This was my first time at Fantastic Sams. I normally don't leave Yelp reviews but I felt like I needed to for this. I had long hair with long layers when I came into the salon. I had my hair cut by Brenda, and I really wish someone else attended to me. I asked for 3 inches off and to freshen my layers. Although she listened to the length I wanted off, she butchered my layers. They are so choppy and are way too short! When my hair was wet, I kept seeing the chunks and chunks of hair she cut off. Since I think you need to pay extra to have your hair blow dried, she washed and cut my hair in 15 minutes, and sent me on my way. After letting my hair dry, I was mortified.. I still am. I'm not sure if trust going back to get it fixed. But I guess that's the quality of a $17 cut. Literally a cut. read more

The stylist treated my hair so roughly that I have observed a thin spot at the top of my hairline. I evaluated this over the last couple days to be sure it wasn't in my head. There is definitely a thin spot that wasn't there before the haircut. She scrubbed my hair like it was a rough stain in a pot. I was too stunned to say anything to her initially when she had done this, but I gently suggested that she go easy while combing my hair. Surely anyone with basic training would know not to do that to people's scalps? There was no line, but she rushed through the entire thing and didn't even ask me where I wanted my hair parted before she started cutting. Luckily I had only asked for a trim which is difficult to screw up. While she was applying product to my hair, she confirmed she would not put it on my roots just before she scrubbed it harshly onto my scalp. This was a terrible experience and people deserve to take their business elsewhere, where people treat hair with some respect. read more

Probably the worst haircut experience I've ever had. I brought in a few photos but didn't know exactly what I wanted. I was expecting the "professionals" to talk about options and make recommendations based on their experience. They were busy and I felt like he wasn't listening so that he could get me out of the chair as quick as possible. The man cutting my hair had no recommendations and called across the salon to another stylist (the owners daughter apparently) for recommendations. She said "she needs to know what she wants" and the entire salon heard. I was so embarrassed that I paid for my crappy haircut and left. Do not go to this place if you are expecting any kind of positive experience. *Revision - within 30 minutes of posting the review I was contacted by the owner of the salon. She was not the previously mentioned person, that was their manager. She apologized profusely, explained why her staff wouldn't make recommendations, and offered a refund and recut. I won't be returning, but I do appreciate that she reached out and offered a sincere apology. read more

Hmm well my first negative review about this hair salon was deleted. Anyway in my opinion this is a mediocre hair salon do not come here expecting a good hair stylist. You get what you get. They have a very high turnover rate and I notice that when I find a stylist I like they are gone within a month. Last time I came in for a haircut I received terrible service by a lady named Stacey. She was very rude and did not seem to know how to cut hair in my opinion. She gave me a bad haircut and I eventually just told her to stop cutting because it would be better if I fixed it at home myself. This was over a month ago and I am resubmitting my review because the experience was that bad (yes I know get a life). I paid 75$ today and asked the lady to just give me a trim (my hair was to my shoulders) and to color it. I asked her to have fun with the cut and make it cute but not to take off any length just to add layers. She ended up giving me a Mullet and waking off chunks of my hair leaving only a few strands long and the rest chopped off at my ears. I went to a professional after and they said my hair wasn't completely salvageable and now I'm stuck with a messed up pixie cut. Absolutely will not be returning and will be telling all my friends. The 1/5 stars is for how nice people were. I went in to Fantastic Sams on Rural Rd. looking for a balayage. Maurice was my stylist and he felt that he should do an Ombré when I showed him an exact picture I wanted of a dark brown-light brown mix balayage. He seemed very confident but neglected to tell me that he had no experience with this kind of hair color and continued anyway. He styled my hair with curls and hid the discolorations and errors. When I got home I saw random orange and blonde spots in my hair, along with completely straight horizontal lines of color and he did NOT use toner, as per HIS OWN preference, which was absurd because I was super orange. He did NOT blend anything together. I returned to try fix it but my hair only became worse and more damaged. The only nice thing I received was my full refund. Sorry, but I'm never going back to this Fantastic Sams location. The manager was extremely rude when giving me my refund like it was my fault. This salon should never have let an inexperienced employee experiment on a paying customers healthy hair. read more

