I wanted gelato on our last full day in Rome, and after a quick search, we ended up at Fatamorgana on Villa della Croce, near the Spanish Steps. The shop was small and welcoming, and we were about the only customers on a cool November afternoon. Service was fast and friendly, and there was ample seating.
The gelato was superb, with a light, lush, creamy texture. I got three flavors in a cup, and they were all delicious. The fior di latte was cool and classic, and went well with the other flavors, which were both stronger. The Seadas was lightly savory, Sardinian pecorino cheese laced with chestnut honey and orange peel. The basil, walnuts, and honey was another winner, green and herbal, but with all the pleasures of a good sweet scoop of ice cream. My husband got a cup of coffee gelato, and this was also excellent.
Fatamorgana has seven locations in Rome and, as luck would have it, two in the United States, both within ten miles of my house in Los Angeles. I don't usually like eating at places abroad that I can easily hit back home, but I'm not mad about this one. I look forward to paying triple for another taste of that wonderful gelato. read more
