This is like the North Shore Cousin of Russo's, only without the killer produce section. And, the huge cheese section. What it DOES have is a huge bakery section, and a massive wonderful Butcher's Counter. Man, I was kvelling at what they had, and the prices. Unfortunately, I was working, and couldn't buy much. Having meat sitting in my saddlebags all day, would not be a great idea. However, I did get a "French Long Loaf" right out of the oven. Heaven! I also got a couple of ginormous Chocolate Whoopie Pies. The cake was kind of dry, and chalky, but the filling was wonderful. Kind of like a combo of marshmallow fluff, and a mousse. Love Farmland! I live within walking distance and go mainly for the fresh produce and terrific meat counter. They always have some great cuts of fish, beef etc...and a lot of specialty items like marinated chicken or beef. One of my favorites is the sandwich steak, which is just perfect for homemade Philly Cheesesteaks! My daughter always gets me to stop at the bakery, and she loves the Italian cookies. The frozen Italian specialty desserts are great too (tiramisu, limoncello dessert, etc). They come in a glass which is great to reuse, and portioned individually which is nice. read more

What else to say about farmland than always the best!! I have been shopping for and buying food here for over 20 years and I am never disappointed. The deli and bakery are fabulous! I have known many people who have gotten catering trays for parties and they always taste great and look impressive. This week for the Super Bowl I finally got my own and couldn't have been more impressed. I ordered half trays based on the number of people that were coming and to my surprise upon pick up what I thought were full trays turned out to be the half ones I ordered. I've lived in Wakefield for 16 years and have been coming to The Farmland for as long as I can remember. I've never had anyone be rude to me. To the contrary, I've always found the staff helpful and pleasant. I'm a Yankee from old Yankee stock, so maybe my expectations are different. Sometimes, when I read Yelp reviews, I wonder if reviewers are looking for friendship more than service. I don't shop Farmland all the time. It's a small green grocer/deli/bakery, not a huge supermarket chain, so the prices can't compete. That said, sometimes I go there when I want to avoid spending too much. Because it's a small place, there's must less danger of breaking the bank on impulse items. I love their breads, but other than that (oh, and their frozen ravioli in the bakery section is good, too), I now mostly avoid the bakery. The items sometimes taste too much like everything else in the bakery case. I think the aroma of the Italian cookies permeates the other baked goods. The produce is fresh and generally good looking. The raw meats are excellent, as are the cold cuts. We've had good luck with the prepared foods and will sometimes order a tray or half tray of Chicken, Ziti and Broccoli, for family parties, when we don't want to cook. I wish that, in season, they would either stock more local produce, or if they already do, that they would highlight their local suppliers. Wakefield has a nice little Farmer's Market each Saturday, but I can't always get there, and like to buy local and in season, when I can. At the end of the day, Farmland isn't perfect, but I'd miss it like crazy if it was gone. read more

Attitude Adjustment in Aisle 5!! The only reason I give Farmland 2 stars is, well, how should I put this. I don't know if they actually beat the employees, or if they're indentured, or what - but everyone who works at this place seems miserable. And not just miserable, but at the deli, they're just plain jerks. I try not to just blame them, it must trickle down from the management, but it really ruins what is otherwise a fine little market. The hot foods are a good deal, even a great deal, (lamb dinner is tasty, chicken pot pie, well, it needs more chicken, but it's good too, and the calzones although not really traditionally Italian are more than enough to feed a few) and the bakery has a great selection of breads and pastries. The pizza isn't 'the best', but at 1.50 a slice, it's already tasting better, and the bisquick dough really fills you up. Prices in the rest of the of the store have typical small market mark up, and selection is limited. Would I go there if it wasn't super convenient? I still have a hard time reviewing this place even though the bakery merged with the grocery store years ago. Bakery: Top notch in the area. There's a wait most of the time but you will get a superior product from anywhere else in the area. From cookies to bread, you will not be disappointed. The price does leave some to be desired unfortunately. Deli: Their marinated meats are exceptional and are comparable to Dom's. I would take theirs over quality of cuts but give them a tie with seasoning/flavor. Farmlands prepared dinners are subpar and expensive but still are leaps and bounds better then their frozen counterparts. As a sub shop: Excellent for cold cuts. Recommend Italian subs. But any cooked parmesan or meat based sub, I'd turn to a local restaurant. read more

