What a fun nightlife spot! If you're looking for a fun place to grab cocktails, this is definitely a spot worth checking out! **Located inside Craft & Commerce Walking into False Idol honestly feels like you've been transported somewhere else. It's hidden behind Craft & Commerce, and once you step inside, the immersive tiki atmosphere really sets the mood. The decor, lighting, and sound effects all come together to make the experience feel fun and memorable. Just know, if you are hoping to sit down, good luck! A lot of reservations are made in advance. However, at the bar, if you see a reservation sign and they're not there yet, staff will let you sit down once it's time to get up for the reserved party. DRINKS: 9/10 The cocktails were creative, well crafted, and definitely strong enough to make you feel like you were getting your money's worth. I also loved how much attention they put into the presentation. Every drink looked like a piece of art and added to the whole tiki experience. SERVICE: 9/10 The staff were friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. They took the time to answer questions and made great recommendations without making us feel rushed. AMBIANCE: 10/10 This is easily the highlight of the experience. The entire space is beautifully designed, and every little detail makes it feel like you've escaped into a hidden tropical bar. It's cozy, intimate, and unlike any other place I've been to in San Diego. Reservations are definitely worth making since the space is on the smaller side and fills up quickly. The only reason I'm giving 4 instead of 5 stars is that, while the experience and ambiance were amazing, the drinks are definitely on the pricier side. I understand you're paying for the craftsmanship and atmosphere, but it's probably not somewhere I'd visit regularly because of that. It's common for tiki bars to be pricey so it was to be expected. Overall, I'm really glad I finally got to experience False Idol. If you're in San Diego and enjoy creative cocktails in a one-of-a-kind atmosphere, I'd definitely recommend checking it out at least once!
Went here with advance knowledge of the place during our PHX to SD whirlwind vacation to see Bob Dylan at the Rady Shell. Had to put in our names, as there is only so much space on an early Saturday evening. Took all of 10 minutes before entry was granted. Led inside to a standing room-only table. Lady friend got the Saturn, myself the 151 Swizzle. I probably did the wrong thing and didn't allow the ice packed on top of the swizzle to melt thoroughly enough into the drink to dilute the 151 overproof black Demerara's rum. Nae worries, brah. It was delicious. Affordable tiki-theme cocktails, decor(!) and atmosphere is why this place will remain popular and a must visit when in Sandy Eggo. Top notch!
This place is hidden inside Craft & Commerce which is a quirky little bar itself. There was a wait for entry this past Sunday after 9pm. Staff was also not very attentive to guests' needs, rather just going through the motions. For instance, they noted "standing room only" and that they would eventually seat our party of two. They walked us to an exact spot on the floor to stand and view the menu in the dark (we used our phone flashlights, but it wasn't easy while carrying our belongings too), and they instructed us not to order at the bar in this colorful but dimly lit tiki lounge. We essentially ordered from staff who took our order in the middle of the floor, then we had to hold our drinks, some that came with additional shot glasses, in full hands, as we were never seated. We did find a barrel to set our drinks on later, but their process and expectations for guests was just really weird and impractical. The theme and decor of the setting was lovely, with moments of a lightning and thunder effect that made the experience more immersive. But we were not impressed by the sticky menus and sticky floor, nor the lack of service and minimal help from staff while there. We made the most of our time at False Idol regardless of their shortcomings. The bombay sling and enigma de muerte were pretty decent in quality and flavor, so it's safe to say the drinks aren't the problem here. And though we probably won't return, it was cool for a one-time experience.
We LOVED this spot Drinks were all amazing - sidewinders fang was my favorite - I love passionfruit and it was so good! The interior is super immersive - huge tiki vibes with sound effects included too Def get a resy bc it's not super large and gets busy fast - we walked in around opening time and were able to sit at the bar Service was great / bartenders are so nice and even gave us stickers
