Every time I come here, I enjoy the authentic flavors and the great choices. Taipei Cafe has been here in Rockville for many years and a really delicious choice for fast and tasty Chinese food. Right next to the Great Wall Supermarket and with plenty of parking spaces too. I really enjoyed the shaved ice dessert which can be shared with 3-4 people easily with so many toppings which sweet and refreshing at the same time. I have never been disappointed with the food here and glad to have Taipei Cafe as a choice in Rockville.

Ordered in person for takeout and waited 15 minutes. Pretty good. Their Taiwanese three-cup chicken (with bones) is still delicious, and their gua bao (Taiwanese burger) is beautifully presented with its own specially designed box. Came here around 2 pm on Christmas Day. Nearly empty inside.

This is the go to place for my family for years, I have followed the chef and Cindy for 3 decades. We love their stinky tofu, Taiwanese fried chicken, and many more. We love to buy live lobsters or crabs from Great Wall supermarket near by and the chef will cook in different ways for us. One thing is important for us is that Taipei Cafe has been consistent over the years.

Lu rou fan - rice was very soggy like soaked in water, but the rest of the dish was good and good value ($4.95)

Came here with family today and it was a 3 star experience with some stand out dishes. Ambiance is pretty lacking here and everything just felt like it had a layer of coated stickiness. Service wasn't exceptionally fast either as only 2 people working the entire restaurant. We ordered a lu rou fan (braised pork over rice), stinky tofu, popcorn chicken and yellow chive with tofu gan and sliced pork. Lu rou fan was decent, but not sure why the rice was soggy, like it was soaked in water, which is not how this dish is normally served. Rice should be nice and sticky soaking up the juices from the braised pork. The yellow chive with tofu gan and pork was also more watery than I like this dish and it should be stir fried over high heat and fairly dry. It also lacked in flavor. Stinky tofu was very good but the picked cabbage was just terrible. I tried eating a few pieces of the cabbage thinking maybe it was just one piece that was a fluke, but the picked cabbage lacked any flavor. I was so disappointed as stinky tofu is one of my favorite Taiwanese dishes. Popcorn chicken was solid, but this isn't normally a dish I order as I don't enjoy too many fried foods. Overall, some dishes were good, but others not so much. I could be convinced to come back but probably won't return on my own volition.

We just wanted a quick dinner on Friday night because we worked so late, so we picked this place. I ordered a pork and shrimp wonton soup, and my husband got a beef noodle soup. My wonton soup was really disappointing--the filling was tiny, and it was hard to find any shrimp inside. I honestly felt down after finishing the entire bowl. The beef noodle soup, however, had a good portion and nice chunks of meat. I think it's better to stick to their signature dishes (like Taiwanese stir-fried rice noodles, oyster pancake, or three-cup chicken) and avoid the wonton soup--especially after a long, tiring day of work on Friday.

Everything was delicious and cheap The minced pork and rice dish was good Enjoyed the huge dessert too! You can choose your toppings- we chose red bean, grass jelly, and taro The veggies were good too

Oh, how I've missed the oyster pancakes at another Rockville Chinese restaurant. It's been too many years. But how glad I was to find it at Taipei Cafe. Their pancake did not disappoint. Plenty of oysters and an almost sweet savory sauce. I also enjoyed the pig ears. Not spicy at all in my opinion. They're also great cold as the next day's leftovers! I really wanted the salt and pepper fish filet but wasn't sure how spicy it was going to be. I ended up getting the Fish with Crispy Soybean. There was just too much soybean which I thought overpowered the dish. There are more dishes I want to try next time including the shaved ice!

Immersed with the culture! No doubt people drive all the way from VA or different part of MD to have a meal here. Foo was outstandingly good! We had the Taiwanese Chicken Popcorn and I forgot the noodles we ordered but it maybe plain looking but the taste was so rich. Serving was fast as well and hands-on. The place can accommodate big groups for sure and they offer boba (Taiwan is known for it so this place will not fail you) Love this place and will stop by again.

Flavor: a little taste of Taiwan in Maryland! Really good dishes all around. Stinky tofu was great - milder stink, but key flavors were there with spicy sauce and veggies. Spicy beef noodle soup had nice dark rich broth. Classic rice, egg, meat had the great taste to it. Kids loved the dumplings. Presentation: classic and efficient... giant dry pot was great. Service: attentive and quick turnaround Seating: plenty! Can accommodate large parties. Friendly: very nice all around! Drinks: tea, soda, beer. Usuals to cool ya down when eating the spicy dishes. Cost: affordable/good prices for the fresh made and large dishes. Party of 9, ~$200 includes tip when large parties (we ordered a lot and took leftovers to go) Parking: plenty out front, free. Vegan / Vegetarian: yes some options (like stinky tofu) or other veggie dishes. Not so much Vegan.

I love the oyster pancake and salt pepper fried fish here! The beef noodle soup is good as well. The soup dumpling skin is too thick so I wouldn't order that again.

