Went yesterday and got the OG chicken sandwich and mashed potatoes. Absolutely fantastic. Great breading and the chicken was tender and moist. The mashed potatoes were excellent as well (which is not always a given). I decided to pick up some mac and cheese to go so I could have a midnight snack if I wanted. I did have it last night and even reheated it was the best mac and cheese I've had in a long long long time. Super cheesy and the breading on that really added to it. Still threw some hot sauce and black pepper on it due to the nature of mac and cheese. I can't recommend it enough and if you like southern comfort food, this is the place in town to go. read more

Fatbird is a nice place we happened to swing around while in the area. We had the vinegar chicken which was amazing, laminated biscuits and mac and cheese amazing for sides. Nashville hot chicken was good but I think it was too spicy for me. So spicy I really couldn't taste anything else. My husband had the seafood boil and wasn't given a lot to open with due to the crawfish being small. Very very good caramel cake for dessert. Dinner last night here with a group of four work colleagues. That birds has not been opened but a few months, but they seem to have their act together. Pretty good southern flair menu, with some Cajun dishes. Decent drink menu but not overly extensive. They have some good appetizers including Nashville hot wings and a Vandalia onion dipping sauce with some specialty chips they buy. I will say we did enjoy the appetizers. Four entrées three of us got the jambalaya and the fourth got the Cuban sandwich. The jambalaya was definitely good and not very spicy. I've had jambalaya several places and usually it's got a little bit of a kick to it. This one was more of a tomato base but still had good flavor. They have a few other items on the menu as well that I would like to try. They do the QR code reader for the menu and the tables are spaced out very well. Friendly staff and they even sang Happy birthday from the bar to one of our colleagues since he was celebrating his birthday. We had to sort of Heggemann just a little bit to sing as they don't normally do that. Fun atmosphere and we had a good time. I would come back. read more

One of the best fried chicken sandwiches and biscuit I've ever tasted. I got carry out but the restaurant was very clean, orderly and well decorated . The order was ready promptly. Service is amazing, food is great. I personally love the grilled wings. They taste like summer. Gotta try the deviled eggs while you're there too. I Love that they have a full bar and up to the task of making any drink you would like. To start the service here was absolutely excellent. They had a QR menu which I like. The menu isn't convenient to navigate however. The menu is very alcohol heavy, not a whole lot of food options. No vegetarian entrees. Last thing I will say about the menu is that it's very wordy for what they're offering. Now about the food, this place labels as a southern restaurant. One of the most important southern soul foods is MacNCheese. My girlfriend and I agreed that it was the worst Mac n cheese that we've had in recent memory. The mashed potatoes were garlicky and buttery and didn't have any lumps, but they desperately needed more seasoning. Lastly, the chicken sandwich was pretty good and I really liked the wine bottle full of water instead of a bowling alley style pitcher. Prices weren't awful and pretty standard with DTSB. read more

I travel fairly frequently and when I do, I try to make it a point to avoid chain restaurants and I rarely eat at the same place twice. I had seen Fatbird on previous trips to South Bend but had never eaten there. That was a mistake. This little gem has some of the most hearty, feel good comfort food I've had in my travels. In fact, I made an exception of this place and ate there twice. The first day I had the fish sandwich. The second time I brought my mother for dinner. She had the red beans and rice which was out of this world. I had the fried chicken, which was very succulent and tender. The staff was very friendly as well both times. And for the whisky drinkers out there, the selection was pretty generous. I will be back again this summer. read more

I had dinner here for the first time this Wednesday night for a friend's birthday, the food was very good, however upon getting the receipt it was a bit higher than expected. Because it was a celebration I did not want to make too much of it, but upon returning home I realized why it was so expensive -- they CHARGED me for the sides that were INCLUDED in our entrees. Essentially they double charged me for 3 sides. This was not a big deal I though I would just call and let them know the error so I called and left a voicemail explaining the situation. I have not received a call back, no outreach, nothing. Buyer beware, you will be charged twice and included does not mean what you think it means. We will not return. read more

My husband and I tried this place visiting South Bend. We had the grilled wings, red beans and rice with the sides of Mac and cheese, potato salad and maque choux. Bummed. My chicken sandwich was an entire slab of fat. Hardly any lean meat. I understand some people don't mind the fat, and usually I just pick around it, but I'd say I got about 2 ok bites before having to completely cut apart the breast. The mac n cheese side (campanelle and cheese) was highly rated, but it was disappointing. It didn't have a description on the menu so I was taken back when it had a fishy flavor. I'm still not sure if it did have any fish in it. It had small chunks of something red... The sandwich would have been great if it was a better cut of chicken, so I'll give this place more credit than my bad experience. Cool atmosphere and bar. Many drink options. read more

if i could i would give this place a zero star rating. I would not even consider this establishment a restaurant. Honesty McDonalds is 10000 times better. At least going to mcdoanlds you will know your food is not expired. Fat bird likes to serve their customers with expired rice. Especially the manager Lindsey she is so rude and gives people dirty side eyes when they ask to use the restroom. I cannot wait to call the health department as well as the department of food and consumer safety. I think it is very unprofessional to serve food you willingly know is expired as well as have your staff eat it. Do better fat bird. read more

