Used to be a nice place to eat. The decor is beautiful and great. However, the food has gone majorly downhill. Our group ordered appetizers and drinks and some food. The Artichoke dip was good, but the pita bread that came with it felt stale, hard and cold. The other apps were fine. We also ordered 3 burgers. They were over cooked, tasteless and super oily. So much so that the grease pooled on the lettuce under the patty. NONE of us ate more than half of the burger. It was obvious that the waitress knew something as no one asked how the food was. We meet here because its a central place and for the most part and our party mainly in the past just ordered drinks. I wouldn't recommend this place. read more

Got to the restaurant at 6pm (Monday), told there would be a 20-30 minute wait. After 45-50 minutes later, we were finally seated after watching multiple groups come in and get seated first. Once we were seated we noticed that there were multiple open tables. It took a few minutes before the server came over to take our order. At least the food was good. read more

We had such a wonderful dinner tonight celebrating a birthday! We could make reservations, which was a plus, and we were seated immediately. Service was courteous and quick. Prior to ordering, we ordered the lobster rolls as our appetizer. Excellent choice and enough for 3 to share. I ordered the walleye and it was delicious. Came with mashed potatoes and green beans. Others ordered the hamburger and fries, and blacken chicken Alfredo. A free dessert was offered for the birthday and the chocolate brownie was the choice. Very rich and tasty! Only change would be to request a table near the window....the view is awesome. read more

Meal with a magnificent view. Looks like a strip mall but with a great surprise in the backyard. Service was tremendous. My husband said the fish tacos were the best he ever had. The apricot salmon was exquisite. A great stop on our drive from Chicago to Detroit. read more

We used to love it here! Convenient location right off the highway. Signage is impossible to spot (red on red, hidden behind trees!), so you'd better be sure you know where you are going! We love the lodge-like atmosphere and view. We recently dined outside and it was clear that the tables hadn't been wiped and patio hadn't been swept that day. Umbrellas were cheap and stained. No big deal--we like the food here....until now. Hubby ordered the chicken skewers, which had enough chicken to equal a chicken tender along with undercooked bacon, accompanied by soggy vegetables. I ordered a cup of chicken and bean soup, under-seasoned and flavorless, and a grilled peach, raspberry and arugula salad. Server never asked if I wanted an entree salad or side salad so I ended up with the latter. Three slices of underripe peaches and three raspberries with a handful of arugula and a sprinkling of feta. Our server never brought bread to the table and never asked how our meal was. We both left hungry and disappointed. read more

Took forever to get service -- and the same to get a drink - finally went to the bar and got my own. Went to Fieldstone Grill for dinner to celebrate a B-day. Ordered a bottle of wine off the very limited wine list and brought a special bottle from my cellar to have with dinner. When we asked about the corkage fee we were told it was $55. I've paid corkage close to a dozen times at restaurants in Kalamazoo and never paid more than $35 (which came with high quality decanting and stemware not Libby quality stemware). Decent food, but a bad wine policy. We won't be going back anytime soon. read more

After a bad experience in January, we decided to try this place one more time. Let's start off with our wait staff was great! Management on the other hand lacks! My husband ordered a $25 steak that came out cold, my pizza came out completely wrong and all that came out of the kitchen correct was 2 mediocre kids meals. All in all our 4 meals came out at 3 separate times and my husband's filet was warmed in the microwave. Management never came over to apologize and we were offered 1 free dessert for our inconvenience. We declined and they did end up taking off our $10 pizza. Paid $90 for a dinner we couldn't even eat at the same time! Shame on you Fieldstone grill who prides themselves on being a fine dining experience. read more

Always love going to Fieldstone and have always been happy with the food. However, recently I ordered the duck leg and it was overcooked and dry. It tasted like it had been cooked a day or two before. The waiter was very attentive when I told him the problem and asked if I wanted to speak to the manager. I told him "no" because I did eat the food and do love this restaurant. I was disappointed though overall and no adjustments were made to the bill. The two stars are for this date only. Previously I would have always rated at least 4 stars. read more

My husband & I went for an early Valentine's Day lunch after remembering how good the food was a year earlier. Upon arriving, the host was on the phone, didn't look up or acknowledge us, and didn't greet us. We sat there for about 3 minutes in silence as he waited to leave a message on someone's voicemail. When finished, he looked up and said "2?" We said yes, and he bolted off with 2 menus around a corner. By the time we rounded the same corner, he was already on his way back up to the hostess stand. We had to look for the table that had 2 menus on it. I felt so uncomfortable, like he couldn't be bothered with seating us. It was NOT busy. Such poor customer service for such a seemingly lovely restaurant. The only reason I gave it 3 stars instead of 5, as customer service is very important in the overall dining experience. That being said, the food was delicious and our waitress was very sweet. I later came to find out that it was the MANAGER that seated us.....even more ridiculous. read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Portage. My wife and I regularly go on Millenium Monday's where you get 30% off your food bill (it's also half-off martini night). I've tried numerous items on their menu and seasonal specials and have never been disappointed. My all-time favorite though is the Fieldstone Steak. Each time I order it, it is cooked to perfection and tastes great every time. Our favorite appetizer is the lobster rolls. The tiramisu is spot-on as well. The atmosphere is great. Make sure you call ahead on Mondays as it gets pretty busy and the wait can be pretty substantial without reservations. read more

