Family Baking is a relatively new addition to the Atlanta Chinatown mall in Chamblee. This is a small, humble, low-key, and no-frills Chinese mom-and-pop bakery that opened in March 2019. It occupies one of the mall's street-facing storefronts, so you don't have to look hard to find it. The business has received stellar ratings on Yelp. Based on my experience, I wouldn't go as far as rating this place five stars, but we did enjoy the pastries we got from here. Service was nice and speedy too. This place serves Chinese/Asian pastries and tea beverages including milk tea and milk foam drinks with toppings (just like all the popular bubble tea shops). Like other Asian bakeries and cafes, items are prepared fresh daily for grab-and-go purchase. Unlike other Asian bakeries and cafes, Family Baking doesn't have much to speak of in terms of ambiance and decor. It's all about the product here, at least for now. Also, this business is smaller than the competition in terms of size, staff, and selection. During our visit, the store was set up with a pastry warmer/heater display case, tables and shelves stocked with individually bagged breads and pastries, and refrigerators partially filled with cakes, other sweet desserts, and canned and bottled beverages. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, there was no dedicated seating, inside or outside, nor a restroom for customer use. If you want to eat or drink on-site, you can go to the mall's outdoor garden or take your food and bev to the indoor food court (it's open). There are restrooms at the food court too. One of tables was almost exclusively all vegan products. We picked up a few Egg Tarts, a Red Bean Mochi Bun, a Taro Bun, a couple Red Bean Paste Breads, and mooncakes in three flavors: Red Bean Snowy, Chocolate Snowy, and Lotus Snowy. I was a big fan of the Egg Tarts, Red Bean Mochi Bun, and Taro Bun. The Egg Tarts were terrific. I think they're some of the best you're going to find in Atlanta in terms of both taste and texture. The Red Bean Mochi Bun, topped with sesame seeds, was airy, fluffy, and filled with delectable red bean paste paired with fresh, soft, and chewy mochi. The Taro Bun was yummy with a nice balance of springy, appetizing bread and a tasty layer of taro in the middle. The Red Bean Paste Bread was good, but not what I was expecting. Instead of having a substantial red bean paste filling inside, it was a thin layer of red bean paste that was rolled into the bread and baked. I was probably wrongly expecting more of a Red Bean Paste Bun. My wife and mom liked it better than me. With the Mid-Autumn Festival tomorrow, Family Baking had seven flavors of individually-packaged mooncakes in front of the register. These mooncakes tasted homemade and, while OK, I was a little underwhelmed by them. I've had processed and mass-produced mooncakes that tasted better. I thought the crusts on these were a little too hard and the fillings a bit too dense. I'd be willing to give them another chance. I'd like to come back and try some of the roll cakes, milk tea, and, based on comments from others, the Malaysia BBQ Pastries and fresh Pineapple Biscuits from the pastry warmer. I hear the latter two are especially delicious. Note: Family Baking and Rolls Village, next door, are both owned by Jane Chung. At the time of writing this review, the two stores are consolidated into a single space and effectively operate as the same business. We entered the Rolls Village space and Rolls Village was printed at the top of our receipt. I asked Jane and her husband Michael about this and they explained to me what I wrote above. Lovely little shop with the most amazing breads i've ever had. I strongly suggest the bolo bun, hotdog bun, and Japanese milk bread. There are many options I haven't tried and there's a plethora of vegan options as well. The owners are super sweet and helpful. Family Baking is a homey and unassuming bakeshop tucked into the Chinatown Mall shopping center. The man at the register (the owner?) was ultra nice and eager to answer questions about his goods. There was even a vegan section by the door, for those avoiding animal products.  I picked up a pandan coconut bun ($1.70), a red bean mochi ($1.70), pineapple pastry ($1.50), and white milk toast ($3.75/loaf) to give to some folks, and they were warmly received. A customer told me the half-cake, half-bread toast was delicious, so that's something to consider. Family's not particularly a sit down spot, but there was a table inside and two or so outside. We seated ourselves at the inside one to enjoy some pineapple pastries [cakes] and were even offered and served complimentary ice water by the gentleman working.   The pineapple pastries weren't bad. The filling was a little sweeter and less pineapple-y than I'm used to, however the pastry part outside enveloping the pineapple paste middle was exceptional. These guys were kept in a warm case, along with a few other select treats. I also tried a scallion bun later at home and liked it. There was a subtle sweetness to the bread, and the scallions were in a sort of a gentle creamy-like base on top. I admired the pretty cakes on display; the mango one was stunning! read more

