Do not get a puppy from here. They sell sick puppies. We were told at purchase if the pet is seen at "their recommended vet" within the first week of purchase for diarrhea, Family Pet will cover full cost of visit. However, our puppy has diarrhea with lots of mucus in it and has only been home for 4 days. I called their recommended vet and was told they don't have availability for 10+ days and they have made Family Pet well aware of that. So, they're still selling sick puppies and getting out of having to pay the vet visit due to the vet -they will pay- not having availability. A SCAM! Don't do it. Learn from our mistake. She had Kennel cough when I took her home and I had no idea what it was but I was suppose to get a refund on my vet visit from the pet store but they said I was "too late". Plus, the service here sucks. I've never met a chick that didn't like making a sale. Like fake the enthusiasm at least. Damn girl even had the audacity to give me an attitude when I was asking simple questions about the dog I'm about to adopt. This pet store has many supplies, is well organized, and clean. It is located inside of Greenbrier Mall in Chesapeake. There are pets in this store, dogs and cats are in the back and as much as it breaks my heart to see animals like this, they do have spacious and clean cages. I just want to adopt them all! They are really adorable. I did just read on Family Pet's website that they do not get their dogs from puppy mills, but instead go to breeders. There is a nice FAQ section on the website that may answer some of your questions. Reptiles and Amphibians are also sold at the store, as well as rabbits. The products here are pretty expensive though, and you can probably find a better price after shopping around a bit. read more

This place is like a prison for puppies. If you are a dog person I would strongly advise not going here. The puppies aren't socialized, they all look sad and literally are kept like rodents. They are on metal grates in the window and I saw a man in the back man handling a puppy. They don't bathe the puppies, I held one and it broke my heart into pieces how sad and smelly it was. Family Pet Center is located on the second floor inside the Greenbrier mall, across from the food court. Good things first - This store is very clean for the most pet stores, they carry many different good quality harness for the pets, and most pets look healthy, even the dogs that are probably from the mills. Bad things - Everything in there is insanely expensive. The staffs were found not amazing experienced with the reptiles. They think a 10 - 20 gallon tank is sufficient for the turtles and the rodents. The staffs in there are usually in a hurry and would not finish all questions I asked. We came in looking for a Golden Retriever or a Goldendoodle and they just got 2 males and 2 females in of each. We played with all of them and the female Golden Retriever seemed to interact with us more and more willing to play. The kids loved her, the wife loved her, so... I loved her as well! We worked with Dillon during the transaction, the puppies just came in so they had to be cleared by the vet first so we had to wait until the next day to pick her up. We paid the deposit and he called the next day when she was ready. Dillon was an excellent employee and made a great impression. He left us alone with the puppies and would check on us randomly and would answer any questions he had. If you go in I would recommend asking for Dillon to help you as you know you will get quality service and he is a no BS kind of guy. You HAVE to take your new pup to their veterinarian to be covered under their in-store warranties at Bay Beach Veterinarian, so we did and it turns out we will be keeping them as our Vet! They are very attentive and friendly. Overall this has been a great experience and I would go back to Dillion any day when we look to expand our pack! read more

The first thing that we noticed was the cleanliness of the store. The cleanliness and the adorable puppies were the only things we liked about the store. My husband and I wanted to take one puppy to the play room to interact with him and see if he would be a good fit in our family. Considering the fact that the store was not busy at all, it took longer than we would have liked just to get someone to help us. I asked if we could take the puppy to the play area, but the sales lady first had to make sure that we were there to play with or buy a puppy. That really irked us. These puppies come from puppy mills! Animals who are bred through mills have more health problems than those who come from responsible local breeders. These puppies START off at $1800+ and many of them are mixed breed. I've been in this store many times and even convinced one of the staff to let me play with a golden retriever puppy. Even if I didn't agree with puppy mill dogs being sold inside this pet store, I will not forgive how skinny this dog was. I could easily feel every bone and his spine protruded but since it was fluffy, you couldn't tell just by looking at him. The staff here is also quite rude I've noticed and will not let you see the pups unless you thoroughly convince them you will buy them, which I find odd. If you don't believe me, try it and look up the information they provide you on where the dogs come from. If you love dogs, do not buy from this horrid place. My fiance and I went in just to look at the puppies, NOT expecting to fall in love! We were not planning on getting a puppy for maybe another year so I had been looking at the