Food was just OK. Definitely not worth 45+ dollars PLUS a tip for two burgers, fries, and a kid meal. We were charged for a "combo" fry instead of just a side of fries and we were only drinking water. So the burgers were $10 and then a "side of fries" was $5.99 EACH when the menu said $3.99. Unsanitary practices! Cashier used bare hands to grab frozen fries to put in freezer, then wiped his hands on his shorts, he then returned to the register to assist next customer. Young cook wearing non-food safe latex gloves that trap a-lot of sweat. grabbed hand full of hotdogs from water placed them on a dirty grill full of over cooked burnt blackened bacon and way over cooked onions. He then grabs onions, then grabs jalapeños, grab bread, touches other condiments, then wipes hands on napkins. Where are the tongs or serving utensils? Proceeds to repeat on next order and instead of changing gloves, he wipes with napkins. Cross contamination? Once I spoke up, he just stared and look confused. Willing to bet he was wearing the same glove all morning on other orders and only wiping with napkins and not changing out. Next cook took over after I spoke up, and after he started prepping food with tongs and serving utensils, after I informed him that there is old burnt food left on the grill and that was what he was ready to put on other customer food. He threw the old onions out, he started to throw the bacon out but switch up and pushed the left side of the grill instead. This indicates they don't clean the grill and or scrape off between orders. He then tells me he needs to clean off the station where they placed the cooked order at. I looked at it and sure enough there are cooked orders ready to hand out and it's dirty full of mustards onions and other things. So while cooking he steps away from the grill, goes to the back grab bucket of some sort of cleaning solution and wet rag, barely rung the rag out, wipes off the station where finished cooked hotdogs orders were sitting, tips over a hotdog while wiping (he was told to throw away) placed damped rag back and with the same wet dripping gloves grabs bread any other food items and continues to prep more food. Why are you wiping down a station with food on it? Instantly requested a refund before ever receiving my order. read more

This business has the absolute worse business model. They definitely don't care about repeat customers. We got charged 2 different prices for the Same meal! 2 weeks ago, we had this same meal - 2 hot dog combos - and were charged $18.78 NOT over $35. Such a ripoff! I asked the owner why and she said bc their fryers are down, they added side choices BUT they add $2-3 per those special items without letting us know we would get a $3 up charge bc we couldn't order French fries. WTF!?! Really? They have items listed on each table saying you can choose any side bc their fryer is broken but then you get the surprise price and ask for an explanation, the owner said basically "yeah, yeah we changed our prices and sorry we didn't let you know (or even LIST the prices) but here you go, you must pay our "temporary and MISLEADING pricing. Our server even admitted she was not aware of the up charge. The last time I came in here was two years ago. I used to come into this place all the time. It was my favorite place to eat lunch. It was always crowded. The place was busy the food was good and the service was awesome. I came in here for the first time in two years and I think there was only four people in here and most of them were workers. It was so loud because they had the music cranked up that it was uncomfortable. The service was still good, but the food has gone downhill too. The buns were very dry and the chili was just old. I don't know what happened to this place but I won't be back. And I understand why they barely have customers now. read more

