As an androgynous lesbian woman it's important for me to feel secure and happy not just with my haircut, but in the barbershop. The best haircut I've had in my life came from Fellow Barber SoHo. I didn't have to wait more than 10 minutes, everyone was fairly amiable, and from a poor description of what I was going for, my barber (I think it was Luis) gave me my favorite haircut. Xavier is the man. Xavier originally cut my hair at a Barber shop in the chelsea market and then left and lost touch with him. I tried someone else there but was butchered, which I wrote a revue of the experience. I was thrill to have found Xavier at this awesome location. The place is clean and charming with a great vibe to it. I read some of the other reviews and its unfortunate there have been so many neg experiences. This is my first ever online review of anything. Pretentious barbershop. Isn't that an oxymoron? It is no wonder some of their other locations have shuttered. I have been intermittently going to this establishment for a few years because I used to think it was convenient with a cool vibe. However, ever since they changed their reservation system this place has gone down hill. In my most recent experience, after coming from uptown to seek out this place, I arrived 15 minutes late due to train delays and was turned down and told to return an hour and a half later. I completely understand their cancellation policy but the attitude I received from the "barber manager" was completely uncalled for and disappointing. Instead of putting forth any effort to try to be somewhat accommodating, The response was rude and patronizing. I find this ironic for what is a service business that should be built on a repeat customer/client base. Key thing to note: This is not a barber, this is a no frills hair salon. They call some of their stylists "senior barbers" and charge an extra fee. They sell overpriced mustache waxes and 'obscure' retail items. I hate to use the H word but this is a hipster hair salon hidden in an overpriced retail store. For years I got 15 dollar haircuts and they were fine. One day I decided to go to Fellow Barber in williamsburg and they gave me a haircut that exceeded my expectations and now is my standard. Yes 45 bucks is a lot for a haircut, but the experience is pleasant, consistent and it is honestly a better cut that makes me look better. I've been coming here for a while and it's always been a great experience. However, this time I let the barber know that I was growing my hair out. I basically had a thick mop and wanted the sides and back cut short. I explicitly told him not to touch the top whatsoever, that I had been growing it out and intended to keep growing it out. I ended up with a very short top. The cut does look good, but I was bothered that my preference was blatantly disregarded. Maybe it's just ignorance on my part and you shouldn't go to a barber shop like this one unless you're willing to put your appearance entirely in someone else's hands. Either way I was disappointed to the point where I was questioning whether or not I should have had to pay for it. read more

Update: I went to the Bedford Ave location and got a much better haircut. The guy actually told me what would work with my hair and gave me product recommendations. Guess the people at SOHO just want to get people out as quickly as possible. Let's be honest here: almost any haircut here is worth the cost. Everyone here is a professional and will get you here looking good. That being said, don't rush into the next available appointment and don't assume that the service of a Senior Barber will be better for you than a regular barber. It all depends on how you and the barber get along. I first got a haircut here last month from a regular barber and got exactly what I wanted with a good welcoming conversation. I came back recently and got a last minute appointment with one of the senior barbers. The old Italian guy seemed to rush to fit in the half hour appointment, didn't say anything, was pretty aggressive when moving my head, and didn't exactly get the disheveled look I was going for. I didn't feel comfortable saying anything cause he was rushing me out, but it wasn't worth the extra cost for me. I'd still try another Senior Barber, but Not at this location. read more

Not being someone who often has his hair cut (mostly buzzed for the past 25 years), but finding himself with a head full of crazy untammed hair (after 17 months of "meh"), I was in need of more than a haircut and beard trim... I need professional help. Aurelio provided just that, taking the time to really learn my hair (which is nowhere near as weird as I just made it sound), and my routine (1. Wake up, 2. Ignore hair, 3. Terrify the masses), and my goals (less of number 3), to determine the best steps forward. Even there, he took his time to work through the options in a thoughtful and methodical way, making small changes, one at a time, and then reviewing before moving on. In the end, little hair was cut, much knowledge was transferred, and children tended to shriek less often in my presence (test group size of 2 children, so far). I've gone to Fellow Barber the past couple haircuts, and I couldn't be more happy. Both times I've gone after work around 6:30, and there was never too bad of a wait. Calla at the front desk was super friendly and accommodating. Vinny cut my hair last time, and I am super pleased with the results. Too many times have I gone to a barbershop where the person cutting my hair thought they knew better than I did what I want. Not with Fellow. Everyone that has cut my hair has listened (I have a few annoying cowlicks in the back of my head that they noticed and worked with). I don't see a need to go anywhere else. read more

The people are nice, yes, I will not ignore that fact (except the receptionist, he on the other hand was obnoxious and dismissive). BUT! I didn't come for the conversation, I came for a good haircut and that I did not receive. He was poor at articulating what he was going to do even after i described what I wanted. I left feeling like I had got a bad haircut, but only weeks after once it started to grow back in, that I realized how bad it really was. I'm shocked a place can charge so much, have a very pretentious ambiance, sell $90 candles, but not be able to give a decent cut.
