This salon is beautiful! A perfect blend of modern and vintage. The staff were uniquely themselves . I seen styles being created that gave me a few ideas for when I'm feeling a need for a change . This salons service was top tier, everyone was so friendly . They have refreshments for their guest coffee, tea , sodas and water . The salon caters to women and men. I had the pleasure working with Andrea as my stylist. We spoke about the options I had to fix my hair and she knocked my expectations out of the ballpark! Melissa was great! She took the time to listen to my concerns before starting my cut and really took care to see how I liked my hair each step of the way. For reference, I have fine, long curly hair. It can difficult to find a stylist who understands curly hair and how to cut and shape it best. She did a great job and took care with my hair. The salon itself is really beautiful. It's a nice space with great lighting and a lot of happy customers. Prices are also very fair and listed on the website. For my curly girls, I recommend this salon! Specifically Melissa! I asked her to leave it long enough to put up and I can't do that. It just looks ugly to me it's all one length like a Bob. I explained what I wanted clearly before the cut and even showed a photo for reference, but Melissa didn't listen to me at all. I only asked for a trim, yet she took off way too much and didn't follow the style I showed. It felt like my requests were completely ignored. It's really disappointing to walk out with a cut that looks nothing like what you asked for. With having finer hair, it's always scary to try and communicate that you want layers, without sacrificing thinning out your hair too much. Holly made my hair more full and showed me how to style it. My last appointment cost me $400 without tip. My hair s about 18inch long I did one all over color and a trim. I will not be returning. When I was paying the other employee widened her eyes and just stared at Terri when she told me it was gonna be $400. I felt robbed. I of course asked so many other hair stylist if that's normal and they are appalled. I get your hair cuts start at a base price and go up from there but never in my life did I expect that especially with an estimate of $150+ additional bowls. I do not have thick hair just long. No bleaching, just one all over black color. At the end of the trim she was also doing like one cut per minute. It looked like she was stalling and she even had an alarm on. First off, what an incredible salon! Altered Ego is SO beautiful, unique and eclectic - a perfect fusion of modern and vintage, with a diverse, friendly and talented staff. A perfect place to spend a few hours & come out looking fabulous. The vibes are real. Second, I have been THROUGH it with my hair (years of legit trauma after losing my lengths due to an over ambitious "blonde specialist" .. never having been able to fully recover, and then AGAIN being over-processed and losing my progress). I had begun to accept that I would simply never have beautiful hair again. Alas, I found Tawni!!! She (the salon owner, staff mentor, educator & master stylist) brought my hair back to life! Not only did she listen intently to my traumatic hair history- she articulated the whole way through our process- clearly keeping my hair's integrity the top priority, all whilst supporting my hair goals (long, light and healthy) and helping me achieve them. If hair were a language, trust- she speaks it! Our first couple of visits were foilyage services- we worked on gently lightening my hair for a brightened, "lived-in", natural look. She easily got me feeling good about my hair again, definitely boosted my confidence... but- then came the extensions! TBH I had never wanted extensions before .. I've seen them over the years on people and cannot deal with how bad or fake they often look- not to mention the damage certain methods can cause. She and I discussed my fears & hesitations, but her confidence that I was a perfect candidate made me feel comfortable in giving it a shot. Of course I was still skeptical going in, but based on my experience with her so far, I trusted she would not lead me astray! LITERALLY INSANE TRANSFORMATION. The install was fast (abt 2 hours) and painless. She used the "Rooted Method" which was developed by one of her staff members (a few other the stylists here also offer this service fyi). The wefts are sewn in (non-damaging! No tape, glue or heat required) and essentially invisible. They don't inhibit you from styling at all... bun, ponytail, braid, hi, low, heat styling etc. anything goes! Her color matching skills are IMPECCABLE- completely seamless. I have only been seeing Tawni for about 6 months now and she has completely changed my life. I cannot describe how good it feels to be back in some long tresses. And best of all- people have NO CLUE that its not my hair. It has made my daily life easier, as the hair is so high quality and holds style so well that I hardly have to mess with it for days at a time. Washing it is easy, styling it is a breeze, and most of all-- it looks natural and beautiful every day. I must admit, I wish I had done its sooner! The compliments i receive on the daily are enough confirm- I'm not getting rid of these luscious locks anytime soon. Another huge plus is that since they look so nice and styled all of the time, my own hair can rest and grow in the meantime- double WIN. Overall this review is more than just an experience "in salon". To look and feel good about your hair everyday is a priceless feeling. It took me a long time to finally find someone so talented that I can trust will not promise me one thing and deliver another...much less have me leaving in tears or regret. Best salon I've ever been to! I have tried out a few of the stylists and they've all been great. Brynn did an amazing job on some color for me this week. She's informative, funny, and kind. I have also had great experiences with Jenny! Jenny is a master with a razor cut and I will probably never let anyone else cut my hair- no one matches her ability to carve hair to fit the customer perfectly. The two other stylists I've met, Kristin and Katie, are knowledgeable and great at what they do. Katie is great if you're looking for vivid colors. We relocated to AZ 5 years ago and wow what an incredible undertaking it was to find a colorist/ stylist here but after 2-3 years and not a lot of great experiences, I found Tawni and her amazing team at Altered Ego Salon! I have also been seriously overwhelmed with allergies and dermatitis on my scalp since moving here. I have tried EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING but last week Tawni added a glycolic product that was an absolute game changer so that's why I had to share this experience. I went to see Jenny and she was very sweet and outgoing. Although she was very friendly, I feel as if she did not listen to what I asked for. I think it's really important for a stylist to listen to their customer especially if it's their first time seeing you! I have a big event coming up soon so this was a really important haircut! I did allllll the research and found out exactly what I wanted for my haircut. I asked for long layers, (very long) curtain bangs, & face framing layers. I also asked Jenny to keep my hair as long as possible and take off as little as she could. (I did NOT want a shag haircut) I thought my hair looked great when I left the salon and I was very pleased because she styled it nicely. However, after I got home and took a closer look I became very disappointed. My "face framing layers" start at the middle of my head and are in an angled line (long in the front, short in the back). My layers go from very short to very long and the length is super inconsistent and drastic. I thought I was overreacting at first, but I got some of my close friends opinions and theyve told me that no- it truly is a terrible haircut. I think the problem was the tools Jenny used. She used a razor throughout the whole haircut so every piece of hair is just a hacked chunk. I did not know at the time that she would use a razor and I did not know that she only does shag cuts. I am not only disappointed but I am very sad! I used to love my hair and was proud of it but now every time I look in the mirror I am overcome with sadness. I can't even wear my hair pulled back to hide the mess because half of it was hacked off and isn't long enough to put in a hair tie. I have lost all confidence and I don't think I can ever trust someone with my hair again. All in all the salon is beautiful and was completely full so I am sure there are amazing stylists there. Not to mention, the customer service was great. I really wish my experience could have been better but for now I am leaving this review in hopes it helps out the next person who goes to see Jenny. read more

BUYERS BEWARE! My experience with Altered Ego was terrible EVEN BEFORE MY HAIRCUT. I scheduled an appointment here to get a curly cut from Terri because I was told she was a master hair stylist and specialist with curly hair (ahem!). My appointment was booked a little more than a month out; the wait was dreadful, and I got really impatient. Then that week came around, and I couldn't make it to my appointment! So sad because I was so looking forward to it. I called to reschedule, and I was told that I WAS NOT ON THE SCHEDULE. WTF. WHY? So I was rescheduled I think a couple weeks out. The day finally arrived and I was supposed to go in at 6:30 pm. I had a long day, so by the time I got home, I wanted to relax until I left for the salon. My fiancé suggested that I call to make sure we were good to go because of the weird scheduling that happened before; it was almost 6. I called, and I was told AGAIN, I WAS TAKEN OFF THE SCHEDULE. You wouldn't believe how pissed I was at this point, and I should have taken it as a sign: DO NOT GO HERE. I was even told that Terri had already left. I was put on hold while they sorted out their sh*t, then all of a sudden, it was like, "Oh, come on in! Terri can see you, no problem!" When I got to the salon, I was greeted by a man named Chad. He didn't make it clear that he is one of the owners of the salon, but he did say that he was sorry about the scheduling. He told me some elaborate BS story about how I kept getting kicked off Terri's schedule--that I was being mixed up with another person by the same name with the same phone number. Uh-huh. Sure. That makes zero sense. So Chad offered to discount product for me as a way to make up for it. I thought that was nice, except I found out after my cut that I either really dislike or simply don't use any of the products they carried. My consultation with Terri went well, I thought. I thought we were on the same page, so then she started with a dry cut, washed it, and styled it--NOT according to what we talked about, which what we were going for was an elongated curl, NOT diffused-from-the-bottom tighter curls. And I hated it. But I went with it, I thanked her and I was pleasant. I figured, I'd go home and rewash it and style it properly the next day. By the next day, I did all the things. And even though I did all the things, my hair still smelled of the stinky (and I mean, STRONG STINKY!) products she used in my hair. Regardless, my $100 haircut was terrible, and I was devastated. Terri chopped off way too much hair on my right side, so there's an ugly gap, and the lengths on both sides don't even match. (See photo) I called the salon, and tried to work with Terri on a solution. I met with her a week later to discuss filling that gap with extensions. Mind you, Terri doesn't acknowledge that there's a problem; she defends her work with, "So you don't like layers." There at the salon, I decided, "Yes, let's go with it. You can do extensions; I trust you." And Terri's response was, "Ok, but I don't want you to blame me for any damage that might occur from wearing extensions. Will you sign a waiver?" I was even ready to sign the waiver!! After the consultation, I told my fiancé how it went. Thankfully, he helped me to see that she does NOT want to work with me, and I should just take the refund that was offered instead of the free extensions. Even getting a refund was a pain in the butt. And I wasn't refunded the full amount ($85 cut + $15 tip). I was refunded just the $85. Today, I called and asked if they'd gotten Denman brushes in stock, so I could cash in on my discount from the scheduling issue, and the receptionist insisted that they will not be getting any in (even though Chad said they would) and that I should find another salon. "Oh, I have!" Everyone I've interfaced with there is unprofessional. Take it from me, DO NOT GO TO ALTERED EGO. read more
