    Spicy beef noodle soup

We ordered the spicy beef noodle soup, pork potstickers, and beef roll. Everyone always highly recommends the spicy beef noodle soup but I really did not like it, would probably rate it a 2/5 or 3/5 stars. The broth was VERY flavorless (had a very weird taste as well, almost like maybe the taste of dish water??), and definitely NOT spicy. The greens were undercooked and hard to bite, and also had that weird dish water taste. The noodles however seemed fresh and had a nice chewy texture. I've had much better beef noodle soup elsewhere, which was disappointing after the rave reviews! The potstickers were good and I would order them again. The beef roll was our favorite, seemed very fresh and a nice portion size. The prices seem pretty fair for what you order. Service was good, and our waitress was kind and took our orders promptly. I would definitely go back and order other items, but wouldn't order the soup again.

Pro: attentive waiters, moderate size parking lot. Con: limited seating, food. I found this restaurant through recommendations from Reddit sub that this is a very good Chinese restaurant. We came here on Sunday during lunch time and it was packed inside. We were lucky enough that one table was still open and were seated quickly. After we were seated multiple party who came after us had to grab a number ticket and wait outside until a table opened up. You are given a menu and you just circle the food you want. For appetizers, we ordered the pan fried pork pot sticker and spicy wonton. The pot sticker was very mid and the spicy wonton did pack some heat which was enjoyable. For the entree, I had the beef noodle soup Szechuan style. The noodle was also ok but needs more flavorful. The waiter check in quite frequently and refilled our water often which was goods. Overall, food was decent which was 3 star plus good staff service push to a 4 star rating overall.

Really lovely. The restaurant was rather buzzing on a late weekday morning. The staff all looked rather content. The mustard greens had a subtle sesame flavour and were great, the pig ears were a little chewy but paired well with the scallion, the beef shank had a subtle pleasant five-spice flavour, and the flat bean noodles with shredded chicken and cucumber salad, doused with sesame paste and a bit of horseradish was amazing. Left very full and content, and the prices were great.

This place offers delicious and affordable Taiwanese food! I have been to the VA location before and the MD location is quite consistent. I really enjoyed the beef dry noodles and I like how you can pick the noodle thickness. The cucumbers were a nice side since it adds a nice refreshing flavor while still being spicy and savory. Service was efficient and friendly.

Service was very good. Food wasn't as spicy as I'm used to at Szechuan restaurants, but they have chili sauce at the table.

First time at A & J-- what a great experience! Cute, small place that was packed with people for a Sunday lunch, yet very quick and attentive service. Food came out piping hot and everything was delicious. The veggie delight was a cold dish, packed with umami flavors which were enhanced by their zingy homemade chili oil. The potstickers were crispy on the outside, yet juicy and flavorful on the inside. The Szechuan dumplings were a tad oily, but still great. My favorite dish had to be the dan dan mian noodles-- rich from the sesame sauce that coated the homemade bouncy noodles... a great balance of flavors but I still preferred eating it with the chili oil. Would come again to try more items. Great portions for a great cost.

Came here for lunch at the recommendation of a friend and was not disappointed! The staff were welcoming and helpful. The restaurant has plenty of seating, but isn't huge. I took note of the adorable floral centerpieces in some tables. It feels homey! We ordered the spicy beef noodle soup, beef potstickers, and a panfried beef dumpling. Everything was incredible! The soup was comforting, the beef was tender, the noodles had the right amount of bite. My favorite was the pan fried dumpling. It was juicy and delicious! They don't have a ton of drink options, but they do have an assortment of sodas, tea, and water. I can't wait to come back and explore more of the menu.

Hmm a no frill no thrills restaurant. Plenty of seating. Pretty delicious noodle soup here. I love their clear broth beef noodle soup. Only downside is the beef tendons might make you choke because they are such big pieces. I almost aspirated on mine. I had to take it home to chop up into smaller pieces. Otherwise the food here is really worth the drive!

A&J is just incredible. I hadn't had it in a while, and was delighted to try it again. We loved the spicy beef noodle soup (not super spicy, very hearty) and the scallions pancakes. The soups are an especially perfect cozy winter dish .