Ambiance was amazing, it was like I was in a cave! Great customer service, there was a bit of a wait to get inside and then get a drink order but it was worth it. The drinks were yummy, the Mai Tai was really strong too! I came on a Sunday evening so parking was a bit challenging but I had such a great time. So glad my friend and I made the trip
They don't serve food here anymore. But the service is very nice. The ambience is like as if you were at Disneyland, which means you're having the best day ever and it's all fun.
My wife and I went on a limb and tried to make a last minute reservation but couldn't snag one. So we showed up an hour before our dinner reservation in Little Italy to try our luck -- best decision yet! We were told we could go in but it was going to be standing only. We went for it, ordered some drinks and really only stood for maybe 15 minutes before the hostesses came back and got us set up at a barrel with two barstools. That kind of attentive service right there set the tone for the whole visit! The mai tais are absolutely delicious. Not too sweet, ice cold, refreshing, and strong (word to the wise ) Exactly what a tiki cocktail should be. And the vibes and ambience are amazing! This place is the real deal. Worth the effort to get in however you can!
False idol is a tucked away Hawaiian themed speakeasy behind a restaurant. Reservations are required so be mindful of that before going. Once inside seating is first come first served so the place is insanely crowded with people trying to get drinks. Service is a little confusing as the waiters will come up to you with a menu asking for your order instead of an order at the bar type of thing. Once we actually got a seat things were okay. The menu is mostly rum drinks since this is a rum bar however since I'm not the biggest fan I ordered the only thing with tequila on the menu. My drink was actually really good, it was refreshing, not too sweet or strong at all. I just wish there would be more variety.
My False Idol experience was memorable, albeit blurry toward the end! My boyfriend and I had been on a half-day tour beforehand, but I saw that False Idol was near our hotel and I insisted we stop in for a cocktail before calling it a night. I knew it was a speakeasy but he did not. I was trying to double-check on my phone that Craft & Commerce was the right restaurant its housed in (yes) when he tried to jet set off down the block "to keep looking" rather than listen to me. I yelled, "MOTHER!" by accident and then he did truly leave me hahaha. He resurfaced a few minutes later, and then we walked in. It was 5:15 at the time, so 15 minutes after opening. I had NO IDEA how popular this spot was, nor anything about its nation-wide reputation. I actually didn't know that until two days ago when a Yelp-friend at home here in Richmond, Virginia, exclaimed excitedly when I told her we stopped in. The host who greeted us was kind, informed us there had been a line to get in that day, but that they had one barrel left; we jumped on it of course. It was happy hour, so the first cocktail I ordered was dirt cheap at $9. It was the Imperial Hawaiian with gin, rum, lemon, pineapple, and orgeat. I really shouldn't have ordered a second drink after that one, but I did have the classic Saturn later on in the night and it was absurdly good! Definitely my favorite of the two. The moody tiki vibe was so cool and fun. They even had frogs you could play on the tables. We had some fun neighbors too, which livened up the experience even more. We had a great time and both walked out heavily buzzed. We were asleep by 8 that night, but it was worth it!
False idol is a cute tiki bar and very aesthetic especially in the inside room. There was a line on a Friday especially for the inside. The lighting is perfectly dim and the colors inside are cute for pictures. The frozen tiki rum drink we got was very strong and very cold but good. It was also huge.
Who doesn't love a False Idols Experience, it's hard to get in there occasionally and sometimes have to suck it up and deal with standing room. But If you're a Tiki Lover you have to add this Bar to your trip, it's a true gem and honor to the tiki world, overall experience, smell and vibe is top notch. The cocktails never fail to hit and I'll always stick around to have a zombie before hitting the next spot! False Idols for the win!