I came across Family Baking through a Taiwanese friend who praises the place and says it's authentic and delicious. Therefore, I had to stop by to check it out. Family Baking is located at Chinatown. It's not at the food court. I thought it would be at the same place as the former Dhino Bakery. I asked around where it was and no one knew. I literally had to walk around to find Suite E. I found it on the right hand side in the way front. It's a small store but they have what you need from baked goodies to drinks. There is a vegan section too! It was great to see cause honestly, Asians shouldn't have that much dairy in their diet hehe. I also ordered the kumquat passion fruit tea, vegan bread, along with other goodies to take home. We came in to place an order for birthday cakes, and the turnaround time was 48 hours. When we came back, we also picked up some warm pastries. The savory pastries we got had more filling, a better tasting crust, and were cheaper than a larger chain down the road in Buford highway where we'd recently tasted the same pastries. The cakes themselves (chocolate mousse and taro) were beautifully decorated. I would say that I typically prefer a richer frosting and overall more decadent cake, and these were extremely light both in terms of the whipped cream-like frostings and the cake layers themselves. I would not fault the cakes for that though, as that's simply my personal preference. If you like a light and airy cake, this is the place to visit! I recently went to Family Baking's soft opening and everyone inside was so friendly and helpful. Absolutely loved the mom and pop store feel, who doesn't love being greeted with a smile? We ended up getting the macha red bean bun, corn cheese bun, bbq chicken bun, the coconut pandan pastry and a milk tea to wash everything down. Everything was perfectly seasoned and delicious. So happy to have found luscious, light, golden egg custard in buttery flaky crisp tart shell and the loveliest Hong Kong / Malaysian shopkeepers, at the adorable Chinatown complex (enjoy your daan tat in the mini garden!). And they have green osthmanthus tea with milk foam and you can add toppings like passionfruit jelly. With all that's going on, it was great to get a taste of my former home and to connect with these fellow Cantonese speakers who put their heart into every bite / sip. I am so far behind with pictures, but I can see that there's plenty posted here already. Nothing new to add, except just a hearty endorsement! They are different from Sweet Hut, in that the buns are more homey, there's VEGAN options, and their prices are pretty decent. It's more of a hole in the wall kind of feeling! But they're very clean, tidy, and just this CUTE little place owned by a family. They are part of this Chinese strip mall with a food court inside, so it's convenient to go there for lunch or dinner and stop by to get buns before or after. They have bubble tea too! read more

Really glad to see a new Chinese bakery pop up in the Chinatown plaza. Although I am only interested in standard Chinese baked goods, I think they might be on the only place that has vegan baked goods. I tried the roast chicken Bun, the coconut bun, and the bacon and seaweed bun. All of them were really good...especially the bread itself. I wish they had roast pork buns as I buy 10-20 per month from the other bakery and freeze them to eat at home. I'm trying to convince them to add that to the menu. This is a family run business with the wife baking the goods and the husband running the front of house. Very friendly and welcoming. Love this place!! The couple is always so sweet, and the pastries are yummy. I love that they have vegan options. One of my favorite things to get is the Brown Sugar Pearl Latte. In my opinion, it's better than a lot of other boba places. The "Pearl" is more of a jelly like consistency rather than tapioca, but it's unique in that way. I found this wonderful bakery a week before my daughter's birthday party. I had a theme but not a clear idea of what I wanted on the caked and they worked with me to come up with a design. The cake turned out not only beautiful but also delicious. I got the vanilla cake with fresh strawberry filling. I ordered the durian cake for mother's day. Over