This shop has given me consistently good haircuts since they opened and they're definitely deserving of a higher Yelp score than they currently have (3.7). I've been worked on by many different barbers (stylists?) there over the past 5 years and honestly, all of the cuts have been good to great. The decor is nice, and yes, I can see from other reviews that the Hipster vibe of the place can turn some people off but the place has unmistakable charm and is well decorated. I appreciate their magazine selection and the people working the desk are friendly and helpful. Their price is going to be a little higher than some of your local shops and chains but the quality difference here is clear and, in my opinion, worth it. I've only had two underwhelming experiences there and they happen to have been with my two most recent haircuts (and with the same barber): Once with a last minute cancellation of my scheduled haircut (I can't blame them for this, I assume they had a good reason) and more recently with an issue waiting for my barber to finish his last appointment. I understand running a little late but after waiting 18 minutes after my scheduled time and not getting the sense that there was any urgency for them to finish up their last client, I had to cancel my appointment due to time restraints. Thankfully the guy at the front desk was very cool about it and offered to reschedule me for another time. I'll definitely be back (as I've said, great haircuts and front desk service) but I think I would recommend against scheduling an appointment with Moses. I'm sure he gives great haircuts (like all of them do) but it hasn't worked out well for me. read more

Moses canceled my appointment four minutes before it was set to start. Wasted the drive out here. So far, not great but it happens. However, when I voiced a complaint about this, he became irate, screaming "ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT ME!" over and over. Nevermind no apology, he was verbally threatening. Will he curious to see if this shop continues to tolerate a barber who acts like that. Never seen anything like it. Updated: waited for an hour for another barber to finish. While i was waiting, Moses finished with his clients and then walks up to me while I was on my phone and says "I'm not cutting your hair" (totally out of the blue because of course I wasn't asking after all that). Management reached out and they heard me out an explained what happened. Apparently, the number on their site (and yelp) is handled by a call center. So if you call, you're not calling the actual shop. Get their text number from them directly and any issues will be handled much more smoothly. I'm still waiting for the experience that will blow me which screams 5 stars. But rest assured, when dealing with the management, staff and the barbers, you'll be happy. read more

I've been getting my hair cut by Nick for several years now and I'm always happy with the results. Nick has a great personality and always willing to engage in conversation during the haircut. When it comes to getting the cut, Nick is attentive and receptive to my needs while also confident in offering his own opinion when appropriate. While I've been with Nick for several years, I only started going to Fellow Barber within the last year. So far I've been happy with their facility, staff, and services. I'm always greeted in a friendly manner when I arrive and there was even one occasion, I was a few min late and they called me to make sure I was okay and still coming. Booking is straightforward. You can book ahead on their website and select a location, time and barber. You'll know your total before checking out and then will be billed after your cut is over. I have had my head shaven, dreadlocks, long hair, short hair, etc yet felt like it was time to get a proper professional cut. I just have to say six stars for Lily Mai. We followed her here from another salon and would follow her anywhere! But the people who run Fellow Barber... a huge miss. The guy at the front desk was standoffish, not smiling or warm, not very nice, and made us feel unwelcome from the minute we checked in. For paying $88 for a haircut not including tip, I think we can expect stellar service and accommodations. When we used to go to Peoples, we would pay $30 less and get a whisky or some coffee. Here, they only had an empty water container and when we told the guy he was weird and rude about it. Overall, if Lily moves salons we will not think twice. Lily is with the money but I'm kind of pissed at the lackluster service we received from everyone else. read more

Fellow Barber was once my go to. For years all the way back to FSC I had my hair cut every two weeks on Valencia and then on Market and sometimes in NY. The haircuts and service was always exceptional. Last week I needed a haircut and my usual barber, who has his own shop, but was once a manager at Fellow, had to cancel because he was sick. I had a big event I was hosting and felt lucky I was able to get a last minute appointment at Fellow Barber on Valencia. I opted for first available at the highest price for an experienced barber... Haircut was mediocre. Hair was sloppily cut in a few places, most notably hair along my hairline on my forehead was cut down so there was about 1/2" hairs, which normally get brushed back, we're sticking straight forward. Those hairs aren't supposed to be cut. Most barbers wouldn't do that. I noticed when I got home and had to trim them down for the event, but they're gonna grow out poorly for the next few months. Neckline, nope, little hairs like a two day old shave off to the side away from the fade. What really stood out. No razor shave on the neckline or behind the ears, no hot towel, no clean off of the hairs all over my face. The barber shop quality of experience was completely gone. The price is high end for a barbershop and I expect better. read more

