Different Cheesesteak'esque sandwich #1238. I went at happy hour. I miss happy hour. $8 burnt ends sandwich. $7 Old Fashion. You know I love those prices. I love the decor. The sandwich comes with spicy slaw. I am spicy adverse, and I liked this slaw. It was more flavorful than spicy. I liked the Fette Sau sweet sauce. You gotta love a nice soft potato roll. Good day to be me.

What a lunch! Thought I'd get a sandwich but opted for half a rack of ribs and mac and cheese instead. Mack and cheese was creamy and maybe broiled (wouldn't the paper burn? To make a lovely crust. Ribs were perfect for me. Liked both their sweet and spicy sauces. Dining room is well air conditioned and comfortable, barn like. Nicely done.

Being from Kansas City I have an appreciation from bbq. I have walked past fette sau many times and initially wrote it off. I'm glad I didn't this time. This was a great find they do bbq well and also have a great bar area serving beer and cocktails. I got their old fashioned and it was delicious. They have all the staples you would expect from a bbq establishment. They were sadly out of burnt ends when I went. Their Kansas City wings were excellent served in a sweet and tangy sauce. Their brisket and pulled pork were flavorful and moist and weren't dry. These guys know how to bbq and it felt like a little bit of home when I went there.

Memorial Day automatically gives me BBQ vibes, so it was a no brainer to find one of the best spots in Philly for dinner. I stopped by Fette Sau years ago and grabbed takeout, but never dined at the establishment. I wanted to change that on Memorial Day. Placing an order at the restaurant was easy because the line wasn't long. We stepped right up and grabbed a number for our table then proceeded to place our order. After looking over the menu, we opted to go with a "family style meal." Our meal was "Pigs in a Clover," and it consisted of 1/2 of ribs, pulled pork, mac n cheese, collard greens, potato salad, spicy slaw, broccoli salad, and burnt end baked beans. Sounds like a lot?! It was. Haha!! We grabbed an Old Fashioned and Fishtown Punch for our drinks. All of the outdoor tables were taken, but there were plenty of tables inside. We grabbed a table next to the window that overlooked the seating area outside. Our drinks arrived quickly, which was a good sign. My Fishtown Punch was delicious, but very small. The glass was maybe 1/4 full, so it didn't last very long. My partner liked his Old Fashioned. It took a while for the food to arrive, but the wait was worth it. After receiving our feast, we dove right in. I found the ribs to be very tender. They were meaty, smokey, well seasoned and tender. I enjoyed the house sweet sauce and felt it was a great addition. The pulled pork was equally tasty. Next up, the burnt end baked beans. I found the beans to be savory with a little heat. I really liked them as a side. I moved on to the mac n cheese. I absolutely loved this side. The mac n cheese had the perfect texture. The cheese to noodle ratio was spot on, which made the mac n cheese creamy simply delicious. Now, I like potato salad, but didn't think the potato salad at Fette Sau was a fav. I have never been a fan of German potato salad, so I moved on from it FAST! I felt the same way about the collard greens. They simply lacked flavor and left a lot to be desired. After trying most of our meal, I skipped the broccoli salad and spicy slaw (sorry, I can't review this items). The Pigs in a Clover was a great option and we had plenty leftover for the next day. We were very happy with our Fette Sau BBQ experience and would recommend it to anyone looking for decent BBQ in the city.

Have wanted to come here for a while and finally made it in, luckily during their afternoon happy hour. The theme is 100% on point, that is done very well. You go up to the counter, take a number, and order everything. Someone will then bring it to you after you sat at a table or outside. Up to this point everything was great. Menu features a lot of barbecue choices and sides. The happy hour specials are good, I'd recommend trying things off that. Everything was just okay. Meat itself was fine, though a bit bland. Barbecue sauces are provided which do help. Deviled eggs and sweet mash also fine. Overall I'd say food was 3/5 but the experience was 5/5. Thanks

While the barbecue isn't particularly unique, everything tasted good and there was plenty of food for group of 6 (we got the family dinner). My favorite thing about the restaurant is the interior, it's a very nice vibe that is perfect for a casual Friday night out with friends or family. It's self serve style, which makes it easy to get drinks at the bar or order extra food if needed. Even though the food wasn't the star of the show, I would definitely come back because the overall experience was greater than the sum of its parts.

I'd been anxiously awaiting to visit Fette Sau since I've been in Philly, and finally got the opportunity to go last night. What a disappointment. I'd heard so much about it - and wanted so badly to like it, but it wasn't meant to be. Upon arrival, you see the choices behind a counter, which visually, looked, for lack of a better word, unappetizing. The beans looked liked they'd been scraped all day, with a residual amount that looked 'leftover'. The ribs looked dried out, and they were. There were a few drumsticks that also looked dried out, but we didn't try those. To be fair, the brisket was lean and tender, but lacked flavor - no smokiness, no juice, no burnt edges - it looked like my Mom's sliced brisket. The ribs - well - it was difficult to believe, the picture doesn't really reflect the fact there was very little meat on several of them. They had more flavor than the brisket, but were also dry. The Mac and Cheese tasted fine and was cheesy, but not creamy.