the phone, I asked how much it was. $61??? Holy I had to bite my tongue and say OK. BEST decision I made. When I went to pick up the cake, the guy at the counter was incredibly excited about the cake and explained in full detail how it was made with REAL durian meat. "1 durian cake uses 1 whole box of real durian." He reiterated to me to put it in the fridge as soon as I get home. He told me that if I like durian, I will love the durian cake. And I sure did! It was so delicious, even my mom who isn't crazy about cake and always tells me NOT to buy her cake (classic Asian mom who doesn't want her children to spend on her), loved the cake and told me that it was worth it. She also told all of her friends about it the next day and made me give her details about the bakery and cost and everything. It had strong durian flavor without being overly pungent. It was moist and fluffy, and also not too sweet (iykyk). There were small chunks of durian dispersed throughout the cake. It even looks like a real durian! The artwork was very realistic and you can tell that they really care about their cakes - both the flavor and the décor. 10/10 would recommend and this is coming from someone who isn't that crazy about cakes. Family Baking is one of those places that you end up coming back to again and again. I drive in from Lawrenceville and pass a number of quality bakeries along the way, but this is the first place I've found that I can walk in and explain that while I'll eat anything, my family has a vegan and a tree nut allergy, and the baker fully understands and can help steer me in the right direction with what to buy. There are several grab-and-go items, both sweet and savory, for those who want to pick something out and take home. This may sound indulgent, but we've found it's best to also get something to eat in the car on the way back to the house. The bakery just smells good, everything looks artisanal, and I just want to dig into something as soon as I pull away. One time I ordered a cake for a family gathering, and I specified that it had to be vegan. We knew the place made vegan desserts because we had been referred by a vegan restaurant that also sells Family Baking's desserts. I should add that while other bakeries will claim on Yelp to offer vegan dishes, they either don't have any when you get there, or they have one vegan option that tastes like sand. Family Baking has top-quality custom-made baked goods, and I can honestly say their vegan stuff tastes as delicious as the other stuff. Truthfully, you could serve one of their vegan desserts (they do cakes, mousses and parfaits) and no one would know they were vegan unless you said something. Their vegan desserts aren't bland or oily the way others' can be. The owner is very knowledgeable and happy to address customer questions and concerns. When I asked how they managed to make their whipped topping hold together so well, he explained how he combines soy milk and coconut in a temperature-controlled kitchen in order to get it to peak. Can't do soy? No problem. He also explained to me how he regularly makes custom vegan desserts without soy. In addition, the texture was lovely- when you bite into it, the bread has great chew to it and was not soggy, which i feel can be an issue with buns with filling. Family Baking has definitely become my favorite Asian bakery in Atlanta. I'd say it's one of my favorite bakeries in general in Atlanta- it's that good. The first time I went to Family Baking, it was to pick up morning pastries to take to my friend's house. I bought 6 pastries and they were a hit. It didn't take long for me to return a second time to get 6 pastries, this time for myself. The bakery opens at 8 except for on Tuesdays, but to get the most choices it's recommended that you show up closer to 9. On the weekends I've gone, trays of warm, fresh pastries are still coming out from the kitchen. There is a credit card minimum of $10, which can be usually met with 6 pastries. This place is a takeout place, not a hangout spot - but you should definitely buy some pastries from here to take to your favorite hangout spot. I also noticed that this bakery serves vegan versions of many of their pastries at equivalent prices. This is something I rarely notice at bakeries. Location/Parking: Family Baking is located in the Atlanta Chinatown Plaza. It's in the center of the plaza relative to Oriental Pearl and Dinho Supermarket. The plaza has a decent amount of parking, especially in the morning - the best time to get fresh pastries. Food: Assorted Pastries (prices range between $1.50-$1.70) - The pastries at Family Baking are cheaper than donuts from a lot of places around here. They're also absolutely delicious. I can classify