Amazing views and a fun atmosphere but the reality was such a bummer. We paid $50 and only skated for about 20 minutes because the conditions were SO BAD. There is zero maintenance on the ice. My child is a skilled and experienced ice skater but had such a hard time skating because of how scratched the ice is and how wet it was. My daughter fell once and got absolutely soaked because there were literal puddles in the ice. Her clothes were soaking wet so we had to cut our time short because it was just not fun. Many other people fell and you could see their clothes were absolutely soaked. I asked the staff if they zamboni the ice and they said they only do it once a day! read more

Came here to do ice skating and it was fun! Very crowded but it's a very popular location and activity so we were prepared. Also pretty expensive 90$ for 2 of us. Tickets for all activities have to be bought in advance! Cannot buy ice skating day of as you need to reserve a time slot. A lot of families and couples were in line trying to do it same day and were turned away. They only have like 5 benches for people to sit and switch out shoes for skates so it's a bit hectic. And no lockers to keep your belongings in so people put items under benches hoping it wouldn't be stolen. Booking is an hour and half time slot which honestly is plenty we were done after an hour as the rink is so small and a lot of people were causing hold ups with being able to go fast and lots of people falling. Overall still a lot of fun!! read more

An iconic San Diego activity that most locals don't get to do because it is really expensive lol, however I got the chance to do it through a work event and it was cute! We reserved one of the firepits. All the food we ordered was surprisingly better than expected, it's not ice rink food but more like hotel food! It's a super cute date idea. I will say the rink is quite small and it's superrrr crowded, even on a Thursday. Tip: A lot of folks said their skates were uncomfortable. I definitely recommend sizing a half size up. Mine had something hard sticking out inside, and I told them and they fixed it right away so seems like it a regular problem. As as others have mentioned, this experience has so much potential but falls short in so many areas. Of course, skating by the sea with incredible views next to The Del sounds amazing in theory. Overall, we had fun. BUT, the company who runs the rink (not affiliated with the hotel) does almost everything wrong safety-wise. 1. Expensive. Adults and kids alike pay $40 for 90 minutes of skating. You buy your tickets online and choose your time to skate, but the reservation times aren't monitored which results in overcrowding on the ice and UNSAFE conditions. If you're not an experienced skater I would recommend wearing a helmet- especially for the littles!! 2. SO MUCH WATER on the ice. Virtually no maintenance or resurfacing of the ice! Literally skating through puddles, kids falling all over the place and getting soaked. 3. Staff running the rink are very young- no one looked over the age of 20- they all seemed inexperienced and not intervening on the ice when they should (kids skating too fast, going the wrong way, etc). Felt chaotic. 4. Not enough skate monitors out on the ice. Most of the time the staff were seemingly invisible and did next to nothing to help when people fell. One kid hit the back of his head quite hard and another skater helped him more than the staff did. 5. THE MOST UNCOMFORTABLE skates ever. My daughter has blisters and my ankles are bruised from the hard plastic rubbing against them. 5. No cubbies or lockers to store your shoes, etc. while skating. So disorganized! 6. No decent seating areas or shade for general seating unless you want to pay ridiculous prices for igloo reservations. Overall we had fun, but I am thankful that my kids and I got out of there without breaking any bones! read more

This was a terible experience for us, the rink was melted and everything here is overpriced, minimum spend of $500 on seating areas around the rink. Saw multiple kids wipe out, as kids do, and get absolutely soaked, then precede to start crying. If you decide to do this you will end up buying an overpriced, branded outfit to replace soaked clothing. SAVE YOUR TIME AND MONEY, DO NOT RECOMMEND read more

