Ugh. This one hits close to home. I've been going to FB since about 2014, both Crosby and Horatio locations. Michael and Rich and other barbers, I've know for quite some time. I have recommended the shop to many friends over the years. Long story short, I moved out of nyc in 2016 and recently made a last minute booking at the Crosby location while in town. Most of the barbers I'm familiar with are no longer there so I booked to be cut by senior barber Luis Cedeno. I actually chose him because I vaguely remember seeing him at the shop from back in the days, and felt comfortable with it. He was not very nice, actually rather rude and I didn't even have a chance to properly explain what I want as I am a new client of his. Only giving 3 stars here because of the history I have with this establishment. I def won't be coming back to Luis, who seems to be full of bad attitude and just unhappy. I also wouldn't suggest anyone who's new to FB to ever book with Luis. And I know people have bad days, and I'm very understanding but Luis should know that he chose to work in a customer service oriented industry and should not be an asshole to customers. read more

Yvette nailed my pixie cut, my first one ever! My husband's been going to Andrea here for a while now and I quickly became her fan, as she seems to really understand his hair. When I decided to chop off my annoying and erratic long hair I thought Fellow Barber would be the right place to do this. I wanted to make sure it would be quick and painless without chickening out. Andrea recommended a couple of other stylists that would able to achieve the short feminine cut I was going for. I booked with Yvette who had the exact time and day I was looking for. HOWEVER, as of January 18, 2016, Fellow Barber has instituted a 'must have credit card'... 'reserve an appointment online with a Credit Card only POLICY. I not pleased with this new POLICY will no longer be a patron of Fellow Barber as of TODAY. This process of getting a men's haircut has become much to complicated for my liking.... So, I walked into the spot to get a cut about 3 weeks ago and because I knew they didn't take appointments, I didn't know what to expect. For a barbershop not to take appointments is an indication of a business model that revolves around quantity, not quality. How on earth do you expect to get people to come back? Barbers are not like bartenders. They're more like doctors - when we find one, we stick with them. I say to the clown at the front desk, "I have facial hair that needs to be trimmed and lined. Do you have anyone who's good with a straight edge razor?" He replies with "yes" and sits me down at one of his barbers chairs. I forget her name, to be honest. It doesn't really matter - it was one of the worst haircuts I had ever received. She was nice, but nice doesn't mean anything when your hair gets butchered. As she held the scissors or clippers, it didn't look like she has control them. She didn't own her craft. You could tell that she simply wasn't very comfortable. The haircut is over and I'm unhappy. Regardless, it's time to line up my beard. She then told me that she can't do a straight razor and that she didn't want me to be her dummy. I appreciated that, as the last thing I needed was a few cuts on my face. I ended up jumping in the chair of another fellow next to her who took care of my beard. I went up to the register and they charged me $55 dollars for my cut and beard trim. I'm completely okay with paying that amount of money for a good cut, however this wasn't that. I started to follow Fellow Barber on INSTAGRAM and commented on a picture that they posted that same day. I said something along the lines of being disappointing with my cut and asked if they could recommend anyone else who cuts in their WV or SoHo shop. About an hour went by and my comment was deleted. ha! I should add that was much more respectable on that post than I am in this one. I was in disbelief that I was deleted. As a business owner that builds my companies reputation on referrals and repeat business, I couldn't believe what the owner/operator decided to do. So, in a nut shell, this barber shop is a glorified HIPSTER version of Super Cuts. Terrible business model - one of the worst I've coma cross. read more

However, their recent policy of requiring full credit card details to make a reservation is absolutely ridiculous, and until the policy is reversed back to being able to phone in for an appointment I will not be going back. Call me paranoid, but why do you need to store my CC details for a haircut, especially when it seems everybody and their brother is getting hacked and their data stolen from merchants lately? I've been going to Fellow Barber in Soho for a few months now, and I've never looked better -- grooming-wise, at least. The staff here is expert and friendly. The atmosphere stylish and cozy. Wait times have been minimal in my experience. (I usually go midweek afternoons.) And the prices are reasonable for such quality work. My hair isn't the easiest to manage, with a few ornery waves, an equine thickness and two (yes, two) defiant cowlicks. Even so, every cut I've had here has been better than the last. The straight-razor shaves, of which I've had two, are a treat. Though not usually one for self-pampering, I can see myself going for another. The whole process felt