All four sit and the host tells us we are in for a special night that instead of having an act or doing material they are going to tape their podcast live and we are here to watch. No clue who any of them are, what the name of the podcast is, where it's played and for who, why or how it will relate to what we were sold as the show. Comedy, improve, sketch or at least one of them? I felt taken hostage as the next 45 minutes consisted of the equivalent of being at a strangers house being forced to hear about their vacation to Nebraska minus any interesting slide photos. References to people no one but them know that seemed to crack themselves up but had no context to the audience. Lucky for the host sound board they could add the laughs and applause themselves. If I felt it would not have embarrassed my kids and those on stage I would have just left rather than endure what ever this was. Of the four there was one who dominated the dialogue dropping F bombs and trying to be edgy while making racist remarks about his trip to Japan and then asking what? is that racist? The host did nothing to move the show forward and the other two sitting on the couch had next to nothing to say other than a story about finding acid in her house she thought she lost. Okay? is there an amusing story behind that? Sadly no. Eventually they ran out of things to talk about and the host was left filling the rest of the show by bringing out a book he found at the bookstore he works at. The book was "would you rather" so now it was ten minutes of would you rather have small eye and big ears or vice versa. For God sakes you are improve comics charging good money to entertain you could at least have some amusing answers! Okay I know this has turned into a rant but if it saves just one person from suffering as we did than I have done my duty for society. I get know why it is called the Fallout because when you bomb this hard you need some shelter. read more

I came here for the show naughty bits, which is hosted by Nikita Redkar and Katie Stone. It was my first time seeing a comedy show live and it was fun! The place is small but it has a hip vibe to it and feels intimate. The comedy show itself was alright. Some jokes were hit or miss but I suppose but it had a fun atmosphere. I still felt like I had a good time and it was worth my while. I really liked the concept of hosting various local comedians as some are like hidden treasure. Their style is unique and different from the comedians I've seen on TV. I would love to come here again! I attended a show on Saturday night. I was excited and it looked promising per other yelp reviews. My husband and I showed up a little early but they have a small lounge area that is just as intimate once inside the main area. We were allowed into the main area once the other show let out. We showed our passes and found seats. My husband and I scored a seat in the back row. There is honestly no bad seat in the house. Which is always a great thing. Overall the skits were hit or miss. I thought the host was very entertaining and engaging with the audience. I was a little surprised at not seeing more interacting with the audience. I also know they do different shows so maybe this one is less interacting? I think it helps to have a few drinks prior or during the shows. The first part of the show was not as entertaining to me compared to the second half. I would definitely love to check out another show here again. read more

The Sandbox was okay, but not hilarious. To be more specific, some of the sketches and performers were on point like the Red Hot Movie Peppers and the host Rob himself. Rob's wife was funny at times but Stone Cold's opening was weak and the music guy was not funny at all in my opinion. Just my two cents. Alright TNM!! So I came back for some improv and there were 2 groups that performed. They were hilarious. Literally had the whole place cracking up. Very witty and they were quick on their improv. I'm amazed at how they do it. They let the audience pick a topic and they just went for it and executed it well. The space was different. Looks more like stadium style seating circling the stage instead of just front and center. There's a lot more seats too. Still byob and prices at the door are still beyond cheap. This is a very small but very intimate theater setting and I luv it!! It is BYOB except on certain nights but they do sell snacks and water etc. and provide ice and cups if needed. The staff is very friendly. I saw a very good comedy show here, Queer Queens of Comedy and can't wait to go back for something else. Every seat is up close and personal to the stage. A small and quaint comedy club with a revolving set of talented folks grinding it out nightly to hone their craft. The seating is stadium styled with individual chairs. They offer improv classes as well as having regular nights of themed entertainment. I came here and watched "When we were young" as a set of comedians put on a good show, then they display questionable and fun pictures from their youth and the hosts and others get to give them good ribbing about them. (I think we've all had THOSE pictures from our youth that we question as we got older...) The New Movement is perfect for what it is: a hole in the wall with some great talent. Unassuming is great way to describe this place. It kind of reminds me of my college friend's party basement: BYOB and it's as fun as you make it. Outdoor lights and stacking chairs? Done and done. A band playing in the cramped space by the front door? Check. The lawyer that rocks as a guest? You betcha. We had family in town for the holidays and I googled "what to do in Austin on Wednesday night". Here. You go here on Wednesday night! We saw two improv shows and they both were great. You donate however much you want at the door and it is BYOB. They even were giving away free beer during the first show. The first show was called Garage and it was an all-female improv comedy. They were great! The 2nd show had different comedians and they were talented as well. The venue is super small so the comedians are right in front of you. I once left a review about The New Movement when it was under Chris, Tami, and the other investor(s). A lot of negative experiences there that I won't rehash again but overall the classes were amazing because of the people who actually ran the classes. With this in mind, my current review is about those people who now run and own Fallout Theater. I personally know the people involved and I can honestly say that they are one of the most genuine and talented people I have ever met. Everyone involved in the community is doing what it can to bring a safe and positive experience to the community that's just there to have a great experience. In summary, I completely adore the Fallout Theater, the people involved, and the services/shows they offer and perform. All around great fun and now a much better and safer place to be. BYOB and improv. Why not? I don't quite know all the rules to improv, but we went for the Opposites show on a Wednesday night. The folks performing with their class make you realize no matter how funny you think you are, this stuff is hard. The two guys that host Opposites are pretty funny and show you what it's like to see improv done by folks that have worked at it. It was all engaging enough that the hour plus we were there flew by. Go support some local folks. Their location has changed from the previous east side digs to the basement of the Masonic Lodge at 7th and Lavaca. There's plenty of room to not feel crowded, but all close enough that it's intimate. Use the bathroom somewhere else though. These folks are actors, not janitors. read more

