My halmoni has lost a lot of weight recently (she's 87 and shrinking rapidly), and my mom wanted to buy her some clothes at what she described as a Korean-style shijang by the Koreatown Plaza. I decided I wanted to see this, and blew off work for another hour to witness their spree. Western Baekhwajum was as described--a shopping mall made up of a maze of individual stalls, with clothes and accessories hung up high to entice a sparse crowd of exclusively Korean-from-Korea shoppers. The wares were definitely meant for ajummas and halmonis, bright colors and loose silhouettes, no identifiable overlap with current fashion trends. There was plenty for my halmoni, though, and I thought some of the things she got looked quite becoming on her. We ended up shopping at one stall with lots of good, comfortable clothes that she liked, and the ajumma running it was helpful and amiably pushy in that boisterous, hustling shijang vendor way--fishing out must-try finds, assuring us that her prices were good. I got the sense that the clothes were significantly more expensive than they would have been in Korea, but hey, they had to travel a long way to recreate Namdaemun Shijang in Koreatown. I'd recommend Western Baekhwajum for shopping with your halmoni. It's not like anywhere else you've shopped in L.A.

There are also random specialty shops selling: underwear, hats/hair clips/accessories, makeup, flowers, a little market, watches/watch repair, and shoes. There's also an alteration lady who has pretty reasonable rates. I wouldn't say this is a "hip" place to go. I have made an occasional find here, though. Parking is pretty easy. They have a private lot in the front and in the back; I've never had trouble finding a spot.
