Never got haircut from a female barber, but took chance. My initial first impression of her was good. On-time. While waiting for a business meeting I found myself in the Mission (SF) next to Fellow barber. It was raining and I had an hour to kill. Fellow Barbershop looked warm and inviting, so I decided, it was a good time to get a hair cut. Being an antique dealer by trade, I was immediately struck by their authentic barber antiques. Including original turn of the century backbar and double pedestal art deco sink. I commend whoever curated the authentic decor. You can tell a lot of thought and consideration was put into building the shop with respects to the history of Barbering . I choose the Junior Barber Service. With the understanding they are newer barbers and hoping it would be a longer service, to keep me out of the rain. My barber was Danielle. She was professional, polite and very easy to talk to. We discussed the antique decor and traditional barbering. I was impressed with her knowledge and passion. As we settled into the cut I closed my eyes and just relaxed. I think Danielle sensed this and allowed me to close my eyes with minimal conversation. There was none needed. Her gentle, confident touch let me know she knew what she was doing. I just sat back and enjoyed the pleasure of a good cut. When Danielle was done, I felt refreshed, restored and shiny like a new penny! I would recommend Fellow Barber and Danielle in particular, if you need to feel refreshed, rejuvenated and looking your best. Before I left I set up a reoccurring appointment. I walked out, the clouds parted , the rain stopped, and the sun peeked out. I felt like a million bucks! It was exactly what I needed on a gloomy day . I look forward to my next visit. P.S. I never write reviews on here but I just had the BEST experience here so I need to rave about it! M took great care to give me exactly the style I was looking for - they checked in with me multiple times throughout the cut and gave me some styling tips to achieve the look at home. They were super duper friendly, easy to talk to, and all around provided a great experience and a great cut! Truly have never been happier with my hair, not to mention how welcome I felt here as a trans person. I honestly wish I could give it more than 5 stars. Today, I am busy trying to finish up business and pack before leaving for Ireland tomorrow at 5am. I tried several barber shops in my neighborhood as I needed a very fast tidy up. I had it cut a week ago. but none could see me as a walk in. I has never been to Fellows as knew was expensive, but needs must. I walked in to an empty barbershop with only one chair busy and was greeted warmly by a lady. I had no idea of her role and I asked for quick cut. I missed the gentleman behind the check in desk. My first error and the was made feel it as he checked me in and passed me back to the lady. I was seen immediately. I explained I literally had 15 minutes max and understood that she could only do the best she could, in the time I allowed so I am not even going to mention the quality of the cut. i wanted a quick short back and sides. Nothing fancy. I declined the wash, the hot towels etc The cutter was a lovely lady from Thailand which (and maybe I'm traditional ) but I prefer more traditional male ish barbers in a barber shop. I was in the chair 12 minutes. Yes, I timed it. I thanked the lady and went to the 'desk" I almost fell over when the man said $62.50 I am writing this not because I didn't pay it, but because it was a total rip off. Then I was firmly put in my place by the really (what I felt) rather superior check in gent when yet again I was made to feel I was wrong "this is a high end salon" he told me. Since when does high end mean 'rip off' I have been in a lot of barber chairs over the past 55 years and really I have never felt such bad value for money and really I left feeling 'ripped off'. An ordinary 'clean up' as she called it at ridiculous 'con ' like prices. I would have been grateful for an obvious charge menu. At least I would have been forewarned .Yes, I did look for one, as I didnt have much money on me and was expecting something in the region of $40. At $62.50 I would expect a real barber shop not a fancy salon posing as one. Sorry to the lady for the lack of tip. I just couldn't . I went to the $14 dollar salon down the block the week before as was stuck again, where they do not speak english (I doubt speak spanish) and honestly I came out feeling I would go back. This review is for Chang: Absolutely one of the best barbers I've ever had. I tried out 4-5 different guys for shaves and hair cuts, and I eventually found Chang. Extremely friendly, takes his time yet is speedy, and makes sure every customer is treated right. I see him anywhere from 1-3 times a month and highly recommend him. Chang is amazing. That's still the same. I've decreased the rating because the management is so sketchy. This review is for Michael, who you should ABSOLUTELY book to cut your hair! TL/DR: Usually hate haircuts but Michael is so damn talented at cutting hair and so accommodating with his customers that I genuinely look forward to getting a trim. Let this man line you up!!!! I should start by saying that I've always been a little particular about haircuts, because I've had my fair share of bad ones and because my hair is harder to deal with now that it's thinning. When I moved to the bay area, I decided