The atmosphere was a little odd. Everyone was back in the kitchen and we felt like we were interrupting when we wanted to order. The cakes weren't labeled in the case so we had to ask about each one. The woman helping us seemed a bit annoyed that we were asking so many questions. We ordered a lemon pound cake and an Oreo cupcake. The pound cake had a great flavor but was pretty dry. It seemed like it had been sitting out in the case for awhile. The Oreo cupcake was only ok. There wasn't much flavor to the chocolate cake and the frosting was just sweet. Located down 55 in the shopping center right in front of an apartment complex, this small dessert shop is ran by a former convicted felon turned pastry chef. The owner's story is a amazing and so are his desserts. As always I had to get my yellow cake with chocolate icing, but in a surprise twist the yellow cake batter had a hint of lemon. I liked this added addition and the icing was amazing. A slice of cake is a little pricier than other places, but I think it is worth if you want a delicious, moist cake. I savor the moment when fork meets cake and I can dive into the heavenly moistness of deep red combined with delicious homemade icing. No one spoke my entire visit...not even the owner...not at all welcoming yet his payment system asks for a tip when paying. I heard about Favor Desserts and its baker, Keijuane Hester, on NPR's The Story (http://thestory.org/archive/the_story_070912.mp3/view, the last 10 or so minutes). He shares his story about learning to bake while in prison (for cocaine), and his first baking success--a delicious carrot cake, which he learned how to make from another inmate. After being released, he wanted to keep himself clean, so he focused on making a living by baking. With much dedication and hard work (including going door to door with slices of cake for people to try), he has cultivated his business. The bakery itself is in a complex called Bentley Ridge off of Highway 55, and is small, clean, and cute. There were several people sitting with laptops at individual tables when I arrived. The baked goods display was full of delectable treats, including rows of cupcakes, as well as cake slices. While the cupcakes are not as photo-ready as those of Daisy Cakes or Mad Hatter, with somewhat irregular shapes and messily applied icing, they have a charming home-made appearance. His menu is pretty extensive, with many classics such as red velvet cake, 7-up cake, German chocolate cake, and 8 (!!!) different pound cakes (the lady in front of me ordered the 5 flavor one). I've been trying and failing to find a great red velvet cake in the Triangle for years, so I had to try his red velvet cupcake. *horns trumpet* Finally, my yearning for fantastic red velvet cake has been properly satisfied! It was moist, fluffy, pleasingly ruby red, rich, and smothered with perfectly executed cream cheese frosting. It tasted fresh and homemade. I have also tried the carrot cake (since Mr.Hester mentioned it was his first recipe), and it was divine. Moist, rich, and chock full of chunks of delicious nuts and pieces of fruit, and again with that tangy creamy cheese icing. The regular size cupcakes are large, and are $3 each. His menu also lists "petite" size cupcakes which are $1.75, but I didn't see them on display (maybe they are only made to order, or maybe they disappear earlier in the day). I will come back and try the pound cakes. Mr.Hester's baked goods are also apparently sold at Blue Coffee Company. When a facebook friend that moved to Tennesee posted a status about this cupcake place in particular, I knew I had to check it out soon. I mean, when cupcakes have you calling from 500 miles away, it's worth it for me to find out what it's all about. Luckily, I had the opportunity to celebrate a co-worker, so I found my opportunity. I ordered a dozen cupcakes, carrot cake, red velvet, and chocolate and well, let's start with the chocolate. I don't like chocolate cake. But I'll drive to Durham for this cupcake. I want to say I love their deserts, red velvet is my absolute favorite. I have ordered lots of cakes from this location I use to live 15 minutes away. I have over time learned to ask for an earlier pick up time. Past experiences few of the cakes were not ready for pick up at the time requested. So when I ordered my cake last week I asked for earlier pick up. Called after pick time to verify that it was ready it was not. Rep on phone said they could have it ready in about 20 mins which was fine. It would take that long to get there. Cake was not ready when I arrived, was told the decorator was on the way. After waiting an additional half hour it was now officially hour and half after requested pick up time to be told the person was still about 15 minutes away. Welp I left at that point without my Birthday cake as it was pouring down rain getting dark I stopped on my way home from work, as I literally now live an hour away. Saying the family and I were disappointed is an understatement since it had become a tradition to have their red velvet cake at my Birthday dinner but not this year. I'm not big on red velvet but I can honestly say Favors has the best red velvet cupcakes I've ever had. I also had the 5 flavor sliced cake. It was a bit too sweet for me. A friend ordered a slice of their Italian cake. He said it was very good. He eagerly (err...greedily) wanted to go back the next day! I politely said, "No sir." The drive is 40 minutes from my home! I generally coordinate a trip around my daughter's appointments at April's Braids and Beads. My only disappointment with Favors is that they're menu is pretty limited. I'm use to an abundance of Flavors like Mojito, Fuzzy Navel, Banana Pudding, Strawberry, Cinnamon, Carrot Cake, and more thanks to Midnite Confections in Baltimore, MD (shout out). Best carrot cake ever!!!! We drove past the bakery on the way home from Blockbuster. I'm not sure why it caught my eye. Jose C. and I are always on the look out for bakeries, so as we drove past, I yelled out "Bakery!" and we made a U-Turn and headed back. Not really sure what to expect as we walked in, we saw all kinds of delicious cake slices and had a hard time deciding what to get. I noticed there were articles on the back wall with titles such as, "From Crack Man, To Cake Man". It soon became very apparent that there was a unique story behind this business. I wanted to make a quip about the cake being so good that it gets me hooked like cocaine, but figured that it might slightly be inappropriate. As it turned out, the cake was so good, I think it may have been laced in something. Point is, I'll be back for some more coke laced carrot cake. This is one of my favorite little spots to grab a baked treat from. It's on my way home from work and I get in and out quickly. They usually have a few different kinds of cupcakes and I've noticed that they've slowly progressed into having more and more cakes by the slice for grab and go. The presentation on the cupcakes is not gourmet by any means. They are just cupcakes, but they taste delicious and are about $2 each (I think...). Such terrible customer service. It's hard to support local businesses when you get treated like you're not even in the store. I walk in and the man never looked up. When he finally did, he said nothing. Then he tells me to take my time and makes a phone call. He was yelling at the person on the other end and I guess he forgot I was there. So I left out of the store. I looked back and he was still on his call. It's sad because I've heard the owner is a really great guy.