SPCA for a Shiba Inu or a German Shepard. I was strongly against purchasing from a pet store because of puppy mill horror stories. The day we went in for fun, there was one Shiba. We wanted to take her in the little play room but she was on hold...so I remembered a cute faced little Australian Shepherd that, (as much as I would hate to admit) stole my heart. We took her in the room and she was the sweetest little pup I have ever met. She was calm but playful and even though she was not the breed we thought we wanted, we both felt like it was meant to be. Naturally I tried to drive this feeling away, firing rather harsh questions and remarks at the staff member helping us, saying "wonder where the mill she came from is?" and "you know how many health and genetic problems she probably has?" The staff was calm and polite, explaining to us that they get the puppies from legit breeders, not mills. She told us they also have a health guarantee for two year if any genetic problems arise. What impressed me the most was the 14-day guarantee that if the puppy was sick, they would pay for ALL the bills and vet costs. Even more impressive was the two year genetic health guarantee, most breeders I have researched don't even have that! The staff was kind and knowledgeable, and in my case very patient. We ended up going back that night to see her again, then two days later to buy her. She is by far the smartest dog I've ever had. She has a fantastic personality and from day one was easily house trained. Unfortunately, I did notice an odd cough getting worse and knew it was kennel cough, took her to the vet they recommended and they said she didn't have it. A few days later it was so bad we took her in again and they confirmed it, she had kennel cough for about a month/month and a half. Now, 3 vet visits and all that medication would be expensive right? Family Pet Centered paid for all the visits, AND medication. We didn't pay a penny out of pocket. The reason being, if the dog has a health issue within 14 days of purchase, you call them and they pay for it. Period. That's just good business. I have to admit however the kennel cough was a pain in the butt to deal with. She couldn't be around other dogs so we couldn't socialize her, and it made us sad knowing she was sick. Remember when reading negative reviews that some complaints could be because of the owners negligence. It is a nice place and we couldn't ask for a better puppy, we have no regrets. read more

I only wish I could give less stars. We purchased our puppy Nov 15th. After 2 nights we did some research on what seemed to be a cough and had suspicions it might be kennel cough. After calling the pet store, we were advised to take him to their vet so they could pay for the visit and medications. Turns out he had an upper respiratory infection. Something you think should have been found at the pet store and treated there. We took great care to make sure he was getting his medicines. We kept him close by to make sure he was getting full care and attention. I hate reliving this as I'm typing but it was Nov. 21st and we were all winding down for the night. I found our puppy lifeless and not breathing. I tried to administer cpr to the best of my ability. I called the only vet that was open which just happened to be the only emergency vet available to me and this vet happens to be 40 minutes away from me. They advised to bring him in to see if there was anything they could do. I knew there was nothing they could do, but I didn't know what else to do. The cpr and breaths weren't working. My family and I drove 40 minutes away to the vet knowing full well there was nothing they would be able to do and even if there was we wouldn't be able to get there in time. Whatever happened it was already too late. When I arrived the the vet, they put me in another room and took the puppy. They informed me there was nothing they could do and the only options were cremation or home burial. This puppy had made our family so happy in such a short time. We hadn't even had him for a full week. I didn't want to bury him. If I couldn't have him alive then I wanted to be able to have him with us in some way so I chose to have him cremated. I took the next day off work trying to process everything that had happened. Why was his time cut so short with us? It just wasn't fair. It was even harder to explain to my 4 y/o son that his little buddy went to doggy heaven and wasn't coming back. At the time all I could think about was why our time with him was so short. I also felt horrible for thinking it but at the same time I just spent a lot of money on a dog that didn't last a week. So I called the pet store to ask about their warranty. I was informed they would need a necropsy to even think about getting our money back. So I called the vet to see about getting a necropsy. They had informed me it was too late. Our puppy had already been picked up for cremation. I called the pet store back to inform them it was too late and that my puppy had already been picked up for cremation. They replied "sorry for your loss" and then proceeded to hang up directly after saying that. Honestly the whole thing that bothers me wasn't not getting a refund or the fact that he was sick when we recieved him it was the amount of disrespect it took for them to hang up on me like that. I'm not sure what else I was expecting but it damn sure wasn't that. After a while we started to wonder about getting another dog and wondered the chances of receiving another puppy possibly from the same litter or another