the pastries roughly into sweet and savory, although there's a very slightness to the bread itself for all of them. In the savory category, there is a BBQ chicken bun which is similar to the more common roast pork bun. The buns have a decent amount of meat in the inside and are not overwhelming with respect to sauce, saltiness, or sweetness. Another variant of the savory bun is the pastry with melted cheese, ham, and mixed vegetables. Family Baking also sells this really cool egg salad bun. I was expecting egg custard, but there are actually chunks of hard-boiled egg inside this bun. For sweet buns, there is quite a variety - from the common Hong Kong pineapple bun with its flaky crust to less common but tasty taro and pandan pastries. You really can't go wrong with any of the pastries. They are excellent. Service: All of the employees I have met there are very friendly. The employees speak both Chinese and English. Verdict: Family Baking sells excellent, tasty Asian pastries in Atlanta's Chinatown. A welcome addition to Chinatown. It's a Hong Kong style bakery operated by a couple - the husband is from Hong Kong and the wife is from Malaysia. In addition to buns and breads, they also offer cakes and assortment of drinks. What impresses me is the variety of vegan options. About half the buns and cakes have their vegan counterparts. To my excitement, they sell one of my childhood favorite food - Malaysian Siu Bao - a baked pastry with char siu (roast pork) filling. It's typically sweet and savory with somewhat flaky exterior. It's even difficult to find it in Malaysia these day, and I found it here!! Unfortunately, they sold out of siu bao today, which means I'd be back - SOON! We bought a few things and only sampled the egg tart and vegan corn custard bun so far. Both were excellent. The egg tart has flaky shell and the filling is delicious. I'd put it on par with the ones from my favorite bakery (they are both good, but the shell is different). The bun is great too! Although the filling-to-bread ratio is a little low, it's still much higher than the buns from a popular bakery which I shall not name. Also, unlike the popular bakery I shall not name, the bread actually has great texture - soft, fine, slight chewiness. Although the bun is vegan, neither the taste nor texture was compromised. I enjoy it very much! Because they were not busy, we had a chance to chat with the husband. He's friendly and truly appreciate that we enjoy his food. Needless to say, I'd visit again and again and again...... *Update* We went back the bakery and tried few more items, including the Siu Bao that I was thinking for the past 48 hours. All the buns are good and the siu bao....oh yeah!!! It's slightly different from the ones I grew up loving, but still super delicious. Also, we tried their drinks (latte and matcha latte) and they are legit - which is somewhat of a surprise. They even have cold brew coffee and nitro coffee. Although I still think nitro coffee is nothing but gimmick, I'm surprise to see it at this non-pretentious, non-hipster establishment. New bakery in the ATL Chinatown. They have regular (I'm assuming that means milk and eggs) and then the vegan versions of those baked goods. Both savory and sweets offered, along with milk toast and fancy cakes you could order for events/bdays/etc. My one and only gripe is that they give you all your baked goods in a styrofoam container and then try to give it to you in a plastic bag. This lovely little bakery has apparently been open for two weeks, and it is definitely a unique addition to the ATL Chinese pastry scene! For one thing, I have been to many Chinese bakeries in my life, but have never seen one that offers vegan (as well as traditional nonvegan) pastries! We really enjoyed the red bean mochi bun ($1.60), which was very fresh and tasty! The bun was not too bready, had a generous sprinkling of sesame seeds on top (much better coverage than I generally see on red bean buns), ample red bean filling, and, the best part: velvety soft mochi filling. My girlfriend and I went here for the first time yesterday and it was SO good! We weren't even a 10 minute drive out before we finished our vegan vanilla buttercream pastry. The thing that stood out to me was the variety of options they had available (sweet and savory), particularly vegan options. Everywhere you turned, there was another freshly baked good to look at. They have a ton of coffee options, and you can get almond or soy milk. The best part is the people in the store! They're incredibly nice. This bakery is amazing! I love the owners so much! They are so humble and work so hard. They are always kind and their bread is delicious!!! My favorite is their coconut tart and egg custard.
