a dozen cupcakes in a box
    Lauren M.

Omgosh these cupcakes were amazing! I am usually a person who loves icing and then thinks the cake is just meh...but I loved every part of these. I bought 6 of them for my husband birthday - so it was fun to try a variety. I don't even know if I could pick a favorite because they were all so good. I expected to walk in and just see a bakery counter but they do also have some seating inside. I'll be back to fulfill my cravings for these cupcakes and I'll be telling my friends to check out this spot.

I've been wanting to try these desserts for a while now and finally got a chance to. The wait was well worth it as they were scrumptious and did not disappoint at all. This is by far the most moist cake I've ever had. It's an added bonus that the staff were all friendly with smiles on their faces. They officially have a new customer. If you haven't tried, add this to your "must do" list!!!

We really like the owner's story: from convict to baker to successful business owner. He recently purchased a building on S. Alston Avenue in Durham (the old Halgo deli) and relocated there. We stopped by and got some cupcakes to go after visiting the library across the street. We got strawberry, vanilla, carrot cake chocolate cupcakes. To be honest, the cupcakes and icing are a little too sweet for our tastes, but I know they have fans. At the counter, there was no sign indicating what the cupcakes and cake slices were, so the staff person had to list them for us. There are tables inside but we did not notice any coffee or other options. PS, we love the cupcake "selfie spot" mural from Darius Quarles, one of our favorite artists.

OMG!!! I walked into favor desserts to pick up a red velvet cake for a friend. The smell of the pound cake as I walked in was heavenly. I could not resist buying a slice. It is full of flavor and very moist. 10/10 would highly recommend!!

    Yellow cake with buttercream

Extremely underwhelming. My mom order one dozen carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, one dozen yellow cake with buttercream frosting, and one dozen assorted (cakes and frostings should have been assorted). We review one dozen of just chocolate cake with white frosting as our "assortment." Additionally, the cake and frosting sizes are all different. So far I've only tried the carrot cake and in my opinion the cream cheese frosting is way too sweet.

I really wanted to give them more than 3 stars. I came here after seeing such good ratings. Maybe I came on an off day. We came on a Saturday a little before 2pm. The lady working seemed really irritated with us for coming in. When we asked questions, she gave us the shortest answer possible. It made me feel bad to even ask anything, as if I was a bother. We ended up getting a slice of carrot cake & red velvet cake. They were ok. To pay $12 for 2 slices of cake, I think the packaging could've been better.. I wouldn't buy a slice of cake to take to anyone because of the packing. The cake slices are too big for the small container. I love a big slice of cake but these are squished into the container. The cakes were ok. We tried eating them right away & maybe they weren't too good because they were cold as my friend said they were better when she got home & they were more room temp. Anyways, I will come back to try the cupcakes and hopefully the staff is having a better day.

Love it here. They have all the cakes, all the pies and all the cupcakes. I see they also sell the cupcakes at some local restaurants. I went in today and they had a good crowd. The best cake to me is the pineapple cake. But the carrot cake is banging. Go here people and eat.

I absolutely love Favor Desserts!! They are my go to spot for sweet treats. The owner is always there & very hands on. The staff is friendly & welcoming. I come here often & everything I've tasted has been delicious! I mostly get cupcakes - red velvet, carrot cake, chocolate, Oreo, strawberry, vanilla! Not sure how they were operating during this social distancing, COVID-19 times so I called. The lady who answered let me know they were open! She was willing to take my order over the phone or said I could come in person. I went into the bakery & there were floor markings for safe distancing. The owner only allowed a limited amount of people in at a time. As always, everything was fresh & tasty. Oh, and there are Wednesday specials on cupcakes!!

They took all precautions due to the covid 19 padamic.

Not the epitome of decadence, but it's good. There was not a lot of flavor in the red velvet, but willing to give it another try-- maybe.

They make cookies, pastries, breads (pan loaf and hand-formed ones), soups, hand pies, and sandwiches. The variety is amazing. During the holiday season, they offer larger pies and have various seasonal goods to offer. But what's also wonderful is this bakery gives back to the community in many ways. During the height of the pandemic, they offered free bagged lunch to anyone who needed one. They also were (are?) part of the pilot project for Durham's guaranteed income. It looks to me that the owners/company are concerned about being good citizens of the community and that's a great thing. These days, so many companies get bought out by private equity companies. I hope this bakery continues to be locally owned and operated! (Also, generally this bakery isn't offering the very fancy European/European-ish style pastries which is fine by me. The prices are very reasonable, possibly in part because they aren't trying to make their baked goods a "high end" item. There are other good local bakeries that offer "high end" pastries, but they are also much less affordable and for my taste, too rich.)

We got a pack of 8 chocolates (admittedly they did cost a pretty penny haha), which ranked from my most to least favorite are: 1. Horchata: So good, the horchata essence hit me as soon as I took a bite. Very cinnamony, very milky & creamy. 2. Passionfruit: I'm a sucker for anything passionfruit. The curd-like filling did not taste artificial at all. 3. Almond cardamom: Topped with a real almond, but more cardamom forward, reminded me of chai. 4. Hazelnut sassy monkey: Distinguished more coffee than banana, but it was there. Also liked the layer of crunch. 5. Raspberry lychee: The raspberry jam was strong and tasty, the floral essence from lychee was subtle. 6. Sesame matcha: Surprisingly citrusy? I did taste some bitterness from the matcha and appreciated the earthy sesame crust. 7. Ube: Sadly did not detect much ube flavor. 8. Earl grey lavender: Definitely the prettiest, but tasted like what I imagine soap would taste like. In terms of whether the chocolate is worth the price: I've never had this experience of trying such diverse and interesting chocolate flavors before so it was for me. Ambiance is nice, I think there was only outside seating. There's good parking nearby in the Brightleaf lots or on W Pettigrew St. Service was fast and friendly. 8/10 would recommend!

"VERY hole-in-the-wall Middle Eastern patisserie"…read more This gives hole-in-the-wall new meaning. The location is in a strip-mall that's set back a ways from 55, so it's not really visible from the street at all. However, it's weirder than that-- you have to drive AROUND the strip mall to the back, past the various loading docks for other stores, and they you see this place is open just from the BACK of the strip mall. I heard the owner is Algerian, but there are many Palestinian references and flags around the shop, so if that's triggering, then know this in advance before coming in. Still, the place is brightly lit and airy, with tables to eat. They do custom cakes, cupcakes, and other desserts, but we just wanted to sample some sweets. Hours are funny-- just midday Friday through Sunday. We ordered a pecan brownie and a pistachio chocolate dish with kunafa (shredded Middle Eastern pastry), as well as a mocha coffee. The mocha coffee was rich and delicious, as expected. The pistachio chocolate dish with kunafa was to-die-for... SO delicious. Super thick and messy, as you'd hope it would be. And of course the pecan brownie was amazing. I will say the pastries are not "cheap". I got a single tahini chocolate chip cookie to go for a friend, and that was $4.50 for a modest sized cookie. The other dishes above were in the $6 range. But these are unusual custom-made dishes, so it's fair.

Both the atmosphere and the menu are a mix of French and Arabic, so I got a cherry-infused chocolate cake and some sort of cheese and za'atar savory bun, along with a cardamom chai. The chai flavor was interesting, but not altogether strong, while the cake was as delicious as it looked. My cheese pastry was strongly salty, for better or for worse. The price reflects the quality of the food more than the location, let's say, but I was glad I went.