litter later on possibly. When I looked it up all I could find about the breeder was nothing but articles saying to avoid these breeders if at all possible because they were highly suspected of being a puppy mill. Update to my 'not recommended' review: our dog only lasted 4 1/2 years in total. He has been through three different surgeries, close to 10k$, and he still died at age 4 of a lymphatic disorder. This dog had problems from the day we brought him home. He was my heart and now I am heart broken. This business is unethical. My dogs breeder was not in compliance with usda. The pet store did not honestly represent this information to us. This was not the first or last time this breeder was used to produce puppies for this store. They were not unaware. I want to also address comments in the review dated 6/23/10. They will tell you they use reputable breeders and not puppy mills. This is because a puppy mill will never advertise itself as such. We investigated our 'breeder'. They were out of Kansas and their operation was monitored by the usda (red flag #1). They had not complied with any except the first of their usda inspections (red flag #2). And there was no way they could be contacted (at this point, we knew). This store did not have a 'relationship' with the breeder beyond 'give me your puppies and I'll give you my money'. read more

Okay...there are a number of reviews on here that have nothing to do with this Pet Store, just how they feel about Pet Stores in general...Which is wrong. With that in mind...here is my opinion of this business, but first why we chose it... Over the past 10 years my husband and I went to the Humane League and got 2 dogs, at different times. One older dog and one puppy. To make a long story short, neither dog worked out with our family. We found that one was abused and not screened properly and the puppy was not the breed we were told and wasn't a good fit with our kids. In fact, the puppy tried numerous times to attack my daughter. When we inquired with the Vet about what we could do, he said, nothing. We were training the dog properly, it was just she should have been placed with a family with older kids in their teens. So with that in mind, and we didn't want to see our children heart broken again we didn't get another pet for years. We are HUGE supporters of the Humane League, SPCA...etc...but we were nervous about getting another animal there not knowing the parentage, temperment...etc...We kept looking for a dog, but were unable to find one to fit our criteria. One day, on impulse, we just thought, lets go check out a pet store. Which is how we ended up here. We have never bought a dog from a store before so we didn't know what to expect. We stayed at the store for hours. The staff was very helpful, kind and patient. We found our dog and fell in love with him. In fact, the staff went above and beyond looking for answers to questions we had. The dog we picked is an Australian Shepherd and he is fantastic! We know his parentage, through the breeder, we have customized his training for his breed and he is awesome with my children. We took him to the Vet and he has said we have a great dog, healthy and the best breed for our family. Do I understand the problem with puppy mills and some pet stores. Yes. But this is a FAMILY OWNED, PRIVATE business that works with legit breeders. They have a vet come in once a week to check the animals, the cages are clean, the store is nice, clean and in order....etc... For people who are concerned, they have paper work on every dog. We couldn't be more happier with our choice and going to this store. After everything we went through before, this was the best choice for our family. They are getting four star because it is pricey. Thecost for the dog is understandable. Not only are you paying for the breed, but also shots, medicine, Vet visits, transport of the animal...etc...but the food, toys, beds, everything in there is expensive. I would also recommend they clean up the area they hand the dog off to the new family. You can't bring the dog through the mall so you have to meet the staff at their back door...However, It is right next to a nasty dumpster and there is a mess in every corner. I can't understand people who say they "would never adopt from here". We all know that there has been tons of negative media about puppy mills and they are awful, but doesn't mean all pet stores are part of the the puppy mill industry. Also, just because a puppy/dogs sits in a small box/cage, doesn't make the pet store a terrible place! News flash!! Whether the puppy/dog is in a pet store, animal shelter or pound, they are still sitting in a cage,"cell" or boxed in area and tons of people adopt dogs and then take them home to crate train them or kennel them while they are at work. Dogs are den animals! Dogs are being breed and born no matter where they end up. Just because a puppy ends up in a pet store doesn't mean that they shouldn't be loved as well. My first dog and my 2 cats all were adopted from shelters and I don't love them any more or less an my new aussie puppy we got from Family Pets. We received papers and info on him and his parents (which by the way, you can now go on the internet and track the parents and find out information about them and where they came from to all those people who think all pet store are supplied puppies from puppy mills). With that being said, I'm not here to make some big political, moral or ethical stand on the matter. I am just here to say that all animals should be loved no matter where they