I would never get a pet from here and I can't even walk past the "adoption" aisle. Yes, it's clean but it's sad. There are plenty of opportunities to adopt from pounds and shelters without "buying" an animal. But if you're looking for accessories for your fish tank, these folks have a decent and not-unreasonably prices selection of items.

I bought my precious Shiba Inu baby girl here and I'm so glad I got her out of there. She had Kennel cough when I took her home and I had no idea what it was but I was suppose to get a refund on my vet visit from the pet store but they said I was "too late". Plus, the service here sucks. I've never met a chick that didn't like making a sale. Like fake the enthusiasm at least. Damn girl even had the audacity to give me an attitude when I was asking simple questions about the dog I'm about to adopt. And it's much worse if you're a possible interested customer on the weekends and you're trying to pet/play with a dog, they're just going to assume you're not interested in buying one and basically tell you to fck off because they're busy. Lol no actually, they won't allow you to pet/play with a pet because "you don't seem interested" so therefore, they won't bring out the dog because they're busy and you apparently don't look like a serious buyer. Fck outta here. Guys, work on your customer service skills, this is why your animals look sad. Love my dog though.

This pet store has many supplies, is well organized, and clean. It is located inside of Greenbrier Mall in Chesapeake. There are pets in this store, dogs and cats are in the back and as much as it breaks my heart to see animals like this, they do have spacious and clean cages. I just want to adopt them all! They are really adorable. I did just read on Family Pet's website that they do not get their dogs from puppy mills, but instead go to breeders. There is a nice FAQ section on the website that may answer some of your questions. Reptiles and Amphibians are also sold at the store, as well as rabbits. The products here are pretty expensive though, and you can probably find a better price after shopping around a bit.

Was a bit afraid to purchase because puppy mills etc. but he's adorable and healthy. Overall very happy.

We were not planning on getting a puppy for maybe another year so I had been looking at the SPCA for a Shiba Inu or a German Shepard.

The talking parrot was fun to mess around and conversation with. There is a lot going on at this pet store. Everything is alive and meant for people who have a fish hobby or looking to explore their reptile section. The smell of pets in the air is bearable consider they carry many little animals like guinea pig, hamsters, snakes and lizards. But perhaps their carpet can get some shampooing. But I get it, they have free roaming turtoises on the loose, leaving gifts for the pet store associates to clean without a doubt. They have the a lot of fresh water fish selections, I'd advise people looking for salt water, swimming friends ...to go else where.

HUGE MISTAKE! Within days of purchasing crickets from this place, both of my crested geckos are dead. They lived in separate terrariums next to each other, and were very different ages (9 y/o and around 1 y/o). All conditions were EXACTLY the same besides where I purchased the crickets from, and within 3-4 days, both of my healthy geckos were dead! Following this incident, my mother and I called the store and the initial woman who picked up directed me to the owner, Jeff, who immediately gave extreme attitude and disregarded our concerns. I wouldn't advise anyone to buy insects for their beloved reptiles from this establishment. With heavy hearts, RIP Shawn and Shawna. P.S. that tank is NOT big enough for that alligator snapping turtle. No wonder the damn thing doesn't move, IT CAN'T!

Happy vibes here!…read more This is absolutely the place to go if you loving caring for your feathered (even furry squirrel) friends. Or if you prefer to keep the squirrels at bay and cater to the birds, they've got solutions for that too! I've been patronizing this store for many years and renew my $25 membership yearly. The membership is a great option if you shop regularly as it provides a discount every time you shop. With the amount I spend annually on bird food, it pays for itself in dividends. The staff is incredibly welcoming, and have fielded my questions about dealing with annoying starlings and black birds and what to offer my songbirds with the changing seasons. I also love that they stock thoughtful gifts like jewelry, cards, books, garden flags, bird baths and other decor. At the holidays, they have packages for anyone interested in starting a new birding hobby with tips and tricks. And once (or maybe twice) a year, they offer a feeder trade in event to get new, discounted feeders. Most of my dollars here are spent on the food, which is high quality (so don't expect to pay what you would for a bag of filler at Lowe's or Home Depot). That also means the birds don't throw most of it on the ground looking for the "good stuff." A 20# bag lasts me quite a long time in an air-tight container. I also enjoy picking out a couple of ornaments each year from their ever-changing selection. What's most valuable to me about WBU is that they have allowed me to spend more time outside in our backyard with my daughter, who at under 2 years, can already identify a cardinal, Carolina bluebird, finch, titmouse, chickadee, wren, sparrow and, yes, even a dreaded starling! The staff knows their stuff and they clearly love what they do!