Came to San Diego for 2 specific places, The Zoo and False Idol. I have to say the decorations here are killer, it's a blast to look around at all the art. The entrance was totally bizarre being inside another restaurant, cool but bizarre. We were able to arrive an hour before our reservation and snag a bar seat, love that! The staff was super friendly from start to finish, but I have to say, all of the drinks we had were not really what we expected. This is still a great a bar, but the drinks were really unbalanced for us, everything was super heavy on citrus. Still a great experience but if you are used to high caliber tiki bars it was just weird to find these so unbalanced. I feel like I got abused by the lord of citrus. Maybe going to Mothership right before see the SD standards to high. Idk.

This fun speakeasy in little Italy is a great spot to have a few delicious drinks. Our waitress was great, super helpful assisting us on drink decisions. The drinks themselves were wonderful and had great balance. We actually made it for happy hour and were able to try several from the menu. Remember to make your reservations early as walk ins are on a first come basis. read more

Breathe taking fully immersive experience and for a bar it is extremely unique. Reservations are encouraged it is fairly small but you are not cramped like sardines. It checks all the boxes dark, romantic, fun and strong drinks. I felt like I was in Adventure land at Disneyland the vibe was super cool. We tried (4) drinks the Mac Nut chi chi, Ube Bae, Trade Winds, The Missionarys Downfall. The Mac Nut chi chi and the Ube Bae is delicious sweet and the rum is very smooth and unassuming. But it hits just give it a few minutes. The Trade winds is very lemony and smooth but on stronger side. The Missionarys Downfall is light and minty and tasty but the apricot is hardly noticeable, but still 10/10. I can't wait to come back and bring my friends! This was an amazing experience and definitely recommend it to everyone. read more
Reservations required! I booked the first slot at 5pm a full month in advance to ensure I snagged a spot for my hubby's birthday kickoff. We had 3 drinks each which left us nice and wobbly at the end of our 90-minute maximum stay but ready to continue forward and onward into the weekend. My favorite drink was the Juicy Jay because it was only $7 on the HH menu and it was very creamy and heavy on the macadamia nut. It was basically the same as a Nut Chi Chi but half the price and had a bit more of a citrus touch to it. The Planter's Punch was also sweet, vibrant and went down just like juice. False Idol is an intimate setting with dark vibes and so chic. If you order the right drink, the thunder and rain sound and there's a celebration. Whatever you do, make a reservation and check this place out. It's a special Tiki Bar in Little Italy and worth the price and visit. read more

Amazing tiki bar experience and ambience. We loved every minute, and almost came back here on the second night of our trip! I loved the macadamia nut tiki drink, and the one with the banana and coffee flavors (can't remember the names, and can't find their menu online to share). They also had thunder and lightning sound effects throughout the night when people ordered a specific shared drink, and the decor was very well done (it wasn't cheesy like other places). Secret speakeasy located inside Craft & Commerce on Kettner Blvd. in Little Italy. Get there early or call to make a reservation especially if you have a group or occasion you're celebrating. It's not huge inside and seating is very limited. You may have to suck it up and just stand, but if you're only in for a quick drink it's not so bad. Bar seating goes fast too! Crazy and colorful interior is a funky space, but very creative and unique! Service is on it, been here twice now and they are great checking in on you and making recommendations if you're undecided. Their menu is pretty extensive and they have a whole collection of fancy drinks to choose from. Great place for a GNO, guys night, or a casual gathering. Prices are above average but it's what you pay for the ambiance and well worth it imo! I do remember they said you're not allowed to bring in food, but we kinda smuck in a small cake for a friend's birthday and our server was cool about it. If you want food, there's always Craft & Commerce but I can't remember if they said you could order from there and have it brought to you in here. Parking can be crazy anywhere around here but it's downtown SD so that's to be expected. Definitely pop in here if you haven't been, you'll get a kick out of that fancy drink that lights up everytime someone orders it! It'll happen at least 2 or 3 times while you're there, trust! False Idol is a nice and busy speakeasy in the midst of Little Italy. Reservations are recommended but not required... meaning you should probably make reservations. We went on the waitlist and got seated a little earlier cause we kept checking back in person but still, make a reservation. So for starters, you need to go into Craft and Commerce to actually find the entrance for False Idol. Ask around if you're absolutely lost but the uhh skull hallway and random vine decorations to the left of the bar should be a clue where the entrance is. Once you can go in though, you enter through a very Indiana Jones-esque hall complete with the skulls of the victims of would-be adventurers trying to find the False Idol. Once you get past that, you're inside a tiki bar designed as a cavern where you can get a unique assortment of drinks. The space is actually not too large but the vibes are pleasant and fun! All in all, fun experience if you can snag a reservation and not wait an hour to enter. read more

