I visited Fat Cap a second time. Service was friendlier, but I am goi g to stay at 3 stars. I orderded a lb of ribs, 1/2 lb of tips and potato salad. Abour half mu ribs were very very dry and charred. The rib tips could have used another hour in the smoker and the porato salad was diffeeent...no celery and while it was good....it was definitely not the potato salad I experienced the first time. I did take home a cup of each sauce and 3 of them were outstanding. The KC bbq was what most people are faniliae with around here...sweet...tomato based w a little smokiness. The N Carolina was a mustardy and vinegary spicy delight. Fat cap doesnt hold back on flavor here. The south carolina sauce was orange and more chili vinegary and my least favorite. So 3 stars again Fat Cap...you have yet to wow me. read more

Stopped here today for a early dinner. Wanted the brisket but it was sold out so I got the pork ribs and pickled veggies. Majorly disappointed. The ribs were tough as heck. They clearly needed another couple hours in the smoker. Maybe it's personal preference but I like my ribs damn near fall off the bone tender. I had to gnaw on them extensively and even then all told I probably left 1/8 lb on the bone I couldn't get off. The rub they use is very tasty but the toughness over shadowed everything. Pickled veggies were very tasty and refreshing change in side options. However they were 60-70% and I'm not a big fan of celery so this was disappointing. The cauliflower, carrots, red pepper, and onions that I did have were delicious. My meal with a drink cost me $26 dollars. Pricey for sure but good bbq is usually worth it. Given the toughness of the ribs this was definitely not worth what I paid. I had very high hopes given the reputation of Prized Pig. As you can see in my photo a lot of meat was left on the bone. read more

We saw an ad about Fat Cap's on TV and knew we had to try it out by what we saw! It didn't disappoint one bit! The food at Fat Cap's is truly amazing! We had the pulled pork sandwiches and a couple of sides. The pulled pork was smoky and mouth watering. The sides were a perfect complement to the meal. The service is quick and responsive and the owner is very personable! We will definitely be going back for more in the future! read more

In town for baseball tourney and wanted something better than chain or fast food. I will say, Fat Cap was as my wife said, "unbelievably good ". The brisket may have been the best I've had. The barbecue here is just as good, if not better than anything you can find down in Texas. My favorite so far is the brisket which is always tender, juicy, smoky, and has a nice layer of bark. When you go to order, the cooked meats are on display and you tell the chef what you would like. The chef carves and weighs the meat right in front of you. You can even specify where you would like the cut. If you have had good BBQ before then you will instantly recognize the quality of meat that is served here. read more

Fat Cap! My one true love! What happened to you?!? And what the hell is with good bbq in this area? Did a witch put a curse on it? Once a jewel in the crown of the South Bend culinary scene, Fat Cap had the best bbq for miles. On a recent visit, though, I felt like I had stepped into the Upside Down. Brisket had obviously been frozen, the ribs were dry to the bone, and the chicken wasn't much better. Even the coleslaw was bitter! When they first opened, the line went out the door, and for good reason, but on my last visit there wasn't a single soul in sight. I used to tell everyone to go here, but my heart is now broken. Excellent Smoked Meats the smoked chicken wings were excellent also. New owners and they are very nice. They're always iwilling to help you out if you need anything. Yes they have tables in there. Three strikes you're out!!!!! FC had some of the best bbq in SBend b4 cv19. Evidently the owner has lost all his key people to start their own places in town, some are pretty good, and I have tried three times to get fresh bbq and three times have received dried out, overcooked, yesterday's leftovers. Nothing is fresh anymore and they must be selling instead of throwing away yesteradys meat. You know what the food poisoning bbq burps are? You burp bad bbq for the next 8 hrs after eating it ....... Three times I have tried and every time its been horrible and dried out like yesterday's leftovers. They either need to cook less or sell more and right now they arent selling much at all. Went for lunch the other day and it was fantastic! There were a lot of options including tips, pork belly, chicken and I had the spare ribs. They can do sandwiches and everything is available by the 1/2 lb. (they weigh it out in front of you and usually heap way more than a 1/2 lb.) They give it to you without sauce so you can choose one of their 4-5 different sauces (North Carolina, South Carolina, spicy, etc) and they have pretty decent sides. I got the max&cheese which was good. The only thing I wish they had on the menu that they don't: French fries. This place was very clean, the staff was friendly and the prices are very reasonable. Saturday afternoon stopped by Fat Caps for the drive up. Very friendly and helpful sales person. We talked about the menu in great detail. Ordered a pound of beef brisket, very robust smoke flavoring and the meat melted in your mouth. Ordered a half pound of the pork belly, incredibly juicy with a great Smokey taste. Good meat, Mediocre sauces Honestly, I could go there, get the pulled pork, and not need to get any BBQ sauce. That being said, I am a "dipper" and love to use sauces. The BBQ sauces aren't quite my cup of tea- I like thicker, sweet sauces. I found that if I mix the Kansas City with South Carolina, I get a decent sauce together. The side dishes are pretty good- I love the baked beans. The mac&cheese was a little bland, but not terrible. Overall, if you need some smoked meat, give the place a shot. Everything was delicious. We tried the north and South Carolina sauces and the Kansas City. All were very good. Stopped in a little after "lunch". Easy access from the turnpike. Quick and friendly service upon arrival. I got the rib tips and brisket. I should have requested lean cut as that is my preference, but the cut I was given was 50% straight fat. The editable part of the brisket had almost no smoke flavor, hard pass for $14. The rib tips on the other hand were bursting with flavor and worth getting off the highway for. Tried the elote corn and Mac and cheese and both were quality but not really unique. Also, something to note: The typical barbeque place is super messy, but here, it's actually very clean. I got the pork belly, brisket, chicken, rib tips, and a side of mac & cheese. The pork belly was extremely tender, and also had a lot of smokey flavor. The brisket was okay. It also had good smokey flavor but wasn't as moist as I would like it. The chicken was decent as well. The skin had a good crunch and was seasoned well. The rib tips were my second favorite. They were tender, and bite size. The mac and cheese wasn't too soggy, and very creamy.