My wife was having a Craving for a hot dog so we decided to go to Famous Uncle Al's. She definitely wanted a foot long hot dog. Little did we know that famous Uncle Al's has 4 locations in Hampton Roads, and they are not all associated with each other.  We initially went to the Uncle Al's on the boulevard however they did not have footlong hot dogs. So we turned around headed to the one (not part of franchise) at Kempsriver. That was probably the best choice to start off with, but we will call it a lesson learned. The staff was super friendly especially Heather when she explained to us about the different Uncle Al's in the area. My wife had a basic foot long hot dog. It was a special on Friday. She topped it with chili, cheese, onions, and mustard. It looked delicious however I was in the mood for something else. I went with thier version of the Chicago Dog. Speaking personally that was a great decision. The combination of ingredients will lead your taste buds In multiple directions. You had the snap of the hot dog and saltiness of the mustard, and pickle combined with the combination of the cooling cucumber and tomatoes. And you can't forget the heat from short pepper and sweetness from the relish. Seriously do I need to say more it was fabulous!!! The only thing that was lacking were the fries needed a little bit of salt but was on the bar for us to use at our will or choice.  Will I go back the better question is how soon will I be back. They serve many yummy handhelds and are known for their hotdogs, also serving different sausages, burgers (they have a vegan burger patty!), sandwiches like clubs and cheesesteaks, and wraps, along with salads, soups, sides, and desserts. Everything here is also very affordable. I've only been to this location, but here, you seat yourself, or place an order to-go at the counter. There is plenty of seating inside and outside, and the wall inside is lined really cute picture's of the workers' pets. Last time, my sister and I came and and we just split some cheesy fries and a salad, which were both really good. I love their melted cheddar. Their veggies are fresh and portions very generous (they were super nice in splitting our salad into two). But, today I was out and about on my own, and decided to stop in again for a full meal. I was greeted immediately, and sat myself at a cozy booth. My order was taken by a young man who was very helpful with explaining the menu and different options for menu items. I didn't feel rushed to order or like I was a bother. I ended up ordering the veggie burger with extra lettuce & onion, with mayo and coleslaw on the side. I also went with fries and a Dr. Pepper, and for dessert, their NY-style cheesecake with strawberry (you can get caramel, chocolate, or whipped cream too!) My food was brought out quickly and everything was accurate to my order. Their veggie burger is pretty good! The fries were crispy and hot. The coleslaw, I could tell is homemade, and upon asking my server, he confirmed it. He was also kind enough to offer to get me a Dr. Pepper in a to-go cup. I honestly don't remember much about the food because I was so captivated by the show. I wish I was exaggerating but I'm not. I've never seen anything like it. Good dogs with a nice snap to them! I chose the Reuben dog, which is something I've never had before. Grilled sauerkraut and corned beef on top of a hot dog? Yes, sure! It was pretty good! As well, I had it with a Chicago dog that wasn't perfectly traditional - the tomatoes were chopped and it had cucumber bits instead of a tomato wedge and green relish. I just move to the Virginia Beach area and I've been exploring a lot of different restaurants; today I had a craving for hotdogs and Famous Uncle Al's was suggested to me by a friend. A few of the things that stand out are the service and the establishment itself. With it being my first time I found that the cashier was extremely helpful in helping me make decisions, the establishment itself was clean, and they had good music plying which gave an overall comforting feel to the experience. They also serve beer so that's always a good thing! Overall though, I found the hot dogs to be a little bit disappointing. I ordered a New York hot sausage with just mustard, a quarter-pound all-beef dog with chili cheese and onions, and a famous dog with chili cheese and onions (combo came with fries and a drink). The New York hot sausage was a little bit dry, and unfortunately the chili on my dogs was a little bit greasy and caused my buns to get soggy. The famous dog had a good snap to it, but the all-beef dog was rather dry as well. If I came back to this restaurant, I would skip on the hot dogs and try some of the burgers... besides that I'm going to just continue my search for the best hotdog in the Virginia Beach area. read more

Decided to stop by here randomly as we were in the area doing some errands. Apparently, they are famous for their hot dogs. We wanted a small ish meal as we weren't terribly so why not? Let's see how famous they really are. The inside is a standard diner and hot dog grill area with tables as well. It wasn't busy so we were seated right away. We ordered the famous Uncle Al's hot dog combo and fries and a drink and claimed a free drink from the Yelp check in offer. Each hot dog come with free toppings such as slaw, chili, relish etc. The hot dogs and fries came out fairly quick as well. The hot dogs were good but nothing extraordinary and the fries were a little over cooked. Still had a good experience here. Next time we come here, I would like to try one of their specialty dogs. Ok I'm giving the extra half star for being a locally owned small business. As others have observed, the highlight of this place is the wonderful customer service. Even when at their apparent peak volume and busyness, the small staff has a smile on their faces as they sprint from table to table. The slow spot is at the grill but if you want a burger etc in a minute, you should probably go down the street to the mass production venues like BK (gag), These aren't gourmet burgers and dogs but in my humble opinion, they're worth the wait for fresh prepared. By way of suggestion, Uncle Al could benefit by ditching the Oreta style bags of frozen fries and going for some fresh cut. Prepped in advance, they don't take any longer to cook up and for anyone that has had the In-N-Out burger experience, well I dare say the effort would really punctuate Uncle Al's menu. Lastly like all local business, there is a certain quaintness with this place, The little decorative pieces or the old fashioned bent nail puzzles and peg games made a lunch sitting at the bar a delight for dad and the boys. read more

I grew up in the Kempsville area and saw this Famous Uncle Al's change ownership many times. When it first opened it was great and remained great for many years. After being sold time and time again, the quality and consistency began to fall. I'm happy to see the new owners doing well. The place is clean again and the menu is creative and fun. In addition to some creative specialty burgers and dogs, this location also features a pretty good list of sandwiches, soups and salads. The desserts are homemade and I recommend the chocolate cake when it's available. I've had the Breakfast Burger many times and it's always been great. My favorite sandwich is the Chicken Philly or the Turkey Melt. Best of luck to this location - it's the best of the Famous Uncle Al's in the area. Highly recommended! read more

So after my old go to hot dog spot closed I have been out and about looking for a new spot. The first place I wanted to try is no longer open on the weekend so I went here instead. The place is clean and the staff are friendly. I went with a burger and a dog just so I know if there is any point in a return visit. Even though it was busy food came out pretty fast. The burger was kind of dry for my taste and I think it could have used a little seasoning. The hot dog was ok, but just not what I was looking for. I guess the hunt will continue.