Shan W. has been my barber for over 7yrs and I have never had a bad cut or experience. Not ever! So when I noticed a review by Dan E., i had to speak. People like Dan E. astonish me. They'll sit down, get a cut that they later claim was horrible but say nothing to the barber or the front desk (hmm wonder why?), then they'll even tip (why tip if you aren't satisfied??) then post a review against the only black woman in the shop. (And claim that they're not blaming the barber yet putting her name up there - yeah, that doesn't cover your prejudice.) And All to get a free coupon or discount or a Yelp elite badge, was it? I hope Fellow Barber saw right through your bs and didn't give you anything. And, I hope that the next time you sit in a barber's chair you not only can afford the cut and tip, but you also use your words like most men are able to do instead of coming on here trying to ruin someone's reputation by acting like an entitled jerk because you flunked out of barber school or couldn't get hired as one or whatever, all so you can score a freebie. read more

I normally only write reviews if I have something positive to say, but i'm writing this review a couple of days after the haircut because I really can't get over how far off base the haircut I received is from what I asked for. I came in on Wednesday with photos for reference, to which the barber referred to multiple times throughout the cut. Despite this, not only did they shave the sides of my hair down far past the 3-4 shown in the image, they styled my hair at the end of the cut entirely differently from how the haircut looked in the multiple photos I provided. My hair looks sloppy now, with a disconnect between the top and sides that I really dislike. It looked worse too, with parts of the hair looking choppy and the back too long, but I thankfully found someone that at least corrected my hair a little bit for cheap. I'm going to be starting up in a professional setting soon, and I had hoped to make a good impression. In retrospect, I probably should've gotten my hair cut two weeks prior just in case something like this happened, but I just really didn't expect it from the kind of place you pay $50+ for a cut. read more

I went there over the weekend with a buddy while he was getting his hair cut and I really enjoyed myself while I waited, just browsing around their vast space. They have a great selection of art books and high-end magazines. It's a really pleasant space to spend time in even when you're not getting a hair cut, which btw, my friend was thrilled with! I was 4 mins late for an appointment and they canceled it and when I walked in 4 mins late I was told that they already texted another client to come early and won't see me!?!? Ive been a regular at Fellow for over 2 years. This is ridiculous - where's the grace period? Terrible attitude/ customer service from Ben for a 4 min late arrival. 4 mins! I've been later than that for doctors who still saw me. What kind of attitude is this at Fellow Barber/ Ben?!? Ironic that when I do come on time they routinely made me wait 10-15 mins before seeing me. This is an especially poor way of treating clients and incredibly arrogant on the importance of your time if you don't see customers right at the minute of their appointment. This is the height of hipster self-righteousness. Expected better from Ben - spent a lot of time in his chair. @Fellow Barber/ Ben, you guys be better than this... this is a pretty shitty way to treat a customer. I can understand that people need to respect your time too and not be unreasonably late - but 4 mins?? C'mon. Andrea always does fabulous work on my hair. She is incredibly detail oriented and will never rush the art she creates. I always feel very well taken care of from my consultation, to my recommended bang trims, and products. I have long hair and she always achieves the variations of cuts that I desire. Wanted to Love it! Wanted to Enjoy it! But Didn't! Just left the Fellow Barber and needed to get a haircut. My girlfriend made my appointment and I was willing to take her recommendation because one of her friend's boyfriends goes there and loves it. Cool, I will try it! Haircuts are $45.00 each. Fine by me! If they are killer and it looks good and people like it and my girlfriend likes it, my clients and prospects like it so I can look good for my presentations, I WILL DO IT! So why one star? Because, I respect and honor my time. I respect and honor my time and other's time so much that I am willing to arrive early. I have my own business to run. I have my own errands to do. My appointment was for Tuesday, August 16th at 1:00 pm. I arrived at 12:40 pm. I checked in and I was told to make myself at home. I two other another man seated in the waiting area. one with short hair and another one with rather long hair and a beard. Both on their cell phones. A woman comes out and says, "Steven?" and the short haired guy stands up and goes to the back. The man with the long hair stands up and then goes to stand behind the front desk. "Ahhh! He works here! I get it, he was just checking his phone while on a break." I saw to myself. But then I wait another 10 minutes past my appointment time without anyone coming to me and say, "Sorry, we are running a bit behind" or "Adam, may be bump you back somewhat in time?" Nothing. So, at 1:10 pm, I canceled and rolled out. I showed up, they didn't. Also....I am happy about this! Due to a $45 price tag for a high quality haircut, they lacked customer service and communication! What if the Barber cut my hair in a way that I did not want? What if the Barber did anything that was not as I had asked? I would had to go back and reflect on the fact that they didn't respect my time, they didn't respect or honor communicating with me about a short insight of being of service to me. I think that I dodged a bullet! So to the front desk guy who didn't update me, "Thank you! You probably saved me from a bad experience. Recommending this place is not worth my time, but posted a bad review up on Yelp or Google is worth my time. Went through the process of booking for haircut and beard trim and "something went wrong" on the booking site. Called to confirm and sure enough, no appointment. However, the lady offered next available spot and I took it, only to realize this is for haircut only! No time for beard trim. It's a bit of a wait for a first-come first-serve service spot but it's well worth it, especially when a Men's Haircut is only $40.
