I went to lunch here on Thursday in preparation for the Meatless Friday that was in my near future. They are super fast, polite and serve some very good food. Every once in a while you want to have a hot dog like you did when you were a kid at the ball park. It is definitely not an every day place to visit unless you are planning on doing some serious running after your busy day but its good for a change of pace and a great reward :) "The Good" - The staff is fantastic. They are polite, but it is the sincere polite and not the fake rehashed smalltalk you get at a majority of places. The servers are fast and efficient and have the counter and the tables locked down. The grill man also likes to interact and takes a moment to remember faces and say hello or ask how you have been. - Normally I would put the fact that it is "cash only" in the bad or the meh, so why is it showing up in the good?? Because they give you a free dog with the receipt from the ATM. That's not a bad tradeoff, although I do not know if there is a surcharge. - A decent selection of dogs, Italian sausage and burgers. I have had the dogs but have not veered from that path yet. - They are very affordable for a grab something fast option. "The Meh" - They have the best problem to have... being busy. Chesapeake is insane at lunch as it is but the good places including Al's gets very crowded very fast, Lord knows where all these people come from... "The Bad" - Nothing really bad to comment on. read more

We stopped in here for lunch on Thursday after one of our co-workers came back from lunch and announced "Hey Al's is open again!". I didn't know it was closed... Apparently there had been a problem with the last people that had been managing the place and it had been closed for about 4 months. That's a heck of a long time to have a place closed. Long story short, some more co-workers and I popped on over and the place was packed. Looks like a lot of people had missed Al's. We were able to get ourselves some seats at the counter and ordered up. I had two dogs with mustard and onions with some fries. After I destroyed that, I had another hot dog dressed the same. Lunch was fast and affordable and the new staff was very friendly. I've always wanted to try a burger here. I'm going to have to come back soon and do that. You can't miss them. They're located just a few doors down from Office Depot. read more

So glad this place is back. I have missed have a location near me. I have eaten at the Virginia Beach location when I was in the area but this is so much closer. I always get my dogs well done. Add a splash vinegar on my fries. This location has brewed sweet tea, bonus! Plenty of parking and you may get get lucky and get right up front. Located in a plaza with plenty of stores in walking distance and the mall is across the street or the movie theater is in the other direction. Never had bad service or bad food! This is my go to for birthday lunch! read more

Ehh, not great. The food was scalding hot, and fresh. The process of ordering went very quickly, and our food was done/served in no time at all (the benefit of all pre-made components). I liked the crushed ice for the sweet tea. However, there was absolutely nothing special about the quality of it. Most things were pretty bland. It also all came in super tiny, plain portions (to be expected given the extremely low prices). But, then getting enough to fill up pretty much raised the price to average/higher end fast-food prices. Which in turn... made it more money than it was worth. They had only the most common of toppings (applied very sparsely), on the cheapest bread, and a small selection of sausage (aside from the one actual hotdog). I got almost all of the possible toppings on my dog, and yet it was barely moistened enough (with everything combined) to not be dry. The cheese was not a sauce, but hard rubbery squares. Even though most of the toppings should have packed a punch (chili, sauerkraut, onions, mustard, etc.)... I could barely taste any of them. When you get raw onions on something and yet somehow can't actually taste the onion, you know the tiniest half teaspoon must be on there. A good hotdog should look like a loaded mess, and make a bigger mess to eat...there was so little on it here that it didn't even leave a drop behind or wet the fingers. This place has opened back up, so immediately I stopped in there to give them a shot. As of the time of my visit they still don't have their license for alcohol. For those who have never been here, this place is just a larger version of a "Hot Dog Cart" on a beach boardwalk. To me this isn't a place I can recommend, it's WAY OVERPRICED and the only unique feature they may have is that they use Boar's Head meat.... The food was VERY VERY bland, and I felt ripped off honestly. If you want a hot dog, and one with taste, you are better off going to SONIC and saving your money. read more