I'll start by saying I've been eyeing this place for a while and when I saw a random OpenTable reservation available for a Wednesday at 7 (3 weeks away from when I found it) I snagged the spot and swore I'd go even if it was by myself! The tiki bar is located inside Craft and Commerce. It's a little unassuming because it's a speakeasy, but when you walk in you definitely get Indiana Jones/Tiki Room Disneyland vibes. It's a lot of fun, good music, and a huge menu to choose from. I got the matcha-lo-ha and also got a souvenir cup to bring home. There was a 90 minute table limit, but seating was comfortable. Parking is always blah in Little Italy so just prepare yourself for a garage $$ or to drive around aimlessly for a spot - so maybe take an Uber! It sounded like a rainforest inside and the decor was a lot of fun. Can't wait to go back for another experience!! read more
I couldn't get a reservation here, but my friend and I decided to wait for the walk in anyway. The entrance was through Craft & Commerce on the left side of the bar. There was already a line for the walk in when we arrived, but it moved rather quickly. I think next time I would make a reservation because inside there's really not much standing room. There are two barrels on both sides of the bar that you can stand by and place your drinks on so you don't have to be holding your drink the entire time. We got lucky and there was an open one. The atmosphere of this place was a 10/10 easy, a little spooky with the skulls in their walls. They do have a nice little waterfall on the side as well. It reminded me at scene in Finding Nemo and he's stuck inside the fish tank and they make him walk through the gushing water chanting WooHaHa. Anyway, that's what it felt like. The place was decked out in garlands and Christmas lights when we went and it was amazing! I love Christmas lights so I enjoyed all of it! I tried their Mac Nut Chi Chi! And it was so yummy hazel nutty and creamy. I also got Banana Nog off their Holiday menu and it was so good as well! I wanted to choose the same creamy base and it reminded me of a spiked banana pudding! My friend got Santa's Sidepiece off of the holiday menu and it was tarty, fruity, and slightly sweet! They had cute Santa hats on their drinks as well! Which I thought was a nice holiday touch! Would definitely 10000% want to come back! read more

Located in the back of Craft & Commerce, False Idol is a popular tiki bar with some of the best cocktails I've ever had. My friend and I were hanging out, and this was our 3rd spontaneous stop. I was pretty full from dinner (and drunk) by then, so I'd love to start another night here next time. We put our names down and waited for an hour. Reservations would have been preferred. I got the El Presidente, while my friend ordered the Ack Nut Chi Chi. GET THE ACK NUT CHI CHI. Soooo good. I liked the El Presidente but should have tried something fruitier to match my mood. Service was fantastic. We ended up standing the whole time at a barrel because of capacity. Overall lovely speakeasy experience. Swanky, dark, and lively. Come check it out!! read more

These drinks are S T R O N G! Well worth the price. Reservation recommended, it gets very busy. You get your table for 1.5 hours. The staff is nice and orders come out quickly. Drinks are expensive but delicious. The bar is very small and it's extremely dark inside. Wheelchair access seems limited/crowded. Restrooms are outside in the main hall. read more

