This morning we had breakfast with one of our relatives who lives nearby AJ's. It was our second time and one of many for our relative. We all agreed that AJ's was certainly one of the places to go in Turlock for a nice, non-chain restaurant breakfast. Great service (you WILL not run out of coffee or tea) with smiles both on the staff and patrons. The ambiance is cafe/grill on a Sunday morning and that was just fine with us. Our relative had the oatmeal, prepared and interesting way, my wife the Joe's scramble, and I the veggie omelet (can you tell I am seeing my doctor in the morning?) I scooped up a few of my wife's okra and found them delicious. We agreed that our meals were spot on, flavor was excellent, portions fair, and we enjoyed our time there. Kudos to AJ's! read more

After a busy morning, taking my mother-in-law to her doctor appointment, we went to have breakfast before we stop to pick up auntie Jossie she recommend us this place since we got there. It was a lot of parking and I as soon we enter we got seated. They have so many options for breakfast and everything is made from scratch. The food was delicious. Me and my husband decide to share or plates. The restaurant was really busy but they bring our food really fast. The quality of food has continued to decline for a while now. I find myself continuously being disappointed with this place. We are always seated and served our drinks quickly. It's all down hill after that. We see the waitress and hear the waitress making casual conversation with the other employees. Meanwhile, we are waiting 10-15 minutes to even have our order taken. The restaurant hardly has any customers but it still takes forever to receive our order. Most of the time we can see our food on the counter waiting. By the time our food arrives it's lukewarm. Went in this past weekend with my girlfriend and haven't been in a long time. Decided to give it another chance since it's been a few years. The joint is really dated and grimy. Just take a look at the salt pepper shakers or sugar holder. Looks like they haven't been cleaned in years. The menu is your average menu, but the prices are ridiculous for what they are serving. It's even over four dollars for a cup of coffee! The food was just OK but certainly not worth the price we paid. Our waitress dropped our food and never came back. We had to ask three times for coffee and we didn't receive our first refill until after we finished our meal. And then about 15 minutes later, someone came around our section with a pot of coffee and gave everyone coffee except us. So for over four dollars apiece we got a cup and a half of coffee. If a breakfast joint can't handle even refilling a cup of coffee then it doesn't earn my business back. I'm sorry, but this place isn't worth your time and can't recommend. read more

This is a solid breakfast diner. You get a good amount of food and the service is spot on. Yes, it could be updated. The bathrooms are in need of an upgrade but at least they keep them clean. I took my grandson in and he told me that his breakfast burrito is the best he has ever had. I like that they cook my hashbrowns extra crispy! For my money, this is the best breakfast place in town! The French toast is my favorite.

The food was great and huge portions!! Love the ambiance of a small mom & pops diner. However, only 3 stars for the waitress. Our waitress was the middle aged blonde maybe in her 40s. She was so straight face the entire time & when she put our food down on the table she was staring off somewhere across the restaurant didn't tell us to enjoy our food or ask if we needed anything else. She never came back to check on our table and when she dropped off the check she again didn't acknowledge us but put it on the table and walked away. No have a good day, no happy holidays, no thank you, nothing. As a fellow waitress of 10+ years, Don't do customer service if you don't like it. This is an amazing "mom and pop" diner. Sometimes you have to wait especially during peak hours but it is well worth the wait. Been going here a while now and haven't gotten a bad meal yet. This is our first time at AJ's! Our waitress was very kind and all the ladies serving coffee were attentive. I really liked the homey feeling to the potatoes. I personally really liked the size of the pancakes because I usually don't finish my food and I don't like taking food home, so this was just perfect!! Thank you! Great food and excellent service. Their pancakes are the best! The portion sizes are the perfect amount. I usually have left overs to take home too. Their orange juice is freshly squeezed. My friends had black coffees as their drinks. The waiters refilled their cups multiple times and kept bringing them more creamers. Everyone was over all satisfied with their food. The reason why my review is a three star is due to the fact that when we were leaving we saw one of the chefs using their phone In the grill/food preparation area. He also had a long beard that was not covered. This was a major concern for all three of us. Luckily we were leaving when we saw this happening otherwise we would considered to have chosen to go to another restaurant if we had seen this person prepare our food. read more

I'm so happy I found this gem! While passing through Turlock I was seeking a really good breakfast place and I can say I found another place that does breakfast right. They actually serve what looks to be a great lunch. However, I was craving the pancakes that I've seen pictures of. I had the eggs and ham breakfast. I opted for the country potatoes which were amazing! For my bread side I ordered those delicious pancakes ! Can honestly say that I don't remember the last time I went into a restaurant and had fresh squeezed Orange juice! They have it here!! My husband & I were in the area & decided to try AJ's from the pics we saw online. Service was great! I ordered a bowl of Chilli & salad with cornbread on the side delicious! Husband had the campfire scramble it was good but the bisquits & gravy were a little bland. I'm still giving it a 5 star because the waitress was fast & friendly. We had another waiter stop by a couple of times for a refill of coffee and someone else came by for a refill of water. Overpriced for the quantity of food. Be prepared to pay $2.00 surcharge for Anything you order that has bacon in the recipe. Including kids meals that comes with it 'included'. But todays host was unprofessional and looked as if she hated being there working or something in her life made her mad however, she should not take it out on patrons of that restaurant because they're lucky we go there. I don't know if I'll go there again anytime soon. But the worst part is when we asked to speak to a manager they said the manager would not be back till Sunday when I asked to speak to somebody in charge of the restaurant when the manager is gone, they said that nobody is there to help me however, they put somebody on the phone just to feel avoid. So to the owners of AJ café on gear Road in Turlock please reach out to me because I like to share my experience with you is very important. We all have bad days and we all have emotions however, we also have to wear a different hat for different situations and when you go to work in a business where you're dealing with customers you need to be polite you need to be welcoming and you need to smile because then if they don't the restaurant is uninviting and that can be contagious. It is evident don't have a meeting with your employees sit somewhere and look at their body language and ask yourself truly if you were a customer do you see some thing that can be improved in the way your employees behave and their demeanor and their body language? again please do not defend your restaurant and do not defend your employees. As I stated the food is great I love going there but I don't need to have somebody with a bad attitude moving their eyes around like I'm wasting their time when I'm trying to make choices for my food or when I go get my receiptand I try to pull the receipt from the machine because they were not attentive to me and then they teared off and throw it at me.
