We came here after Esther's Follies, with the program from Esther's you get in free and just have to find a seat, we took seats on benches along the wall as most of the tables were taken as the stand up had already started. We caught the last joke or two of one of the openers then the headliner came on, TJ, On twitter as @tjstandup and has a special on Amazon called Weapon of White Destruction and a tour called The Colonizing America tour. Dude was incendiary (to use my wife's term) and funny, My wife and I were laughing for most of his set and the guy at a table in front of us almost never stopped laughing. The place is small and a long time fixture here in Austin, you order drinks from a QR code at the table but no minimums drink limits which is nice. It is a fun stop and you never know who you will see or what style of comedy you will get. read more

Had a great time at the Velveeta Room, and it was only $10 for entry. No minimums on drinks. Service was friendly. It is a dive-y, intimate venue that sits about 50 people. I don't think they have major headliners here, but there are a bunch of amateur comedians, local comedians and small act traveling comedians visiting the Austin area. Overall, a great time here if you keep an open mind to the new talents on stage. read more

This is a cozy, intimate, little comedy room tucked into the back of Esther's Follies. It does have its own entrance though, and you don't need to go to an Esther's Follies show to come here; although, if you DO see an Esther's Follies show, you can watch comedy here for free immediately after the show via the connected entrance. It's also apparently the oldest comedy venue in Austin! I saw a handful of comics on a Saturday night, and overall had a great time. The host/MC was hilarious and fun. The first ~3 "openers" each did about a 7-minute set. None of them were great, but they were brief. The headliner (Tre Tutson) as well as the guy right before him (Kenjamin Alonzo) were great! Good at reading the room, lots of laughs. The bar wasn't crowded and we got drinks right away, which was awesome. They also have little QR codes on the tables, so you can order from the bar during the show without having to interrupt the set, and someone brings your drinks to the table. Also great! Seating is open if you have a ticket. You can choose your table. I definitely recommend coming here, whether you're with a date or a group of friends. read more

If you're staying downtown, this is a quick trip to visit, and worth the effort. Unless you don't like live comedy. It's small and cozy, there really isn't a bad seat in the house, in my opinion, and was comfortable seating. The comics, when we were there, we're quite good, and reasonably priced. Three, including a humorous MC. Drinks were pricey and tasty. No minimum called. Nice surprise. Unless you're bold, get a ride. At night, that end of 6th can seem rough. I had a blast here! It's only $10 bucks and worth it if you like little local spots. I travel a lot and i avoid touristy places and i love to support local businesses. The Velveeta Room is a cute small joint to get a few laughs from comics trying out some new material, or trying it out to see if they can hit it big. I wouldn't go in there expecting a major headliner, just go in with an open mind and give these comics some laughs and help them get them their start. It's right on 6th street so after the comedy club there's a ton of great bars and clubs to go to for the rest of the night. Great location and intimate vibe. read more

The comics were not funny at all. I realize they are amateurs, but this was a waste of time. Also most of the audience were just comics waiting to go up on stage, there were no actual customers, I guess people know how bad this place is. Disgusting and a rip-off! I was told by one employee that we could get in free with our Esther's admission, then another guy came up and yelled at my sister and charged her $70. She paid it because I was in the restroom and she was embarrassed. Then we sat and listened to graphic overweight sex humor until we all wanted to throw up. I would have been so humiliated if I was on a date or something. It may have been a bad night, but it didn't get better. It was also like 60 degrees inside and we were miserable and felt ripped off. read more

Amateur improv comedy. What a great experience of a bunch of juniors dishing out a few lines. The staffed asked to keep heckling to a minimum if not at all. I'm not sure if they were doing that so that the comedians didn't lose interest in the activity, or they are just comedians not at the level prepared to dish jokes back on the spot. It didn't really matter to me it was a fun experience Chelsea kept getting the shush noise since she semi-heckled lol. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this event then dealing with all the dirty bars on 6th street. After going to an amazing show at Ester Follies next door they directed us to Velveeta Room entry for free. I was so hyped up from the comedy/musical show that I was like yay more comedy! It was a Thursday evening which was amateur night (not sure if this is always.) People were going on for 5 minutes at a time (which was good) because no one was funny, at all. I felt like the people that were laughing in the audience were friends/family. We stayed for maybe 30 minutes and moved on. I bet its better when they have comedians that don't have to read cue cards. read more

I went to a comedy show there pre-COVID. It's a very intimate venue and the servers were top notch.