come from and my experience with this particular pet store company was great! The store was bright, clean and the staff was friendly ( and no i am in no way affiliated with anyone who works there) and my puppy is healthy and thriving. He passed his breed exam and has had all his shots and no signs of inbreeding are present. I just wish that people wouldn't bash stores where they haven't even done business with them!!! I was not told "no" when we asked to play with our puppy or to hold him. As far as the price goes, yes many people say they are over priced and they paid to much, but as many of us know, it depends on the breed. And yes of course you could look on the internet or in the paper and possibly find someone selling the breed you want for half the price this pet store charges, but you may also be buying from a backwoods breeder who is running their own puppy mill who offers you no exchange, refund, return, guarantee, papers, ect. I have never wanted to leave a pet store so fast but this was too much for me to handle. Now seeing posts about puppy mills. Yes, pets stores get puppies from there BUT everyone should know not every breeder is looking for the puppy's best interest. There will be that one screw up breeder that the pet store will trust and ends up sending them a puppy mill pup and of course the pets stores find out, report, and return the puppy. I've held off on writing a review of this place for 2 reasons, 1) because it's slightly embarrassing. 2) because, let's be real, who Yelps pet stores?? My boyfriend, for months, had been talking about nothing but getting a French Bulldog. We decided to wait until we bought our own house since we currently rent & already have a Boxer. Our landlords are angels and really don't care how many animals we have, but pets are like kids and become a monthly expense just like anything else. Fast forward, my bf had, on a whim, walked into this place to see if they had any Frenchies. There was none at the time but they just so happened to be getting some in the following week. When he came home & told me the story I was kinda ehh about it because I, like everyone else with half a brain in America, said I'd never purchase a dog from a pet store. Too many what ifs involved. Fast forward again and I find myself sitting the "get to know each other area" cuddling and falling completely head over heels in love with who would come to be known as Big House. (my bf is a HUGE Michigan fan & if you know anything about college football, then you understand) Long story short, we purchased Biggie and all in all were extremely lucky. Biggie will be a year old on January 10th, is happy, healthy, and has the most lovable, huggable, kissable, snuggly little personality ever. He has skin issues, but it is a breed thing. Nothing to do with the store. The reason for 2 stars is mostly because I would personally deter anyone from doing what we did. It was on a whim and crazy/stupid. So far this is what I found on this breeder: --Martha and Jimmy Kibbe, Beloit, Kansas--(a broker who ships puppies) Oct. 25, 2005: "Cocker puppy #G1969 with a birth date of 9/27/04 was purchased on 11/20/04. The puppy in question does not meet the 8 week age requirement before being sold into commerce." [Puppies are supposed to be 8 weeks old before crossing state lines.] January 23, 2006: They received these violations on their "clamshell-type plastic enclosures" used for transport. "9 'clamsell-type' plastic enclosures containing 18 puppies had no doors and were constructed in a manner that did not allow the animals contained inside to be easily and quickly removed in the event of an emergency." January 23, 2006: "9 'clamshell-type' plastic enclosures containing 18 puppies had 'handles' that consisted of 3"x5" oblong openings in the side of the crate. It did not have external handholds that ensured that anyone handling the enclosures would not com into physical contact with the animal contained inside." The old heavy blonde woman that works there has a very bad attitude. I came to inquire about one of the dogs and she dismissed me when I asked if they were getting a certain one in. If she is the supervisor she needs to work on her manners. Not my problem you work at a pet store at 50 years old. Also these pups are sick all sorts of problems with them. This place needs to be investigated. Please don't spend money here. Buy from a rescue center. Put these pet stores out of business. The young lady was nice about my request for a guinea pig. But the past few times I have been there the old lady always seems to have a problem. Needs a severe attitude adjustment. read more

We eventually filed a case in small claims court and they finally decided to refund us. The good news is they told us Buddy is living happy with a few other dogs. Too bad we had to file in court, but they decided to give us our refund instead. read more

LIES!!! We bought a puppy for over 2000 dollars and food drom them the food made him sick we took him straight to the vet for a huge bill but thats not the problem we were PROMISED ! More than once he was akc buy store staff but convently we were told his paper work would be mailed to u s lie number one waited 2 weeks nothing so we called them then they said we had to pay for the paper but we got that fixed well the papers came and what would you guess hes apr also known as cant be akc d lie number 2 then we called them out and they said the never said that after alot of vet bills the puppys doing fine and has a loving home but PLEASE DONT BUY A PUP FROM THEM ! read more
