Well, in just about four weeks because she asked me to give her five weeks of growth on top of my head to work with. This was the experience that I have been looking for, and it's not the first higher end salon that I've tried. For the first time someone provided analysis and a plan, brilliant! How do you go to a stylist, pay a ton of money and have them ask you what you want to do? I don't know what I want to do, I don't even know what can be done or what looks good or what can work for my hair type, shape of my face and all that. Kait was amazing. I had a shocking experience here considering the reputation. The owner left me with an uneven…read morehaircut and told me to "have a nice life". I'm not clear anymore if they're going to refund me or not. I was left with a haircut that does not reflect what I asked for and was not resolved after multiple attempts. The only solution ultimately offered was to cut it even shorter into a pixie, which I had been clear from the beginning I did not want. When I pushed back on that and requested compensation for the $105.45 I've already spent on hair products/tools to fix the haircut errors, I was asked to reconsider leaving a negative review and was offered compensation "for the next cut", which sounded to me like a quid pro quo. After declining, the final responses I received from the owner included "anything we seem to do or say you turn around to be something horrible so I am done talking" which speaks for itself in terms of professionalism. I came in with clear references for a micro bob/longer bixie with a piecey, directional finish. The initial result was a pixie in the back disconnected from a micro-bob shape in the front. My bangs were barely trimmed but left uneven, and the overall shape did not reflect the references provided. The cut was then "corrected" by the owner. She significantly improved the back by removing weight and creating the appearance of more length without cutting it shorter. However, the front was taken much shorter in the process. My bangs went from hanging over my eyes to sitting roughly an inch off my forehead, and the overall balance of the cut was not resolved. The sideburns also remained visibly uneven in length even after this second pass. These problems are structural, not styling-related: * the sideburns are visibly uneven in length (even after being addressed, and these areas do not change with parting or styling) * excess weight through the crown creates a dense, rounded "helmet" shape * the transition between the very short back and longer front lacks cohesion * the fringe remains blunt rather than broken up and textured I raised these concerns during the appointment, and multiple stylists, including the owner, were involved. I asked another more trusted stylist for directions on how to fix it and sent the owner this explicit step by step guide. Still, you can see the result. I was told by a 3rd stylist brought in that the result was a dead-on match my reference, which is difficult to reconcile with the visible inconsistencies. The cut was styled in a way that temporarily masked these issues, and the pace of the appointment made it difficult to fully assess what was happening. I felt rushed to wrap up despite actively pointing out uneven areas. After following up, I was issued a refund, which I appreciate. However, I was also told the cut was correct and simply intended to be worn differently, which does not align with what is visibly present. This has also had a real impact beyond the haircut itself. I now have my sister's wedding this summer and may need to rely on temporary solutions like wigs just to make this feel wearable while it grows out. I will be including photos, both haircuts, my before and after plus the inspo with this review so others can judge the result for themselves. If you're looking for a more classic or controlled short cut, this salon may be a fit. But if you want a precise micro bob or similarly structured short shape, I would proceed with caution and make sure your stylist is aligned on execution, not just general aesthetic.

