This might be the best brisket in town because it's the only brisket in town. The meat portion was a decent serving but they're not generous with their sides. Baked beans and potato salad, standard, nothing to write home about. Brisket was lean and tender but unfortunately, unbeknownst to me, it comes smoothed in the bbq sauce of your choosing. I'd rather have it on the side and not cover the flavor, or lack of, of the meat. Meat is served on butcher paper on a tray which bleeds through the paper and makes you wonder how clean your tray is. I got the nachos and they were alright. The pork was good though. The prices are high, but it's BBQ. Large portions only problem I had was I assume the owner got flustered with our large group. We are trying to find a new lunch spot for sundays. None of us have been to this spot yet (that I'm aware) so the menu was new to us. There was a bit confusion going on regarding who ordered what plate. The guy behind the counter (assuming owner) said to us " figure it out" upon this confusion. I have been hearing about northside for MONTHS now. My roommates are from La Porte and they rave about this place on the daily. I loved the atmosphere. Super small, old style place with checkered table cloths, old pictures on the wall, and paper plates and utensils. The owner was super nice, told me I HAD to come back and try the brisket... I'm planning on it. I got the pulled pork dinner with cheese fries and sweet BBQ and hot BBQ. It was delicious! The cheese sauce was alright, good enough to order again but could've been more flavorful. It all cost about 12 dollars. So we stayed at Pine Lake in LaPorte, IN for the weekend. My wife and I sell our own BBQ sauces and rubs online, compete in competitions and have started some catering. We wanted to see what LaPorte had to offer for nearby BBQ joints. Northside BBQ was across from the lake and others we talked to said to give it a try. Just walking in you could smell that awesome smell of smoked meats. Walk up counter style ordering and the decor was old but had that BBQ restaurant rustic feel. If you are looking for some big BBQ chain with a full bar and TV's on every wall, then this is NOT your place. Real deal BBQ doesn't come with distractions from the food itself. My wife ordered the Tennessee Tater with spicy BBQ sauce and I had the pulled pork sandwich with sweet BBQ sauce. Sauce review: My wife found the spicy not to be that hot so she asked for a side of the "hot" bbq sauce. It is much more a Carolina style vinegar based sauce and was much spicier than the "spicy". The sweet sauce was definitely sweet. Could use maybe a tad more bite to it. On to the food review.... The Tennessee Tater is a baked potato covered in pulled pork, bacon, cheese, BBQ sauce and sour cream. She loved it! The marriage of all of those toppings just explodes that potato into a huge pile of BBQ deliciousness. As mentioned above, she did change up to go with the "hot" BBQ sauce which was more to her liking. I had the pulled pork sandwich with cheese fries. The cheese fries were definitely cheesy. The pork was just a tad dry but the sauce slathered that up so it wasn't that bad. Mixing the pork with the cheese fries was a match made in heaven as well. The meat had a good smoke flavor and was fresh so you could tell that it didn't just sit in a fridge for days. Overall, it was a good BBQ joint. A surprise to find it in LaPorte, IN of all places. I would recommend this to anyone who visits the lake and is looking for some down home BBQ. read more

I've been to this location several times, good ribs and probably the best brisket this north of the Ohio River. The reason I give this place 3 stars is because of the decor. I'm not sure what they're going for with this place. It has a shitty diner feel, but with no effort. I've been to plenty of hole in the wall BBQ places all over the south. This is definitely the kind of place that pays more attention to how their food tastes than their appearance.....which I appreciate. :) There are so many places that draw you in from the outside and dazzle you with all the bells and whistles on the inside, but then their food tastes....well....meh. This is not the case at Northside BBQ. Everything is so YUMMY!!!! I've had the pulled pork (my fav), baked beans (very unique and awesome), ribs, brisket, chicken, and fries (seasoned very well). The food is much more impressive than the atmosphere, however. But that's ok with me. :) It kinda just feels like you're hanging out at someone's house eating BBQ and there's nothing wrong with that! It's just one room with a bunch of tables and chairs. And the counter displays many classic White Sox baseball cards, which is totally a plus. And they have big pitchers of lemonade and tea up by the pop dispenser on the counter so you can make your own Arnold Palmer (half lemonade, half tea....yeah!!) :) Northside BBQ is awesome! If you are going here for the ambiance, atmosphere, fine dining experience, forget about it. You will be sadly disappointed. if you are looking for a freaking kick-ass meal then this place is right up your alley. actually my only complaint about the whole experience was that the dining room was as cold as a meat locker. Once i started eating, this was quickly forgiven. I ordered a 1/2 slab of ribs with sweet BBQ sauce. The ribs had an outstanding smoky flavor and just fell off of the bone. For sweet sauce, it was not overpoweringly sweet but was perfectly balanced. You received two sides with your meal and I ordered pea salad and baked beans. Both items complemented my meal perfectly. We started out with an order of nachos. They did not give you nacho chips but they gave you deep fried potato slices covered with pork, cheese, sour cream and jalapeños. It was a real treat. I went back here last night for the first time in over a year, not because the food was bad, but because the opportunity hadn't arised. After last night's dinner, I wish opportunity had just kept its knocking to itself. I ordered rib tips with spicy sauce (a change from previous selections that included Carolina and other flavors aside from hot, spicy, and sweet) and when I got them, the meat was overcooked and soggy with the cartilage that I can usually separate from my meat so soft and gooey that I ended up eating more than I could pull out. There were also no bones at all. I may be spoiled from places in Lake County, but these were no rib tips. The sauce tasted like ketchup, brown sugar, and cayenne pepper. My wife's sweet sauce was just the same with only slightly less pepper. The pulled pork had no flavor to it at all except the taste of overcooked. This place was wonderful before, but they've lost the passion and soul a good bbq place needs. I say make the drive to somewhere else if you really want some good bbq. read more

This place gives new meaning to the phrase no frills. Plates, silverware, fresh air--all of it unnecessary extras to these guys. The dinner I ordered was nothing more than a pile of meat and fries slapped on a cafeteria tray. The sparsely furnished room housed not only the modest seating area but also the meat roaster/smoker resulting a dense haze of wood smoke that choked the entire restaurant. There really wasn't much about this place that you can speak positively about. If you're gonna go no-frills with your dining experience, you had better have amazing BBQ. Unfortunately, Northside fell short on this count as well. The pulled pork that I ordered was nothing to write home about. It was tender and smokey (obviously) but it had this weird, soggy consistency. Their sides were a big disappointment. The fries were over-cooked edging toward burnt, and the beans tasted like something out of a can. I guess it was fine but there is so much better BBQ out there. (Later a friend told me that their beef is way better than their pork. So, a redo visit may be in order.) This restaurant is the gift that keeps on giving too. I'll probably end up having to dry clean my coat because of the smokey smell. So, if you have to have some BBQ in a pinch and Northside is your best option, I suggest you leave your church clothes at home. read more

My family and I were visiting Laporte Indiana for the Fourth of July weekend when we stumbled upon this restaurant. My aunt was looking for some really good barbecue for dinner so she called to place an order not realizing that it was close to their closing time. So she ordered everything that looks good on their menu. We ordered the ribs, brisket, baked beans, potato salad and Polish dogs. The food looked like he had just thrown it all in the box without a care in the world. It was cold, and did not look appeasing at all. But we decided to eat it anyway. The potato salad we did not eat because it looked like leftovers. The baked beans were watery. The ribs were quite tasty and so was the brisket. I realize the owner may have had plans for the holiday of some sort but also when people are wanting to support your business, you should present it nicely.
