I love speakeasies and this was one of the best. The hostess and bartender are super awesome! Amy is hilarious! I love how they laid or the menu. They have their signature drink on top of each page and then on the bottom are similar, more common drinks. Drinks are really good. They also have small bites. Overall a great and intimate experience and will def be coming back!

Been a few times but it's been a while and Henry, Amy, and Ben made us feel right at home again. This is one of our fave speakeasies because it really gives a speakeasy vibe-won't give away too much in case you've not been. But also easily bookable through OpenTable (we booked a 7pm slot about 30 minutes before). Two drink minimum with classics at $20 and specialties at $22. A few light bites but def better to just have drinks here and eat nearby. Also love the conversation cards they put on the table as an activity. All in all a solid spot and a fun spot for date night or a girls/boys night out.

Room 56 is located within the Moxy in downtown SD on the second floor. You pick up the red book and the hostess will be with you shortly. Once she opens the door you take a tight staircase down to the parlor room 56. Very intimate and holds true to a speakeasy feel. We were given complimentary champagne upon seating and a deck of cards that had questions on them. It really made great conversation while enjoying your drinks! The drinks were a hit or miss for myself. I think because the bartenders base the menu on their take of drinks aka also opposite of what the standard might be for that cocktail. However, I did enjoy the creativity and effort put into the cocktails. It made a great date night. Heads up reservations are required for the most part.

Love the conversation cards they brought to the table!

Such a hidden gem! This was a perfect spot for a quiet date night in San Diego. Service here was top-notch, and they had a great variety of drinks on the menu depending on which spirit you prefer. They also have some small bites to eat as well. I loved how they provided conversation cards during your visit!!! Cocktails were also super high quality. Don't forget to make a reservation!!!!

Room 56 at the Moxy is a 3 star speakeasy experience for me it's not terrible by any means but definitely not the vibe I was hoping for. I love a good speakeasy and the feeling of being transported somewhere else but this one felt more like a very small high end hotel lounge than a true speakeasy. It's stylish but it never really gave that "wow" or immersive speakeasy moment. On the positive side the cocktails were good they clearly have the mixology part down and the drinks were well balanced and thoughtfully made. The downside was the service which was surprisingly subpar for such a small space. Every time we ordered a round, it took about 25-30 minutes to get our drinks which really drags out the experience in not a great way. Also worth noting prices here are on the high end so be prepared to spend if you come through. Overall, cool to check out once if you're already at Moxy but as far as speakeasies go it felt a bit lackluster and not somewhere I'd rush back to.

Host Henry was super nice and helpful. Really enjoyed the drinks here. The drink menu was extensive and we went during their valentine special so the valentine menu that was offered was pretty good. Would def go back for the ambiance and great drinks

Great cocktails. Extremely friendly service. Place was busy on a Tuesday due to a convention in town. Bar concept was good but I'd recommend some more thoughtful touches like nice garnish jars or rimming trays etc. Back bar seemed a little clustered. Possibly a better solution for syrups as opposed to be scattered around back bar. It takes away from the vibe and look. Would still Highly recommend for a good cocktail and cute date night

The experience and ambiance was amazing. The staff was incredible and friendly. I had the Kamboora which was pleasantly different. Just very expensive.

The cocktails were phenomenal! The staff was so friendly and the atmosphere was amazing. Will definitely be back.

We got lucky enough on a Friday night to get a table here without a reservation. But I would definitely recommend you make one! Once you get called in, you go through a secret door and once inside, you walk down a set of spiral stairs where you'll then find the hidden speakeasy bar. It's dim, cozy, and intimate. Not sure if they do this all the time, but at our table were some still water and a tiny glass of champagne. They also gave us a set of question cards for a conversation starter, which was rather cool! We enjoyed this place a lot! Drinks were uniquely served in such eclectic style and they were pretty good.

So fancy and intimate! We did not have a reservation but they were able to accommodate our large group. Thanks!! Recommend 100%

Gaslamp has a speakeasy inside the Moxy Hotel called "Room 56", named after the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence. The speakeasy is accessed through a hidden door in a bookcase (after you picked up a red book and led down a spiral staircase by a "Librarian" to a cocktail den). From the complimentary Prosecco shot to a deck of question cards, the speakeasy was inviting and had interesting mixed drinks like ones with red curry or lamb fat! The servers were attentive and welcoming. It was definitely a fun evening!

    even the bill is classy!

