I've been a patient here my whole life- back when there were No Cavity Club field trips for the little kids. You can tell the staff and dentists are like family and care about their patients. I've never been scared of going to the dentist- Dr. Mu has nimble little fingers (for reaching deep in your mouth) and is great with kids. The other dentists and staff all are knowledgable and have a great sense of humor (and strong Boston accents!) The office is run like a well-oiled machine- super efficient and professional. ugh. I had heard good things about this place - primarily that you could get the x-rays that go around your head instead of being choked by the typical x-rays bite down on these things nonsense. welp. That's not true. They don't have that. Also, according to the dental hygienist, YOU HAVE NO CHOICE. YOU MUST SUBMIT TO THE X-RAY!! Ya, I told both the hygientist and dentist that need to work on their informed consent. I was going to walk out but then they had the dentist do the cleaning instead. That dentist definitely needs to stick to his day job - which shouldn't be dentistry. He kept dropping the instruments on my arm. When he flossed my teeth, he couldn't really get the floss between some of the teeth. Apparently they aren't equipped with sinks so you get have to swallow or get vacuumed up - which he didn't really know how to do. Family Dental is basically what's wrong with dentistry. Family dental has been our dentist for 25 years! They are like family. Wonderful dentists, hygienist and staff.

I went to Family Dental because I was unhappy with my previous dentist. I had a cap fall of after a year and the dentist wouldn't glue it back on. So I asked friends who they go to and 3 of them said Family Dental. I am so glad I went there. The service is great, I love the Hygentist and the dentist, although I couldn't tell you their names. read more

I should have known the first time I walked in there with my son who was about 4 years old at the time that this was anything but a family-friendly place. My son was apprehensive going in and the response from the hygienist bringing us to the room was "Oh I'm not dealing with this! He doesn't want to be here!" Really?? No kidding. He's 4 years old and nervous but thanks for the compassion. My husband and I stayed on as patients out of pure convenience. About a year ago both of us needed crowns at the same time which, if you don't have insurance, is quite costly ~ $3,000 to be exact. When I came out of my appointment after getting my crown and went to the desk, the girl looking for payment for both was extremely rude. She told me that I had to be pay for both right now and that I should have never been allowed to even sit in the chair because payment wasn't made in advance. There was a room full of people in the waiting room and I was so embarrassed because we didn't have $3,000 to hand over. She told me I couldn't leave until it was paid. I asked if I could do a payment plan and got a flat out NO!! Ended up having to put it on a credit card with high interest. The hygienist who cleaned my teeth for many years moved on, and her good work and excellent interpersonal skills are the reasons I kept booking appointments. (I only saw actual dentists once in a while. Their work seemed fine.) I have found a different dentist in another town. read more

I love this place! I live in New York and drive all the way here for appointments. Dr. Mu is the nicest lady and the entire staff (and many of her patients!) has been with her for decades. I'm not sure what the other negative reviews are talking about as I've always had positive experiences since I started coming here, 5 years ago. read more

Not sure when they update their skills or techniques. I have had difficulty after visits including pain where the Novocaine was injected, and teeth cracking after they drill. Going to change dentists. read more

I have been going here for 2 years, and have yet to see a dentist. I get my teeth cleaned, but the dentist is never there to check my mouth. They always bill the insurance company, though, for a consultation, as well as the cleaning. Last time I was there I mentioned I am having jaw pain every morning. The young hygienist , of course, said "TMJ, if you'd like to see the dentist, he should be here soon." Sorry, but I work, and couldn't wait. The dentist is NEVER there! I plan on informing the insurance company that they are being billed for nonservice, and speaking to my doctor regarding the jaw pain. read more

I had been going here for 3 years, and at that time the only complaint I had was the secretary wasn't the nicest person... Recently I had my 3 month cleaning due on a Saturday afternoon (I took a half day just to make sure I had this appointment because it takes so long to book), prior to Saturday of my appointment I was called 3 times to ask if I could come in earlier than 1:30, I got out of work at 1 driving from Charlestown to reading so I said I will try and come in as soon as I can. Unexpected traffic occurred and at 1:25 I was being gracious and called to let them know I would be a few minutes late (I was getting off the 95 exit at this point/the reading exit) the secretary (who now I believe to be one of the RUDEST people in customer service) told me we would have to RESCHEDULE your appointment. I was only going to be at the most 5 minutes late and I was being nice by giving them a heads up. I called back and told her how unfair this situation was and all she said was "well now you'll be 10 minutes late if you come in".. I work in health care and I couldn't believe how inconsiderate this was, and how terrible the customer service was...... Do your self a favor and go to any other dentist office than this one. read more

I had been going here for a few years and had no issues (other than front desk being SO unfriendly). I had an old filling that was bothering me so the dentist told me I needed a crown or I was going to need a root canal. So I went in for the crown. It was very stressful and took a long long time. They finally fitted me for the temporary crown which wasn't going on well at all. The assistant told me to bite down and I did and it cracked! She was upset "Not that hard" - Yeah, thanks. Anyway, I sat through the whole temp crown creation and fitting again. I then went back to get my permanent crown. It didn't really fit right - my bite felt off no matter how much they adjusted it but I figured i would get used to it. When I got home, the tooth was really sensitive. I found that I could actually touch the tooth underneath with my fingernail and the pain was horrible! I went back and they "patched" it with some stuff. It was better but still didn't fit right. The crown never went down to my gums so there has always been a hairline space and the edges are jagged. So 3 years later my bite is still off but they can't seem fix it. I switch dentists (another practice) and she fixes the poor fit a bit so it's a little better. Sensitivity gets worse and after a while I can not longer chew on it (back molar) without it hurting. My new dentist tells me I need to see an endodontist for a root canal and then I will need a new crown due to the leaky margins of the crown that caused the need for the root canal. So, I got the crown to avoid the root canal and because it was so poorly done, I ended up needing one anyway and a replacement crown in less than 4 years! And the replacement will be entirely out of my pocket! The poor fit has caused all kinds of jaw/bite issues for me as well. The new dentist tells me that the "patch" job they did is a joke because what they used doesn't bond to porcelain that the crown is made of. If it had been done properly in the first place, I would never have needed the root canal, my bite wouldn't be messed up and I wouldn't be out $1000+ to replace it. Avoid this place at all costs. read more

Family Dental did not provide the proper care for my 6 year old, which resulted in a much more significant issue than if they detected the problem early on. Family Dental missed giving what should have been standard x-rays to a 5.5-6.5 yr old and also missed a serious infection that required antibiotics. I'd recommend a pediatric dental facility for children, so that your child is not having to undergo the number of procedures my daughter now needs to have done. Very disappointed. read more
