A very nice bakery attached to the Farmland grocery store (see separate review). The bakery has a nice selection of bread and rolls which are both fresh and excellent. The ricotta pie is traditional italian and very good. My frien has ordered birthday cakes and had very positive feedback. This store is going downhill - and I didn't think much of it a few years back. I go very rarely. Here's why....Over the summer I bought raspberries. When I got them home, I found that under the top layer, they were all rotten. Not one or two - the whole package. I called the store and they said to bring them back - and that they would check the other boxes. I went back the next day to find 6 boxes I opened were all rotten. So much for quality control. I also saw that their meat was being steadily dripped on by a faulty refrig system. Condensation was dripping onto the meat and collecting in the trays the meat was sitting in. I believe that's a violation of the health code. Fast forward a couple of months and I went in to buy ingredients for chicken salad and saw that they never fixed the refrigerated chests. Dirty water has been dripping on their meat for two months?!! OMG - seriously??!! Oh yuh, and the bag of Pepperidge Farm cookies I bought are in little pieces - 3 tiers - all broken and some of them smashed into crumbs. They need to get out of the food business. I have no explanation for why so many people like this place. I love shopping locally and do it whenever I can, but this place needs to go. read more

A friend bought 8 pieces of "Italian" pastry for us on the way to our home for dinner. I was mortified. Looked edible but I was seriously mistaken. There was a sliced pseudo paragini with white mystery glop on top that looked and tasted like imitation crisco. And to add insult to injury the cream was sour. The cannoli shell was stale and the ricotta flavorless. The sfoglitella was so old and stale that a sharp serrated knife could not permeate the layers. What a disgrace! So I just got through telling a coworker on Friday, how wonderful Farmland was, I say was. I ordered finger rolls Friday night and went to pick them up at 10am Saturday only to find they are in a brown paper bag, ok, I can deal with that. Then I say let me see the rolls, not sure why I asked, he tipped the bag and all the rolls were burnt. I say omg, they are burnt, he says, oh they will be ok they are dark. I say, not for my sandwiches I will not take burnt rolls. I go to the deli next because I'm thinking I'd love some of their fresh Turkey for a sandwich for lunch today. I order a half pound of Dietz and Watson deli turkey. The person I ordered from took some pre-sliced turkey from the fridge and then cut about 3 pieces more and weighed it. He handed that to me. I was appalled, I said, was the pre-sliced turkey your giving me sliced today? He assured me yes. I should have told him to keep it and give me new turkey but I didn't. I bought the turkey only to take it home and find the edges were all dry and I had to pull it off and discard it. What has happened to Farmland. oh my, so disappointed in my recent trip. read more

Love this place. Can always depend on the Produce Department to have the freshest selections. Deli is well stocked with fresh meats. They also have prepared meals which are my favorites. The Bakery Department is to die for. It is a small store. My favorites are the scali bread and biscotti. They may not have as large a selection of grocery items as the large stores but you can,t beat their bakery, deli and produce departments. read more

Ahhh Farmland.(sigh) It had been great, although recently it has very apparently succumb to both the greed of expansion(a son taking over the shop) and the failing economy. Although you're likely to go into Farmland at any time of day and find a full parking lot and customers roaming the aisles. You will also find that the tomatoes have fruit flies buzzing, and they're dry inside. The green, red, and orange peppers are wilting. The onions are ragged, along with the garlic having green stems throughout and the milk/OJ is within a week of expiration, etc. Everything else in the produce section also falls in line with cheap supply. The meat and fish department hasn't seemed to see the signs of desperation yet, although if I need a last minute lb of ground beef, I'll be sure to keep an eye/nose on my purchase. The bakery you can't really complain about... Top notch bread, pastry, fresh french rolls, cakes, etc. However, for my money I'll now travel a short distance to the butchery in Stoneham or the far superior stand in Reading. I hope the owner's son sees the bigger picture, parts with his silly benz and focuses on the future of his legacy! Best of luck to a Wakefield icon! read more

