We live in San Diego and wanted the San Diego ice skating experience...but it just wasn't working. The ice was horrible. Pits and puddles all over, making a very unfun experience. Yes, I paid $60 for my family to skate and was very pleased we could come and go throughout the day's session, but we only lasted 15 minutes because it was so awful. It was actually painful to try to "skate." We left for lunch and thought we'd come back, hoping they'd resurface the ice. As we walked up, it looked as if they had, but it was only covered with at least an inch of water! I actually saw a guy fall and he was completely soaked. We happened to come across the ice rink, and my daughter wanted give ice skating a shot. The staff are very welcoming and will answer any questions. Coach Ella made all the difference that night. She spent about 15 minutes total with my girl. In a session of about 90 minutes, my daughter went from grabbing the rails to taking her first glides and having the confidence to skate around on her own. I barely made it around the rink once before I wanted out of there. As a native San Diegan, I have ice skated only a handful of times in my life. I haven't been on the ice for at least ten years and now I remember why. Ice skating is so hard and terrifying. I also had a bad experience in my college years playing broomball so that contributed to my fear. I first got the wrong sized skates. When I put them in and tried to walk, my feet kept going inward and I couldn't stay upright. After getting a smaller size, it was a little easier to walk but still very awkward. I would recommend to newcomers to bring either very thick socks or two pairs to double them up. Within a half a hour of the opening, the rink was full of people. It made things more difficult for those who were new to the ice as you have to navigate around all of the people. The ice didn't seem to be kept up too well as the sides were very slushy and melting. For people like me who hung onto the wall, we had to work our way through the ice clumps. I liked that the ice rink provided at least two watchers on the ice to give assistance to those who would fall or needed some tips on what not to do. They are decked out in red polo shirts or jackets. Just ask if you need help and they will come over. The entry fee of $14 is very reasonable. It does come with the ice skate rental. If you plan ahead and get there early, there is no line for the ticket purchase. I went on a Wednesday when they first opened at 10 am so there was no wait. The ticket line is to the far right. You then walk to the left to pick up your ice skates. Everyone working is friendly and helpful. I was pleased to find out that all proceeds go to Rady Children's Hospital. read more

My only recommendation is to clean the ice more often. We were there almost two hours and grant it, it was busy but the ice was bumpy and beginning to melt on the edges making it hard for the boys to skate. This is honestly not the best outdoor skating rink I've been too. Easy to find in the middle of liberty station. Skate rentals were $14 each adult. The really cool thing is that you can skate as long as you like, no time limit. The cost included the skate rental. If you wanted socks and gloves it was an additional $5 each. The skates run a little bit small and you can exchange them if they don't fit right. I ended up exchanging my right skate. They brought out the Zamboni which usually takes 20 to 30 minutes to re-do the ice. That was a bummer, but as long as you have your ticket, you can come back! It's not elevated, no slab of ice. So it really felt like you were skating on top of slick concrete. There were valleys and slippery spots, and I ate s*!t twice! All benefits Rady's children. This would be AWESOME if they elevated the slab and the ice was thicker. Great venue, lots of parking, love liberty station... This seasonal addition needs to be better! read more

