When I'm in the neighborhood I always stop by Family Baking, specifically for their perfect egg tarts, but there's always some other treat that catches my eye and I get and I've never been disappointed. I particularly like the wife pastry and the vegan pandan bun. That's another plus for them, they always have a selection of vegan baked goods as well. I have been to this bakery 3 times in a week. This is now my number 1 Chinese style bakery in town. It is clean, has a wide selection of super delicious buns, the owners are friendly and the price is so reasonable. My favorite is the Malaysia Siew Bao. It is a pastry with bbq pork inside but not your regular bbq pork bun. Everyone who took my recommendation (Malaysian or not) and bought this from Family Baking loved it. I even introduced it to some friends from Mainland China and will bring 2 to my American coworkers tomorrow for them to try. It is not easy to find Siew Bao outside of Malaysia. I can't believe how lucky we are to have a bakery in Atlanta that sells it. I still need to try more of their cakes to make a recommendation on their cake flavor but I am already eyeing the Taro cake. Why is my birthday not until December? Also worth mentioning is this bakery has many vegan selections and when I tried one, I couldn't really tell the difference. This is hard to come by in an Asian bakery so it is another plus in my opinion. Note that they also have pretty good drinks selection but everything is to go only as this is a small bakery with no seating. Highly recommended and it is worth a drive from wherever you are located in Atlanta. read more

im a sucker for locally owned businesses. this place has the best buns ive had in the atl area by far. i came in not expecting much but i was sooooo wrong. i grabbed bbq chicken bun, a pineapple pastry, an egg tart, a vegan hk polo and other types of buns. i honestly inhaled most of the box before i got to school and im sad that i didnt buy more. but. the sleeper bun was the vegan hk polo. i wish i bought more of those. it was in my hand and thenit was gone. it disappeared into the abyss of my stomach. please try the vegan hk polo bun even if you are skeptical of the concept. idk what kind of witchcraft they did. they are crack. i need to go back to have another fix. until then my stomach will yearn for more. read more

I heard about a new family owned bakery in Chinatown and I had to check it out. I like a sweet dessert to top off the evening. The bakery is opened to 8:30 pm, so that is a great to grab a sweet or savory item. The place is small, clean and very organized. There is a wide assortment of pastries, breads, and savory buns. It is self serve. I picked the LAST cream bun that was at least 6 inches long and top with an amazing light cream filling. The pastry was light and did not give me a heavy feeling in my stomach. It was so good with an hot cup of tea. I also selected a coconut tart. The tart was amazing and the texture and taste of the coconut was perfect. Not too sweet. These desserts lasted 10 minutes in my hands. The service is great and they are very friendly, like a family. They has some savory buns, that would be great for lunch to go, ham and cheese, hot dogs..... This is a very good place to grab a quick lunch, dinner bun, drink and go. There is sitting outside ( two tables). The prices are very good. This is my new weekend lunch hangout. The food is good, the prices are good and the service is warm and friendly. I recently ordered a taro birthday cake from Family Baking and it was amazing!!! It was not overly sweet, and the taro flavor is great because the filling is real taro. The pudding layer in the cake was also very yummy! The cake was also beautifully decorated, it was ombre on the sides with fruit on top. I wish I got a picture, but we cut into so fast I didn't get a chance! haha. My friend has also ordered a durian birthday cake from them before, and although I personally don't care for the taste of durian, I was in awe about how beautifully decorated the cake was (it looked exactly like a real durian fruit!). The people that ate the durian cake said that it was perfect, not too sweet and just enough durian flavor. The owners are also very friendly. Run, don't walk, to Family Baking!!! I call myself somewhat of a Dan Ta (Portuguese egg tart) connoisseur, having eaten hundreds all over Atlanta and the DC area since I was a kid. The pastry is incredibly flaky and the custard is perfect and not too sweet. We were lucky to get a batch straight out of the oven and they were perfect. We ate half warm and half the next day. They were just as good. Before calling them the best I've ever had, I ran out to Sweet Hut and Hong Kong Bakery (which I've been going to since I was a baby) for their Dan Ta.
