Fried pickle fries
Anthony M.

The staff was friendly and the wait time was not that long. The fried pickles were good and the firecracker hot dog was also good. It's nice place you can hangout with your friends.

The service is great and they have the best ice. Their drinks taste just how they're supposed to and it is very good to bring 5 people or less. The food is also delicious.

Famous Uncle Al's Chicago Dog

My wife was having a Craving for a hot dog so we decided to go to Famous Uncle Al's. She definitely wanted a foot long hot dog. Little did we know that famous Uncle Al's has 4 locations in Hampton Roads, and they are not all associated with each other.  We initially went to the Uncle Al's on the boulevard however they did not have footlong hot dogs. So we turned around headed to the one (not part of franchise) at Kempsriver. That was probably the best choice to start off with, but we will call it a lesson learned. The staff was super friendly especially Heather when she explained to us about the different Uncle Al's in the area. My wife had a basic foot long hot dog. It was a special on Friday. She topped it with chili, cheese, onions, and mustard. It looked delicious however I was in the mood for something else. I went with thier version of the Chicago Dog. Speaking personally that was a great decision. The combination of ingredients will lead your taste buds In multiple directions. You had the snap of the hot dog and saltiness of the mustard, and pickle combined with the combination of the cooling cucumber and tomatoes. And you can't forget the heat from short pepper and sweetness from the relish. Seriously do I need to say more it was fabulous!!! The only thing that was lacking were the fries needed a little bit of salt but was on the bar for us to use at our will or choice.  Will I go back the better question is how soon will I be back. This is a definite spot to hit when you're in the mood for a hot dog. They have other menu items but why! Thanks for a great Dog and experience.

Cheesy fries

Famous Uncle Al's is a local chain with several locations in Coastal VA - Holland Rd., Shore Dr., the Boulevard, and here in Kemp's River Shopping Center to name a few. They serve many yummy handhelds and are known for their hotdogs, also serving different sausages, burgers (they have a vegan burger patty!), sandwiches like clubs and cheesesteaks, and wraps, along with salads, soups, sides, and desserts. Everything here is also very affordable. I've only been to this location, but here, you seat yourself, or place an order to-go at the counter. There is plenty of seating inside and outside, and the wall inside is lined really cute picture's of the workers' pets. Last time, my sister and I came and and we just split some cheesy fries and a salad, which were both really good. I love their melted cheddar. Their veggies are fresh and portions very generous (they were super nice in splitting our salad into two). But, today I was out and about on my own, and decided to stop in again for a full meal. I was greeted immediately, and sat myself at a cozy booth. My order was taken by a young man who was very helpful with explaining the menu and different options for menu items. I didn't feel rushed to order or like I was a bother. I ended up ordering the veggie burger with extra lettuce & onion, with mayo and coleslaw on the side. I also went with fries and a Dr. Pepper, and for dessert, their NY-style cheesecake with strawberry (you can get caramel, chocolate, or whipped cream too!) My food was brought out quickly and everything was accurate to my order. Their veggie burger is pretty good! The fries were crispy and hot. The coleslaw, I could tell is homemade, and upon asking my server, he confirmed it. He was also kind enough to offer to get me a Dr. Pepper in a to-go cup. I had the cheesecake later that day, and OMG! It is just amazing! Definitely homemade too, super fresh and deliciously rich. I will definitely make it a point to stop in here more often!! Tasty food, great service, and affordable prices - checks all the boxes for sure!!

Look this establishment was clean in the restaurant and bathroom. The staff were super friendly and the overall atmosphere was just wonderful. Now the food mm mm mm so good. I had a spicy sausage with chili, chopped onions, ketchup and mustard with some delicious curly fries. Hubby had the two dogs combo. My almer palmer was perfect. We shall definitely be back soon. Thank you!

Great place! It kind of has an old dive diner type feel to it and I mean that in the best possible way. The food was well priced and it was delicious! We had a hotdog with ketchup-delicious Chili dog-even better! Chili fries-perfect. Crinkle fries Customer service was great

Love the chili dogs
Dave W.

I love a good chili dog and I must say this place met my expectations. The chili was really good . The hotdog was a great quality dog. Staff was friendly and had great sweet tea. I like that they grill the hotdogs. Only thing I would have liked would be a steamed bun . Something about a good soft steamed bun with a hotdog . When I visit the area again I'll be back.

Great little dog place. Quick service with a big ol smile. Good selection of specialty and standard toppings for the natural casing dogs as well as good selection for the folks craving something else.