Pretty good! My friend loves this place and took me, and she ordered all her favorites. She has fantastic taste but I didn't love everything. A lot felt a bit flat, and definitely more enjoyable with the chili oil and vinegar. Potstickers were doughy, filling good but tad bit dry. I hate to say it but their scallion pancakes may have been my favorite dish, fluffy crispy and delicious. The noodles were thick and chewy, perfect how I like them! Broth was nice and homey but nothing felt spectacular. Braised pork on rice was fantastic, especially with the pickled vegetable. Food came one by one, and one of our noodle dishes didn't come out until after they gave us the check. I just felt like the depth of flavor just wasn't there :/

Place is consistently excellent food wise and service wise! Staff is always friendly and dishes come out at warp speed. We love coming here for their small plates and noodle soups. At this visit we shared a scallion pancake and a veggie bun. I had a hot and sour noodle entree. My companion had Dan Dan noodles. The scallion pancake was chock full of scallions, the pancake was crispy and consisted of many thin layers. The veggie bun was a pan fried semi flat dumpling stuffed with egg, bean thread, and chives. Loved it as well. The hot and sour noodles were soupless. It was thin hand pulled noodles tossed in scallions, and a spicy and vinegary sauce. The noodles were perfect and the sauce coated them well. Prices are still great, still a cash only place.

A fun dining experience The dim sum style menu allows you to try a wide array of flavors and textures. The soup dumplings and noodle dishes were particularly good. The room is simple and comfortable. The staff is attentive.

The taste is pretty good. The party is horrible on high times. The one thing I can't get over is the price and size of the dishes compared to my experiences when I was little and even a couple of years ago. Shrinkflation is what comes to mind. One scallion pancake is 5.20 and one order of pan fried dumplings is 11.20. A bit shocked how small these dishes became. The taste is still solid, but I was still hungry after these dishes. They did improve on one thing: they accept credits cards - not American Express though. No cash discount so you don't have to worry anymore about having enough cash.

    Ask the Community - A & J Restaurant

Are there peanuts on the menu?

Yes, there are some dishes with peanuts.

Do they have a Chinese New Year menu?

    I don't know but I don't think so.

Are the Dan Dan noodles dairy free?

You better concern the sat. fats instead of dairy product. Oily on everything.

    Do they have cashew chicken?

No. This is northern Chinese cuisine. No General Tso chicken, no egg drop soup, no Americanized Chinese food.

Does this restaurant have lunch specials?

I don't think so. The menu is pretty cheap as it is.

Was feeling hangry because I had planned on stopping at Hard Times for a bowl of chili -and found out they were closed on Mondays. So, pretty much pulled a name out of a hat and would up at Chuan Tian Xia because, well, Szechuan cooking uses chiles, no? Yesssss! I ordered Signature Dumplings and a bowl of Beijing-style Beijing-style Zhajiang Noodles. The dumplings were outstanding: a mix of shrimp, pork, and chive that were plump, juicy, fragrant with the herbaceous flavor of chives. The accompanying sauce was not too sweet, not too hot, just right as a complement to the dumplings. Yowza. I was a happy camper... ...and then I dug into my noodles. Double yowza! Thick wheat noodles topped with a rich sauce made from (I think) fermented soybean paste and braised pork belly, garnished with cucumbers. The portion was way to big for me to eat after my flight, but I really, really enjoyed it (and the remaining dumplings) for lunch today. Did I say yowza? I'm an adventurous eater so the menu's less Americanized items were what I would have ordered given more time (like Maoxuewang: can you say "pig's tongue, spam, pork intestine, and beef tripe"? Protein is protein, baby!). Just means I need to come back, and I will, as quickly as I can.

We arrived right when they opened around 11 AM on a weekend and were seated immediately since it wasn't too busy yet. One thing to note is that the entire party needs to be present before being seated, which they enforce, but it helps keep things moving smoothly once you're inside. The service felt traditional and efficient, with attentive push carts circulating constantly, making it easy to see what's fresh and grab dishes as they come by. The staff were also accommodating with a baby seat, which made the visit comfortable for families. The steamed cart is always my favorite, and Far East does it well. Standouts for me were the shrimp rice crepe (silky and delicate), shrimp dumplings (har gow) with plump, juicy filling, and the steamed ribs, which were tender and flavorful. The chicken feet and tripe were also well prepared -- classic dim sum staples done right. I also loved the sticky rice, which was fragrant and satisfying, along with two must-order bakery items: the pineapple buns and egg tarts. Both were fresh and comforting, with the egg tarts having that perfect balance of flaky crust and smooth custard. Overall, Far East delivers a solid, traditional dim sum experience -- lively carts, reliable favorites, and a welcoming environment for groups and families. Great spot to gather, share dishes, and enjoy a relaxed weekend dim sum meal. Definitely glad to have seating back again.