I tried Farmland for the first time yesterday for lunch. It was EXCELLENT!!! Sandwiches were made to order with fresh deli meats and delicious bread. My lunch companion and I both got sandwiches made fresh from the deli. The seafood salad was amazing....huge chunks of seafood and not drowned by mayo. The Italian Sub was also great, fresh cold cuts and stuffed to the max!!! Both of these for UNDER $10. The gentleman behind the counter was very accommodating, making sure we got everything we needed. The woman at the register was very nice and polite as well. I will return again to Farmland to try some of their other delicacies and to visit their bakery department (which I didn't get a chance to try this time). read more

Very disappointed, I've been going to Farmland since moving to Wakefield 15 yrs ago and this place was my go to for subs and quick grocery grabs but the last year I've been completely turned off. The last two times I got a sandwich the roll was stale, not simply well done but hard and dry the hole way through on the ends. I kind of let slide the first time because s**t happens but twice is a pattern. The last straw for me was yesterday when my wife stopped in to buy Quik strawberry milk powder for our 3yr old. Got it home, my daughter opened it and said it smelled funny, which it did, I looked at the date on the bottom of the container and it was best by July 2016 almost 2yrs past fresh. Was going to bring it back but in all honestly I just didn't want to deal with it so I dumped it down the sink and drove to Shaw's. I understand it's not a high volume item but still... Something changed here and that was my 3rd strike on freshness. Farmland is in the penalty box for our family now. I'm sure we'll be back at some point and hopefully they correct the course. I really don't want to completely throw in the towel on this place. read more

I have been coming here since I was in a baby carriage. There are great things about this place. I still come here every week for certain items. I think there cold cuts/ deli selection is wonderful. I buy all my chicken form the deli counter 99% of the time. It is never frozen so it tastes great. There hot and sweet pepper sausage are some of my favorites and are great to throw in a Sunday gravy. The ladies at the cash register have been there since I was a kid and are always very nice. The fresh cut fruit in the front by the registers is something I always buy. I always grab a small container for the ride home. The fruit is always ripe and tasty. The bakery has lovely prepared meals/soups and homemade pastas but their pastry is just ok. read more

Just ordered a turkey sub for lunch. The bread was stale, the turkey was incredibly salty and for $6.25, I will never order another sub from there. The quality of their food is just mediocre. Love this lil grocer! We have come many times for pastries or easy food for dinner. Decided for mother's day that niether myself or my mother in law should cook. So we ordered a medium garden salad, which was enormous! Eggplant parm whcih was 5 eggplants deep and stawberry shortcake (10 In). Holy moly was it all delish and fresh and mmm mmm good! Farmland provides a great selection of baked goods, deli counter service and enough fresh and pantry staple products to keep you going. They don't of course carry everything that a giant chain store may have but enough to keep you from having to drive to the big guys. Prior to Covid-19, we shopped here for bakery items or something we forgot at Market Basket. Since March, I've been doing all my weekly shopping at Farmland. The convenience is worth a little extra money. In addition, it's as if they're reading my mind and stocking new items: Multigrain Cheerios, big tub of cream cheese. Love their bread, meats good. Unless they really screw up, I will continue to shop at Farmland after the pandemic passes. I gave only 4 stars because a couple of the cashiers don't say thank you when I bag all my own groceries. The deli prices are cheaper here than the grocery store, but that's probably about it! The bakery is awesome. The scali, cakes, cookies, and cannolis are great, and somewhat reasonably priced! They will write messages on cakes, and even decorated one for me in 5 minutes when they didn't have any vanilla cakes in the case, but had them in the back. Great service! read more