So i have a serious sweet tooth. I stopped by Famous Uncle Al's for some sugahhhhh!! I got the cookies... I refuse to say the name because they run out sometimes and i don't want everyone to know!! Lol... They are delicious!!! Take them home and microwave them and it'll change your life. I ain't lyin!! Lol.. The people there are really nice and i always have a good experience when i go. They greet u as soon as u walk in. I've had the hot dogs in the past. They're ok. They also have good side salads with fresh veggies. Its a nice lil joint to go to for a quick inexpensive lunch. I'll definitely return as long as my fav cookies are there...

2 dogs with ketchup, mustard, and chili. One kielbasa with mustard.
Alanna R.

The food was served quickly and everything tasted pretty good. The chili could use more flavor in my opinion but it wasn't terrible. The kielbasa and the BLT were delicious. My kids enjoyed the nuggets (not pictured) and grilled cheese.

I ordered the Black and Blue burger with sweet potatoes waffle fried, and my son ordered a bacon cheeseburger with regular fries. I got my burger with a little pink, and it was cooked to perfection! Sometimes I am hesitant to get pink because it's been to raw. The burger was not only cooked to perfection, I really loved the bleu cheese sauce and grilled onions. The waffle fries with the cinnamon/brown sugar sauce were great as well. My son also really enjoyed his burger, but he did say his fries tasted like shrimp. I tasted them, and they didn't taste like shrimp but they did have a distinct taste. I can't really describe it, but I didn't like it. Otherwise we had a great visit, one of the best burgers I've had, and really good, quick service! I am sure we were in and out in under an hour with everything still being super fresh!

So when one of the Homies told me about this place I was all in because - burgers - what's not to love. Barrel 17 did not disappoint; when i got there i realized quickly i was the last to know because it was busy. We had about a 10 minute wait to be seated but that was cut short by option to sit at the bar. The bartender was working like she had six arms. It was non stop; attentive, taking orders, making drinks, checking back with others, she was truly impressive. The places was jumping; it was busy, casual and didn't slow down from the time we arrived until we left. Parking is challenging, there's a small lot beside the restaurant and a small lot behind it so if you can car pool you'll benefit yourselves. Now on to the star of the show - the food! The only knock I had was portion size. In a big guy with an even bigger appetite and when i left there i could've eaten my whole meal over again lol. But that's also because it was delicious. I got the mac n cheese starter, the Beast Burger, tater tots , and the biggest slice of chocolate cake I've ever had. Literally the biggest slice of cake ever- twice the size of my burger. If it wasn't for some derogative guy whining off the bell about how the service wasn't up to par every couple minutes I'd have enjoyed what would've been quite a depressing day for me. The last time I set foot inside their Pleasure House Rd location was at least 10 years ago. I celebrated my birthday there as my friends were kind enough to take me out. It was a Sunday morning and I sought out a place that offered brunch. I noticed 1608 was open and decided to head over, especially since I haven't visited them in ages. When I walked in, I noticed their dining room is dimly lit - much darker than I remember. I was greeted immediately by a kind hostess and she proceeded to sit me at a nearby table and provided me with menus (one food, one alcohol). I took my time looking over the food menu, and in the meantime I ordered a pint of Center of the Universe's Bald Irishman and a bottle of Boylan's Black Cherry soda (they do not have a soda fountain). What made this visit memorable was that 1608's bartender, Hunter, was an old acquaintance from back in my restaurant days. He spotted me and came over to say hi. After my meal, I continued to catch up with him at the bar. His presence made a pleasant experience even more fantastic. I thought I was hungry, so I ordered 2 dishes - Smoked Ham Fried Rice and the Breakfast Burrito. According to Hunter, every item is made fresh in house. After biting into each, you could tell that's true. Both the fried rice and burrito were delicious and boasted lots of flavor. Although I prefer my fried rice a bit simpler (if you give me just garlic fried rice, I am SET), 1608's fried rice (veggies, garlic, soy, basmati rice, 2 runny eggs, smoked ham) had a lot going on, which made for a flavorful dish. I liked the rice and the burrito (Korean style fried chicken breast, scrambled eggs, cilantro lime, cheddar, pico de gallo) a lot. I didn't finish either because it was a lot of food (I really thought I was hungry, haha). But these leftovers turned into a fantastic dinner later on. 1608 looked clean and organized, although I thought it was a little too dark inside, at least for brunch service. That's not a dealbreaker since everything from the food to the service was as excellent as I remember. I hope to return soon with my mom. Regardless, I'll find my way back eventually. Thank you, 1608 Crafthouse! And great seeing you again, Hunter! JV

