We were a table of 6 last night. Husband ordered a hamburger which arrived burned. Daughters spilt chicken Parmesan and bread and butter. The chicken and bread and butter were good. The girls didn't like or eat the pasta. Other daughter had chicken tenders which she enjoyed. Boyfriend liked his cheeseburger and fries. I had a beet salad which was ok. Square Peg Pizza has a much better salad. We had one soda (husband complained it tasted like root beer), a pink lemonade (tasted off according to daughter), and an alcoholic beverage. The bill was $140 with the tip already included because we were a party of 6. We concluded that there are better places near campus to eat. The positives are that they are close to UConn's campus, have good fries, the alcoholic drink was good, and because it is next to Big Y, lots of parking. Word of mouth reviews helped me consider this place. When we arrived- I wasn't so sure as I wasn't expecting a strip mall kind of setting. We were pleasantly surprised, however. The food offerings were a nice mix of every day faves and foodie type choices. The house made chips and French onion dip were so yummy. The burger with bacon jam makes me want to top all my burgers that way. Husband had lamb once and wild boar the second time. I was tempted to get the burger again but instead opted for a shrimp scampi ravioli and was very pleased. Prices are reasonable. All in all a good addition to our collection of places to eat out when visiting our UCONN student. read more

We got a table next to the bar and they were very accommodating for our party of 6. The house margaritas were delicious the foam on top of the drink was different at first but very yummy. The burger was good and the Tuscan chicken was a bit dry but good. The bartender was very friendly and told us about the margarita with jalapeño juice, so we tried it and it was a bit spicy but it gave the margarita a nice kick to it. Have eaten here a number of times and the food is always good. Service however was not as expected on most recent visit: we were sat at an outside table by hostess but it was clear after other tables that were sat after us got service and drinks before us that we had been forgotten and we had to go inside and ask if we had been assigned a server who eventually came. at one point early in our meal we ordered an additional beverage and the server never brought it to us and in fact never returned to check on us at all. She also spilled the martini as she placed it on the table, never even apologized and just said "I'll get a napkin", then walked off and never brought a napkin. My fiancé had to go ask another server to bring us some napkins and we proceeded to wipe the table and the martini glass from the spill. We had to wait a while to get our appetizers, then once we got the appetizers the entres came right after so no time to enjoy the apps, once again pretty sure it was due to the server. It was not too busy and we watched her serve other peoples drinks and food and talk to coworkers and not being busy while we were waiting and even tried to get her attention and she was not trying to notice us. She was pleasant to speak to but was a bit unenthusiastic, customers want to have enthusiasm from the servers and not feel like the server is just there to finish her shift, she almost seemed like she was dazed or daydreaming or something. Serious debate over a 2 or 3 star rating, unfortunately, and really the only consideration for the 3 is that this is a very new restaurant and I want to give them the benefit of the doubt, but they have some issues to work out. The decor is a big positive, wood floors, brick accents, and a fun copper water feature in a lounge/bar area. A nice upscale bar area that is trendy and modern, and different from every other place in Willimantic. The staff, while nice, seemed inexperienced. 5 waters came for 6 people, and we had to ask for the last water. Our bar drinks came fast as did the appetizers, but issues there also. The Sip of Sunshine beer from Lawson's was not up to Sip of Sunshine standards, not sure if it was a keg issue or something else but after drinking this beer for the last 3 weeks at every opportunity available this didn't taste right. We ordered the crispy Brussels spouts which were very good with a teriyaki glaze, but we also ordered the polenta and meatballs, they were flavorful but the meatballs were cold. We had to ask if we could order a meal long after the appetizers were cleared. The fish tacos were really just the fish pieces from the fish and chips dish, way to big to be in a tortilla and the picked slaw was not good. 2 people ordered the curry, one with chicken that was good, one with seared ahi that was cooked through, the biggest problem was that both were lukewarm at best. We asked to have them heated and our waitress took them back to the kitchen and returned a short while later and they were still not warm. Another person had the quinoa with steak and was happy and the shrimp and bacon flatbread was good. But we also ordered 2 clam chowders that never came. The evening had moments of success and the potential is there. I will give them another shot, but not right away. read more

