Convenient location as you exit the BART station. Wayne is a lively chat, sports a kickin' fedora with a feather, and gives a good shoe shine (the other feather in his cap). Of note: Wayne now sells a lifetime shoe shine card, which I plan to buy when my 25-shine card is fully used up. After my first couple shines I thought Wayne was a few fries short of a Happy Meal, what with his lively banter sounding kind of like what you'd expect from someone working 8 hours a day in a sea of shoe polish and leather cleaner (I myself would get pretty loopy doing the same). Eventually though, I realized the guy was working outside, talking to his friends (and just about everyone else), working for himself, wearing a zoot suit (!) and a hat fit for a pimp, and managing to make a decent living at it. I now fully recognize Wayne's genius. And yeah, he and his guys know how to shine shoes. While he is a hustler of sorts, he won't rip you off, he's more interested in making sure you show up consistently to his place, which he does an expert job of. Belligerent and rude. I asked him a couple of questions about my shoes and he started to insult and hound me. Like an idiot I sat down for a shine, but after he kept it up I got up and left, and then he continued yelling at me after I left. About a week ago, Famous Wayne noticed that the shine on my shoes had faded and I needed to sit my ass down on the chair and get the mirror shine back. Who was I to argue? If you're looking to shine your own shoes, go see Wayne. He uses genuine Lincoln Stain Wax shoe polish on your shoes. Lincoln is the best stuff. It produces a nice shine and doesn't crack or ruin the leather in sunlight like KIWI does. Wayne's 25-shine card is great and if you have the dough to buy one upfront, go for it. Seriously how can you go wrong with Famous Wayne's Shoe Shine? You can't, that's how. This guy has to be the shoe shine PIMP. The always dapper and talkative Famous Wayne chats your ear off as he or one of his assistants shines your shoes to perfect brilliance. As you sit up high on the five person shoe stand you can't help but notice people looking at you, especially the occasional tourist whom as if by some demented cultural misunderstanding, looks at you as if your royalty up on your throne. So don't be surprised if you end up in the occasional picture or two. If you work anywhere near the end of Market St near Embarcadero I recommend going here. Also, buy the 25 shoe shines card for $50, which ends up being way cheaper than the full price of shine, even if you factor a good tip in. SHINE: The shoe shine was 4/5, felt a little rushed and they missed the back of the shoes, but overall pretty good for lunch rush. SERVICE: The missing star was for the unnecessary hustling. I sat down with a friend who has the lifetime membership card, and as soon as we sat, Wayne was trying to push the 50 shines for 60 on me, then dropping the price to 30, etc. They had barely started doing the shine before giving me the hustle. I've passed up this fedora-wearing shoe-pimp on Market St. for over a decade. One day, when I finally decided my shoes needed help, he was the first guy that popped in my head. There's something very San Franciscan about getting a shoe shine from Wayne. I sat down and we shot the shit. Giants fans decked out in orange and black were walking to the big game. Passers-by kept taking our picture for some reason. We talked about baseball, cops, and local celebrities. Wayne kept working his 25 Shine and Lifetime Shine cards into the conversation. After all that, I looked at my shoes and said "Dayam!" He made them shinier than when they were new. I agreed to the $50 25 Shine card, but I got it for significantly less. I will be back. Wayne is a favorite personality on "Market at the Foot of California" and will cut deals, pushing the cash up front approach. His deals are great, $50 for 25 shines (will cost you closer to $100 after tips), and a $300 Lifetime Shine Membership that is negotiable. I recently bought in on the Lifetime Shine Membership as two friends and I were getting our shoes shined on a Tuesday after lunch. I will not devulge how much we paid as a group, but it was not $300 and we all receive Lifetime Cards. He is the kind of guy who defines San Francisco, but I am glad he makes Oakland his home. I have been coming to see Famous Wayne for years. For the last couple of years I have been working away from the Financial District, so I get to see Wayne less often. He's been around for probably ever; Something like $7 or $8 shines, but much more importantly if you work downtown, his membership card is an outstanding value -- $40 or $50 for 25 shines (plus tips, of course).
