It's normal to wait in line only because of many other people are picking up their orders or just waiting for the fresh ladyfingers or their famous "pan de sol" dinner roll that you can literally eat with anything. It goes with any dish. It's great to make mini sandwiches. Always check the counter they normally have some ready along with all the other traditional Filipino sweets. The sticky rice is amazing! The sticky rice balls are in a league of their own. The traditional puto is always a delight, and the empanada... oh the empanadas is a dance in my mouth.. Shame on me! I have only been to Fil Bake Shop twice in my lifetime. I'm a fan of Filipino baked goods, and this bakery in Delano is the closest one to my home. Unfortunately, I do not get too many opportunities to stop by. Do not let the outdated look of the parking lot and building deter you from shopping at Fil Bake Shop. Don't let the line of people stop you either. The folks working here are wonderful. They let my wife and I sample some of their goodies the first time we dropped by. Of the treats we purchased, these were my favorites. The malasadas, pan de sal, and the lady fingers were all yummy especially since they were all hot and fresh!! Even the next couple of days, they tasted good after warming them up in the microwave. Haven't been by here in years. Yes it's a home town favorite but so much has changed if you don't visit often. The lady fingers are half the size they used to be. Ube pan didn't taste like anything. Growing up in a very small town just north of Delano I did not have much to chose from for certain things. If I wanted Taco Bell or McDonalds, I had to come to Delano. That is the same case for Fil Bake Shop. We had bakeries where I lived however it was mexican pastries and regular donuts. Fil Bake Shop is rather unique to all who live in the Delano area, matter of fact it is quite legendary. When you first arrive here do not let the looks fool you, it is in an older shop that could use a little remodel. But is that what you are doing here? No definitely not, it is their wonderfully delicious baked goods. One of their staples is Pandesol,a Filipino bread and I can remember eating these as a kid. Of course at the time I didn't realize how good they are just alone cause I would make little sandwiches with them. Or I'd eat them with eggs and sausage like I would biscuits. Another item I love probably even more than the pandesol are the Lady Fingers. Baked bread with cream cheese down the middle and sugar lightly sprinkled on it. Freaking amazing when fresh or warmed up at home. Hell, they're amazing even room temperature. Fil Bake Shop has such a variety of different baked goods, it will excite you and overwhelm you trying to choose what to buy. The variety is not huge like a Porto's but your stomach will drive you nuts with the fresh smell and goods on display. The shop is ran by a family, alot of aunties and uncles and they are super friendly. Everything is well priced, you can walk in with $5 and walk out with a few days worth of bites. They recently started selling Ube Flan Cupcakes, similar to Cafe86 in Pasadena. Now I haven't tried the ones from Cafe86 but I have tried the ones from Fil Bake Shop. Now this is where the stars drop from 5 to 4 in my review. Aesthetically they are quite beautiful but a little small for the price. Just the other day I drove up north to Delano on a whim to grab some goodies and decided to try these cupcakes out. I bought a total of 6 which was $15, do the math, $2.50 a cupcake. I have tried Ube cupcakes before and I've tried Leche Flan as my wife's family makes it here and there but I've never tried them together. In my opinion the cupcake was dry and crumbled and the Leche Flan wasn't the normal sweetness I am accustomed with. I'm not saying it is bad but it was underwhelming for me and I very rarely anticipate a dessert. Maybe I got a couple of bad cupcakes and they are usually stellar. I will give them another go but my suggestion would be to give a little more Leche Flan, balance out that ratio. I have nothing but great things to say about Fil Bake Shop, a childhood favorite and still willing to drive to buy it. We try to drop in whenever in Delano and have been coming by for years. I had never thought of reviewing this bakery. My secret lol. Great place for fresh Filipino bread and other treats. Ladies usually will give you sample without even asking. We often buy the following: Putos- look like mini muffins. Lady fingers- some are filled with cream filling. Soft like bread, not a dry cookie. Pan de coco- little buns with sweetened coconut inside Mini buns split and filled with ham or tuna salad (think slider size) Lumpia- veggie egg roll Turon-banana wrapped and fried Esmayada- reminds me of lady finger but in a round form This is only a small amount of what they offer. Nothing brings back childhood like warm pan de sal with peanut butter (or spam!) and coffee. My dad bought a dozen or so of this daily when I was a kid. I can taste them now and it makes me want to drive 135 miles up the 5 and the 99 to get my hands on a few more. This is the quintessential filipino pan de sal and if you've never been here to try it, you, my friend are missing out. My little brother likes to eat pandesal every weekend with his breakfast. I remember going here to get pandesal since I was very little. They provide fast service so if there is a line, it goes by quickly. They always give my little brother a free sample of a cinnamon and sugar bread. He likes it! You could order as low as a dollar's worth of pandesal. The bread is made fresh daily. The downside is the parking lot.