My wife & I thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at the brand new Fenton River Grill , located on Rte.195 in Mansfield's Big Y Plaza! This past Saturday we ventured out with great anticipation! As we entered we were greeted by the hostess who had informed us of an approximate 20 minute wait which later turned out to be more like a half hour. The restaurant had a nice waiting area as we were admiring the beautiful design of the restaurant & spacious bar. The lighting was just perfect and not too bright. Fenton River Grill was definitely upscale without being pretentious. When we were finally seated, We began with the shareable's; I chose the Dang quesadilla which consisted of blackened chicken,spinach and caramelized onions with jalapeños. It came with a nice spread and was just delicious. She ordered a housemaid margarita which according to her was outstanding. The restaurant had over 20 beers on tap of which now I have to kick myself because I failed to order one!!! Our waiter was really cool. Hi Gabe! For my entrée I ordered a flatbread consisting of Italian sausage and peppers mozzarella and basil. My wife ordered they roasted vegetable Panino. She let me have a bite and it tasted amazing with the melted goat cheese. My flat bread was perfectly cut and Italian sausage and peppers melted in my mouth. The Fenton River Grill's ambience was perfect. Our waiter Gabe took care of us as well. Unfortunately we were too full to try their desserts though their carrot cake sounded pretty darn good to me. I think this is a really great place to go if you're looking for a nicer sit down dinner in the area. We had a couple dietary restrictions in our party and the menu catered to everyone's needs. The food was really delicious too. I got a chicken Caesar salad and the chicken was so nice and crispy. The staff was friendly and took time to make sure that the heat lamps were working for us since we dined outdoors. The atmosphere is nice and their deck has cute lights up. I have decided that the diners that attend this considerably stoic restaurant don't know what good food is. We sat in the dining room and I had to return, to the car, to fetch a jacket. My companion already had two sweaters on. I was the third of June and it was a might chilly inside. There is no ambience that is in evidence. She had a chicken breast that had no flavour and which she definitely determined that it was previously frozen. This came with a pasta and mystery sauce. She told me that it tasted like hot water with catsup stirred into to make a slurry. It was tasteless. I thought it looked and tasted as Chef Boyardee, from a can. She is the one that made the comment, "The people that dine here must not know any better. This is just garbage food." I had chicken mixed with vegetables and pasta swimming in oil. A lifeguard should be on duty. It had very little meat and was mostly a type of spaghetti that must have been precooked and when needed dunked in boiling water, for 60 seconds. Anyone reading this and on this site must know that trick? Also, the meals came with no bread or other necessities that, I deem, should come with such meals. The meals were over $20 each...how about a ten cent roll and butter? How about a house salad? And now for the really insulting and mystifying part. I had two martinis. I asked them to be served 'up' and not on the 'rocks'. They were good and came the way I asked. When the bill arrived we noticed an extra $4 attached to the drink order. I asked, "What is this this?" The waitress didn't know the answer, ergo; a trip to the bartender. Her return answer, "The bartender said that because there was no ice or mixer he had to put more gin into the glass to make it look full." Never, never, never, in my existence have I ever heard of such shenanigans. It was thievery, unprofessional, chicanery and a way to pad the tab. I should have been forewarned of such an insult to my wallet and tenet of right and wrong. There was debating the $4...but I lost. So much for the customer is always correct. Never will I return. There are better places in the area and I will not return to be made light of. Go there is you want your senses insulted. The words pedestrian and plebian came to mind upon our parting from said Fenton River Grill. Yeah, it's a grill, not a restaurant. As for the service: The waitresses were efficient and pleasant. Not their fault, they are certainly not in any position of authority, to correct insults to customers. read more

Stopped in for dinner with friends. Greeted promptly by the hostess as we got out of the car. We were seated outside and server acknowledged us immediately and was back in no time with our drink orders. Menu had plenty of items to choose from. We were a party of four. We ordered the calamari appetizer and onion soup for starters. Calamari appeared to be well cooked (friend ordered them, didn't try them myself) based on their appearance. The onion soup arrived so hot that it had to sit for several minutes before even being able to try it. Once I did it was a disappointment. Plenty of onions, cheese, and baguette pieces but not much flavor. Not sure I could say it was even an average onion soup. Other items ordered were the shrimp ravioli, Caesar salad with chicken, and the root beer short ribs. I ordered the fish and chips. Shrimp ravioli was a little odd, you'd expect the shrimp in the ravioli but these had the shrimp just placed on top of the ravioli. Comment was the ravioli were nothing special. Report on the short ribs was that they were great. Caesar was okay but not a lot of chicken and the flavor was alright. The fish came with a heavy, very greasy breading leaving a lot of oil on the platter. Wouldn't recommend it because of the grease. Fish was flaky once you knocked off the breading. The chips were nice and crispy and done well. There was also a large portion of coleslaw which had a nice flavor and crunch to it. Was our first time at the restaurant and the opinion of the group is that we probably wouldn't be back. read more

The food here is pretty good but the service is horrendous. Expect long wait times for tables, having parties who came in after you seated first, and long waits for a waiter once you sit down. To avoid this, it is best to come on weekdays when there is less of a crowd. Some of the food is good but avoid the fish tacos as it is just fish n chips in a tortilla and the creme brûlée where the custard was good but there was sugar in the raw poorly burnt and fully chunky strewn on top. All in all, this place is fine for a nicer bar experience but is not the fine dining experience their prices promise. Personally, I think one would be better off going to 85 Main-- another establishment owned by the same owners-- in Putnam which lives up to everything the Fenton wishes it could be. read more