I have Been going to this location for few years. I always go to the same person Fannie. Before Fantastic Sams offered appointments I would wait just so I can have Fannie do my hair. When I found out could make a appointment I was very excited. Well it hasn't worked out that way. Today was the final straw. I had to wait 45 minutes when I had a appointment. No acknowledgement from Fannie I am sorry I am running behind. Nothing at all. Finally when she was ready for me I said does it matter if you make a appointment she said no it doesn't matter. I have been going for to this salon exclusively for about 18(I think) years. Janette cut my hair for the first 13. She moved to Minnesota, but before she left she made sure she matched me with a stylist who would give me the same quality service and Chanel has been cutting my hair since then. Prices are good, the stylists are all friendly and know their craft, the service is is great, the place is clean and comfortable, and I will continue going there. My one and only complaint (thus the 4 stars I stead of 5) is that they don't take appointments. You can request a stylist, but it's first-come-first-serve. read more

I found a coupon for Sam's and happened upon one of the best stylists I've ever met. Maurice listened to my concerns about my hair. I have been here twice and have had great experiences both times. I have long hair that all I ever do to it is trim and freshen up the layers. I was tired of paying $50+ dollars for something that I assume is a pretty easy cut. I LOVE my hair and was scared to try a "cheaper" option. I'm so glad I did. Yesterday I had David cut my hair who was friendly and funny, and took great care of me. It's not a fancy establishment, but when you pay $15.99 for a wash and cut, who needs the bells and whistles when you walk out feeling like you have your cute, healthy hair back? I plan to regularly return here for my haircuts, and my wallet loves that it has an extra few bills in it with the same results as the fancy places :-) read more

I've been a customer of this salon for many years. I used to see an outside individual who destroyed my hair and wouldn't take the time to fix it, ending me up here where I have stayed. My two main hair stylists were Michelle and Carl, whom both no longer work there, leaving me to start over with someone new (which is not something I like to do because I'm SUPER picky about my hair and color)...BUT...they paired me up with Sarah a few years ago, whom I've been going to ever since and absolutely love her! She does an amazing job and always is super friendly! I go into the chair and she works her magic because she knows what I like and don't like which makes my visit a happy, positive one. My mom goes to this same salon and sees Debbie, whom I also have seen and love (she's my backup if Sarah isn't available), and she's amazing as well, but gets super booked quickly. It's always been a friendly, positive atmosphere every visit I've had. And they now make appointments which is much more convienent! read more