A long time Austin Comedy staple for late night laughs. Comics are regulars here and make this place the comedy gem that it is. The showcases almost always sell out so get tickets early also sometimes out of town acts stop in for a surprise set so you never know who can just randomly show! The Velv is always a part of the major Austin comedy festivals with big name acts but also has weekly open mics for those getting their start. More often than not you can catch some damn good shows here no matter who's up. In short I love this place very much. read more

Where to start, where to start . . . Ok, let's get the negatives out of the way: the website sucks in a big way. There's almost no information on there, which in this day and age is just freakin' ridiculous and annoying. My grandmother has a better webpage. And from what we could tell, you can't pre-reserve tickets online or over the phone. It's "box office" (guy with a sharpie) sales only. But for $5, it's tough to complain about much (although I always give it my best effort!). The service was good and not disruptive. The acts were very hit or miss, but the ones who "hit" did so in a big way. By the time one of the comedians was done, I wanted to marry him . . . too bad I can't remember his name. LOL. The emcee seemed a little nervous and stoned, but he gave it his best. And I kinda like the contrast of the not-so-good comedians compared to the great ones. It felt more "real" than seeing an already-established comedian . . . kinda like checking out a new local band. They might suck, but discovering that is all part of the fun. No need to get there too early - 15-20 minutes should be plenty. And don't try getting there before 9, because they won't be open yet. So I would actually like to go back! Wow, mine is the first review, so it better be a good one! I first started going to the Velv (as insiders call it) because my boyfriend-of-the-time wanted to try stand-up comedy. Well, try it he did, going up for Thursdays' open mic nights week after week. It's a little difficult writing a review for a spot where the entertainment is always changing, but I guess the fact that I keep going, even though the ex and I are long since over, is a sign that there's something worth going back for. I think the Velveeta Room tends to get overlooked, in lieu of Esther's Follies right next door. I've never seen a show at Esther's, so I can't make a comparison, but I can say that if you're looking for something different on the weekend, the Velv might be it. It's only $5 cover, it's a cool place to take a date, and you're almost guaranteed to laugh. If you like comedy, that is. And who doesn't? read more

I'll admit it's been a while, and I was underage at the time, but the Velveeta Room struck me as little more than plain-old cheesy. We went on a night of semi-scheduled performers and semi-open mic, if I recall. I was totally enamored of my then-boyfriend, so I had a good time hanging out with him, but neither we nor the rest of the mixed (young, old, but mostly older) audience (except a pair of drunk, drunk drunks up front) were thoroughly entertained, and there was little room for chitchat between acts or during, it felt. Plus, some of the guys were downright offensive, and I try not to be hypersensitive when it comes to comedy. Perhaps if I went on a night when (a.) I could drink, and (b.) the entertainment was actually funny, I'd have appreciated it more. Oh, and I had this semi-stalker a while back who insisted I was an idiot for not thinking he was a riot -- after all, his jokes got people giggling at the Velveeta that one time he performed. After doing a 6th street bar crawl the night before where 3 friends left their CCs at three different venues this was a perfect alternative for a more low key evening. It's only a $5 cover every night and the drinks are cheap. The MC (also the winner of the Alamo Drafthouse Air Sex competition) was hilarious. read more

