Staff were friendly and attentive at first. Then it seemed to slow. All good. We got the lamb which was really good. I got the Oso Buco which was completely flavorless. That's really the only reason I'm giving 3 stars instead of 4-5. The meat was tender but no flavor and it was served over penne pasta with hardly any sauce on it from the oso buco. It was the first time I can remember salting my meal at a restaurant. Out of respect for the chefs I never add salt to a good meal. Would I go back? Came here for my wedding anniversary and had a great night. They had a tiny "anniversary room" that looks like it was once a meat cellar. Everyone was celebrating in there, which was a neat touch, it was just quite cramped. They started us off with a bread basket which was lackluster - the bread was cold and a bit stale. The butter they served it with was cold and in tiny wrapped packets, so it was near impossible to spread over the bread. I was disappointed that there was not better quality and presentation of the butter, especially at a French restaurant. For the mains, we had French onion soup with salad and the short ribs. The soup was delicious as were the short ribs, the meat was incredibly tender and the mashed potatoes were perfect - cheesy, buttery, and creamy. The potatoes, carrots, and meats all worked together wonderfully, I would highly recommend the short ribs. The salad was okay - it was very dressing heavy. For dessert we were given profiteroles on the house and also ordered creme brûlée. The profiteroles were good but the creme brûlée was delicious and absolutely perfectly done. Our server was polite and attentive, but at the end of the night when it came time for the check, he started walking over towards me and I thanked him - but he noticed my husband wasn't at the table and he left the check on an empty table instead of giving it to me. He came back a few minutes later and gave the check very clearly to my husband. I found this a little annoying and sexist, as he had no way of knowing who would be paying for the meal or if we'd be splitting it. read more

I've been here about 8 times now both just with my hubby and a few times with my dad and his friend. Every time is fantastic! I wish there were more vegetarian options but still will continue to come here. Bread was really really good. We had 3 baskets. Wish they softened the butter though. Appetizers: Fandango soup was just ok. Tomato base with white beans. I'd pass on this. We ordered the calamari as an appetizer thinking it'll be the deep fried calamari rings but instead it was a calamari steak. It was tender but had a nice chewy texture and very filling. Still wish it was rings though. Escargot was tender and buttery. Main: Scallops on pasta. By this time my bf and I were already pretty full. The pasta was bland and was on the softer side. Scallops were fresh, buttery and tender. I did bite into some hard pieces in the scallop and I wasn't sure what it was. Perhaps a shell? That was a downer. The beans that came with it were limp and tasteless. Dessert: Soufflé was airy and light. The base of the soufflé had alcohol so beware if you're not a fan/giving to kids. read more

Down in Monterey for a wedding, really wanted French Onion Soup so I dragged my date here on a Saturday afternoon. Picked up a reservation on Open Table and was seated immediately upon arriving. Restaurant was small and quaint and I honestly felt bad I was slightly underdressed but everyone was very nice. The whole place was decorated with tons of flowers and it was really cozy feeling. We were served bread (which yum) with perfectly temperatured butter. Placed an order of the bowl of French Onion but I don't think the waiter heard me correctly and only put in the cup :( The broth was super flavorful without overly salty with a perfect layer of melty cheese. I think I would have just been content with that. My friend got the Calamari sandwich which we thought was super unique and I got the papperdelle. It was took much food for a Saturday afternoon but it was all so good. Price was reasonable (then again I'm used to SF prices) - would definitely come back for date night. read more

Menu has a lot of options, and food was overall average. It was good, but not stand out. Perhaps that has more to do with the service experience. Service was definitely lacking. We ordered the rack of lamb, and considering the price felt that it was poorly prepared. We ordered medium and it was clearly rare - red and raw in the center. The waiter agreed it was rare and asked us to provide just the meat pieces, which we had already cut, on a small plate for them to take back to the kitchen. Left us with a sad plate of sides and bones. They cooked it some more and brought it back to roll off onto the original plate with its sides. If they think this is acceptable service for a poorly cooked dish to order, then it's definitely not a place to visit. read more