I even did my own big chop and grew my hair myself without concern. I am dope. When I need my hair straight, I deep moisturize and flat iron my hair and I look good! So I was not ready to spend big money at a hair salon, nor spend all day at a Black salon. You know the ones... I am still traumatized by the 8am appointment that ended at 5pm. Anyway, my anniversary was coming up and I wanted to treat myself. I had been following JBH Studios on the gram for some time and thought I would give it a try. The owner is a proud Haitian woman like me with serious natural hair. I like what she stands for. Loved the pics with her Dad! I found her website was pretty descriptive and I didn't feel like there were going to be any surprises. I was a little scared about the lateness fees and things like that but I am a punctual person so ... When I arrived I was greeted immediately and offered water and tea. My coat was taken and I was given a robe and a name tag. I liked this immediately. I did wait a little bit and was like worried but as soon as I met Lena, my hair stylist, any fears I had went away. Lena is the most disarming person I have ever encountered in a salon. We quickly developed an easy rapport. I was having a wash, silk press and trim. End result? I didn't know how much I needed this in my life! This was a complete #BlackGirlMagic experience. The hair wash put me to sleep! The shampoo had a peppermint feeling on my scalp and Lena was gentle but firm on my messy scalp. The blow out was super gentle with little heat. Then she pressed my hair and I didn't even have to hold my ears. I never felt heat on my scalp like I normally do. Okkkuurrr! But the trim was going to be the most challenging. I didn't want a cut... and that does happen with a less experienced stylist. A trim becomes an inch or two off. Well, Lena gave me a mirror and showed me where the dead ends were and discussed her plan with me. I was in complete agreement. And she TRIMMED it exactly as she had told me. I have never felt so relaxed at a salon before. But what was the best part? Everyone in the salon was talking and being included and we were having a great time - in an upscale professional way. All the ladies there were wonderful to chat with. And when I left, my hair was EVERYTHING. It was like I was in a Breck commercial! My hair was silky and healthy and bounced when I walked down the street. I was snapping my head to look at traffic and my hair would SMACK me in my face! I even got compliments on the elevator from two Black women with natural hair, who were super excited when I told them I just got my hair done on the 4th floor! I gave them the info so they could go themselves. Overall, this was a great experience and I will be including this in my life as a treat yo'self necessity. Keep in mind that 75 minutes is a benchmark, probably but I wasn't waiting at any point except in the beginning. Also, no matter my skills, I cannot get my hair to look like this. The next morning after NOT sleeping in a hair wrap, my hair was remarkably STILL straight.

I feel uniquely qualified to write this review for SpiralXYZ as I have had curly hair all my life…read more(over 6 decades), and have known Lorraine Massey, the genius and owner of SpiralXYZ for approximately 20+ something years now, and I fully intend to know her for much longer. I first discovered Lorraine Massey on NY1, a local NYC television news program. At the time, I was looking to help my 60+ year old mother solve the problem of losing her curls which had "suddenly" gone flat much to her displeasure. At the time, Lorraine was the co-owner of the Devachan salon which was located on West Broadway in SoHo. However, the interview I was watching on NY1, was about her 1st book, "Curly Girl: The Handbook." I was instantly enthralled with the idea of having my haircut by Lorraine Massey, but as I listened carefully to her interview, I decided to buy her book from Amazon immediately and read it first, which I did. The book is still available in its second edition on Amazon. I think I grew my hair out for 3-4 months prior to seeing Lorraine in person. I did that as I tend to wear my hair short and had just had it cut. I decided to follow her advice about caring for my curls from her book prior to seeing her. To make a long story shorter, I have been a customer of Lorraine Massey ever since, till COVID hit while I was living in another state. I am now delighted to be back in the fold, although I never really left. Just so you understand, I was not a pushover customer. I was very much mourning the loss of a beloved hair stylist and friend of mine of 15+ years when I first encountered Lorraine. I tried filling his hair stylist shoes by going to the top hair stylist in NYC, especially those known for being curly hair specialists. Between my Mom and me, we had tried 17 other hair stylists. I spent a stupid amount of money doing it too. I worked and I deserved it. Neither of us were happy till we met Lorraine, and there are reasons, multiple reasons. Lorraine Massey lives breathes and thinks about curly hair. It is a passion of hers that consumes her imagination. I do not know about you, but I adore passionate people being one myself. Passionate people give their all to their passions and personally that is one of the many things I admire about Lorraine Massey. She created her hair care products in order to achieve the results she was looking for from hair care products. Like many other curly girls, she found little help from the products on the market aimed at curly girls. I could easily continue this story but want to share that following Lorraine's advice my Mom's hair returned to being curly. I was able to give my Mom this gift because of Lorraine, and she never lost her curls again. I cannot recommend Lorraine or her salon, SpiralXYZ highly enough. Most salons leave me feeling weary of the experience of being stressed out by their atmosphere of kinetic insanity that envelopes them. There is no such environment in SpiralXYZ. It is literally like a sanctuary for both you and your curls, an oasis in a desert that will leave you feeling transformed both figuratively and spiritually. Welcome to curly hair heaven.