Came for happy hour with co-workers. Super friendly staff and chill vibes. Satisfied with flavor and portion of food options and will likely come again!

This is amazing BBQ - fantastic pulled pork and brisket plus delicious Mac and cheese. Very cute rustic vibes, a full bar, and great happy hour deals. You have to be assigned a table at the hostess stand and then go up and order food yourself, and then pay at the bar, so a little clunky but totally worth it for the food.

Came with a party of 6 towards the end of happy hour. The restaurant is huge and perfect for groups! Unique experience where utensils, plates, water is self-served. You walk up to the counter to order food and the bar for drinks and they'll bring food out to the table. For the 6 of us, we ordered the family BBQ set. Additionally, we got cornbread, zucchini, items off the happy hour menu (chicken legs, deviled eggs). The pulled pork and brisket is tender, smokey, and well seasoned. The rib was delicious but it wasn't as tender and soft as I would expect. The spicy sausage was unremarkable. I wouldn't personally get the chicken legs from the happy hour menu. However, the deviled eggs were so delicious! It was creamy and there was horseradish mixed in. For the sides, the potato salad was not up my alley at all; it was super mustardy and sour. The coleslaw was also relatively sour but crunchy and refreshing. Broccoli salad was pretty standard, again more sour tones. Beans were flavorful with the burnt ends but personally too salty for me. There was a big fatty piece of meat in it. The Mac & cheese was standard. I was very surprised that the collard greens were SO delicious and well seasoned. It was not bitter at all. Cookies were ok. Overall, the food was just okay but the vibes were so awesome. I would come here for big groups and to try the happy hour.

My friend and I came to Fette Sau for happy hour. Their happy hour runs until 7pm which I appreciate. This restaurant is not a sit down and be served restaurant. You find a table and order at the register when you're ready and order at the bar for your drinks. They give you a number for the food runners to bring your food. Silverware and water you would have to grab on your own as well. It's a very interesting concept. The food was ok. We ordered the burnt end sandwich, mac and cheese, and deviled eggs. Everything was pretty mediocre. The chicken legs did need some more flavor. It was pretty bland so I would recommend eating it with the bbq sauces and vinegar on the table. The sandwich, deviled eggs and mac and cheese were pretty mediocre as well. The spicy slaw was the best thing in my opinion, spicy and vinegary. The drinks were also not the best. My friend had the old fashion since on Wednesdays they have $5 old fashion, and I guess you pay for what you get, she did not enjoy her old fashion. I got the peach which is a non-alcoholic drink and it was nothing special. Overall if you're looking for a quick and cheap bbq I would recommend this place for happy hour, but I wouldn't come outside of happy hour to pay full price for these items.

Delicious food, great drinks. We tucked ourselves in a corner and had a great evening. Employees were super kind and offered great suggestions. Humor too! Huge selection of whiskey, great mixed drinks too.

I am always on the search for good bbq meat. Traveled to the South for bbq including Texas, Missouri, NC and more and looking for something comparable in Philly. Fette Sau is the closest I could find that I would consider solid good bbq. Had the brisket and ribs and overall they satisfied my craving after an intense work-out in Fishtown. I was hoping for a smokier taste from the brisket but it did it's job. All in all, it's a chill vibe to have bbq (although pricey) with a beer and it's also dog friendly.

Ask the Community - Fette Sau

Are the sauces on the meat or on the side? Are the sauces tomato based?

Sauces are def on the side. There are three.. All may have a LITTLE tomato (the vinegar sauce just for color.) The KC style sauce is sweet / thick. Personally, the meat is so good it hardly needs sauce..

Are any of the sides vegetarian? Thanks so much!!

They have Mac and cheese, veggies, potatoes I'm sure you can find some

I can't go often, since it's not that close to me, but when I go, I typically order the rib platter. I typically get the same sides (beans and mac n cheese) along with cornbread. It is certainly more deserving than my initial 3 star review on my successive visits, but I never updated my review. Not everyone will love the sauce, which tastes more tomato-based, but that's okay. As I've gotten older, I appreciate it more. It's almost like... they put... ketchup... in the sauce... and if that's what it is, I'm fine with it. It tastes good. The ribs on that initial visit were tough; that's not a lie. On three visits afterwards, it was not as tough as the first time. On my most recent visit today, the ribs were really, really tender. Like... this is how tender ribs should be. The only difference between my experiences before versus now is I placed a takeout order this time whereas I always ate at the restaurant before. If takeout will always yield the freshest, most tender ribs, I'm good with ordering takeout from now on. The ribs were tender to the point of being delicate. They were SO GOOD. Even the rib that looked like it could've been tough was tender. That's how you know ribs are good. I would give 5 stars for just the ribs alone, but aha... there were more items... baked beans... SO GOOD... they have sausage bits in them. Cornbread... baked fresh and cut in front of my eyes... WARM, SOFT, FLUFFY.... SOoo GOOOOD... the mac n cheese... well, ehhh... can't win them all... it was just mac n cheese. I have to remember to order something other than mac n cheese next time, but I always forget because I don't go here often enough. Still, this is a 5 star meal all the way and I look forward to more meals like this. I thought I had to drive over to Camden all this time to get tender ribs. Let's say that all again... the ribs are damn good... tender and juicy. Yums. Go get some. Parking lot on the premises. Hope you get the same experience I just did.

