The food here is very tasty and the service is quick and cordial. My son is an expert at finding these hidden gems. We really enjoy the food here and have been here a few times. My favorite dishes so far are: Beef cubes with seven spices (appetizer) Fish with Plum Sauce - this is deep-fried fish with a plum sauce, and it is better than your typical sweet-and-sour fish dish Shredded Beef with scallions Shredded pork with bamboo Yu tsai with garlic Eggplant with basil Spinach with garlic I didn't particularly like the crispy stinky bean curd or the steamed fish with soy beans. Every time I come here, I enjoy the authentic flavors and the great choices. Taipei Cafe has been here in Rockville for many years and a really delicious choice for fast and tasty Chinese food. Right next to the Great Wall Supermarket and with plenty of parking spaces too. Came here with family today and it was a 3 star experience with some stand out dishes. Ambiance is pretty lacking here and everything just felt like it had a layer of coated stickiness. Service wasn't exceptionally fast either as only 2 people working the entire restaurant. We ordered a lu rou fan (braised pork over rice), stinky tofu, popcorn chicken and yellow chive with tofu gan and sliced pork. Lu rou fan was decent, but not sure why the rice was soggy, like it was soaked in water, which is not how this dish is normally served. Rice should be nice and sticky soaking up the juices from the braised pork. The yellow chive with tofu gan and pork was also more watery than I like this dish and it should be stir fried over high heat and fairly dry. It also lacked in flavor. Stinky tofu was very good but the picked cabbage was just terrible. I tried eating a few pieces of the cabbage thinking maybe it was just one piece that was a fluke, but the picked cabbage lacked any flavor. I was so disappointed as stinky tofu is one of my favorite Taiwanese dishes. Popcorn chicken was solid, but this isn't normally a dish I order as I don't enjoy too many fried foods. We just wanted a quick dinner on Friday night because we worked so late, so we picked this place. I ordered a pork and shrimp wonton soup, and my husband got a beef noodle soup. My wonton soup was really disappointing--the filling was tiny, and it was hard to find any shrimp inside. I honestly felt down after finishing the entire bowl. Oh, how I've missed the oyster pancakes at another Rockville Chinese restaurant. It's been too many years. But how glad I was to find it at Taipei Cafe. Their pancake did not disappoint. Plenty of oysters and an almost sweet savory sauce. I also enjoyed the pig ears. Not spicy at all in my opinion. They're also great cold as the next day's leftovers! I really wanted the salt and pepper fish filet but wasn't sure how spicy it was going to be. I ended up getting the Fish with Crispy Soybean. I have been searching for a place that serves Taiwanese Shaved Ice for so long and this restaurant truly delivers. They have personal sizes for 2 people, but they can also make large orders filled with all the toppings including M&Ms, red beans, taro, lotus root, condensed milk, lychee, oreos, and jelly. Not too many places in the area serving a wide array of Taiwanese food like here. I'm always drawn to the beef noodle soup, a large bowl of the good stuff. I always have enough to bring home for leftovers. The oyster pancake and lu rou fan are both favorites of mine. I took my Taiwanese friend who was visiting from an area that doesn't have any Taiwanese restaurants and she really enjoyed it. Lots of space and seating around the restaurant, though I have been there for dinner service when it was almost filled up! If you don't have a car, don't be afraid of the walk here from the metro! It's totally worth the trek. Plus, it's near Great Wall, Rockville Town Center, and Yi Fang, so make a nice trip out of it. read more

I am so glad we stumbled upon this gem on our way to a grocery store. At first I was hesitant to go inside because it looked like nobody was eating there but I'm so glad we did because they serve authentic taiwanese dishes! I love the minced pork over rice, the pork spare ribs, fish with plum sauce, fried intestines and beef noodle soup. My hubby liked the oyster pancake a lot. We loved it so much that we brought our visitors here the next day. The aunties that serve look like so serious but I tried to complement the dish in mandarin and they were so happy. The next time we went back they recognized me and they were all smiles and friendly. The ambiance looks a little bit sad because the place is huge inside but there are just a few customers. Although they are using their original menu, some of the items aren't available anymore. However they do have some off the menu items available - written in Chinese on the board up front. There was plenty of seating and service was good although we went when there was downtime. Parking was okay at the time. My family and I ended up ordering the Shredded Beef with Spicy Green Peppers (w/side of rice), Seafood Stir Fried Egg Noodles, and the Pork Mushroom Thick Noodle Soup. Overall the food was okay. If I had to order something again, it would be the Pork Mushroom Thick Noodle Soup. They had dessert available too, but we were too full to try. We had some leftovers that we asked to be packed. They pack it back at the kitchen. I'm glad to see this place is still open after all these years and especially after the pandemic. Lots of staple dishes are found at Taipei Cafe that can't be found anywhere else. We recently came in for some shaved ice. This is the Taiwanese style, topped with syrup (made from molasses, I think), condensed milk and a choice of 3 toppings. This round, we got grass jelly, peanuts and taro. So satisfying on a particularly hot day. Of course to offset the sugar, we had to order some snacks. Pictured is their Taiwanese burger, a juicy slice of braised pork belly nestled in a bun and topped with cilantro and sugared peanuts. I forgot to take a picture of the "crispy" intestines, which were not crispy at all but we enjoyed the flavor. Service is always fast. Tables are clean. The restaurant is on the same side as Great Wall and it can be a little hard to find the entrance if it is your first time there, but it is manageable. read more