Absolutely one of the best bars I've ever been to. The "classics" are perfectly-executed and the Room 56 originals are just incredible. Can't wait to go back!

Can you hold private events here, like rent out the space ? I can't find any contact information on the site and doesn't even give options to navigate on the site.

When does the January calendar open?

How do I make reservations? I keep visiting the website, and receive a "Site Currently Unavailable" error…

You can make a reservation by visiting our page listed as "VIIIV" at Resy.com.

Is there a wheelchair accessible entrance?

Good question I don't believe there is.

Are they still checking for vaccination cards?

We are no longer checking for vaccination cards. Thank you for your interest and question.

    Where do you park?

We do not have designated parking, but there is street parking and local lots.

Is this place really now requiring a $40 per person minimum and a 90 minute time limit? That's a lot of drinks in a short period of time.

Each drink costs $20. Plus there is a 22% gratuity automatically applied. It was way too expensive. We went on Saturday.

    Are there non-alcoholic drink options?

    Yes

I am not able to find the number on the website. Any help?

VIIIV.co will lead you to the librarian - hint scroll all the way down the site and the null is the entrance. Thankee

I've been texting them the code for days now (once saying they'll return on Tuesday) and I finally got a response saying "who's this?" But that was the end of that and no more responses from there. Any tips?

Did you respond telling them who you were? They like to mess with you bit when you text them.

I'm trying to make a reservation and I'm calling the number on the website, it says the number is no longer in use. Is there another way to get in contact? Also what is the dress code here?

Try texting the number. It should work. Go back to the website to make sure the code word and number are correct. Dress code comes with the reply text along with your reservation.

What kind of food is actually served here? Don't see any pictures or menu, is there a menu?

    No food.

Can you make a reservation for days in advance or only same day?

Hello and we accept reservations in advance - looking forward to seeing you.

How does one make a reservation?

Call the number found on their website :)

Phone number is disconnected. How do you get reservations?

Who uses a phone to call somebody? That's crazy talk. Let your fingers do the taking.

Does this place have wheelchair access?

Hello! I've been texting the "code name" to the phone in their website but I am not getting a…

Yes, that should work. We received a reply pretty quick so something has to be off...double check the number and that the code name didn't change

How do I make a reservation?

If you’re staying in the hotel, check at the front desk. Otherwise, go to their website and scroll to the bottom (from your mobile device).

How do you make a reservation?

Get the black and gold card from the bar or front desk, follow the cryptic directions and that will get you to someone who can book you!

    Is there a dress code?

Located in Old Town San Diego, we had dinner at a restaurant within walking distance from Oculto. I parked for free on the street and made a reservation day of. It's a pretty small speakeasy so if you're going on a weekend, you're probably going to have to make a reservation in advance. Ambiance (4.5/5): Oculto has the seven deadly sins theme going which is pretty cool. I've been to a similar speakeasy in St. Pete, Florida. Once you arrive at the mezcal bar that houses Oculto, check in with the host, and he will bring you to a "confessional." There, you must confess one of the seven deadly sins before the door to the speakeasy is opened for you. Naturally, I went with "lust." Once you get inside, it's a charming speakeasy. Service (2.5/5): This is one of the areas that leaves a little to be desired. There was only one bartender working when I was there. Since speakeasies have elevated cocktails, service was quite slow. They definitely needed two bartenders there to speed up the process. They also have a two-drink minimum which I was annoyed about on principle. I often have multiple drinks at a bar, but I never feel like I'm forced to do it. Food (N/A): I'm not sure if they have food, I don't believe they do. Regardless, I was on a liquid diet. Drinks (4/5): Pretty interesting menu of craft cocktails. When I'm at a speakeasy, I look for unique drinks that have an interesting combination of ingredients and flavor profiles. In addition to a nice list, they also have a dealer's choice cocktail where you can tell the bartender what you're into and they will craft a custom cocktail for you based on your taste. Another cool thing about Oculto is that it's located next to the cemetery in Old Town. That adds to the spooky theme.