Quick Stop at Pet Supplies Plus…read more Okay, so we usually go to PetSmart for our essentials, but today we decided to try something new and check out Pet Supplies Plus -- mostly because it's way closer to home. Sometimes convenience wins, right? We popped in to grab Lexi's usual -- Hill's Science Diet for Sensitive Stomachs (bougie bellies only ‍) -- and let me tell you, they had a huge selection of dog food options. The store was pretty busy but well-stocked, which is always a good sign. I wish I had taken some photos (next time, I promise!), but I did take a quick stroll down the aisles to see if they had any dog clothes... and sadly, no outfits in sight. You know Lexi doesn't go anywhere without a fit check, so we always scope out the fashion section. On the bright side, they had: Tons of treats A great variety of toys Leashes, collars, and accessories ...but no sparkle, no glam, no bougie wear The price for our dog food was a bit higher than what we usually pay at other spots, but for the convenience of being so close to home, it worked out just fine this time. So would we go back? Maybe for quick pickups. But for fashion? We'll have to keep looking.

(Review based on the bird department)…read more This place was absolutely FANTASTIC! I'm not a bird owner, just a person who likes to hang out with feathered friends every once in a while. The staff for the bird section was absolutely wonderful and answered all the questions we had. It's very important to consider that THESE ARE LIVING BEINGS. Treat them with respect, handle with care, etc. If you choose to handle the birds, there IS a possibility of you getting bit, clawed, pooped on, etc. and it's NOT anywhere close to zero. I advise being especially careful with the macaws, who bite HARD. They have very strong beaks, muscles, and claws that can easily punch holes in skin and scratch. Even the smaller birds are quite nippy, but aren't as likely to break skin (though they certainly do sometimes). Most of the nipping and biting can be attributed to affection, but is just as likely to cause infection (a fun play on words, but still true!). If you don't know how to handle birds, do not go in expecting to come out a professional, or go in with the expectation of all of the birds immediately loving you. These birds see upwards of hundreds of people a day and likely have no idea what to expect from you. I recommend talking with the employees, who I can't guarantee are all as nice as the people we talked to, but likely know the birds at least a little bit, and can help children and people wanting to interact in a safer way than just involving without caution.

I should have listened to the reviews and looked for another store…read more I have been looking for a parrot to bring into the family for a while. I've done plenty of research online, but this was my first time going to look at birds in person. Seeing this was a family run business, I decided to bring my business here rather than a big box store. Big mistake. Almost everyone working seemed to be stuck up teenagers and young adults. My family was in the store for about 30 min and not a single employee offered any assistance. Not even a simple hello. The bird section was absolute chaos. There's TONS of birds jammed into a small corner of the store which seems to be, by far, their most popular animal. The aisles are cramped and it's hard to hear anything with all the birds chirping away. There were 2 employees feeding/ tending to birds. They were pretty much ignoring everyone. I tried to ask a few questions about different species, yet I felt like an annoyance to them.. then I simply got told, if you're new to birds, just get a cockatiel. The guy wouldn't really give any information on any of the other species. I'm trying to make sure I have everything I need in my home before buying a bird, but it seems like they'd rather you just pay $$ now and quit bothering them. There's a bunch of signs up saying NO PICTURES everywhere. It felt like a prison with the wide variety of threatening signs all over the place. I did notice the cages seemed very over priced. An A&E cage I saw on Chewy for $300 was marked up to like $700 in there. The cockatiels were a couple hundred dollars more than Pet Smart. I wanted to avoid going to somewhere like Pet Smart or Petco to get a pet bird, but after this experience, I'll just take my business there. At least they have employees that seem like they care about helping customers. It's a shame to see a local business that can't provide better service than corporate big box stores. If it wasn't for your exorbitant prices, I suspect you'd be out of business by now.
