What a gem of a restaurant Feng Chophouse is. We went here for a random date night before seeing a show at Hartford Stage around the corner, but the atmosphere is perfect for a special occasion. It's so glamorous and sexy, with a grand piano in the room we were seated in! There are a few different dining rooms, all connected though, and all so pretty. We started out with the pan-fried oysters, surf and turf dumplings, and the shishito peppers. I got the lobster roll for my entree and my husband got the chicken katsu udon noodles, with a side of baby bok choy to share. Dessert was the carrot cake and the pear tart. It was the perfect amount for us! We were so satisfied and full. Each bite was absolutely delicious. Seriously delightful and so well crafted. It's unlike any other Asian meal I've had out. The Lady M crepe cakes for dessert were the best (esp the matcha flavor). This place is special. If you're a fan of Japanese-inspired surf and turf done right, don't sleep on it. I will say the hostess was not the friendliest. The restaraunt was completely empty and there were empty tables in the bar but she kept telling us everything was reserved. I honestly believe it was bc us 3 ladies were dressed of a concert and she must of thought otherwise of us. Zack & I enjoyed a nice anniversary dinner at Feng on 6/15/26. We got a lychee martini and I had a green tea lychee martini mocktail. We started with foie gras dumplings which Zach said might just be a bit too fatty/rich for his taste, but I enjoyed them. We split a 10pc nigiri platter which was yummy, they have seasoned sushi rice here, which I hadn't seen before. The Otoro Caviar was the star of the show, the fatty bluefin tuna was our favorite. The service was excellent and our server was very attentive to our needs. There was a corporate party seated for dinner across from us and an elderly couple next to us so it looks like a good spot for coworkers and couples to enjoy some sushi. The restaurant is nicely situated in beautiful downtown Hartford and was just stones throw away from popular hotel chains like Hilton and Marriott. The walk to get there wasn't bad at all. As soon as you walk in, your greeted and sat by the waitress. The restaurant reminded me of an anime, like a Japanese anime in a quasi futuristic yet elevated luxurious way. They have plenty of seating available at the sushi bar but the man bar with what appeared to be one bar tender, was full of patrons. I opted for a table because I had work to do as well while I waited for my food. My only negative would be that the quality of the service was significantly less because I was a solo diner at a table. The wait staff did focus all of their energy on patrons with 2 or more tops. So if your looking for a more well rounded experience, invite a friend or multiple so that you can get your water refilled in a timely manner, drinks, inquire about menu items ect. I ordered the dragon and avocado roll along with a chocolate cake. All were excellent which is why I rate this place a 4 out of 5. Parking: I walked on foot but didn't notice street parking. Our second time here!! This time for our 25th anniversary. Amazing once again!! Lucky enough to get the same server we had the first time!! Impeccable service! Love the dark and moody atmosphere, it's relaxing. Started with a perfect dirty martini made with a Japanese vodka ( can't remember the name) and a Davis Bynam Chardonnay. My husband had a bourbon. I am rating 3.5 stars. Feng Chophouse gives the impression of a fine dining experience, but certain aspects don't quite live up to that. There's surprisingly no cocktail list or drink menu with descriptions which seemed odd for a place positioning itself at this level. You can barely find the drink menu online either, or descriptions of their signature cocktails. Alcohol doesn't seem to be a real focus here, which feels like a missed opportunity for a restaurant that otherwise wants to feel upscale. The service was professional. The food itself was hit or miss. The spicy tuna crispy rice was fresh, beautifully done, and genuinely delicious. However, some appetizers and the dessert felt common for the price point, and some menu items were waaaaaay overpriced. Overall very fresh fish. read more