Solid tiki bar option. Located inside craft and commerce, it's a fun albeit small place. They have a small bar area with seating surrounding it. We came on a Monday right at open with a group of 5 and we were able to get seated right away but we were told we had to leave within an hour for a group with reservations which was fine with us. They have happy hour from 5-6 where their cocktails are $7 which we took advantage of. I got a drink with rum and macadamia in it that tasted pretty good but it felt like there was almost no alcohol in it. It was creamier than I was expecting, maybe from the macadamia. My partner got the Ube bae off the standard menu which seems to be really popular. It definitely had Ube flavor and packed a punch! Not sure I'd rush back but it was a fun vibe and the drinks were pretty good. The rest of the menu looks interesting too so everyone will be able to find something to enjoy. read more
Excellent customer service and drinks, definitely a great spot to check out! This was my first time at a speakeasy and let me tell you, this place has set the bar REALLY high. My friend and I arrived around 530 pm on a Friday, without reservations and were able to get in by being okay standing instead of having a seat at a table or bar. Happy hour is such a good deal, $7 for the most delicious cocktails! I loved my drink, my server and I called it the huna huna because of it's super long name. We got lucky and one of the tables opened up so were able to move there for about 30 minutes and enjoy our drinks before the next reservation arrived. This place was such an incredible experience in terms of the ambience and vibe, service, drinks, all of it! read more

I think this may be my favorite San Diego tiki bar! Xmas is my favorite time of year to come here (but the rest of the year is pretty great also) This year was a must see since it was nightmare before Xmas themed (MY FAVORITE!!!) We each had 2 different drinks and they were all amazing! Nutter butter not was our favorite. Get a reservation if you want to snag a seat. Otherwise you still have a chance getting on a waitlist. Coolest speakeasy in little Italy, parking absolutely sucks so I'd recommend to either get dropped off by a friend or Uber. This speakeasy is located inside craft and commerce, reservation is required. They stamp you prior your entry.. We were able to get a table inside which was great since it's such a small area, but the bar and the inside was very well decorated. Service was awesome, our server definitely had great recommendations. Example we had the Luau Scorpion drink to share as a group. Which was not too strong yet not too sweet. A good balance but I mean, hey don't chug it by yourself, you'd 100% feel it if you do. We all liked it. Tried the Mai Tai and the Ube drink- they were really good. And it looked sooo cute. Bathroom is located by the exit so you'd have to go through the main entrance of craft and commerce to return. Music was fun, I fell in love with the decor. I would def recommend this spot! read more
This was our first tiki stop in San Diego. False Idol did not disappoint. So glad we made a reservation and got there early. Bartender and waiter were amazing. Drinks were so good. It was only a few blocks from our hotel in Little Italy. Great location. I went back the next night by myself and got in on the waitlist, standing room only. Would definitely recommend if you are in San Diego. No food, but plenty of places to eat nearby. read more

Hands down, one of our favorite Tiki Bar's in San Diego! We have been lucky enough to go right when they opened and walked right in without a wait. The ambiance is interactive, the bartenders are fantastic and friendly. When you order certain drinks, they will have sounds and lighting effects which is fun! They do not serve food, so eat beforehand or afterwards. I haven't had a single drink here I didn't like, and the prices are reasonable for what you get! Highly recommend this place and will definitely be back! read more
Came here right at opening at 5pm on a Wednesday and we were first in line - definitely the right move without a reservation to guarantee a seat as quickly as possible! The space is located within Craft & Commerce just as a heads up for those of you trying to find the hard-to-see location. The ambiance was super intimate and a really nice vibe. The bartenders were honestly just really cool people, they gave off that vibe and looked like they were just chilling as they made their drinks. They were super friendly and were really eager to serve us which was pretty cool, it was definitely a lot of fun just sitting at the bar and watching them make drinks. Happy Hour was a great deal we couldn't not take advantage of, but we also made sure to get something off their regular menu as everything looked fantastic. The Tío Borracho is something I'd recommend for anyone who loves tequila drinks - definitely really well made as the flavors were fantastic and everything went down smoothly. Broken Supply Chain was also super tasty for folks who like a more tropical drink, it was definitely something they made well and the rum was very easy to drink. The Ube Bae was the highlight of the night - I've honestly never had a drink like it. The ube was flawlessly blended into the drink and it was deliciously creamy and sweet. I loved every sip and I regret being a bit of a lightweight - I would've loved to have more! Overall, False Idol checks every box for a speakeasy. Great vibes, amazing drinks, awesome people. I can't wait to come back when I'm in the area again! read more

