This was our last stop on our Apple Hill trip. Pulled up and scenery looked beautiful. Tasting room was a bit full when we arrived but almost immediately we were greeted and given glasses. After that we were pretty much ignored because the lady that had been helping us was busy doing other things. She started cleaning glasses, doing her hair, making bagel bites. All these things were more important than helping customers. The other employee there apparently could only help one couple at a time because she completely ignored us also. There was also unattended children running in and out of the tasting room. One boy shoved himself in between my friend and I to grab some crackers almost knocking our wine over in the process. No one said anything so I guess this a normal thing here. On top of all that, I was not entirely impressed with the wine. I'm not much of a wine person myself. I have just recently gotten into wine but I almost always find a wine that I like. When I go wine tasting, I usually buy one to two bottles depending. Even my friend who loves basically all wines had trouble drinking these. Needless to say I walked out of there empty handed. This last winery of the day was pretty disappointing. The lack of professionalism was astonishing especially when compared to the two wineries we went to before this. Next time this winery is definitely a skip. read more

Great little spot with great staff! We have held a wine club membership for the last 4-5 years and will continue to do so, as long as Deb is the tasting room manager. All of our other memberships have been canceled while we balance our budget. Deb has ensured that our experience is always pleasant, and for that Fenton Herriott has remained our sole membership. Every time we swing by, which happens to be about a half dozen times per year, there are several new wines to try along with some of the old staples. The selection of wines is quite impressive for a smaller winery. We recommend, at the current moment, the Cab, Merlot, Janeway (white), Chardonnay, and the Petit Syrah. New recommendations TBA after our next visit. The property is a lovely spot to sit, sip some wine, and snack on some grub; they currently do not serve food, aside from a few simple snacks, such as cheese, while you're tasting the wine. Deb knows how to pick good cheese. It's difficult not to eat it all while you're standing there with a glass of wine in your hand. Willpower is key. I digress. Bring some munchies if you plan to sit there and eat. With limited staffing (it's usually Deb in the tasting room, busting her butt) it can get busy, especially when there are large, touring groups, such as the wine tour bus, bachelorette parties, etc. It's impressive to watch Deb keep up. Even when it's crazy busy in the tasting room she does everything within her power to ensure that she delivers the best customer service possible. She's kind of like a walking Google Maps or Yelp for the area; always knows what's going on and where to visit for more wine and for good food. We absolutely love her energy! She's real, communicative, and fun to chat and laugh with. So many other wineries' tasting room staff are like uptight robots. Deb is not an uptight robot, which is why we come back constantly and as stated before, will continue to do so, as long as she is there. With few exceptions, the patrons are great as well. We have met many nice people while tasting wine there. Every once in a while you get a "Sour Sarah/Negative Nicole/Bitter Betty" but, the general good outweighs the few bad. Every single person we recommend try Fenton Herriott falls in love and either becomes a member or simply a regular, and they all comment that they love Deb. Every time. I cannot say enough good things about this place!! Not only is their "Janeway" an absolute fave of ours but my now fiancé proposed to me in their beautiful gazebo. The vineyard just held some great memories for us so he decided that's where he would ask me to be his bride. He called ahead and coordinated with the Team at Fenton Herriott to make it so absolutely special! Special shout out to Dominick who took care of so many special details for us, including capturing the moment on video for us without me even knowing it was happening. There was a little hiccup in the video reaching us, due to technology not cooperating but Manager, Margaret and Tasting Room Associate, Dianna came to the rescue and we got the video. Again, I just adore this place and it will always hold such a special place in both my fiancé's and my hearts. We plan to make many more fun trips out and visit with our friends serving up such delicious wine! read more

My friends and I were on a wine tasting trip a couple Sundays ago. We wanted to try out a winery we hadn't been to before and thought this looked promising. It wasn't that crowded in the regular tasting room however the lady serving us kept forgetting what she had just poured and basically ignored us if she wasn't accidentally pouring the same thing into our glasses. It didn't take too long to figure out that she couldn't focus because she was somewhat inebriated. At one point my sister saw her move to the back part of the tasting bar (where she thought perhaps nobody could see her?) where she quickly downed half a glass of wine. To share a few sips of wine with people in the tasting room is one thing, to down glassfuls is another. Now as to the tasting: the three of us have very different palettes and unfortunately none of us were all that impressed with the wines that we tasted. Honestly, we didn't stay to taste them all because we were completely put off by the woman behind the counter. I wouldn't mind stopping by here another time to give it another go, but with the 5-6 favorites me and my friends have in that area, I'm not sure this will happen. read more

My sister and I drove past here as we were touring Apple Hill. We decided to stop in and check it out. It is a cute little tasting room with very friendly and engaging staff. The other patrons even knew the lady's name who was assisting everyone and seemed to be repeat customers. In addition to the obvious purpose of the tasting room, they had a lot of cute items for sale (ie napkins, clothes, glasses, etc.). There is also a nice sitting area outside with a boccie pit, tables and chairs. The tasting is complimentary and has about 10-12 wines on it. Who can hate on that?! We only had time to taste about half. They were good, but not great. That being said, I am not a huge wine buff. If you are ever in the area, I would recommend stopping in for a taste and a visit. read more

A beautiful setting in quaint Apple Hill. We recently visited and had such a wonderful afternoon. We tasted all of their elegant wines and ate cheese in a grassy area next to the vineyard. The surrounding views were amazing and it was a very comfortable and cozy setting to taste wine and relax. The staff was so friendly and welcoming we felt like family! Fenton sits atop a hill overlooking the rolling apple hill region. The winery has decent outdoor grounds for a picnic. The reds are very interesting here. They are hit or miss, and vary greatly by the year. This winery is only a few years old and seems to lack the consistency of experienced wineries... The service is very friendly and welcoming. Over time, much like good wine, I think this winery will age well and get better. read more