Grabbed dinner for the first time in a few years! I can definitely say me and Feng got off on the wrong foot. We were seated in the back and I loved the decor. Super chic and modern, it definitely is one of the more upscale restaurants in Hartford. I ordered the calamari, dry aged steak and cheese, and the good fortune to drink. The good fortune was delicious, similar to a pina colada. The calamari was cooked well and wasn't rubbery or oily. I loved the sandwich! It was perfectly salted and the bread was very soft. We stopped by in the early evening to grab a cocktail and we were easily able to find a spot at the bar. The bartender was fantastic and offered to make us cocktails, one with Chambourd ( no specific drink listed on menu) and another with whiskey. The cocktails looked like magazine advertisements and tasted wonderful. Excellent service. The bar is gorgeous and the interior dining areas are dimly lit with beautiful wooden accent screens and simple yet elegant table and chairs. We started with the Shishito peppers, wacky, surf and surf dumplings, and crispy rock shrimp tempura. I loved the shishito peppers. The dumplings were quite good as well and the rock shrimp was good. A very large serving of the shrimp tempura was served. It wasn't my favorite of all the apps that we tried. The sushi rolls and nigiri are very fresh. I tried the chophouse roll and it was so delicious. My friends tried the otoro caviar roll, and angry dragon alongside nigiri pieces. This is an eclectic restaurant that brings together a true fusion of East and West. The best of food and some of the undesirable traits of the environments. Let's start with the food. The spicy edamame was very flavorful with a bit of spice, but not too much. There was fresh garlic slices as well. Yum! To keep the fusion fun and weird, we got a chopped salad and a Miso soup. Both were amazing. The chopped salad has pomegranate seeds which create a fun balance of textures and flavors. The sushi rolls were fantastic. The Feng Chef and Jalepeno rolls each had about 10 pieces and were flavorful. We kept our fusion strange with a side of Brussels sprouts, which were perfectly crunchy and seasoned. The service was very good with excellent communication. The downside was timing and noise. The bar was very loud and patrons were obnoxiously shouting at the TV, which belied the rest of the atmosphere. The sushi chefs were also backed up and it took a while to prepare the two rolls. 3.25 stars. So let me start with the super positive. The entrance to Feng's is pretty impressive with blood red hues and modern accents. I like the overall dark feel to the restaurant. It adds a level of intimacy to the place that is hard to find in Hartford. On top of that, the service here is quite good. They make good recommendations especially with regards to drinks. I had a couple of lychee martinis here, and I thought they were delicious. Where I probably went wrong with Feng Chophouse is my own order. They had a 15 piece omakase priced at what appeared to be an absolute steal at 58 dollars. My math says less than 4 dollars per piece is a fantastic deal. But the quality of the omakase - when compared to other places across the US - simply didn't hold up. Some of the cuts were fairly rough, and none of the amazingly fresh silky flavors I've come to love were really present in the cuts. I think it's great that they offer omakase, but on a subsequent visit, I'll probably try one of their steak offerings. And if that doesn't work, I think it would still be a fun place to wind down for some late night drinks. read more

I arrived at 5:13 for a 5 pm reservation, aware of the 15-minute policy, and stood there while the hostesses stayed on their calls without acknowledging me. When one finally got off, she scowled and said, "You're more than 15 mins late," without even a hello. After I explained I'd phoned several times and no one answered the phone (yes, the same phone she was on), she backed down. I came for dinner, not a reprimand. The restaurant was nearly empty, yet the welcome was anything but warm. The food didn't redeem it--my drink was mostly ice, the lobster painfully salty, the noodles just okay. The salad was excellent, but one bright spot couldn't save the meal. Service was efficient but slow and uninspired. Aside from a brief bit of warmth at the end, the experience fell flat. The restaurant had a couple of families visiting, so the ambiance was laid-back. I ordered the Angry Dragon roll and the Udon Noodles with Wagyu Meatballs, both were excellent! Pricy, well prepared food. You pay for the ambiance Girlfriend landed a pretty nice job, so we wanted to go out and celebrate. Being a local foodie, I know that Ginza and Feng are the top places in the state for sushi, so the girlfriend decided to treat me to this place in hartford. First off, parking is limited to a few spots in front and a