We're never great at eating our money's worth, so the pay-as-you-go setup felt like a better fit. We got the favorite set for two, which ended up being plenty. The biggest highlight right away: they grill everything for you. KBBQ is just better when you can sit back and eat instead of managing the grill yourself. They also use a back grill to keep things moving, so there's barely any pause between rounds of meat. It felt really efficient. Also, the place is surprisingly clean and doesn't have that heavy "you're going to smell like smoke for the next 5 hours" vibe, which I really appreciated. Somehow they keep it all under control even with constant grilling. Service-wise, the staff were attentive and clearly working hard, especially since it seemed a bit understaffed. That said, my friend did feel a little uncomfortable at times. There were a few moments where it felt like we were being watched closely, almost like they were worried about a dine-and-dash situation, and we were asked multiple times if we had paid. I personally read it more as things being slightly disorganized with a small team juggling cooking, serving, and payments, but I can see how it might come across differently depending on how you interpret it. Food-wise, the meat was very good, but the banchan really stood out to me. The cabbage salad with a gingery soy dressing was super refreshing and cut through the richness of the meat perfectly. Free refills on banchan are always a win too. I also liked that the grill came with corn cheese, egg, and sprouts, nice extras you don't always get. The corn cheese wasn't as sweet as I expected, and the egg was a bit on the salty side, but still enjoyable. The tilted grill setup was another plus since it lets the grease drain away, so the meal didn't feel overly heavy like some AYCE spots. Overall, it was a really fun experience. A bit pricey, but worth it for the quality and how easy the whole meal felt. Just something to be aware of with the service dynamic depending on how sensitive you are to that kind of thing.

The waffle was a waffle but the bacon burnt ends were amazing!! So good I would have eaten a plate of just them. The French toast comes four ways with an option of a sample plate of one of each. It's a great way to try them all. There would be no way I could eat a full plate of any of them due to the size of the toast and the richness of the toppings. My favorite was of course was the bacon. The Carmel bacon burger was hands down a mouthful of such flavor that all of the meat eaters at the table couldn't put it down. Rich Carmel sauce, thick cooked bacon with an amazing perfect-fully cooked burger. I would order it again with a side of burnt ends for the best combination.

I've been wanting to come here for a year and really had high hopes for it. The restaurant is…read morebeautifully decorated and cleanly kept. The host/bartender and server were both very nice. I'm not sure if the server was new but she didn't seem very familiar with their menu, though she did say she'd ask if we had questions. I ordered a $19 cocktail and asked them to make it less sweet but it was still very sweet and syrupy, so I didn't even really drink it. We ordered the hanging bacon for $19 which I was excited about. For the price and hype, I kind of thought it would be fancy or thick-cut bacon, but it was just regular thin bacon like you get at the grocery store. I will say it was cooked well, the sweet habanero sauce was excellent, and the cornbread underneath the bacon was good too. Just seemed kind of overpriced and hyped. I tried to order the bacon and lobster Alfredo. The server came back and said they were out of lobster so I asked for another menu. My friend tried to order the burnt ends entree, but they were out of that, too. They were out of asparagus so the server said they would substitute broccoli instead. We ordered the blackened salmon that was supposed to have a mango salsa topping. It came with mashed potatoes and asparagus (sub broc). However, it was plain when it got dropped off and I later asked the server about the salsa and was told they were out of salsa as well. I ended up using the habanero sauce that came with the hanging bacon to add a little flavor to the dish. It would have been a nice mention when they dropped the food off instead of me having to ask for it. The other entree we got was like a braised pork on mashed potatoes with cornbread. The server said "that comes with asparagus so would you like the broccoli instead?" I told her, "the menu doesn't say it comes with that but if so, I guess sub the broccoli." When she brought that dish to us, she said "I asked the chef to put broccoli on because you asked for it." I was annoyed because I already had told her the menu didn't say anything about a vegetable with that dish. They did charge me $3 extra for the "added" broccoli. It wasn't the price, but that the server was not knowledgeable about the menu, offered me something I questioned her specifically about, and then charged me extra for it as if I asked for it. I would like to reiterate, though, that she was very sweet throughout. The lack of menu items on a menu that isn't that big, and has some repeats between the appetizers and entrees, was laughable by the end. The food that we did get was cooked well and tasted fine, but was pretty basic and in my opinion, overpriced for what it was. I think it would avoid confusion and disappointment if the server told you what they were out of when you sat down, so you could make an informed menu choice, as I've had this happen at other restaurants where it was not a big deal that they were out of a dish or item. But this place was out of so many things on a Thursday night. I was really hoping this would be a regular neighborhood place for me, but I will not be back.