to give Fellow Barber a shot. I tried a couple different barbers before I met Michael, who is an absolutely rockstar with the shears. Despite being a self proclaimed introvert, he is a natural conversationalist who will put you at ease with his ability to relate and engage with his patrons and with his amazing talent for cutting hair (seriously, you're in great hands- wish I knew how to link a picture to show you guys). Furthermore, he goes to great lengths to understand what it is that YOU want in a haircut, and he actually honors your request (you'll never have to worry about him lopping off too much when you tell him "just an inch", for example). Generally it takes me a couple days to get used to a trim, but Michael does such a great job following/understanding the natural waves/curves of hair when doing his thing that I always feel like a million bucks when he's done. He's also as great/genuine of a guy as he is a barber, which as anyone who's had a haircut by him can tell you is REALLY saying something. Upon discovering that I couldn't book with him before needing to travel (he wasn't available), I reached out to Michael in the off-chance that he could squeeze me in super early on the day of my flight. He immediately responded back to accommodate my request, even though he wasn't even on the clock that early. He's just THAT great of a guy. If you couldn't care less about getting a good haircut, maybe you should look elsewhere. But if you're curious how a person like me who used to dread going to the barber now actually looks forward to it, do yourself a huge favor and ask for Michael Pettit. Hygiene is the differentiating factor. The charges are high. For example - A haircut is twice that of a regular barber charges. Service is the same except the hygiene factor. If the regular barber has the same hygiene then fellow barber is not my choice. Moreover, they have weird rules. You have to be in the shop 15 minutes prior to your appointment or you might be charged. On the other side, they waste 15 minutes of time owing to delay on their side. No penalty on that side. If you like over-priced haircuts from the greenest, mostly inexperienced haircutters, go ahead and piss your hard-earned cash, not to mention valuable TIME at this wannabe hipster barbershop. I stupidly sat for three overly-long, completely below basic $55-$65 haircuts in a row, my mother say's I "never learn!" I should have gone two blocks up and over to Mission street for a much better $15-$25 haircut. The customer service here is non-existent, Mackenzie, the manager wasted so much of my time booking me with even less-experienced barbers than the last time and didn't follow through or even care that I was completely unhappy with my half-assed haircuts. Needed a do-over (twice) because I was not at all happy with the finished look, the barber never once turned me to the mirror, only barely at the end when I was rushed out after almost 85 minutes of sitting there. It's not the barber's fault, they are thrown on the floor without any additional training. DO YOURSELF A SOLID AND GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!! Sean Lomeli gives the best cuts. Period. I've tried barbers all over San Francisco, and Sean has consistently given me the best, and longest lasting cuts I've ever had. It's evident that Sean takes pride in his craft, as he is considerate enough to ask relevant questions regarding your maintenance preferences and other lifestyle factors that inform him on how best to approach the cut. Furthermore, he is knowledgeable about product, and can teach you about all manner of technicalities related to his field. It's always a pleasure to sit in his chair. I had a really bad experience with Lily Mai. She gave me an uneven haircut, and when I asked her to even out the sides, she became increasingly annoyed and hostile with me. It made me feel really awkward and uncomfortable. She was visibly upset and impatient. She insisted that I tip her, even after she was really rude and curt during our interaction. This has been the worse barber experience that I've ever had. I'm still processing the terrible experience, that made me feel very uncomfortable. And after all of this, I still walked out of the shop with an uneven haircut. read more

I'm not sure what the purpose of having an appointment was if the shop will simply keep you waiting for a longer period of time than the actual haircut itself with barely an acknowledgement or explanation from the staff. This might be of the only Yelp reviews I've written. Fellow Barber regularly reschedules my appointment same-day and I am always flexible with them. This week I called letting them know I would be 10 minutes late and was told that it was fine. I arrived 11 minutes late and was in line behind two others to check-in so add a minute or two. After driving across town through rush hour traffic I was told I was booked as a "no-show". No follow-up call from Fellow Barber or anything. Last time I'm going there. Despite the fact that booking appointments during the weekend on the day of is basically impossible, and that even when booking a week in advance, I had to wait an extra half hour after my appointment was supposed to begin, this was arguably the best haircut I've ever received. Chang both listened to what I wanted, and also just seemed to know intuitively what my hair needed and proceeded to work wonders. My hair is naturally very curly, but I