Steamboat Bills is a Lake Charles tradition! I usually go to their lakefront location, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with the location on Martin Luther King Highway! In addition to being a great seafood restaurant, it's also a seafood market where you can pick up things to cook at home. It's convenient to I-10, so travelers could easily exit, eat, and get back on the road. This is a simple and easy place to navigate when you know the method. First grab a menu or look at the one on the wall, next walk up to the counter and order and pay. You'll get a number you carry to a table. A server will bring you your food when it's ready, which generally is pretty quick. Then you eat and leave. What to eat? Well that's a good question! Most everything there is great. Seafood is the star of the show, and one can't go wrong with a seafood platter. This is a huge pile of everything that can serve two normal humans. Too often I ordered the Medium Shrimp Platter, there's nothing wrong with this choice, but I needed to try other different things. A Seafood Stuffed Baked Potato is a great choice, and very filling. For the grazers there are some solid whole meal salads. Last time I was in I just got a Fish Platter, which has two huge fillets with fries, coleslaw, and bread. We came here on a whim while passing through and I'm so glad we did! We had the fried pickles, fried mushrooms l, and cheese sticks. They were all fabulous but the cheese sticks could have been a little warmer, cheese had no cheese pull and kind of cold, but still good. This is 2nd time I've been here as I am from Cali. This place is very good. I got the gumbo and deep fried boudin balls. They included a dinner roll as well. The dinner roll was actuay very good. The boudin balls were nice and crispy and very spicy, which is perfect for me. The gumbo is good, made using a roux. I thought it was better the last time I was here, but its still good. We found this restaurant several years ago driving from Houma, La to Katy, Texas. It was one of the only restaurants we could find open on January 1st. Since then, we stop almost every time we go to visit family or if we are going to the casino in Lake Charles. The atmosphere is laid back, cozy, and welcoming. The staff has been quite friendly, and the last time we were there, our waiter recognized us. Our favorite thing to order is the chicken and andouille sausage gumbo. Being from south Louisiana, I am quite picky on ordering gumbo, but seriously we have not been disappointed, and I order it every time. It is seasoned deliciously with a just right consistency roux to me. We also ordered the crawfish étouffée. It was rich and buttery. I am glad we shared it. We will be back. read more

Service is always on point, and the environment is a true pleasure just sitting in taking in all the life style of the true Cajun culture. You not only feel engulfed in the aesthetics of the interior, but you truly feel welcome there. I don't know the guy's name, but whoever runs the front of the house as far as the service/waiter he was an African-American gentleman with dreadlocks or rolls, pulled back tight, real cool guy and just really nice which and we are not talking about a one hit wonder he is consistently showing phenomenal service. Very average to below for a variety of reasons....the $24.99 fishermen's platter had one piece of fish that was cardboard thin and even tho they claim their shrimp are only Louisiana, I did not get that impression at all.....platter had about 8 shrimp, some were local but others clearly not so....chewy, small and breaded completely different that the others. Stuffed crab was fine as were the french fries, slaw was watery and not too appealing really. Side salad for $4.99 was nice but $3.49 for a soda? Thats a bit exorbitant especially getting two with dinner, total splitting a platter drinks and salad just over $40 bucks....not worth it. Another odd thing here is you take a menu and then cozy up to the cashier counter to place your order after paying and they charge 4 1/2% if you use a credit card. Naw.....I wouldn't come back if ever on my way through Lake Charles again..... read more

We were disappointed! The crawfish etouffee had little to no crawfish, it looked like just only roux over the rice. The red beans and rice had only 2 slices of sausage, all beans. First time at this location (the other location we frequent was doing some upgrades and repairs). Service was great when we were seated. The girls bringing our good and the one taking care of the tables needs were all very friendly and sweet. The one working the front counter on the other hand appeared to be annoyed and not want to be working. I saw her talk to other staff members and was laughing and kidding around so obviously it wasn't her mood for the day, just that she didn't want to dark with people. Stopped here on my way back home to Texas. Went based on reviews and seeing that they had crawfish. Unfortunately for me I was late in the season, so no crawfish. My family and I still ordered and dined in. First off, the young lady at the counter was super amicable and helpful. The rest of staff were also very nice, many employees there. The place was nicely set up with lots of tables and very clean! We got our food and it was nice portions. Really liked the stuffed shrimp and stuffed crab. Fish fillets and fried shrimp were also good. Chicken poboy, the chicken was really well seasoned and good! The coleslaw was also very delicious.! One CAN NOT visit Louisiana and NOT try some authentic Cajun cook'n (sorry, my Southern drawl is coming out ;-) ). Unfortunately, Crawfish are out of season :-( . So, I'm not able to "pinch head, and suck tail" :-o (no insult here. That is what it's called). But, catfish is year round. 8-) OMG!! That was absolutely delicious! Except for the roll, which was soft with a firm crust, everything was piping hot. 8-) While they were too many fries for me to finish everything, the catfish remain hot from first bite until last. And, unlike the "Louisiana Kitchen" Chicken franchise that most of us are used to, the Cajun spices here are a lot milder. As a matter of fact, the cocktail sauce ws spicier. Though, it does kind of sneak up on youb, it doesn't blow the top of your head off either. For more spiciness, you need authentic Bayou cooking. And, unlike my experiences with a lot of different fish, this did not need the accompaniment of tartar sauce, cocktail sauce or ketchup. Though, I did try a bite with each. Also a very popular dish here is the crab plate that you see pictured. While I was there, I counted three orders being served. We ordered our food and attempted to get Sweet Tea (a staple of the south) and they had completely ran out. Our food was brought to our table in about 15 quick mins. It was piping out and fresh with NO SEASONING.Maybe I'm a picky Texan, I don't know but everything was Bland... it was suggested I come here from a native so I obliged. I finished my appetizer as my main course arrived I ate one bite then noticed a (curly black hair) in my fried fish. Called my waiter over & kindly displayed the hair opposed to my (long straight brunette blonde) hair & that I would be requesting my money back & leaving upon this inadequate experience. Utterly unacceptable & shouldn't be taken lightly. Poor management & degrading perverted behavior from the two male cooks of this facility.