I had another nice visit to Farmland and the deli today. The place always feels like home. Then again I have been going there since the mid 80's. The counter staff greet me by name like many other regulars. I often get the house marinade tips or the lemon pepper chicken. The calzones are great too. Many nice Italian specialties. read more

Farmland gets four stars from me but only cause of it's cost. A little bit pricey but worth it in the end. Their meats an produce are top notch and although usually busy they get the line moving with a quickness. Have been going to farmland for years and the last several times have been very disappointed. Their bakery items are old and sold that way, even though you are paying full price. This is not how you keep loyal customers, I understand that some bakeries will put out day old pastry and sell them, but the ones that I purchased were really steal, and the girl who put them in the box never even used any paper to keep them from going into each other. read more

The food here is good but the customer service is bad bad bad. Beyond bad...worse than bad. The people working behind the deli counter are the rudest and most unpleasant folks - especially the older 50's-something guy. Geez...I have never seem him with anything less than a scowl on his face and his personality matches it. Try asking him a question and you're lucky if he doesn't bite your head off. The rest are just as rude and unpleasant. The owner of this place must treat his employees terribly for them to be so miserable, or maybe he doesn't care how his employees treat paying customers? Either way, it just isn't worth the poor customer service and the discomfort I feel whenever I walk into this store. Farmland - you're only getting 2 stars because your food is one star better than your HORRIFIC customer service. I've lived in the area for 5 years and go to Farmland all the time - for lunch, for bakery goods, for Italian specialties, etc. Each time the food is pretty good but today the deplorable customer service pushed me far enough over the top to write this review and think twice about returning once and for all. Arrived at the deli counter and ordered a fresh mozzarella, tomato, prosciutto sandwich. The sandwich I ordered today had literally 2 PIECES of prosciutto in it. Seriously? For $8 I should be able to taste the meat...very disappointing. The guys behind the deli/meat counter are downright rude every single time I go. They don't smile, they don't acknowledge you with more than a head nod and then they seem annoyed when you order more than one thing. The one today (tall, 40's/50's, white) literally made my blood boil because of the scowl on his face. I took my sandwich, ordered some sides that I needed and made my way to the register. There I was (NOT) greeted by a young boy who was definitely high school age and had absolutely no personality. He rang my things up, turned to me and stared, waiting for me to pay. I swiped my card, took my bag and the kid did not say ONE word. No hello, thank you, goodbye... Sorry to say that this is not the exception to the rule at this place and that's why I'm hoping the management of this place is reading this and does something about it. I will start thinking twice about going here so often, they frustrated me and it's not worth it to be pissed off over a shopping experience. read more

Hopefully this will be the first and only yelp review I will ever write. To be honest I love this place and eat lunch from here three times a week. I have been going here for 15 years. However I didn't appreciate one of the workers being rude to me about a miscommunication in my order. It seemed as though he wanted to make sure I knew that I made a mistake ordering instead of it being his fault. I can get over that people have bad days. Then as I am halfway through eating my lunch I take a bite and cannot chew through whatever it is I am eating. Come to find out it is a piece of a thick paper bag with rope ties through it. Tried some chicken parm, meatballs, penne pasta this past weekend, considering for upcoming family party. The chicken parm was not very good( coating separating from chicken). The sauce was like tomato soup, the meatballs were ok. I had heard a lot of good things about this place. Very disappointed. The help was very helpful and friendly. Alright so this place doesn't have it all but it definitely is a cute little spot that is half-grocery store / half specialty Italian grocer and bakery. The produce section has great prices and a decent selection but the main grocery is a bit lacking in variety. I haven't tried any of the pre-made or bakery goods yet but I was impressed to see a good selection of Italian specialties such as ricotta pie, fresh pasta (not the huge grocery store packaged crap), and champagne cookies (mmm). Overall I'm pleased... if I want a regular grocery store there are 3 within a mile down the street but Farmland has a great selection of specialty items that you may not find anywhere else closeby that are worth a try. read more