appropriately traditional: spritz, oil, hot menthol towel (!), warm cream, shave, repeat, cold towel, lotion. Both times, I left the chair baby's-butt smooth and smelling, quite literally, like a rose. (That'd be the rosewater.) The shop itself is in the heart of Soho, but, rest assured, it's socked away on a pleasant, cobblestoned side street, hidden from the tourist hordes that swarm Broadway. If you do go, I'd recommend asking for Ashley, to whom most of the above praise is due. I've been a customer of hers for a while and have found her to be an absolute ace with the scissor, clipper and razor, not to mention an unfailing pleasure to chat with. A rarity among stylists, Ashley is a dedicated, all-around pro who manages to outdo herself with every cut. So here's to continued success for Fellow Barber. I went here for the first time a month ago and got a great haircut by Ashley. I called earlier today and asked if I needed or if they took appointments. The guy at the reception told me she was working and I could just walk in because they don't take appointments. So I stroll over after work and walk in to be greeted by a girl who tells me Ashley is booked for the day. I ask her why I was told otherwise over the phone a few hours earlier and she shrugs and says sometimes the barbers book their own appointments. How is anyone ever supposed to return after a good haircut if they are being lied to? How can someone be so inconsiderate of a customers time?I won't be returning. I wouldn't recommend going there unless you are okay just going there once and okay with being lied to and wasting a trip to the shop. I have to say, the sign outside that said "now hiring" was a huge red flag (obviously this place is a revolving door if they are looking for people, yet the wait time is at least 1 hour), however i've been to this place once before so i decided to give it another try. Big mistake, huge! I didn't know who works there a.k.a the barbers on staff so I opted out for "no preference" - and this is why I probably won't go there ever again. The random dude that was assigned to me was less than nice/friendly, it was acting as if working there was torture and didn't give 2 fucks about my haircut and my experience whatsoever. So needless to say, I got a shitty haircut, shitty service, and left this place with a shitty taste in my mouth. The fact that my fugly haircut was $45 + tip makes this experience even worse. I go from being femme to androgynous depending on what's comfortable for me, but have always faced major judgment from salons about cutting my hair short. They usually just don't, and I have to settle for something that's "short but feminine!!" which isn't... what I want. I knew something like a barber would have the skill to give me a great cut, but was uncomfortable going to a barber shop (have heard stories from other lesbians about being accosted at some). Enter Fellow Barber (my appointment was an hour ago -- had to rush to a computer to write this!). I booked with Andrea, and she could not be more pleasant, chill, and professional. I never felt like I was out of place there, despite being the only woman in a chair. I was respected and treated to a life-changing haircut. I feel like /me/. I've found my new barber in NYC. Look, it is pricey. But are you going to tell me that going through never-ending trial and error with several subpar barbers is worth the cheaper price tag? I don't buy that. From day one with Ben at the SoHo location, I was hooked. The quality and patience the staff put in here is obvious. Over multiple visits, Ben remembers my haircut and develops a better understanding of my hair each time. He's super detail oriented too which I appreciate. Every time I think he's done, he tweaks another fine detail in my hair. I'm admittedly not the greatest with describing the haircut I want, but he manages to get exactly what I'm saying. He's also pretty flexible in case I want something different that day. The overall experience is seamless. You schedule online, show up, and have a relaxing haircut. They're extremely punctual, but were still pretty flexible when I was running a litle late due to train delays. Fellow Barber will be the best haircut of your life. Terrific first experience today. Online booking process was quick and easy. Got a lunchtime appointment for the next day without problem. Arrived early and was taken for my appointment early. Luis did a terrific job, turning my traditional, very ordinary haircut into something a little more stylish, just a little more interesting. Seriously? Only in SOHO can a barbershop with people having no clue how to cut hair with a scissor charge $40! Well, at least they put a eucalyptus towel on your face when they are done, so it must be worth it right? This is nothing more than a cleaner version of the $12 barbershops all over manhattan. I will assume that if you are getting a buzz cut, they may do a better job, but cutting hair with a scissor is clearly not something my girl was remotely capable of. It was all free form. No measuring of length, no cutting in a straight line. Completely lopsided and in even. BTW - my typical cuts are $50 to $60 so it isn't the money. It was the lack of value, and the fact that I now have to get another cut to fix this one. Save your money and go to one of the cheap barbershops if you don't care about the cut.