Previously you got three custom drinks based on your preference starting with a starter, main, and dessert style. Now, they kept the starter, main and dessert, however the "bartender's choice" is only for the main. Both the starter and dessert are options. The starter is purely based on preference and intentionally they leave out the alcohol included so that doesn't sway your decision. Their bartenders explained that this change was to meet people in the middle of experiences they might get elsewhere at speakeasy's while keeping their originality. Honestly, both experiences were great so I can't complain. For my starter, I went with the Lush + Tropical Fruit + Citric. I was stuck between that and two others, but from talking with the bartender they help break down the drink experience further. It was super helpful. We heard that some people, forgo the main drink of bartendar's choice and instead just do two starters... that is an option, but I LOVE and highly recommend going with the flow and letting the bartenders make you a drink based on your preferences. They're great at their jobs. For my husband's starter, he went with the beeswax + barley + orchard. If you like honey, you will love it. The other he was choosing between was the herbaceous + bright + oceanic, and that one looked fun. Someone else got it, and it was Icey-like (in looks). Would want to try it. For my second drink, I explained my preferred drinks are margaritas, mezcalitas, or punch style fruity/floral, smooth, and spicy drinks. I got a drink that was mezcalita based with passionfruit and spicy pepper basically. It was yum and definitely like drinks I would normally have. My third drink I went with the strawberry fields.... Highly recommend. It was in an underrated, simple glass, but has a fantastic flavor. My husband got the lemon meringue pie (as did so many people in the bar), and I was slightly worried I would have liked his more. But the strawberry fields ended up being our favorite drink of the drink between everything we had. It was just great.

Given the name, I was expecting this to be a vampire hangout or for some animal sacrifices of sorts to take place, but I'm happy to report that Young Blood is none of that. It's a top-notch speakeasy in line with some of the best I've been to. Ambiance (4.5/5): Young Blood is a relatively small speakeasy with some great vibes. To get there, walk inside Neighborhood and find your way. There are actually two speakeasies inside the same restaurant, with the other being The Noble Experiment. Young Blood seats 20-30 people or so. We made a reservation to be safe. If it's a weekend, it's probably a must. On a week day, who knows. It depends on how much you'd like to roll the dice. One of the coolest parts of the ambiance is that they have these huge six foot candles or so. One was right by us at the bar. My only complaint about the bar area? Back-less bar stools. I need some support for my old man back! Service (4/5): Overall, the service was quite good. There were two bartenders working that both served us. They were both attentive and pretty efficient at their jobs. They also hook you up with a little amuse bouche which is always much appreciated. Food (N/A): I was on a liquid diet on this visit. I don't think they have food anyway though I'm not 100%. Drinks (4.5/5): Think of this as a tasting menu for drinks. It's three courses. Meaning you're required to get three drinks. Normally, stuff like this annoys me, but the drinks are so well made here that I was cool with it. While Young Blood isn't cheap, given the sophistication of the cocktails, it's worth it. For your first course, you have your choice of eight or so cocktails. What's interesting is that they leave out the main spirit in the description purposefully. So as to not sway you to go for your poison of choice and instead focus on the flavor profile. It's rolling the dice a little bit but it worked out. My first course was gin-based which was right up my alley. The second course is dealer's choice. You tell the bartender about what liquors you like, flavor profiles, what to stay away from, etc. and they will craft a cocktail to your taste. Well done yet again. And finally, the third course is a "desert course" and you have your choice of four or so options. I went with the lemon meringue cocktail which tasted as good as it sounds. They even toast the meringue with a blow torch. Impressive. I've been to a lot of speakeasies in my day nationwide. Young Blood is in the top 10. Hands down.

Multiple bystanders witnessed his behavior but failed to intervene, assuming it was just "relationship drama" After the man finally left, the venue's security completely misread the situation. Instead of checking on my well-being or ensuring the aggressor had left the premises, security targeted and chased me as if I were the problem. It is incredibly disappointing and dangerous for a business's security team to lack the basic situational awareness and training required to identify the actual victim in a situation. I felt entirely unprotected by the staff here. I hope management takes this as a serious sign that their security team needs immediate retraining on bystander intervention and de-escalation, rather than harassing women who are already in vulnerable situations.