I have been going to this location for over 5 years, I was happy with the previous manager and staff, but this new management and staff apparently doesn't know what are they doing o the top of that they took way too long for a simple hair cut and my length is not long, shouldn't take that long, the worst thing is a lady start cutting my hair and her hands started shaking, you are cutting hair, not answering phone calls. As it must be the custom at F Sams that the person who comes out of the back to cut your hair doesn't introduce herself and tell you her name. After bad results at another F Sams I had tried this Tempe location once before. Stylist who didn't provide her name nor talk to me was OK and did a "OK" job. Today, I thought as I have an important meeting in the morning I would get my hair trimmed. I had the same experience so I don't know the California girls name who ruined my hair. It was simple and I took the time to explain to her that I wear my hair straight back and all I needed was the hair trimmed off the top of my ears and thinned out on the sides and back of my head.I REPEATED i NEED TO BE ABLE TO COMB MY HAIR BACK AND IT NEEDS TO LAY DOWN. I was asked what number trimmer had been used on my sides before. Not sure as I don't recall ever asking or ever being told but it could have been a 3. Within less than five minutes she was done. I put my glasses on and looked in the mirror to see I now had a slightly long and uneven flat top! I Iasked her if I would be able to comb it back and she assured me it would lay down. I paid and tipped and left. I have applied everything I have and there is no way any of my hair is going to stay down. It also is amazing how uneven and the length of the hair is so uneven. I decided to give this place, Fantastic Sams at Rural and Guadalupe, a shot in order to get a men's business style haircut. This was the worst haircut I ever had in all my life. The girl's name, I won't say stylist because she is no stylist, was Valerie and she was awful from start to finish. The first tip-off should have been the hands full of hair all over the chair after she lifted the smock which was left behind from someone's previous cut. She looked at me and I pointed to the chair. She grabbed the nearest blowdryer, blew the hair all over the floor and said, "There." The next tip-off should have been that she didn't even know the length of an inch. I held up my fingers and said to cut about 3/4 to 1 inch off the top. She insisted that was 2 inches and became irritated when I held up my fingers and said again about 3/4 to 1 inch. I stated that I know my measurements, I'm an engineer. By the way, for over 20 years so I do know measurements very well. She was more miserable from there on. Her next words were "Put your head down!"..."Further!", so she could start with the back. You may think...Where, the back?...Really. I suppose this was her way of making me submissive. Next she then went and buzzed my right sideburn without even asking how or to where. I rolled my eyes then sat and watched how she cut much of my hair crooked. At one point I had to tell her to blend the top with the sides. She nudged my head down again so she could work on the back again and then she went to the left sideburn. I was in a bit of a hurry, had pretty much all I could take of her and thought I will never come back here again. Her Arizona state license is right in front of me so I'll just write an honest review on Yelp to tell of the appalling service by Michelle C., I'll explain the name difference below. I paid and left her a small tip...simply out of politeness...and figuring that karma would come back to bit her on her rear end. After this entire experience I decided that I will never tip again anywhere if is not deserved as this was an overdue lesson for me. I arrived home, took a quick shower and looked in the mirror in horror. My sideburns were about 1 inch difference and chucks of hair were missing on the sides. I then realized in my haste to get out of the place and away from her that she, besides buzzing my sideburns, never showed be the back and didn't ask how it looked when she finished hacking my hair; she simple rushed me to the register to have another woman to take my money. After getting a good look I decided to call and talk with the manager, Debbie, to tell her how bad the cut was and I'd be back for a refund in about 15-20 minutes. I couldn't stand the thought of Valerie getting away with this and me paying any amount for this spiteful hack job. On my arrival back to the shop I was greeted by another woman. I asked for Debbie and told the woman why I was there. The woman very nicely stated that Debbie was too busy and Debbie could not walk over to speak with me; that she would give me a refund. My thought..."The manager's too busy to handle a problem? Seriously?" I told the woman of my experience and she saw the cut. She looked shocked and offered to fix it but I refused by stating I prefer to go elsewhere. At that time, I was told the girl that cut my hair was named Valerie, not Michele C. whose license was displayed at the station where I was seated. That Michele is actually one of their best stylists. The woman behind the counter and I were both glad that I said the name Michelle because had I not...then I would never had known the real culprit's name was Valerie. Regarding the location of the license, my guess is that this may be a license violation and I will also be filing a complaint with the Arizona Board of Cosmetology. Let the manager deal with them. This person, Valerie, and the manager, Debbie, should both be ashamed of this service and treatment. No manager should ignore a customer's complaint as she did and refuse to come to the counter when she was clearly not in the middle of coloring or some other challenging service. I've had good haircuts and bad haircuts over the years but never like this. I've paid as little as $10 up to $50 for a men's haircut and it all depends on the stylist as to how well it turns out. If you're going to consider Fantastic Sam's, I suggest you reconsider and go elsewhere in the same price range. It's not worth the time or trouble and the management certainly does not care about the service or customers. read more

DO NOT LET THESE RUDE PEOPLE TOUCH YOUR HAIR!!!! I went in to get my hair dyed I brought in a picture of what I wanted and it turned out nothing like the picture. I wasn't sure whether I liked it or not because it was a big change and so I decided to sleep on it to decide, plus I was exhausted from sitting there 5 hours with an empty stomach and my husband needed me to get home. I had just gotten my tax returns and had already decided that I was going to pay it forward by giving a very large tip. When I told the stylist it needed to be fixed she told me her manager was going to make me pay for it. I decided to go in with a friend as an advocate as I am not any good with confrontation and I was greeted by the manager who was super abrasive from the beginning. Every time my friend would ask her something she would say I'm talking to her not you. She said she would fix it, but she was so rude that I was too uncomfortable to be around her let alone have her do my hair. I asked for my money back (not the tip) and she said she couldn't do that, so I asked to speak to the owner. The owner was super abrasive as well and told me my tip was too large so I was lying about not liking my hair. After trying to explain to him what happened he wasn't going to budge. I let him know I would let everyone know not to go to any of his stores. Then he replied with "I don't care go ahead. Get out of my store." I was dumbfounded by how I was treated by him and his store manager. I will never go back again & I will make sure to tell everyone not to go there as well. So much for good ol' customer service. I have been going to FS for years and when my long time stylist left, I panicked. Here I was, starting all over again trying to find someone new. In a pinch one day, needing to get my hair done ASAP, I was told Brenda was available. I had not seen her at the salon before, so I figured she was relatively new. I went there on Tuesday to cut and donate my hair. When it dried when I was at home, the underneath had started to curl while the outside longer layers were straight, so my hair just looked really poofy. I went back on Thursday to get layers to fix that problem and side bangs, and they didn't charge me anything extra. I got a great haircut and I will probably go there again. read more