The food is great, but if you place a catering order, make sure that you have a Plan B. On two seperate occassions, I've placed orders for calzones, and when I went to pick them up, they told me my order wouldn't be ready for a couple more hours. What is the point of taking and confirming an order if you are not going to give me what I want? There food and deli is good, but just know, they are not reliable for catering orders. read more

I go here for lunch quite often. They have a full deli that you can use to create your own sub, plus cheap pizza. I just had the best tuna salad sub in years. The proportions are perfect instead of overflowing with tuna. Just made my day. read more

The most amazing place. I buy all my fruits, veggies and meats there. Much better value than the grocery store. The produce lasts longer than anything you buy in a regular grocery. The meat prices are fair & of the highest quality. Ground sirloin is actually ground on site. No worries about e-coli. Custom orders are no problem. Their store-made overn roasted turkey & roast beef are superior. Farmland can sell only the freshest meats, coldcuts, fruit & veggies because of their large catering and store-made food sales. Nothing goes bad, it goes into the cooking instead. They even have a delivery service. read more

From the moment you walk in you are hit with a smell of cheese or spoiled something. It looks very dirty inside and the food leaves much to be desired, even the cold cuts are awful. We get a lot of calzones there and they are delicious EXCEPT the steak and cheese. It has become very gritty, I think they are buying a lesser cut of steak. It was like eating pieces of fat surrounded by meat. Don't say you haven't been warned. Order any other flavor of calzone except the steak and cheese. read more

My family and myself have been customers of the farmland for probably a good 20+ years. I have never seen a slouch in quality from produce to meats to their prepared items! Produce is picked up fresh everyday (how do i know this? my boyfriends family owns a produce company and sees their truck in the market pretty much Everyday!) Their bakery is always wonderful I have received compliments on where I pick up my cakes everytime by people who in fact own a renown bakery in the Boston Area. Their marinated steak tips absolutely to die for. Tender and delicious, their lemon peppered chicken also an excellent and balanced choice! If you're looking for something different grab their stuffed pork loin a great choice for the fall and winter dinners! Calzones? Yup amazing chicken parm is always a home run for parties. If you have yet to stop into the farmland make sure you do! I can guarantee you won't be disappointed! Keep up the amazing work farmland! read more

This place is a joke. This is my first time purchasing anything from Farmland. I have a large family and friends that live in the Wakefield area who frequently go to the store. I been in search of a good bakery since the La Contessa bakery in Somerville closed. I recently order a graduation cake at Farmland, a double sheet to feed some 70 people. I met with the bakery dept five days prior to me picking up the cake. I gave them the college emblem that I wanted on the cake and we discussed the cake decorating (flower arrangement) that would dress the cake. I was told it would be ready Sunday morning any time after 8:00AM. I paid the $85.00 in advance. I told them a friend would be picking it up. My friend showed up to pick up the cake at 9:30AM Sunday morning. NO CAKE, they never made it. They asked if I still wanted it. My friend called and I told him I needed a cake, there was going to be eighty people at the party and we needed it. They made the cake, after waiting over an hour; my friend took the cake to the party in the lakes region of NH. When we got the cake we couldn't believe it. They had put the college emblem upside down on the cake. The flowers that were put on the cake, (only a few) were from somebody who NEVER ever decorated a cake before. My wife looked at it and told me to throw it away; she did not want to put it out. I was sort of stuck at this point so I put it out and told everybody it was made by the village idiot. My brother-in-law who recommended Farmland apologized. The only reason why I took the time to write this email was that I called Farmland and spoke to the woman in the main office she told me someone would get back to me. NOBODY had the courtesy to ever call me back. That is a DISGRACE and I, nor will my family and friends ever do business with Farmland again. However, I still am looking for a good Italian bakery to go to, if anybody knows one, leave the name on this website, it will not just help me but many people in that area. Brian S. read more