Our first table ended up being under a spotlight that was directly in our line of sight (it looked like it was meant for the specials board), so we asked to move. Staff was accommodating and got us to a better table quickly. The space itself is really nice. It was clean, rustically decorated, and the live plants in liquor bottles on the tables are a nice touch. Our server was friendly from the start and took drink orders right away. My daughter and I had sodas, and my husband ordered the Southern Charm Old Fashioned off the specials menu, which he enjoyed. The menu is on the smaller side, which we actually like. One unique detail was the option to "buy a round for the kitchen," which we thought was a really nice touch and decided to add it when we ordered our appetizer. We started with the fried deviled eggs after a friend recommended them. They were creative with three styles (classic with pickle, togarashi ginger, and crispy prosciutto), but overall a bit on the dry side and not as flavorful as we expected. We asked for Dijon, but they don't have it. Our server suggested and brought out the Baja dipping sauce instead, which did pair well and kind of improved them. My husband had the fish and chips and really enjoyed it. He said the fish was flaky and well cooked. I ordered the Union grilled cheese, which unfortunately seemed like it had been sitting a bit before being served, as the bottom was soggy. It was just okay overall and not particularly memorable for the price. The sweet potato fries on the side were the clear standout. They were crispy, the perfect balance of sweet and salty and honestly the best part of the dish. Our daughter had the kid's smashburger. It was exactly that. Service throughout the meal was good. She was friendly, attentive without being overbearing, and there when needed. The main disappointment came at the end. When our meals were served, the server actually offered sauces at the table (ketchup, mayo, ranch, etc.), and specifically suggested items like the baja sauce for the eggs and ranch to us. Because of that, we were surprised to see several charges for the sauces on the bill, especially since they were offered and recommended at the table with no mention of any additional cost. We were also charged a credit card fee, with no signage anywhere (entrance, hostess stand, or menu) indicating that paying with a card would include an extra charge. It just left an unnecessary sour note on an otherwise solid, casual meal. Nothing was bad, and nothing really stood out as exceptional, but the lack of transparency around those final charges really impacted the overall experience for us.

One piece of advice: arrive a little before Happy Hour begins at 3:00 p.m. If you wait until then, you'll likely find yourself several people deep in line. Don't let that discourage you. Embrace it, because once you're seated you'll quickly discover that the wait was well worth it. The food is delicious, the portions are generous, and the prices--especially during Happy Hour--are outstanding. The Atlantic specializes in oysters, and their Happy Hour runs daily from 3:00-6:00 p.m., including weekends. We began with a Chopped Caesar Salad ($9). Every ingredient was crisp, fresh, and flavorful--a simple dish executed exactly as it should be. Next came the oysters: a dozen Rockefeller and a dozen Pacific. The Rockefeller oysters were everything you would expect from this classic preparation--rich, savory, and baked beautifully. The Pacific oysters, however, completely stole the show. Each oyster was topped with a delicious combination of chorizo sausage, pepper jack cheese, and seasonings before being baked to perfection. They were bold, flavorful, and easily my favorite item of the afternoon. I also ordered the Double Stack Cheeseburger ($7), and what a terrific value. The burger arrived piping hot, loaded with melted cheese, and accompanied by a generous serving of crispy fries. It's hard to imagine finding a better burger at that price anywhere along the Oceanfront. My wife ordered the pork, shrimp, and kimchi dumplings served with a chili crunch and ponzu sauce that tied the entire dish together beautifully. She jokingly threatened to drink the remaining sauce after finishing the dumplings (she didn't), but she did convince me to dip one of my fries into it. She was absolutely right--it was fantastic. In fact, I now regret turning down the dumpling she generously offered me. Part of the fun of dining here is watching Shuck-Master Slim work. He's not only remarkably skilled but entertaining as well, adding a little personality to an already enjoyable experience. From the fresh seafood to the outstanding value and friendly atmosphere, this was another memorable visit to the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. I've been told they aren't supposed to let you walk out with to go orders on their taco Tuesday, but if I pay for and eat some of my food who is this manager to say I can't leave with a to go box(which in most cases I have), but I digress. I tried to do it today and the manager comes to me with a nasty attitude over me not tipping enough for his standards telling me I can't take my food to go because he doesn't feel I tip enough and "what's a 5 dollar tip gonna do for him". Keep in mind I told him I'm not ordering food for just myself I sometimes take lunch orders from work which is never more than 5 to go small tacos. I've never been rude to this man I'm a quiet person so I usually order wait and leave. I work for a reputable company that sees a lot of tourism and I often recommended this spot to our guests but due to this situation I will be advising people to avoid this place if you're not just going to drink at the end of the night on The Weekend. In the specific event the owner of the restaurant was there and confirmed they weren't supposed to be doing to go tacos which I can respect. What I dont respect is the manager picking and choosing when he wants to follow the rules of the establishment for his own gain.