Far East is a longtime staple in the DMV food scene, having been in operation since 1974. I was a few times a year patron leading up to 2019, and the last time I was there was in 2023. During my 2023 visit, the place was showing it's age with dingy matted carpeting and cramped dining room. Against my better judgement, I made the trek into Rockville to meet up with some folks for Sunday dim sum. IMHO, while it's true at one point, VA dim sum was inferior to it's MD siblings across the river, I'd say there are plenty of comparable if not BETTER places in VA. Our group was large (15), so we had to dine at two tables, as the largest table could only accomodate12. And note, for dim sum, Far East does not seat incomplete parties, so everyone arrive early. Also note, if you do choose to dine here, the parking lot is fairly small - but there is additional parking towards the back past the dumpsters. My recollection from 2023, was the selection of dishes was quite limited, and the 3-4 ladies who were pushing the steam carts, were peddling the same items over and over. That experience has not changed in 3 yrs. Upon sitting, our hungry group ordered dishes of shrimp dumplings (har gow), shumai, tofu rolls, rice rolls w/shrimp and beef, etc. Everything was fine; but nothing really stood out. The items were lukewarm, and cooled within a few minutes of being passed around the Lazy Susan. To me anyway, I found many of the dishes to be underseasoned...and when does a person characterize Chinese food as not being SALTY enough? The table chili oil was also quite bland. There was a good mix of fried chilis combined with oil, but there was just a hint of spice/heat with the predominant flavor being a heavy greasiness. Perhaps the worst part of the experience was the service. Even accepting that Chinese restaurants are notorious for "providing" legendary bad service, Far East exceeded that reputation. I understand that it was Sunday and the place was busy, but it took over 10 minutes for water and tea to arrive. And a few times, I literally had to get up from the table to flag down servers to refill empty water glasses and tea pots. Piles of dirty dishes kept piling up to the point where a few of us, took them to the bussers and food runners ourselves to make space for new dishes at the table. However, the worst incident was at the end when the servers and what I assume was the manager, rushed us to pay the bill since they needed the table, one of the staff was hurriedly cleaning the table, and spilled an entire glass of ice water on my friend's dress! He didn't even apologize, and when she went to complain to the manager, the only thing he said was, "it's only water, it will wash out." Wow! even by Chinese restaurant standards, that's bad!!! When the bill arrived, the total came out to roughly $35/person with tax and tip (gratuity is already included for larger parties, so be sure to double-check the bill). The meal was definitely NOT worth the $35, and for that amount, I could've had a much better and filling meal at Peter Chang Herndon - https://www.yelp.com/biz/peter-chang-herndon?osq=Peter+Chang This will undoubtedly be the last time I travel to Montgomery County for dim sum...and especially to Far East Restaurant.

A solid spot for sharing with a group, and I'd happily return to explore more of the menu. I really wanted to love this place. The soup dumplings are among the better ones in the area. While the wrappers aren't as thin or chewy as the very best, you can tell they're handmade, and I'll always appreciate that. I'd recommend sticking with the pork soup dumplings since they were rich, savory, and full of umami. The crab version unfortunately didn't have any noticeable crab flavor and tasted almost identical to the pork. The duck came in a generous portion and is a great choice for anyone who enjoys sweeter flavors. The watercress was fresh and plentiful, but it could have used much more garlic. We ended up adding the wonton chili oil and dipping it for extra flavor. The cucumber was delicious, but the portion was way too small. The bean curd was cooked well, though there wasn't enough pork for a dish that was supposed to feature it. The fish was another highlight with light spice, a crispy exterior, and perfectly cooked, tender meat. Overall, I'd definitely come back to try more dishes.
