I fear that if i give a bad review people won't go give these poor birds a home (which they all need). The main problem with it is that there are tons of birds- I mean I have NEVER seen an aviary or bird store with this many birds- 2 levels! there is NO way that these intelligent creatures get the mental stimulation or attention that they need. The place was COVERED in dust, and completely cluttered and disorganized. I also saw caiques eating seed as their main diet, which is bad for birds- they should be on pellets (and good luck converting them it's HARD). Employee said that about half the birds are for sale the rest are the owners- why would a person keep soo many birds and in such small cages?? It's not like there's a huge market and people are out purchasing $1000 birds everyday, these poor guys are gonna be there for a while. Also, when purchasing a bird you should always look for one that is hand-fed and tame, and there is just no way that these birds can be given the amount of them in there and with only 1 employee working. On the other hand, many birds were out of their cages on perches and almost all had another bird to play with which is good (it could be worse). Their selection of toys is poor and none of them have the price, which is annoying. On the other hand they have a million perches- so go figure- i told you it's unorganized. read more

Quite possibly the most filthiest bird store I have ever been too. Way too many birds crammed into octagonal cubicles with other birds of different species. Not enough or no toys given to many of the birds. Just don't go. read more

Great place if you are looking for a companion bird. They really care about the animals and will help you with all your questions.

On the plus side: After a dreadful experience with a pet store in Fairfax, I purchased my new pet, a cockatiel, there. The birds are loved and well cared-for. The babies are weaned to a mixture of seed and Roudybush pellets, where appropriate. The enclosures are mostly quite clean. The birds are given a great deal of free time, outside of their cages, to socialize with humans and each other. On a side note, to Layla: The seeds vs. pellets issue is a religious issue, so to speak; many experienced aviculturists will never feed pellets to their birds, preferring to try to get their birds to eat an appropriate mixture of foods that correspond better to a captive environment. For some birds, like Eclectus parrots and other frugivores, pellets have too much protein; for others, like the large macaws, pellets don't have enough fat. Downsides: A) The store is full of accessories, but they don't keep up with it well by 1) organizing their stock, and 2) dusting their stuff. I always wash things before I use them, but there was a layer of dust on my travel carrier. Yuck. B) The enclosure for the hyacinth macaws REALLY needed attention. C) Although I loved seeing Cape Parrots and a Golden Conure, I don't think that these birds should be offered as pets until they're REALLY well established in domestic aviculture. Summary: Why 3 stars? After having bought a sick bird (and quickly losing him) from a perfectly clean but poorly run store, I bought a feisty, healthy, happy and beautiful little bird from a store that could use a little attention to detail. While I will no longer purchase birds (Adopt!), I think people should be aware that my family purchased two cockatiels from this store who each developed tumors by the age of 10 years old. I shouldn't have had to put down my 9.5 year old little girl. She should have lived another 15 years. read more

Featherheads is a wonderful bird store in Sterling that I would recommend to anyone in the market for a new feathered friend! After doing some research on local breeders in the Northern VA. area, my husband and I decided to try Featherheads as a place to shop for a new cockatiel. To our delight, we found a whole clutch of beautiful and healthy cockatiels with employees who seemed enthusiastic and knowledgeable about their many different birds. Featherheads is a little tricky to find and the hours aren't exactly convenient for everyone, but I think you'll find that if you set aside the time to visit this store, you'll be pleased with what you find. read more

If there was a NO STAR... I would give that. We took our 4 month old Greek Cheeked Conure here for the weekend and when we picked him he had a fractured leg. A FRACTURED leg which had been like this for a few days and the facility didn't call us to let us know he was favoring one leg for over 24 hours. HELLLOOOO obviously something was wrong. We ended up taking him to the vet, he had a open wound which was infected and we had to put him to sleep to put a cast on him which he will now be in for 4 weeks. The owner Susan was absolutely rude, unprofessional and unsympathetic. She had no care in the world about this incident. I would never take a member of your family to this facility!!!!!!!!!!! Its dirty and the staff turnover is ridiculous. They do not care for the birds, they are neglectful and my husband and I will take further action. Please Beware... read more

BEWARE! Bait and switch pricing!! I emailed last night for some pricing, since no prices are listed on their website. I was given prices for 3 different birds. So, I drove 1.5 hours today down to the store to meet the birds with a plan to bring one home. Upon getting to the store, none of the cages had labels or pricing and I saw a few other birds I wanted to inquire about, too, as well as the one's I had emailed about. I was given prices on the ones I had emailed about that were each $50 more than that stated in the email. I showed them the email, from 18 hours before. They refused to honor that pricing. The man who was in charge acknowledged that he sent the email, but the prices had gone up and that they could not honor the prices he had given me 18 hours before because they were "way too low". Funny since their pricing is about 20% more than other vendors and online sites. I asked again if he would honor the prices he had given me and he said no, so I turned and walked out and drove 1.5 hours home. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME!!! read more

Very filthy place with too many birds. Owner do not seem to care at all. The lady at this pet store lied to me. I was looking for a parrot which they told me they had available for certain price but then later next day they called and said the bird was sold but instead they had the same parrot listed $500 above the price they agreed upon. read more

My 12 year old just came back from a visit to the store and was extremely distraught. So much so, that she sat down to research "animal cruelty" and wanted to report this store. She said that the birds in this store are in extremely poor shape. The cages are small and filthy. There are bugs/mosquitoes all over the place. Some of the bugs were in the water, food and on the bodies of the birds. Some birds were so sick that they were sitting on the cage floor. They had a very sick cat also that was roaming the store. Not a place I want my daughter to visit ever again and certainly not a place I'd recommend anyone to buy a bird from. read more

This place is horrifying, don't be fooled by the good reviews posted by employees. I cried immediately after leaving the store, those birds are so poorly kept. Place smells like cat urine, everything from toys to food is dusty and doesn't have a price tag - you have to ask for help for every little thing and the constantly have birds on 'sale' - really? Birds are locked away and never taken out to be socialized and live in cages with hamster toys. I took out a baby Rosie and it was covered with formula - they told me that the baby vomited it up - WELL CLEAN IT, that's hazardous to a baby bird's health! And if the baby is vomiting, uh hello, there is something wrong. While they do have a nice array if you're truly looking for an exotic bird get one from a breeder who specializes in that breed. If you're looking for well-adjusted, socialized, loving, and well taken care of birds I highly suggest DJ Feathers right down 28 in Chantilly. Tammy and Dave are AWESOME and straight forward. They will order anything you want that they don't have and are extremely knowledgeable. They have kind hearts and even rescued a bird boarded at this disgusting facility that feather plucked after being left unattended. Please DO NOT SUPPORT FEATHERHEADS I have gotten all 5 birds from DJ and they are amazing. So happy I found them first. read more