I feel like the place has changed and gotten worse since I last visited. I often end up in the area to visit family and end up eating here usually once or twice a year. The prices have gone up, but I feel like the quality of the food has unfortunately gone down. The dry hot pot bowl we ordered was also unnecessarily spicy. Before anyone gets mad, I understand that Szechuan dishes are spicy, but they are the type of spicy that allows the flavors of the dish to be elevated. The type of spicy that we encountered with this dish was the kind where all the other flavors are completely masked, and I couldn't focus on much aside from getting more water. Taipei Cafe is kind of isolated on the Pike, but it's right across from the shopping center that has China Bistro and other Asian stores/restaurants. My friend and I had their Taiwanese fried chicken, beef noodle soup, and hamburger bun. I was looking forward to trying their soup dumplings, but the waitress said they only make the crab ones (opposed to the regular pork ones that are also on their menu). The fried chicken was super crispy and tender. The beef noodle soup broth is mildly spicy, but as someone who doesn't like any spice, I could tolerate it. Plentiful, delicious and friendly. This has been TaiPei cafe for as long as i have known. They are probably one of the more classic Taiwanese places still left in the Rockville area. Not many are left. The only gripe is they don't have good chilli oil. They just give you the bottled stuff for their "chilli sauce". The pandemic has kept me away from the motherland for far too long, and I'm missing Taiwan more than ever. I came here with low expectations, knowing I tend to be disappointed by Chinese and Taiwanese food in the DMV (I'm a snob about my people's food, I'm sorry), but I was definitely impressed! - Popcorn chicken over rice (鹽酥雞飯): AMAZING. Crispy and juicy and flavorful. The minced pork was a little salty but not too bad, and it balanced out the napa cabbage, which was a little on the bland side. - Taiwanese hamburger (台式刈包): the meat is super tender and flavorful, and I loved the sweet peanut powder sprinkled on top. The bao was good but I wish it was just a little fluffier. - Braised beef noodle soup (紅燒牛肉麵): as soon as I saw the way too dark brown color of the broth, I knew this was gonna be too salty. The meat wasn't as fatty as you might find at other restaurants, but it was still tender. The noodles tasted like store-bought dry noodles that were overcooked. Aside from the disappointing BNS, this definitely satisfied my Taiwanese food craving. Portions were pretty big and the price was affordable. The ceiling fans were running below the ceiling lights, which made us dizzy when reading the menu, so we had to request turning off the ceiling fans above us. The crispy stinky bean curd came with pickled cabbages and great in hot sauce. The radish and egg pancake did not have much dried radish. The roasted pork and the spicy beef were well done for rice. The place does not look like much, but the taste and flavor are here. I feel like this place has a lot of authenticity attached to it and it gives off the hole in the wall feeling. From the older tea pots to the dishes, it just gives off that vibe. I wouldn't come here to impress - unless its only for the food, but I would come here if you crave that Taiwanese taste and you just cant seem to get the flavor from other places. That is why I come here. I generally only have one dish that I fully enjoy. The other dishes are selections that my parents enjoy. I tend to come here with family too since I am not well versed with the menu. The parking does not seem like much, but there are parking spots just around the corner so it shouldn't be a problem. It is fairly close to Rockville Town Center in case you need to be nearby. Again, not the best place to impress interior wise, but the food is why this place gets good reviews. Absolutely will be back. Our restaurant of choice was closed(wrong day of the week) so we ducked in here for food. We ordered the salt and pepper chicken appetizer, the seafood stir-fried rice noodles, and Braised pork chop with scallion. We saw one going out and we will definitely be back for our own tower of shaved ice with toppings. The dishes came out quickly and were piping hot, moist, and flavored as promised on the menu. If you are cutting back on salt, hold off on the salt and pepper chicken... if you aren't, this was a super appetizer. The chicken was moist and we loved the flavor and the crunch. The noodles were not overwhelmed with sauce but packed a lot of flavor. They were not stuck together and the seafood was perfectly cooked (shrimp, squid, & scallop). If you are looking for more seafood than noodles you will be disappointed but we enjoyed this noodle dish immensely. The pork was the best pork I have had in a long time. Again the meat was perfectly cooked, moist, and tender. I'm betting son is going to love the leftovers as the servings were generous. This was a quiet place with a lot of seating option including tables in a back room for larger groups with lazy susans in the middle for the dishes.