I ordered a special for two hot dogs, fries, and a medium drink. The total was supposed to be $6 and some change. My boyfriend ordered a sausage, fries, and drink for $7. Our total somehow came to $20. It was impossible to know our bill was wrong before going to the register because you only get a post it note with some letters scribbled on it to take to the register. We should have mentioned the discrepancy to the cashier but we are comfortable addressing complaints. Our primary disappointment was how terrible the hot dogs were. If you're a hot dog shop, you gotta have decent dogs. Even the appearance of them were pretty appealing. Before I even tasted it my boyfriend said he thought mine didn't look cooked enough. They had a odd texture. They were a little tough despite seemingly underdone. There was no snap to the bite. It seemed barely warmed up. The chili was so bland. I couldn't taste the cheese on it either. The pronounced taste was the bun! The other hot dog was just ketchup and mustard. We also noticed they don't use the ice scoop to fill up the cups. They just dip their bare hands in the ice chest and scoop ice in with your cup. Your know their fingers are in that ice all day. Overall, it was a really awful. My husband loves hot dogs. With my home office being in Chesapeake, he'll often accompany me on a business trip and we turn it into a long weekend to visit the beach or catch up with old friends. Famous Uncle AL's is one of his favorite lunch stops in the Greenbrier area. He can belly up to the bar and order his fill of chili cheese dogs with mustard and onions. Honestly the place is clean, the dogs are good quality and service is quick and friendly. Added bonus, no soggy fries. They have other items on the menu, but we haven't tried anything but the dogs and fries. Nothing here is spectacular, but if you are looking for a quick lunch this place has been a Greenbrier favorite for years. read more

Great hot dogs at the great location. I love going there for the hot dogs and the awesome staffs. It was very close to my home. The food prices are so cheap and the service is super fast, especially during the busiest hours. There are always LONG LINES at this location. Tried there NY Hot Sausage it was quite tasty. Cooked to order. Better then some street vendors in NY. The fries however are your run of the mill crinkle cut. No salt or seasoning is added. I attempted to dress it up with some Balsamic Vinegar however they still were just too bland. Soft drink was served in styrofoam cup with crushed ice which I enjoy. It's ridiculous that I even have to write this, but poor service deserves acknowledgment as much as excellent service does. I walked in today when the location opened and placed an order for two sausages and a drink, with a little assistance from the cashier whom very clearly was pissed that she was on the schedule for the day. Alison was her name, I believe. She made my order and then tossed my bag on the counter in front of me. After paying for my meal and thinking it was a bit short for what I ordered, I checked my bag. Sure enough, there was only one sausage in my bag. I, very politely, told them that I ordered two sausages only to be reprimanded like a child. Alison then responded with "you only ordered one and I had to help you pick which sausage you wanted", which is ok because THAT'S YOUR JOB. I, again, politely said "that's fine. It's not a problem" and she responds with "ok, I'm just letting you know" to which she received "ok, I'm just letting you know to make another one." Had I not already paid, I would have walked out and never returned. I still won't be returning, but thought the general public should know this before attempting to frequent/support a local small business. I've been eating lunch here for over 5 years. As others have said, the staff is friendly, fast, and efficient. There is a very low turnover, and consistency is working very well here. I've not had anything besides the hot dogs. I like mine with sauerkraut, raw onions, and the Boars Head Deli mustard. The fries are fresh cut and fried to perfection. Standing room only at this location on Monday. As luck would have it, we snagged three seats at the counter right as we walked in. This is a great location. They are always busy. The food is consistently good. The same people have been working there for years and years. Consistency pays off! I had a hot dog with chili and onions AND onion rings. Al's has GREAT onion rings. First off, don't bother going here on a Saturday if you're hungry and want to eat after 4 pm. I went today with my mouth set on a hotdog and upon opening the door, I was met with weird stares then "WE'RE CLOSED." Never visiting again. Ended up going to Twisted Crab, and if ever I want a hotdog, I'll go inside Target or drive to Sonic. That shopping center is a prime shopping spot. I just wonder what businessperson with any sense would close at 5 pm on a Saturday. read more

They use Boars Head hot dogs and offer a variety of other foods. The owner himself waited on me. I told him it was my first time eating at his place. I really wanted to love this place but I can't. I like the feel of the building and the service was decent but the food leaves a lot to be desired. My hot dog was rubbery to the point that I felt like I was chewing gum and the tea is bitter. The mozzarella sticks are just frozen ones that they heat in the fryer. Although, my sweet potato fries were pretty good. The food is exactly what you'd expect from a cheapo food truck or concession stand but priced twice as high. I don't think I'll return. read more

I love a great Chili Dog, and Al's puts up some good scores on taste, texture (you know, the chili has to start watery, but juuuuuust eek into the bun and settle up tight on the dog, right.. ? everyone knows that!!), and a quality dog. So I saw a website of famous uncle Al's and thought wow there food looks soooo good. They didn't have what's on the website, but whatever I went with it and decide on a bacon burger. The burger itself was tiny. The lettuce was no existent because it wasn't even a sole and was so transparent I had to wonder wth it even was. One tiny slice of tomato and a dab of ketchup. My son ordered a BLT and it had 2 slices of bacon, another pitiful slice of lettuce and tomato and a glob of mayo. The three stars was because the ladies were nice and the food wasn't horrible just disappointing. It was a burger and BLT I could have made at home. I don't think I'll go back to this location but I am willing to try another. read more