Small, intimate venue to see some charming local comedians. Its your usual comedy club set up with tiny tables with candles, and a sweet waitress quietly working the room while you watch your show. The show we saw was "ok", but you never know what you're going to get. The venue itself is super cute, our waitress was extremely good, and the bar served up a tasty amaretto sour (or three). We sat along the wall, which was slightly awkward (had to turn my body away from the table and turn around every so often (or very often) to fill up on adult beverage. So, if you get any say in the matter, ask fro the left side seating, or get there early. The stage was well lit and the sound system worked very well. Most of the comedy was good or great, and overall, a very nice time and a nice start to our evening on 6th. read more

This is a nice little place, right on sixth street next to Esther's Follies. I got in here for free as I bought the ticket to Esther's follies. I don't imagine the entry would be too expensive though. They do have a full bar, but no draft beer (only bottles). Beer wasnt too expensive either ($4.5+tip), so not bad at all. Ambience is average. There were 3 comedians performing (roughly for 20m each) the night that we were there (Saturday night). The place is not too crowded and you can easily find a spot to sit. The comedians were local and some were travelling from neighboring cities. They were really good and interacted with the crowd well. I didn't hear any repeat/stolen jokes, so all the material seemed new. I'd definitely recommend this place if you want to share a laugh, avoid noisy dance clubs and enjoy a fun evening for not a lot of $$$. read more

This was my first experience at the Velveeta Room and I will never go back. The venue is nice and intimate, however the comedians were some of the worst I have ever heard. Their jokes were simply NOT funny. If you think a joke about the KKK having a pinata in the shape of a black man that they leave hanging there is funny this is the place for you. I don't see the need to subject myself to this type of tasteless crude humor and suggest that if you have a decent bone in your body you will avoid at all costs. read more

Best return for $10 I spent the whole weekend. I'm sure it depends on the comics, but our headliner was non stop laughs. The host/opener and 2nd comedian were great as well. 3rd comedian's act was a dud, but you can't win them all. The place didn't fill up quickly and isn't the largest venue, which worried me some. Glad it was for naught. Also allowed us to get our choice of seats before more people started to come in. Definitely a perk of a smaller venue. Megan our waitress was great checking on everyone without interrupting the show. Drink prices were reasonable. Not sure how well stocked the bar was, but a few beer options and could make some cocktails at least. If you want drinks though there is everything from places with decent beer to whisky selections just down the street. In summary, If you want some cheap entertainment and laughs this is a good choice. At $10 a seat can't hurt to try it out. . read more

Esther's Follies is the incredible comedy show and political satire next door. Perhaps I went on a poor night, but the Velveeta Room felt just average to me and the space was kind of small. Maybe after going to Esther's Follies and laughing until I couldn't breathe, the amateur comedians in the Velveeta room just couldn't beat Esther's Follies. Never the less I DO recommend this place if you go to Esther's follies. Take your FREE ticket and check out the comedian inside. If he/she is good then stay and have a drink. It would be a nice way to complete a night of music and comedy. However, I went on a bad night and order a drink so I had to sit through several subpar comedians. If you come in with the free Esther's Follies ticket then don't order a drink right away, make sure that you like what you hear first. The space is also kind of small, so don't go there if you are not a big fan of small spaces. read more

I literally never stopped laughing. My cheeks hurt because I was smiling so much. We we're there during a comedy festival and heard comedians from all over the country. Great drinks, great A/C and great jokes. The staff was so nice and helpful. We showed up with no tickets 4 minuets before it started and got amazing seats. I'd give zero stars if I could. I went here with a group of 5 people for a good time. We had a few drinks beforehand and had one drink before being kicked out by management. One of the acts was sitting being us and complained. I have always been a respectful guest and was shocked when we got our first warning. We remained quiet except for clapping/laughing but received a second "get out now" warning. I will not be back to the Velveeta Room. read more

Went to this place last Thursday, open-mike-night. Here's what I observed. Plenty of stand-up volunteers, which is good; most are not funny, which is bad. The few that were funny were funny mostly because they are just unique, quirky people; it was like those people just couldn't help being funny. The people who were trying too hard to be funny just simply weren't. I felt a sense of camraderie and togetherness there, which was really cool.