Really sweet people but the wine....geez...they didnt seem to get anything right. Was here for a Barrel Tasting this past weekend and the best part was the French Onion soup!! I do love free wine so Fenton Herriot did deliver on that point. Then again, almost every winery in the area offers free tastings. When we arrived, it was clear that the winery was understaffed. In fact, there was one person pouring for over a dozen people. She was also the cashier and it became apparent very quickly that it was too much for one person to handle. The tasting room is going through what looks like an expansion and it looks terrible. It's half finished, half painted, and only half-decent. Given the number of wineries in the area, this one is probably not worth a visit. read more

We had a wonderful picnic enjoying the wine and gazebos at the Fenton Herriott winery. We brought fantastic fish and chips from the London Best Fish and Chips restaurant in Placerville! Batter on the fish is light and cooked just right so it's not greasy. We took our take out boxes up to the Fenton Herriott winery and had a picnic with a cold bottle of their Gewurztraminer. I was there on 11/9 too and saw the people who commented earlier. These guests were extremely rude to the staff and very impatient. I think because they were there for a birthday they thought they rented out the entire place. I commend the staff for their patience and professionalism in dealing with these challenging individuals. It is quite clear why this winery has only had 2 yelp review since 2017. We chose to stop at Fenton Herriott with about 50 minutes left in the day. When we came in we asked if there was time to taste and the answer was yes. However, the employee was quite adamant the they were promptly closed at 5pm. I understand this. We asked for 3 tastings, not 4 because I was driving. When the tasting finally started it was lackluster and inattentive at best. At 3 wines in they took my cousins glass and told him that is not how you taste wine and cut off his tasting. My wife also made it through maybe 3 wines before she stepped away to use the restroom and the employee started asking if she was driving and informing one of our party that she should not be driving because it's the servers ass if my wife got into trouble. Having been the one who order 3 tastings not 4 because I was driving. It was in poor taste to harass the others in my party. Our goal was to buy a few bottles of wine and cheese and possibly enjoy one outside before heading home. We did not even make it through the tasting before we felt very unwelcome. I am sure I am in a minortity according to the winery and people who attend said winery. This does not change the fact we had a negative exoerience. And yes I did pay for the tastings even though only one person in the party got to finish the tasting. read more

After stopping at Lava Cap down the road and getting lousy service we left and came across this gem. Generally friendly people busy but waited on us with a smile and great customer service. We ended up buying a case 6 bottles of their reserve red, petite sirah, which is fantastic smooth and flavorful, and jakeway red, and 6 Chardonnay. I'm loving all of them. Their tasting room is simple and homey, but they they have a few good reds and a good port-style wine. I don't usually gravitate toward the Barbera, but their's is quite good that I ended-up going home with two bottles and a bottle of the late harvest. Their wine club offers a pretty good deal with a reasonable commitment, so I signed up. I hope their upcoming releases make me want to keep my membership. read more

Fenton is a special place. You will notice thier wines are very fruit forward with intense jam flavors, much more than other local vineyards. The wine maker really knows his craft and most wines are super small batch (150 cases or less). If you are looking for a yuppie wine tasting experience go somewhere else, but if you want wines that stand cork and foil above than the others and are well priced this is the place! Fenton Herriott was our last stop on the way out of Apple Hill. The vineyard was beautiful, along with the views. Their tasting room is quite small...anymore than about 10 people is pushing it. The women who worked there are a bit stuck up, and don't really make you feel too welcomed. Their Rose is quite gross, and their gwertzameiner is not too sweet. Their reds are drinkable, but I think that I would limit it to a glass...at the most. There are much better wineries in the area. read more

This has been one of my favorite wineries to visit in Placerville for years! The owner makes a wide enough variety of wines that there is surely something, or many somethings, for everyone. My favorites happen to be the Petit Syrah, Janeway (white), Jakeway (red), the Cab (which is absolutely fabulous right now), and the Rose. It's not your parents' rose, folks! The view is amazing. You can bring some snacks or lunch, buy a bottle of wine, and picnic in the large gazebo in the vineyard. Great pit stop or destination! Debbi, the tasting room manager, is all about customer service. She's personable and real. She knows her wine and knows the Placerville area like the back of her hand, including the wineries in the Apple Hill area, of course. I love that she sees the wineries in the area as a big family, and always has recommendations for visitors about where to visit next. I have heard many other Fenton Herriott regulars comment that they keep coming back for both the wines and to see Debbi. When you visit FH and Debbi is there, she'll talk to you like an old friend and, more often than not, she'll try to send you off with a hug. Don't miss this gem! read more

I first came here because it is right off the highway on the way to Tahoe. They have great wines for a really decent price. Good variety of red, white and dessert wines. My favorites are their Syrah and Tempranillo, yum! Their is a free tasting and a 'reserve' tasting for $5. The complimentary list is really long though and includes great wines. The staff has all been really helpful and friendly. They have a nice area for a picnic and even bocce ball courts. Will be coming back here soon, hopefully! read more

Another great little winery in the region, FH has some very characteristic reds that are very well done. Yes, the tasting room is small, but the quality of the wine and the approachability of the people working there makes up for it. I love their ports - one of the few places you can find a white port that's not overly sweet. Don't miss this place if you are taking a tour of the local wineries. read more