So I have no idea what happened to this restaurant since we were there on Valentine's Day, but what a disappointment on our most recent visit and especially on our daughter's birthday celebration. So first, I called for a reservation a week earlier and asked for a window view table. Of course, we get there, no such request noted so we get seated in a "nook" area. Nice enough, especially with an infant in tow, but not what I requested. Second, the menu is all new to us at least and it is blah. What used to be an exciting and surprising menu is now run of the mill: steaks - filet, sirloin, ribeye, beef tenderloin medallions; fish - salmon, perch...you get the idea. I can get these dishes at any restaurant. One of the terrific dishes used to be a rainbow trout...no more. Third, the steaks, beef tenderloin and ribeye, at least for my wife and I, were severely lacking in flavor. The sauces/sauteed mushrooms could not make up for a lack of proper seasoning. Our daughter thought her filet was fine as did my son-in-law. they were certainly not wowed. Another change on the menu, a la carte sides. High end restaurant a la Chop House, ok, Fieldstone, get over yourself. The one outstanding takeaway was our server, Emmanuel. He was professional, friendly and did a great job of managing our expectations as to the time frame of food arriving because there was a large party present in another part of the restaurant. Finally, our daughter's birthday was not acknowledged in any way (it was noted at the time of reservations and on the reservation sheet), no offer of a free dessert, etc. What a huge disappointment as we'd had some enjoyable culinary experiences in times past. I was subsequently made aware that they had a change of chefs and, clearly menu. Sadly or gladly, my money will be spent elsewhere going forward. What a shame. read more

This is my favourite restaurant in the Portage area. The ambience is formal but relaxed with great outdoor views and decor. The food is phenomenal; I have yet to try a dish I don't care for. Their Caesar salad is the best I've ever had and they're selection of food is diverse and savory, from fish to pot roast or lobster to ratatouille. We really like the Field Stone Grill for lunch. They are super casual and during the week around 11:30 we can take our 3 year old nephew and sit by the big windows because they aren't busy. Very pretty location and the patio has a beautiful view but the food is only so-so. I had the vegetable ratatouille which was pretty flavorless but cost $14.95 and came without sides. I've made a similar dish at home that was tastier and cost less than $15 to feed my husband and me with leftovers. My husband had the trout and he enjoyed his meal much more. Perhaps this place just isn't ideal for vegetarians, but it does have a beautiful ambiance. I would go back for drinks/desserts but not dinner. read more

Great menu options. We ordered the veggie chips - they were not crisp. The waiter immediately replaced them. Portions are very generous - you can eat an appetizer as a meal. The hummus of the day was very good and I ate on it for two more days! My only disappointment was that my salad came dressed rather than with the dressing on the side. The service was great but we only went 1 for 2 on our meals. The filet was delicious and cooked perfectly. Although "bacon wrapped" apparently means "just put a piece of bacon on top" here. We went there a few months ago. The smoked fish dip, I think it was whitefish, was wonderful. I had the steak was cooked perfectly and my partner had something else. Both were wonderful. We went back recently. I don't know if the freezer was just acting up or what was going on. The bread tasted old. And The fish dip was different and tasted freezer burned. We had a pasta for dinner that was just average. I didn't get the steak this time so I don't know if that's still good. Not sure if it was a one time deal but transverse had similar experiences. When coming back to the area to visit friends & family, I thoroughly enjoyed dinner here. It has one of the nicest views of any restaurant in Portage/Kalamazoo area. The food was solid. The wine was discounted that night for some sort of happy hour, but the wine list could be better. The stars are for setting and staff only. Ordered the Spinach Artichoke dip. It was basically cream soup with a few leaves of wilted spinach and some artichoke pieces thrown in. Could not "dip it" at all. The Pita chips were tasty and fresh with a little crispness to them though. Sent it back for another thicker one. It came back with so much flour added that it tasted like wallpaper paste and the chips were limp. Next the entree I ordered was the pan seared salmon with oven roasted Brussels sprouts. It also had little dumplings or hush puppies and heirloom potatoes. Well the salmon was overdone and tasted as if it were deep fried for a bit. It was served over the sprouts and potatoes and dumplings. The bottom of the plate was at least 1/2 inch deep with oil! The Brussels sprouts were burned and the dumplings were doughy and I think there were pieces of bacon and onion too swimming in that deep oil. Yuk! Couldn't eat any of it and boxed up the salmon to put on a salad later at home. Second bad experience for me. Not coming back anytime soon. read more

This place was a major disappointment. Reasons stated below: 1) We were a party of 10 and the place was less than half full. The service was adequate at best. Steady, but extremely slow; 2) the food was mediocre for a place that charges a premium. I got a the Mojo Pork Chop and it was so small it looked like it came from a Hardee's breakfast sandwich. 17 bucks . Not worth the money; 3) we complained to the hostess and the end of our meal all she could say was "I wish you would have complained earlier." What do you think I am doing now? Anyhow the place is a total waste of money. Find somewhere else to eat for a premium price. read more