Beautiful location for Christmas & festive decorations, but very crowded, unsafe, and super expensive! I felt like I was at Disneyland with all the crowds moving in a herd on the ice-rink...:( Not enough room to skate, just bumper to bumper traffic and all about making the money. Ice-skating was not worth $40 a person and keep in mind it's $40 for children too! Ya, I was blown away by that too. You still have to pay for a 2-3 year to ice-skate for $40, I find that mind blowing. It was way too crowded & very unsafe with people falling left and right falling like flies holding on to dear life on the side rails. Some girls were holding hands and they bumped into another group and they all fell together. I feet like I was watching "Americas most funniest but dangerous videos" ! I witnessed a guy who fell on his face and his tooth went back and he was bleeding out of his mouth. Ouchie! His poor lip was so swollen and he kept spitting out blood. I kept asking him if he was okay, cause I was worried about him. First aid/nurse was assisting him with ice and asking if he was okay. Then 20 minutes later, another little boy fell back and hit his head so hard. He just laid there and cried. First aid lady came again but just had him lay there to make sure he didn't have a concussion:( He got up and I think he was okay but he was crying. At the end, I slipped as I was walking out of the rink and fell on my left pelvis pretty hard. I was fine but woke up with next day with pain... as mentioned way too crowded! Lastly, the ice skates were the most uncomfortable skates I've ever put on my feet. Think of rollerblades claps with plastic digging into your ankles.. Ouch! I even had thick socks and I even asked for different ice-skates and a bigger size, still very uncomfortable and I had thick socks on ! Last year, we went to Huntington Beach, ice-skating,@ the Pasea hotel. That was WAY more fun and less people, very magical. As mentioned, the only highlight of "Skating by the Sea" were the igloos on the beach ($400/night.. we didn't do it) cute, festive sand sculptures, the light show that the Del offers ever 30 min at the front of hotel by the trees and my adult hot chocolate. The hot chocolate was $6 for reg. & adult hot chocolate was $16 which was yummy.. whiskey w/peanut butter combined with hot chocolate so it tasted amazing like a Reese's. That was my fav part of the night besides the free magical light show at back of the hotel. I get it, it's a tourist spot.. but honestly not worth getting severely injured. There is absolutely no food there for the kids., only hot cocoa and grilled cheese. If you're bringing kids, I would definitely bring dinner to go and Starbucks to go. Parking was $35! Other than that, we will not be coming back to the Del to ice-skate every again. Only to see the light show, etc. I woke up next day with a bruised hip, back pain, shoulder elbow and hand pain. Again, I am in good shape, and walk daily, play tennis, etc. Please take in consideration that I am an average ice-skater and not a beginner. I will be returning to Pasea HB again where it was less crowded with same ocean views and way more comfortable skates. Happy Holidays and please be safe!! read more

Booked an appointment on New Year's Eve a month ago. Found out that it was raining on that day and tried getting a refund. Tried talking to the staff if we can get a refund because of the weather but they didn't help at all. They kept saying that they'll send me an email if it gets cancelled due to the rain the night before or the morning of the day of. Day of, we drive from OC to SD despite it raining. I still try to call since it's raining heavy. Mind you I spent over $700 since we had a large group. I booked an appointment at 3:00 and it's already 12:00 with no email. Wonderful experience here! Brought my daughter early in the season and day as many of the reviews mention how busy it gets. Hardly anyone else on the ice when we came at 2pm. Skates were great, customer service was excellent, and they got to experience a beautiful day ice skating to the sunshine and lovely live music. You can see the palm trees and waves and even feel the ocean breeze. There weren't that many people, and the staff was friendly and in helping us get the right size skates. The location is beautiful! The rink is right on the beach. The hotel Del is so beautiful in the winter with all the lights. Tickets were reservable online in advanced with a limited capacity. We reserved for 4:30pm and it wasn't too crowded at first. I've skates were included. I've ice skates in the past before and always found the skates so uncomfortable but these weren't bad and seemed high quality rentals. At 4:30 the ice was nice and smooth. But as our 90 minute session went on the ice got rougher and rougher. I'm not sure if they're ever zamboni after initially opening at 4pm. It felt a little dangerous towards the end when the ice got so rough. I loved the beautiful sunset beach views while in the ice! Got some amazing photos too!! The experience is a little pricey but I think it's so unique to ice skate at the beach and the skate rentals were so nice, that it was worthwhile. After our ice skating session ended we headed over to the hotel Del ice show. It was cool to see and just a few minutes walk away from the rink. read more

Has the potential to be a great experience but falls short on every level but the location. The ice and maintenance of the facility is terrible. The ice skates are quite possibly the cheapest quality skate you can imagine. They are incredibly uncomfortable and the tang is not well centered or balanced under the skate. There is very limited available seating around the rink for parents to hang out and watch their kids unless you are paying for reserved seating area. The rubberized mats around the rink are all popping up and coming apart or bubbled up in areas creating a trip hazard. Lastly, and I think this point is definitely variable based on weather, but today was 75 and sunny and it was not an ice rink, it was a a giant puddle with an inch of water on top. If you fell, you got up soaking wet. At least it was 75 and sunny to warm you up. On the positive side, the location right on the beach with a beautiful view and the incredible historic hotel are pretty cool. If you're looking for ambience and a terrible skating experience, this place fits the bill. If you want a great skating experience, for way less money, go anywhere else. This place is $40/person for 90 mins of skating on a small, crowded rink, with terrible skates and poorly maintained ice conditions... but a nice view. read more