In spite of the fact that there were clearly tables not marked reserved we were told by the hostess we would have to wait 20 minutes for a table for 2. The impression I got that was we were not acceptably dressed enough for the manager to allow us to sit at a window table on Saturday night. We left. Went here on a Wednesday right at noon time. We wanted to have lunch, but not fast food crap, but a restaurant setting. First impression is that it looks clean,which it is, and above average, not a diner dive, but not a chain like Chili's or Applebee's. We were seated and waited almost 5 minutes for our waiter to come over and take drink orders. We decided to do burgers, I ordered the Fenton river (house burger) and my wife ordered the steak burger. I ordered house chips and she went with the fries. As we sat there, we both commented on how cold it was there, and also heard the same thing from the table behind me. This wasn't a draft, but the whole place was uncomfortably cold. I noticed this on the way to the bathroom (which was exceptionally clean.) I know trying to heat a place isn't easy at this time, but people will remember this. It was in the mid 40's outside, so there shouldn't be an issue to raise the temp. We are now going on close to 25 minutes when the food arrived. Both burgers were medium rare as ordered, and very moist. The bacon jam they used on the Fenton river burger was excellent. My wife said her burger was also good. Fries were run of the mill, but the chips stood out. I would recommend them over the fries hands down. Total bill for 2 burgers and 2 cokes came to almost $38 w/o tip. The whole menu was priced on the high side, but if the other items were like this burger , then it may be worth it. I would like to have given it 3 1/2 stars, but I can't. If it wasn't for the long wait time, with the place at 75% capacity and the heat set really low, then maybe this would be a 4 star review. read more

I was a little torn on my review for this spot, because I loved so much, and want to bump them up, but there were some stuff keeping me from a full 5 stars. So, here is the breakdown... 5 Star Stuff: -Brussel Sprouts appetizer. It's AMAZING. There's a soy lime glaze and they're perfectly crispy and roasted (but also maybe fried?) -Cocktails. Very nicely done, good price. -French fries and chips - yum. -Short rib sandwich, banh mi, veggie sandwich - all rave reviews. -Personality of our server. She was great. 4 Star Stuff: -Salads were good, wish my marinated seafood salad had a bit more seafood, but everything was fresh and delicious! -Wine selection was not bad! Beer drafts list had a good variety too, but some were kicked and it wasn't mentioned on the list. 3 Star Stuff: -Speed of stuff coming out, and some things being forgotten. Bar was a little backed up at times. -One person bathrooms in the restaurant made for long waits. But all in all, we would definitely be back!! A great choice for the area. read more

I'm not sure why people give this place such low marks. We've been going here just about every weekend now, I think it's our new favorite place. Excellent tap list (which is a plus for me), and the bar staff is very knowledgeable about all the beers. My Wife usually gets one of the special cocktails. The Gin Basil Smash is excellent. We've been ordering off from the specials menu for the last three or four visits. The variation every day is nice, always something new and interesting! The "Crispy Brussel Sprouts" and "House Fried Chips & Dip" are our favorite appetizers. The Curry Udon Noodle Bowl is also a memorable dish. Went there this past week with a friend from out of town. Great Service. Lousy Food. Really awful grilled chicken breast sandwich. Chicken was tough, tasteless , stringy and totally inedible. Can't believe the cook would send this out to a customer. Have no idea how a boneless breast could be so tough. Politely had the waitress put the entire meal in a to-go container and quickly paid and left. I'm sure that the chicken was in the deep freeze for months while everything was closed. Since I had a guest I didn't say anything to the waitress. Last thing I'd do is talk to a manager. The waitstaff lives on their tips and I respect that. Beer selection is great but way over priced for this area (this isn't 85 main in Putnam folks). Food is good but again, way over priced. It's not farm to table so I don't understand the 85 main st. prices at all. We stopped going to 85 main because of the prices. Stopped going here after a dozen tries. Sorry. I've only been here twice and really enjoyed it here. It's got a comfortable warm setting with a long beautiful wrap around bar. I felt cozy in a tee shirt even on these crisp December nights. Tyler behind the bar is an impressive mixologist...he's experimental, curious and talented. Have him make you one of his originals. Just tell him what flavors you favor in your cocktails and he will come up with an original imbibation just for you. Hopefully more 5 star reviews will offsets the too many unfair low reviews that don't reflect the reality of this little gem in Mansfield. read more

We went for Happy hour referred by a friend. We actually had a good time and enjoyed the atmosphere as well as the food, service and music. The happy hour menu is not very big but we did decide to try the buffalo wings which were really good. They were cooked to perfection according to what we like, crispy and not greasy. My husband tried the New England clam chowder which he did enjoy but said it was not the best he ever had. Then we both had a chicken Cesar salad with extra dressing which was crisp and fresh with really tender grilled chicken.