parking lot that's across the way. The parking lot charges 5 for parking under an hour, and 11 for parking under 2 hours. It's pricy for parking in hartford, but not unheard of. Going into the restaurant, it's very well decorated and the ambiance is a very intimate affair. Black linens, black chairs, singular spotlights illuminating single spots on each table. everything is dark and purposeful. Staff wears all black with red accents, very professional and very accommodating. We ordered a decent amount of food. We got a 10 oz filet, their signature maki, 2 sides, 2 sushi rolls (Surf and Turn and a Jalepeno roll), and 2 desserts (Crepe cake and Carrot Cake). Food comes out all at once, which was a pretty big error in terms of meal pacing. but it was fine, we took our pics and dug in. The plating was well done. all the plates were pretty and decorated well. The signature maki and the steak were the best bites out of the meal. The maki was fresh, composed and seasoned even though it was just raw fish. They showed awesome attention to detail and made sure that the bite itself had just enough composure to accent the star of the dish which was the fish. The steak was cooked properly, seasoned and butter basted. The meat was tender, juicy, and flavorful. A very well done and properly executed filet. The rest of the items were good, but were lacking the same attention that the other dishes had. The sushi rolls were prepared with premium ingredients, but they were not properly balanced. The surf and turf roll, the fried lobster had too much breading and the a5 wagyu was overcooked. the jalepeno roll was good, but there wasn't any flavors that were different or unique compared to a standard sushi restaurant. The sushi rolls were presented in a way that made the overhead spot lighting cast a lot of shadows on the dish. there was no nice way to get pictures of the food, which was a shame. The sides were very clean but also very generic. The mushrooms were an assortment of mushrooms, but very much just cooked mushrooms. The duck fat potatoes were potatoes cooked in duck fat, and nothing really else. They were high quality ingredients, but very generic cooking. The crepe cake was unique. it's effectively like eating scoops of whipped cream with thin layers of eggy pancake in-between. Not bad, and glad to say I got to try it. The carrot cake was very much mostly frosting, and the cake was not in proper proportions for the amount of frosting. The biggest issue was the price. Each item effectively came out to 20 bucks, with the steak commanding $60. I do not mind paying for quality, especially if those bites are very tasty. In this case, I have gotten better bites for cheaper in a few different locations. I can appreciate an attempt to keep flavors clean and simple, but I would expect there to be accents to emphasize the natural flavors of each item. That with the price makes this place not great. It's good, but very pricy for what you get. It's a good place to bring a date if you're trying to impress, but if you're not trying to impress anybody then there's little here to bring you in. read more

Not sure why I have not yet written a review for Fengs. It's one of our favorite restaurants in CT. It has the two things that our family loves. Steak and Sushi. And you know what. They do these two things well. Feng is located in the heart of downtown Hartford. Parking is easy as there is a paid lot right in front. It's 10 dollars for 2 hours. Perfect. This restaurant is likely much busier during the week due to business travelers. They are usually not that busy on Saturday evening which is usually when we visit. Service is very good. The male waiter that we usually get knows the menu inside and out. I always get a feeling that he is part owner. But not sure. Food is overall very good to awesome. Could. you get better sushi and steak elsewhere? Sure But maybe not at the same restaurant. Overall the food ranges from B+ to A+. We usually get two sashimi appetizers. Yellowtail Jalepeno and the New Age Sashimi always hits the spot. . I usually get the porterhouse. It's cooked very well and very flavorful as it's aged...every now and then you may get one that's slightly over aged. But normally they are spot on. The rolls are very good overall. I think at this point we have ordered almost every single roll on the menu. I always get a bottle of Sake with our meal. For a 720ml bottle it runs about 48 bucks. Not a bad deal for you drinkers out there. To top it off we get the Mi Lady Crepe Cakes. Last time we went they no longer offered chocolate.