I was asked to try this place by a friend. I took my wife and our best friends to try it out! I love fired chicken so I thought, cool, I. Going to try the house chicken! Upon arrival we were greeted well, sat at a nice table, where the waitress walked up and gave us waters, she seemed nervous, we placed drink orders, we ordered apps, well we tried, I wanted to try the fried okra, turns out there were out, dang it! Ok I'll look past it and or the deviled eggs and our friends ordered the special chips and dip. Apps came quick, the eggs tasted like they had sat in the refrigerator for way too long and the eggs we're rubbery, the stuffing was good. The "chips" were nothing but bbq crunchers tossed in some spicy seasoning and swerved with what tasted like ranch, French onion dip and Lipton onion soup mix with shredded onions. So nothing special on the apps. I ordered the fried chicken, it came out quickly which is weird, because chicken takes about 20 mins to cook, so it was not fresh, the skin was soggy and had no flavor whatsoever, my wife ordered the vinegar chicken, it came out drenched in some sort of spicy sauce, and it tasted like vinegar, I mean I guess it's supposed to, but not that overwhelming right? The green beans were so spicy I couldn't eat them, they tasted like sour kraut. All in all two stars because the service was good and the place was clean, but food was fair!Probably will not return. read more

I also let the waitress pick both my drinks and she did a great job. It was such a cool place and nice environment. This is the place to go if you want comfort food that will fill you up! Great spot. Found out about Fatbird from their sister restaurant, Propaganda Pizza. Ordered several items and everything was delicious. Chicken salad sangwich, Nashville chicken, deviled eggs, and Nashville fried chicken sand. Sides were campanelle and cheese, green beans, and cole slaw. Literally everything on this spread was dynamite. All house made and all very tasty. Service was friendly and perfectly attentive. If I had to list a negative, it would be that the a/c was blowing warm. Would have been much more uncomfortable with a full restaurant, but we dined in between lunch and dinner. read more

I really wanted to like this place. The staff were very warm and friendly and it has a cute, cool atmosphere but that's where the good stuff ends. I love hush puppies and a good fried chicken sandwich so that's what I ordered. The hush puppies were served hot but cooled down quickly (in part to being served on top of a bed of cold coleslaw) and the texture inside was a little mushy. Flavor was pretty good. My husband and I both had chicken sandwiches that were not hot, not crispy, dry and pretty flavorless. The KFC had a little spice but literally no flavor. The 'Murica didn't have flavor either. Both buns were stale. I was surprised the sandwich was made from a chicken thigh and was dry. The potato salad was pretty good. The mac n cheese was gross. Way over seasoned with herbs that totally took over the flavor. Probably a little salt in the chicken sandwiches and potato salad would go a long way. read more

Yelp always has good reviews so when I read about this place I had to go. It was a total flop. While the waitstaff was absolutely awesome, the food was not. The jambalaya had too much tomato paste, chicken was chewy in it, and the spice was lacking. The chicken for the vinegar chicken and hot fried chicken had a ton of skin and fat on it with little meat. The sandwiches came out on teeny plates, which felt like I was eating at a fast food joint. The biscuits were tasty with the sweet butter on it, but alone lacked flavor. Last, the sweet tea did not taste like southern tea for it tasted like it was sweetened with sugar rather than simple syrup. Sad to say this will be a one and done place for us. read more

Short and sweet: my dinner last night was phenomenal. I can't find a single detail about the food or drinks that I didn't like. My favorite item of the night was definitely the Nashville hot chicken. They sous vide their chicken before battering and frying it and I can't explain to you how perfectly cooked my bird was. I'm really excited to get back and try more dishes and explore all of the sides they have to offer. I was entirely impressed by the service and atmosphere. Excited to try a new restuarant! Disappointment greeted us at the door. Walked in and no one was there to greet guests. Wait staff looked at us but never bothered to speak, show us to a table or let us know that we can sit wherever we wanted. Made our way to the table - no menus. When the waitress came over she told us we needed our cell phones to see the menu - thats ok for most but not everyone. Served warm tap water. Drinks were small, weak and overpriced. The saddest part was the food. The potato salad was bland and runny. The chicken was just ok - nothing memorable. The setting is wonderful - windows all around - decorated nicely. Food was good! Very nice place. However we won't return because they had no decent domestic beer selection and we don't drink IPA's or very top shelf liquor. This place isn't really suited for the working class regular people who like the have a draft beer with their meals. The owners obviously stocked the bar with "the hard stuff". The bartender was very nice, as we sat at the bar. If this restaurant wants to succeed, they need to make upscale food, or change their bar selection. They don't go together in my opinion. Located next door to LaSalle Grill in Downtown SB. It's a neat blend of funky and cool. The food reminds me of a cool food truck but without the truck. Biscuits were YUM. Service was pleasant. Check it out if you are in for food that is just a little different. read more