Taiwanese Shaved Ice

I have been searching for a place that serves Taiwanese Shaved Ice for so long and this restaurant truly delivers. They have personal sizes for 2 people, but they can also make large orders filled with all the toppings including M&Ms, red beans, taro, lotus root, condensed milk, lychee, oreos, and jelly. The staff are incredibly kind (I spilled my tea all over) and they quickly rushed to help, and their portion sizes and prices are great! Speaking Chinese is a plus, but not needed.

Not too many places in the area serving a wide array of Taiwanese food like here. I'm always drawn to the beef noodle soup, a large bowl of the good stuff. I always have enough to bring home for leftovers. The oyster pancake and lu rou fan are both favorites of mine. I took my Taiwanese friend who was visiting from an area that doesn't have any Taiwanese restaurants and she really enjoyed it. Lots of space and seating around the restaurant, though I have been there for dinner service when it was almost filled up! If you don't have a car, don't be afraid of the walk here from the metro! It's totally worth the trek. Plus, it's near Great Wall, Rockville Town Center, and Yi Fang, so make a nice trip out of it.

I ordered the Taiwanese style "Popcorn chicken" and once it was done, I sat down right away to take a bite. I took three bites and it was so flavorful and all of a sudden I realized when I looked at the chicken it wasn't cooked and raw. I then thought it was just me and took two more bites of the chicken and realized some of the chicken were raw and some were cooked. I was so sad inside. I let the owners know right away and they said would you like us to make you another one. I felt uncomfortable to eat it again and said no thank you I would just like my refund. They asked me if I wanted anything else and I said no thank you. I was just sad because I wanted to really enjoy what I ordered and my stomach felt sick after knowing I ate raw chicken bites when it ate into the chicken. Sadly it was very important for me to write this review because I did get sick from what I ate and have not felt good for the rest of today till the evening. Pleaseeeeee Check your chicken before you order and see if it was done.

It's usually packed with Asian folks who come for A&J's dim sum-style food. The food is described as "Northern style" Chinese, and it's definitely not Americanized. I've eaten many a bowl of noodles here, but my favorites are the Dan Dan Mian (with hot spicy sesame sauce and peanuts) and Xue Cai Ro Si Mian (shredded pork and mustard green noodle soup). I've also enjoyed Ma La Er Si (sliced pigs ears with hot and spicy seasoning) and Pi Dan Dou Fu (tofu with Thousand Year Egg) - things I doubt will EVER show up on a menu in my hometown. And the dumplings: oh my. I think I've tried them all, and haven't found one yet I wouldn't order again. The only downside to A&J (besides it being a drive for me) is their cash-only policy. Fortunately there are lots of nearby ATMs, but beware if it's your first visit. Prices are very reasonable and portions are perfect, so overall value is great. If you haven't been, go now, and work your way through the menu. Trust me, you'll thank me!

I have kept this place in the back of my mind, with fond memories, however, have not visited in some years due to multiple moves around the country. Recently, my friend was organizing a casual gathering for our friend group, and asked ChatGPT if there were any good recommendations for food in the area that was affordable and delicious, and A&J came up as a top choice. So I came back to A&J after almost 10 years, and the food was just as good as I remembered. The decor remained simple and unchanged, but this is very typical of Asian restaurants. The menu was large, and it's easy to order by circling items you want on the paper menu. We had a mix of noodle soup bowls (so many different flavors and styles) and appetizers, and everything we tried was delicious. Our bill came out to less than $25 per person with tip. I could imagine more pretentious Chinese restaurants downtown upcharging a lot more for lower quality Chinese food (Queen's English, for example). It was so good and affordable, that I actually ended up coming back the next day with a different friend. Overall, excellent experience, and I will be back again soon! One interesting tidbit, my coworker who grew up in the Midwest and only eats meat, potatoes, absolutely no vegetables, started going here for lunch and loves it. I think flour-based items (noodles, dumplings, buns) are really the star of the restaurant, and this can be enjoyed across different taste palates! I hope you will give this place a try.

We came on a Friday night, and had to wait about 30 minutes for seating. The dining area is basically wooden chairs and tables. Not much ambiance, but that's not why you come here. We ordered scallion pancakes, soup dumplings, eggplant with basil, and noodles with chicken. I never had scallion pancakes. Nothing I would order again. I have nothing to compare, but I assume they're good. The dumplings were fantastic. The eggplant, which comes in three varieties, appeared to be a popular item with other guests. I guess it was good. I'm not a fan of saucy food. The noodles were fantastic. I feel like we ordered wrong, although my girlfriend picked everything except the noodles. This is not a place to visit if you're looking to lose weight. The hard sugar in the eggplant alone was more than I consume in two months. I'm probably not in the best position to rate our dinner as I avoid carbs and sugar. If I were to come back, I'd stick the noodles and revisit the menu to see if there is a solid chicken option. I came here hungry and left hungry as the food was not filling, and the sugar content sent my system into a bit of a shock. Nonetheless, if this cuisine is your thing, you won't be disappointed.
