if you're ever curious why you guys shut down here's 3 reasons 1. Never answers the phone no matter what time of day 2. No parking ! Like make some lines somewhere. 3. Never consistent hours. I only get out to this area a few times a year, but when I do I'll always have a meal or two at the Farmers Den. The place is a hangout for the locals, and the decor fits the area . The food is simple and prepared excellent every time I've been here. I love their omelettes, had the California the other day and the Veggie today. The country potatoes aren't over seasoned and taste great, even the toast is done to perfection every time. The waitstaff and kitchen help are super friendly. Food was average, attitude was horrific. Took forever to take our order, then didn't serve all of it, took forever to get us our check. When asked about the items that they didn't serve, we were told they were "just a part of the breakfast and it didn't matter". Sorry we were an inconvenience to your day. Funny thing is my family used to own the place from 1945ish till the 1990's when it was sold and converted to a restaurant only. I've heard amazing things about this place. Drove by it all the time. Finally had a day off with my hubby. Walked in & was greeted... thats awesome feeling. We sat at the counter & unfortunately had to see 1 of the prep cooks or runner eating back there then touching folks food. My omelet was browned like it was forgotten about. Biscuits & gravy were gross along with pancakes I can make better at home. Waitress super sweet girls. My only advice is to staff/owner whomever not eat where food is prepared & put hair in a tight ponytail. You have breaks for that. After you wash your hands don't touch hair & clothes . Over priced for what you get. My husband's poached eggs looked like quail eggs. My scrambled eggs just looked flat and no flavor. Sandwich lunches are extremely overpriced and the hamburgers aren't what they used to be. Disappointing. read more

This place is very simple, and charming, and the food is delicious! I was impressed with how perfectly my steak was cooked, and you can tell that their grill is well seasoned, as the flavors really showed. I loved my steak and eggs. My husband loved his chicken fried steak, and our daughter enjoyed her french toast. They're extra thick! Our server, Maria, had a great smile, a friendly demeanor, and she took the time to see that all our needs were met. The coffee kept coming too, which was great for us. My co-worker and I stayed in Modesto for training and had our training at the Stanislaus Training Facility off of Crows Landing. I think we ate at the Farmers Den restaurant 5 times, during our two week training. I think we had something different every time, whether it be their great daily specials or their great regular lunch menu items. The service is on point and I don't think my drink ever got lower than half way. Their food was outstanding. I loved their beer battered fries and their onion rings. Everything seems to be homemade which you can tell by the great quality of the food. I think for the drive of you are ever passing through the Modesto area from either the I-5 or the SR-99 it is worth the breakfast or lunch pit stop. Great service, outstanding fresh made food and a great local atmosphere. We will definitely be stopping here whenever we pass through. read more

It's time to go over the fundamentals. I arrived and it started out with a polite buzzer informing me that I could sit anywhere. They asked for my drink order - I just got some water. I noticed there was no engage. No "how are you doing today, not even a hello. I got a "have I taken your order yet? What'll you have? I ordered the western burger, which was waaaay over cooked. Where do I start? From the moment we walked in, we felt welcomed. Friendly place with fast home cooked food. I'm a tea drinker and as crazy as it sounds, I judge a place partly by their ice tea. This place had refreshing iced tea! (Even got a cup to go). Our party had eggs, ham, fruit, potatoes, pancakes, chicken fried steak, biscuits and gravy and even a chicken strip basket. This place, on a bustling agricultural road, is a great place to get a huge breakfast. I can't overemphasize huge. it's way too much food, in my opinion, but then I'm a petite woman and not a rancher or a farmer eating breakfast at 6am to last until lunch. The decor is not a charming as I was expecting for a down-home locals type of place. It's big and open and there isn't much to look at, the furniture is cheap, and the stuff on the walls is kind of thrown together. I was glad there was a story to read on the menu. The waitstaff was friendly and attentive. We came around 10am and it was empty but then the second breakfast rush came on while we were there. They keep the coffee mugs filled and hot but I didn't think it was very good. It needed cream and sugar. I neglected to notice that they'd brought a pitcher of milk and used the creamers instead and wondered why they brought them. Usually you only get creamers if there IS no milk. The answer is because these are the sugary, flavored creamers so someone must prefer them. I ordered an omelet with steak and onions. It was pretty fantastic though big enough for two meals. The hashbrowns were fine as was the toast. I was disappointed that they didn't serve homemade jam, in a place that probably grows more fruit than anywhere on earth. That was my overall impression: I wanted this to feel homemade and homey, but it really didn't to me. Still, the food is good and pretty cheap and we took the rest to go. It was just as good later. When we were about to leave, I noticed they had a "Little Bites" menu, from which you can order a regular sized breakfast. There's so much crap on these tables, I missed that.