I wish I could assign No Stars! This place is awful! I've been here twice for a haircut and learned my lesson! The first haircut was mediocre at best but I guess I shouldn't have expected much for a $10 haircut. The second time was absolutely horrifying! First the stylist insisted on telling me how unhealthy my hair is (other stylists have always commented on how healthy it is) She then becomes over dramatic at trying to 'untangle my unhealthy hair' and called the ends cotton. I've never had an issue with any other salon combing my hair nor have I ever been told it was unhealthy. Now comes the time for this crazy lady to chop my hair, literally. She cut the most uneven, choppy 'layers' ever! I didn't notice until I was home and finally able to dry it (they wanted $25 extra just to dry my hair! Ridiculous!!!!!). NEVER trust a place that charges extra to dry your hair. You should be able to see your final results on dried hair BEFORE leaving a salon. This place is crap!!! All I wanted was a trim. I will never go back. I can trim my hair much better than these so called professionals. read more

The whole entire experience for me yesterday was a train wreck. The staff seemed to not know what the hell they were doing. The power went out twice. I thought I was going in for a service that could not be messed up. I needed my roots touched up. I'm naturally a brunette but I have been bleaching my hair blonde for years. I have gone to several other Fantastic Sam's locations and I have never had any issues. The stylists have always been able to do all over bleach without any issue. Yesterday, when I went in my stylist had me all covered in a lightening product other than bleach before she even advised of what she was doing. If I had known they weren't allowed to do all over bleach I would have never even sat down in her chair. Then everyone knows that hair coloring works better under a dryer, always. But my stylist apparently didn't feel like using a dryer with me. So instead, I sat with the shit in my hair for two hours without being check on, offered a magizine, or a water. Nothing, just awful customer care. Then I honestly was tired of being there. I could tell my stylist had given up. So I just gave the suggestion of using a good toner, which every othe stylist l've ever had, has done. Prior to now that trick has always worked. My hair still managed to be orange when I left. Not only had I just been totally done with the place by the time I left. I also felt ganged up on by the staff. My stylist basically accused it of being my fault that their hair products did not work. And two otger stylist came over to basically say the same thing to me. No no no. I have gotten my hair to platinum blonde with no trouble in the past at other FS locations with no trouble at all. Sufficed to say the only reason why I would go back to that salon is for a refund. I've been to this place twice, but due to my last haircut I won't be returning. My first haircut here was actually nice and I left the salon happy. Unfortunately, I was not prepared for my second visit and the surprise I had when I was home. I don't remember my stylist's name because she wasn't very friendly. She kept asking a bunch of questions and made me feel uncomfortable like I'm doing the worst job at treating my hair when her hair literally looked awful. I should've judged my experience with her based off of her hair alone and knew what I was getting myself into. I just wanted a trim and told her I like my length. She cut my hair and then talked about how my hair is super thin. She asked if she could frame my face to make my hair look thicker. Any idea to make me look like I have more hair I'm thrilled. So I said sure. Big mistake. I didn't notice anything was wrong before I left because I left with a wet head. I then just threw my hair up in a bun and called it a day. I was just getting a trim after all. The next morning I showered and blow dried my hair and found chunks of my hair just missing. ESPECIALLY AROUND MY FACE. It was the most uneven, choppy hair cut I've ever had. I was so upset. I did go back in and the manager fixed the damage and my hair does feel healthy now, but it's wayyyy shorter than I want it to be. Unfortunately I spend my mornings now trying to style it, then hating it and then giving up and throwing it in a bun. I think it's ugly and am just dying for it to grow back. None of this would have happened if this stylist really knew what she was doing....Guess it's luck of the draw here. But never with me again. read more