often wear it straight or wavy, and somehow, this haircut works for all my moods. Thanks man, I'll be back. Update: I went back, and this time, had a haircut and beard trim by Jay. It had been a while since my last cut, and both hair and beard were unruly. Maybe it was because of a weekend spent in Palm Springs, but I was a bit discombobulated, and didn't even know how to describe what I wanted. All was well, though, because Jay just went to work, checking in occasionally to make sure that everything he did was okay by me. It was. Terrible customer service. I was charged a late fee AND full price of haircut for being late even though in constant communication with shop about ETA and, when I arrived, was refused service. I'm happy to bump my previous review up to 5 stars. Fellow Barber listens to its customers, and now accepts reservations up to 4 days in advance. That alone has saved me hours every time I need a beard trim because I don't have to show up once to get on the list and 4 or 5 hours later to get my trim. They also opened a new store on Market Street in downtown San Francisco, where I see my barber now instead of on Valencia Street. The new shop is another really great space. And let me give a plug for Alder, who is the only barber I trust to trim my beard. I have had some real hatchet jobs, but Alder is a beardsman himself, so he knows how to tend a beard. I only wish I had hair on top of my head so he could cut that, too. The guys who walk out of the store after he cuts their hair look sharp. read more

I have never had a bad haircut at Fellow Barber. My favorite hair stylist, Jow, is not only sweet and kind, but incredibly talented and careful with my hair. She has taught me so much about how to treat my hair, and really understands what I want/need for a haircut. I have never experienced this level of care at any other salon, and I find myself always coming back for more. Watching Jow and her fellow co-workers is like watching an artist develop a masterpiece. There must be insane demand for a decent barber cut in this town. Guys literally line up for this shop. Fellow Barber pumps out haircuts as fast as they are able to sign them up. There are 6-8 chairs if I remember correctly and they're always full. I think this shop is another business to fall under the "victim of their own success" category. I called and was informed that it would be a 2 hour wait with 45 people ahead of me. "2 hour wait?! Do you take appointments?" "No, sign up at the counter, and that's how it works." "Can you put me on the list, and I'll hop in the car right now?" "No, sorry can't do that." Listen Fellow Barber, if you have that type of demand, then you really need to start taking appointments, so you're not wasting your time and mine. That's my take. Nobody in their right mind wants to wait around 2 hours for a haircut. This is not Space Mountain at Disneyland. Not only that, parking is a nightmare in this neighborhood, so don't expect convenience. They're definitely doing the whole old-timey, handcrafted, hipster thing. And I get it. Dudes want that. Yet, a barber cut should not cost $50 with tip. This is not a stylist. I wasn't even offered a beer at this price, which seems to be standard among other shops in this vein. The cut was not bad, and they were nice. Yet, I've gotten the same haircut out of a smaller legit barber shop for $20 and that includes the tip, with a vastly shorter wait time. I'm giving them 2 stars because of the decor. They have awesome antique wooden barber shelves lining one wall. Has bare-breasted masthead carvings with the nipples rubbed down. Came in after reading some initial good reviews. However, I never did get a chance to have a haircut. I go into the shop, there are three barbers, all with customers in their chairs. The guy at the counter told me it was a 15 minute wait for one of the chairs to free up. Reasonable, I thought. One of the gentlemen, a tatooed latino hipster, finished up with his customer within about 10 minutes. He disappeared for a few minutes then returned, spending the next ten minutes trimming his beard, oblivious or ignoring the fact that he had someone waiting to get a haircut. I've been to Fellow Barber about 6 times since moving right around the corner and I must recommend: do NOT go there. First, I've been trying to 'sell' myself that the $50 price tag for a very mediocre haircut from a virtually inexperienced barber was 'OK' since the place seems so cool. But it's not. My last cut there was awful and the barber (can't remember his name) was only 6 weeks into his professional career. But the worst part was today. I recently broke my leg and it's very difficult to get around... So I called there to ask a favor if they could put me in the list without having me take two trips down and up my stairs which is tiring and dangerous. The told me to make an appointment online.. Which I tried 3 times (and it says in the site their system is invest and might not work) so I called back and said 'hey, I've got a broken leg, your online system ain't working, can you do me a face and just sign me in now... I've been there a bunch and I'll definitely show up'. The girl, Jessica, said 'sorry we can not do that'. Huh.... Some neighborhood barber in the mission. The bad haircuts at crazy high prices are one thing.... But the lack of humanity and compassion for an injured patron and neighbor just makes me feel that this place stinks. Don't go....
