I went to go get a smog check and I was told there were a bunch of things wrong with my car. First I thought oh great my lucky day, but am beginning to realize that the mechanics were trying to get me to replace things that didn't need to be replaced. I am a female college student and I feel like I was taken advantage of! I was told by the mechanic there, " I can talk to your dad if you want, sometimes girls just aren't as good at understanding this car stuff". My dad of course living in another state believed the guy when he said that my pads need to be repacked because it is normal wear and tear on a car. First the brakes, I was told my pads and rotors needed to be changed and my pads were down to the metal and it was urgent. I was reluctant to spend $1,100 so I bought the parts myself and had my family friend who is a mechanic and engineer replace them. I spent 200 dollars on parts and Today when we took off my wheels, lo and behold my pads were no where close to being DOWN TO THE METAL!! They are about half way used and still have quite a while until they would need to be urgently replaced. Aside from the brakes I was told my u-joints need to be replaced and my radiator needs to be replaced. All these fixes were said with great urgency! Now I have to go to other mechanics to see if these other problems actually exist! Moral of the story be careful and I recommend not going to them or if you do getting a second opinion! And if you are a women or a college student watch out for mechanics who are happy to rip people off to get money!!! read more

My SO recommended Fernando, and I couldn't be happier with the service! Although most of the reviews here focus on the smog check, I actually went in for an oil and filter change. Fernando was extremely professional, and everyone onsite was wearing a mask. The operation itself is small, something that I like to see especially during a pandemic when limiting your exposure to different people is crucial. The shop itself looked super clean and organized, and it's clear that Fernando has an attention to detail. Also, Fernando graciously honored my request to have the windows down during the service, allowing me to blow the air out of the car in the parking lot after the service was completed. I have to admit that I was hesitant to take my car anywhere to be serviced due to the risk of COVID, but my fears went away when I saw how carefully he handled everything. Fernando is a class-act. Not only did he squeeze my smog check appointment in at the last minute, I later realized he booked it to start at their closing time (i.e., he stayed late on my behalf). The ease of the smog check itself would have made this a remarkably breezy experience... ... but then as I was leaving I asked his opinion about a noise my car was making (that a different mechanic had been unable to diagnose). My first time taking my vehicle to Fernando's. My usual shop for smog charges a tiny bit less but I wanted to add in an oil change. The other shop quoted me twice for that than Fernando so that made the choice easy. Super easy drop-off (plenty of parking for the shop and easy turn-around, which isn't the case for all the shops in this area), receptionist was friendly and Fernando chatted with me a bit as I was leaving. Everyone there wore masks, even while working on the cars. Everything was done in the timeframe they estimated and they sent my smog info electronically to the DMV. Fernando discussed the inspection they did on my car at pickup and took the time to answer all of my questions. What can I say. Fernando is just pure awesome. He's the owner and technician of this shop. I recently bought a 2nd "new" used mustang that I bought from LA and needed a smog check for registration. I've been in the automotive industry myself for 6 years as a tech and honestly Fernando is hands-down the friendliest, most professional, and most chill dude I've ever met in the industry. I previously took my car elsewhere and started noticing that their attitude wasn't friendly anymore so I've been looking for a new smog shop and came upon Fernando's shop one day. I was delivering to Fernando once on a parts run and when I walked in the office it was just super clean AF (as f***). His office and office furniture, benches outside and even his parking lot!! LOL. When I met him, man he just had the friendliest smile on his face that said "Yo, hows it going. I'm Fernando how can I help you and your car today?" We talked about my car and stuff and why I needed the smog check. He made me feel like a long time friend. He demonstrated interest in a new customer, he cared about the work, was super quick, and was able to multi-task. After much yelp research, we stumbled upon Fernando's Smog Check which had stelar reviews. We called in and received an estimate of $50 with tax, as a total. Not bad for the SB/Goleta area. We drove in, its a little hidden in the very back of Olney St. on the left side (you have to pass the cementing/gravel? area). I'm always worried my grandparents will get hustled because they are 80+ living on their own, so I like to go and check things out. Fernando's Smog check is a very small location, but very efficient. Fernando himself, is a great, friendly guy. The smog check took about 10 mins, we didn't wait long at all. We were charged the exact quote of $50, no more or less.