I went to a Yelp Elite Event here on a Saturday and had a good time, the comedy was quite funny for "not-improv improv." The bar had a few select cocktails that were not bad and had a few beers and wines. It is a small venue so the performers are like RIGHT in front of you. The emcee Rob was great and kept things moving. The place is a little rundown but it's a comedy place so it was kind of what I expected and it was pretty cool. I would go back to see it. I thought the music guy was really funny and Stone Cold was pretty funny. The Hype Guys were not funny to me at all. Rob's wife was pretty funny and high as a kite but did good impersonations. Went to Sure Thing last night and had a blast...small theater (maybe 75 total?) made with love, grit and kick-ass ethics. The setting is a basement off of Lavaca between 6th and 7th with a DIY aesthetic and a staff that is friendly and helpful. The show itself was all over the place but genuine. There is a small bar (cash and card) and the dude behind the counter was fast and friendly. I'll definitely be returning to see other shows here. Job well done. read more

I recently finished taking Level 1 Improv classes at The New Movement theater and it was awesome. It's a great investment and a fun experience for all ages. Now, giving you a glimpse of a fun warm-up game we played at the beginning of every class, here's... 7 Things I Love About The New Movement Theater! 1. The venue is intimate yet professional and has sparkly lights! YES! 2. My classmates were so positive, creative, encouraging and fun! YES! 3. They have many levels (I think 5?) of classes, shows every week and free nights where you can try out your improv skills! YES! 4. My instructor Amy was so fun and positive and excelled at teaching us the ways of beginner's improv! YES! 5. Making up scenes about depressed clowns and crazy road trips and suspicious doctor relationships and minions of destruction ferrets was never so fun! YES! 6. Know this going in: they're very funny here. The way that the room sets up and the rapport between the players is both friendly and palpable - they're very giving to one another onstage (meaning, essentially, that they're open to the possibilities that come from ceding the spotlight to one another), and there were a few situations that happened within the span of a couple of hours this week on stage that found troupe members laughing so hard at one another that they could scarcely contain themselves. That in itself is a bit of a gift, and that the audience gets to hop along for the ride? A bonus. I stopped by and sat in the hot seat for one of the Wednesday night performances, and it's sort of hard to do that without some navel gazing: the format is one where they have a guest share three stories, and proceed from there to sketch nuances of those stories to tears afterward. There's tons of creative license, and it's a riot to watch if you've not seen this kind of thing recently. The improv sets are tight (at least they were this night), and the audience really seemed to respond to them. I will say that should you ever end up in the spotlight, bear in mind that the actual story isn't the fodder here - the devil is in the details of your description, and as such, your mileage may vary. I'd be curious to head back for improv or stand up or open night events that they hold, and the bones of the room are such that I can imagine those would be fun experiences too, albeit ones not yet in my rear view. But for now, what we do have is a memorable start. read more