Still confused about the service at this restaurant. My wife and I came for a weekday dinner after relaxing day at the refuge. As we were driving over I was on the restaurants website and saw many reservation openings so I wasn't concerned about seating. Upon arrival I asked for a table for 2 and a Hispanic male in a black suit who apparently was the manager that night told us "sorry we're sold out for the evening, if you want to sit at a bar area we can see if a reservation doesn't show up". Since we had already driven over we decided to wait in the most uncomfortable bar chairs possible, which was not a bar more like a walkway area. While waiting I made a reservation online for an opening that was in 7 minutes. I go back up to the front and inform the waiter that I made a reservation and he mumbled a bunch of words, no idea what he said but he told me to go back to the bar and my table will be ready soon. We waiting for 20 minutes and were finally seated while many others were coming in and getting seated before us. After that, the service was great. The food, wine, and dessert was all delicious. We would come back again I'm just really confused as why we were told it's "sold out", I've never been told that before from a restaurant. This restaurant was so quaint and adorable. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The food was phenomenal. We started off with escargot. It was our first time trying this dish and wow it was amazing! I also had a cup of French onion soup without the bread (because I have celiac disease). For dinner my husband had the filet and scampi which he says was really good. I had the fresh scallops with veggies because I could not eat the pasta that comes with the meal. The scallops were cooked perfectly They literally melt in your mouth. The staff were very accommodating to my gluten allergy. We had coffee after dinner which was very delightful. Lastly we got desserts to go. We ate them later. We forgot to take pictures haha. I had the chocolate mousse which was fluffy and creamy. My husband had the raspberry cheesecake and he loved it. I really wanted to love this place because the service was superb and the food was good but the portions were so small compared to the steep prices. If it wasn't for the wonderful service, I think I would've given rated this place 3 stars. The salad was around 10-12$ and it was such a sad salad. A few spinach leaves with crumbles of bacon and hard boiled eggs. Like come on, that's pretty stingy. My boyfriend got the double lamb chops for 40$ surprisingly really small. He was definitely still really hungry after dinner. Steak frites were good but it wasn't a 30$ meal. The ambiance, the service, the food...it's a delightful experience for the senses. My wife and I enjoyed yet another wonderful meal here last night, recreating moments at the fireside table, as they are lovingly portrayed in a scene in my novel, which takes place in Pacific Grove. I had the "surf and turf," filet mignon and 2 mini lobsters. My husband had the New York steak. Both were accompanied by scalloped potatoes and beans. Everything was perfectly cooked and delicious. The lobster dipped in butter was to die for. We had sanddabs for an appetizer. I had never had sanddabs before and they were delicious, a white fish that wasn't as firm or meaty as halibut but not as light and thin as sole. A very enjoyable mouthful. The restaurant was highly rated BUT the bathrooms are rank, sewage smell it's disgusting as it wafts thru the dining area. The waiter was constantly up selling, our credit card was overcharged and the "mistake" rectified only after a lot of protest but overpriced bland food with a sewage smell left us all feeling queasy and vaguely sick. Just terrible ! Update : Fandango send me a PM and said the smell has been there for weeks and they've told the City BUT they continue to serve food next to what smells like an open sewer. Not the typical "fine dining" where you don't get hardly anything. The shining jewel in the crown was Carlos, our waiter. Great personality, very knowledgeable on both the menu and wine pairings (my girlfriend said so - I don't understand all that boujee bulls*** but it made her happy) and just had a great attitude. Went as an early birthday celebration on Saturday night and everything exceeded my expectations! The service was impeccable. They truly have an excellent wine list! I had the salmon pappardelle and hubby had the spaghetti . They were both delicious ! The soufflé is a must and make sure to pair it with a port. Was there in January and experience was mediocre. As a local I've dined here many times before and have noticed a decline. French Onion soup was not piping hot-pretty much just warm. The Gran Marnier Soufflé was awful. Tasted like egg whites and NO taste of Gran Marnier-very disappointing. However, the Sand Dabs were delicious and the bottle of Rombauer wine was the best. Service was pleasant and ambiance was moderate noisy, but we had a nice table by the window that we enjoyed. May be a while before I come back as this place is on the expensive side-good for the occasional special occasions and celebrations. read more

We had seafood paella, a burger (the 6 year old's order and I was (1) jealous and (2) happy to help), sand dabs, proscuitto and melon, a tapas plate, more Kalamata olives than we should have - and their hearts of palm salad which I've always loved. The women who I talked to asked the kitchen and they told her yes. When we got there they said they don't have it any more and hadn't had it was a long time. Ok, so I ordered the sand dabs sauce on the side. They were so soggy and overcooked. When they came to take my plate they asked how it was and I said not good. I took the coating off the sand dabs and ate some of the inside. Anyway we will not be returning to this restaurant. We have eaten here quite a few times. read more