People who don't know pastry think this place is heaven. People who knows good pastries or even Market Basket quality knows this place is just down right bad. Giulio's bakery and the owners of the Farmland should be ashamed of themselves for serving people this quality of food. I ordered a Tiramisu for $35 and although it looked pretty, a knife legit couldn't cut through it. It was SO dry, I was so embarrassed to serve this to my guests. I would have been better making a box Duncan Hines cake myself. I usually go to Mirabella's Bakery in Tewksbury but they were closed for the Labor Day weekend so I was forced to go to Wakefield due to lack of bakeries who carry Tiramisu cakes. They had everything from fruits & veggies to typical grocery store items, pre-packaged meals, an amazing looking deli & fish counter and even a bakery. They didn't have a large variety of everything but they did have many gourmet and hard to find brands. Quality has been spiraling lately. Apple pie was definitely past its freshness- crust was soft and mushy, filling dark and dry. Tiramisu was soggy and ladyfingers mushy- tasted old. This time it was a lobster tail- one bite and you knew it was bad- filling was like curdled milk and top with cherry gummy. Had to throw all 3 out. I went in to get lunch for myself and a co-worker. The french rolls looked amazing and fresh so I decided some chicken salad would be nice for lunch, Checked out and the woman behind the counter was a little odd, insinuated I should buy her some candy....strange. Got to my office, and the chicken salad was foul. I took 3 bites the first has plastic, the second had a gelatinous hunk of fat and the third had a big hard tendon. Got in my car and drove back to get something else. Got back in line to return it, behind a woman checking out. Cashier was very nice to her. Then asked the man waiting behind me if he was ready to check out. While ignoring me, who was next, I told him it was fine he could go, as he only had a soda, and she was very nice to him as well. By the time she got to me, she must have used up all her customer service skills. It was such a cold conversation and she was obviously annoyed with my presence. Tip to the owner, try hiring people who don't excel in making others feel uncomfortable and unwanted. Maybe then you'll get enough business to pay for an all meat chicken salad. I loved getting lunch at the Farmland when I worked in Wakefield. The biggest plus for me was that their deli sandwiches are available on bulkie rolls for like 3 bucks. The few times I bought produce there it was always good. I also enjoyed some of the Italian specialties that you just can't get everywhere, like really good homemade pesto, spinach bread, and arancini. OH! But my favorite thing of all are the chocolate-dipped biscotti in the bakery. I think I need to head over for a visit even though I have NO other reason to go to Wakefield now. read more

This small Italian market located downtown, parking and hours can be tight. The decor is a bit dated and is not the cleanest store. But is a better choice than a big chain store. The name Farmland is misleading as nothing is farm fresh ! Meats and Seafood: They have good quality beef and italian sausages , fresh seafood and a full deli. Nothing too special but just old fashion butcher. Produce: Better than a grocery store but not farm stand quality by any means. If you are looking for local or organic . Not here but fresh stuff yes. Grocery: They carry many staples and general goods along with italian items . The italian area by the bakery is better than the actual grocery items which are very overpriced.Some of the grocery items do have a thin layer of dust so watch out. Bakery: pastry,cookies and breads reasonable prices and ok quality. Overall a good place to shop can be expensive on for many items, service a little gruff and rude and cleanliness could improve. I think I'm going to be sick this morning, as the milk I poured over my cereal has gone by. I bought the milk yesterday (3/10) along with a brand of cereal I was not familiar with. I ate the whole bowl, thinking the flavor was off just because the cereal was new to me. Then I thought to try the milk solo, and looked on the label - sell by date was 3 days ago. For a store that prides itself on high quality food, I am very disappointed (and hopeful that I won't throw up). 11/2016: I should have updated this - shortly after this post, the manager contacted me and apologized. He said my post prompted them to improve their inventory management, and it won't happen again. He even gave me a store coupon to encourage me to shop there again. I have been going to Farmland for 10 years now, each time it gets worse. Today I ordered the large Prosciutto Mozzarella and tomatoe sub. Ordered many times over the years, This sub had three (3) very very thin slices of each prosciutto, mozzarella and tomatoe on a large sub for $8.50. Whats up Farmland? They use to make it with at least half a pound of proscuitto, and use the marinated mozzarella balls and grape tomatoes from the deli counter. Again whats up Farmland? Finally got a chance to stop at Farmland again today, and very happy that I did! They have an awesome selection of veggies. I picked up several nice looking tomatoes. The best part, and the reason I urge people to give them a chance, is the pre-made meal section. I bought a small bowl of homemade chicken soup. And this soup is legitimately homemade with chunks of chicken all for under $3. Delicious. My friend and I also picked up the lamb dinner. It is obscene how much lamb you get for under $6. There is no way you could go to the grocery store and pick up the same amount of lamb for anywhere near the price. And, this comes with several chunks of potato and cooked in a broth. It is so good. You just have to go in and check out their food section. All are homemade, reasonably priced, and there is no way you'll be disappointed!
