That's a negative and a positive, but mostly a positive. Look. This motel has been serving people for over 70 years and it SHOWS. But I LOVE the vintage wood and the cool retro tile in the bathroom. I wish there was more of it tbh. The rate is decent for the area. $75 a night for two double beds and Owners seemed friendly on the phone. They have good check in procedure. They were accommodating on my late check in. The bad: Okay. I've been to a lot of these mom and pop roadside motels and I expect a little bit of grunginess. This one just crossed over my threshold of forgivable dirt and I think it just needs a good cleaning. See, most of the visible areas were clean. The beds were mostly clean, the floors were decent. Shower was clean as was the toilet. But the more hidden areas had a layer of old dirt that was simply beyond what I can forgive, even for a roadside motel. I've been to a lot of these old motels and while a lot of them are OLD, they usually take special care to clean them. This one...ehh. Not so much. A few of the towels were literally black and totally stained and need to be replaced. The wall in the bathroom needed a good wipe down. These are easy and inexpensive fixes. So all in all, not bad. Not great either. About average, hence my rating.

The motel was doing its best to go "back to normal" but sofas and chairs were marked as no use from the COVID rules. The breakfast was skimpy, but as I stayed it filled out more. COVID restrictions being lifted and all. The front desk check-in was easy, and the lady behind the counter was very nice, but she seemed very nervous as well and I had to pry information out of her, like when was breakfast, was there a laundry room, wifi connection instructions, etc... Again, she was very friendly but seemed flustered. My room was on the 2nd floor and there is not an elevator in the place. The nice lady offered to help me with my bags, but I said I had it handled. My room was large and clean. a tad worn but spacious. Nice TV, and nice lighting. Plug-ins were a bit lacking but I made do. They give you the choice of how often the maid comes to your room, I guess because of COVID? I chose every other day. Towels are small. I have a 38" waist and it barely wraps around me. They are thin too. The bed was a King and it was sort of comfortable. Heat and AC worked well. The fridge was cold and the microwave worked too. One Ice machine in the lobby and I believe pets are allowed. There is a fire pit and patio chairs at the far end of the motel but it seems like those are taken by frequent travelers who smoke and drink beer.

We received a call from our kids that have a small farm in Black River Falls and our son was in the hospital and they needed help taking care of the stock. So we did what parents do and jumped in the RV and headed to Wisconsin .....in March. There were NO RV parks open until May and we were a lot worried we would get there with no place to hook up. We gave Theron a call and he said there was nothing to worry about, he would take care of us, and he did! What a pleasure it has been. We survived the worse snowstorm of the year and Theron was there to make sure everything was working and we were comfortable. We will definitely be back to stay when we come to visit the kids. McSweets is the Sweet Spot in Black River Falls!