Great drinks! Great atmosphere! We were coming to San Diego for a concert and I was trying to get reservations for this place as it tends to get crowded but I couldn't get reservations so on a whim we went by at about 10 o'clock and there was no one waiting luckily. I am a tiki drink snob, and these drinks are awesome. The bartenders are friendly and they know what they're doing. read more

My review im leaving is for a situation I was in a few weeks ago, sadly I wasn't able to feel this vibe. I was throwing a surprise party for a friend and it was a party of 10 no number to contact, if you go on the website it tells you to reach out for large party group. I ended up sending a message thru Facebook and it was a very late response, we ended up switching plans last minute. We came here with a couple friends from out of town and we had a great time. We ordered the big bowl cocktail to share, it was a cool presentation with fire and sounds of a rolling storm. However it was some what weird that we all got long straws and stick them in the same bowl and slurp up (I wasn't a fan of that, wish I would have know). Overall we all had a good time and ordered different drinks. It was very dark in there, but I guess that adds to the experience. I would still recommend it. read more

We recently visited for an informal meetup with our professional organization. The hostess was so kind and accommodating, we were all from out of town and had many questions. She and the server were very kind and patient and made sure we had a great time - recommending drinks and making suggestions. The ambiance is so unique. The tiki bar and speakeasy atmosphere is so fun. The wood carvings are super cool and we enjoyed the music and thunder storm sounds. It's fun for everyone and many in our group commented you could sit in a place like this all night and be content. Drinks were unique and tasted great. Also not as expensive as many other bars in the area. Beautiful presentation of drinks. Overall a must try in San Diego. I'll definitely be back if I'm in town again! read more

A friend of mine has been recommending this place for a while. I went on a Wednesday night and the waiting time was roughly 20 mins - I guess we were lucky :) It is so cool inside! I loved the tiki decorations and they have plenty of cocktails to choose from. The host was really accommodating and the prices weren't bad. You should give it a try! read more
My husband took me on a date night to the speakeasy, False Idol which is accessible inside of Craft and Commerce. This is a Polynesian tiki themed small bar that features great themed music, decorations and special effects. They have an extensive specialty drink menu. The drinks are really tasty and strong. Our server was Ellie and she was awesome. We were seated at a table for two beside the bar. We had made reservations for False Idol a couple of weeks before as it can be difficult to get a reservation. There is a drink on the menu called The scorpion which is large and meant to be shared. It is served flaming and when this is being brought to the table, special effects are triggered throughout the bar. We didn't order this drink but we enjoyed seeing it served to other tables around us. We ordered 3 drinks each....two would have been enough but they were all soooo good. We ordered: - Ode to Okolehao -Port Au Prince -Polynesian Forty Niner -Tradewinds -False Idol Old Fashioned -Alkala's Rum Barrel I highly recommend this tiki experience. Each reservation is good for 90 minutes, I could have just spent much more time in this space just chilling out...but all good things must come to an end. This was a wonderful place for a date with my husband and it's a great place to experience with friends. read more

Coming from Wisconsin (where we are used to some pretty lax rules) next month and wondering if we come around opening time on a Wednesday evening, are school - age children allowed inside?
I would say no, because it's a bar. But you could call and ask just in case.
Are there tiki mugs available for purchase?
Yes! Currently we have 4 different mugs for purchase only at the bar.

Yes! We do book up quite fast. We always run a waitlist, nightly. The waitlist can be for standing room, the bar or a table if we have any cancellations.
Can't get a reservation! What's the chance of getting a walk in? Late on a Friday night for 2.
They'll let you in on a space available basis. It's tight in there, and weekends are usually packed. You may have to just stand the entire time you're in there. If you're only planning to have a drink or two, it won't be too bad.

Anywhere from 30-60 minutes, and you'll very likely be standing. If you want to sit, you need a reservation.

Yes they do take walkins. For small parties of one or two. Only if they do have room. The earlier in the night the better. I think they open at five or six.