I've bought season's passes for myself and the girls to go skating at Fantasy on Ice every year for the past 5-6 years, and it is now one of their favorite holiday tradition. This year, it's moved from Horton Plaza downtown to beautiful Liberty Station! What's not to love about ice skating? Outside? In San Diego! Because it's San Diego, yes, it's going to be warm. Yes, the ice may melt, and there might be puddles. Not all the time. Sometimes, the ice is very solid. In any event, my kids think this is part of the appeal. All the proceeds go to Rady Children's Hospital, which is great. And generally when I bring a bunch of kids, many of which have barely or never skated before, the staff on the ice are so nice and encouraging in trying to teach them how to skate. The details: Open daily Nov. 18 - Jan. 3, 2016, 10am-10 pm. Cost: $14/adults, $12 kids 12 and under; includes skate rental (and these are nice skates). Or, you can skate unlimited times for $40 (good deal if you plan to skate more than twice). The Pros: -Cute little rink in the middle of liberty station -Decor is cute -Food truck nearby with snack/drinks = awesome -Set-up to get skates/on the ice with a quickness = fantastic -Your skate fees are a donation to Rady's Children hospital so you are purchasing a ticket towards a very worthy casuse The Cons: -The skates are older donated skates and hurt worse than those regular ice skates from your hometown rink. Not comfortable and bent -There is a water pit in front of the ice entrance and exit due to the outdoor conditions so be careful of the splash zone -Patches of ice were awesome, others = not so much Overall, this would be an amazing experience if the skates were better. Really bad ice. They only resurface at 5 and 7:30pm. Makes it really difficult to skate, especially for beginners. We went around the rink once and felt like asking for a refund, but sign says you have to check the ice conditions before buying ticket. Skates are really bad too. The ice is super bumpy, even after they "zambonied" it, and the skates are hard to tighten, so they're wobbly. I'm usually good at ice skating, but I just could not do it. It's the Saturday before they close, so I understand that it's super packed. I skated for about two minutes then stayed on the bench the rest of the time. We decided to check out Fantasy on Ice during the holidays with a group of friends at this new Liberty Station location. We went on a Sunday afternoon at 11am and we timed it perfectly. There weren't a lot of folks out there but as the day went on, the rink began to fill up. I imagine people preferred to skate when it gets darker but for the kids in our group who were under 8, daytime was perfect. My husband brought his own skates so we thought it would be quick to get him out there but the lines took almost 15-20 min to get through. There weren't long lines or anything but just took a long time for the one person working to get people through. At least they were nice. The cost was $14 for adults and $12 for children. There wasn't a different cost for skate rental vs. bringing your own so it's just a preference if you have your own. The rink is a pretty decent size for an outdoor rink and is very intimate. It's not huge so you won't see kids speed skating and making it dangerous for little ones. Don't expect the ice to be NHL quality but it's what you'll expect with an outdoor rink...in San Diego! ; ) We'll be back for sure in the future with our little peanut. We had a blast! read more

In theory this place seems fun. However we went on nov 20th and it was a chilly day but the ice was terribly watery. We paid $48 for our 4 children to skate and the littlest fell after 15 minutes. She was completely soaked and we had to leave . There is a sign saying they do not refund. They should NOT be opened if the ice is in such bad skating Condition. It could be really fun if they took care of ice or made sure it was ok to skate on safely. It's wrong to take people's money and dishonest to be open when kids can't skate without bringing their snorkels along too! Don't waste your money. read more

Super cute ice skating rink in liberty station! I loved how our payments we're donated directly to Rady's Children's Hospital too! Only thing is, there were water puddles at every corner of the rink and a girl in front of us even slipped and got taken out by an ambulance on a stretcher! So catch! But everyone else including my teenage cousins we're also too scared to even leave the railing, especially after the incident! It's in Point Loma well Liberty Station parking is really easy, just park and walk over to the rink. Nice location and maybe good at night but worst ice skating experience ever. Took my kids today and although all three of us skate well we could barely get around the bumpy puddle filled surface and super small. We saw several people come and go like us within 15 minutes. I didn't want to ask for my money back as the proceeds benefit Rady's but we will never go again. Be warned and avoid day time skating at least (to avoid puddles) but overall the surface was so bumpy. Next time we are back to Kroc center or UTC. read more

I came here mostly because the proceeds all go to Radys children's hospital. I will return every year, though, because of the staff. They kept several employees on the ice in easily identifiable red jackets to help people learn to skate, check on people when they fall, tighten the skates for kids who had them too loose, and generally encourage everyone to have a good time. The parents pretty much let their kids roam free in the rink but the kids have no idea what they are doing and are literally all over the place and in one's way. I'm not a skating champion but I do like to move at more than a 1/2 per hour pace on the ice, this place is just not the place to do it. I left within 20 minutes, I couldn't take bumping into one more unsupervised child or teenager taking a selfie every two seconds. Stick to the indoor rinks during non-holiday weeks. You can get a season pass if you buy before the season starts; opening day was also discounted, and there was an 45 minute ice show, with live music to skate to!!!
