The Filling Station Tap Room is like some brew gateway before you hit the main hubs like Blue Star or The Friendly Spot. Though small, it has lots of charm. Inside it fits the brew keep and no more than 6 people at any given time. There is a chalkboard that has the brews on tap, mostly and mainly IPA's. Along the walls are the remnants of tap handles of long gone kegs for example Sierra Nevada, Guadalupe Brewing Co., Firestone etc. The brew keep serves you your selection. Music from a college station radio cast is piping on the stereo. It's small and on a winter night after work, extremely cozy. But above all and I would be re missed if I did not overstate this, the brews are beyond El Cheapo! Some or most of these brews go for 7 bucks just down the road.. Here the beers typically range from 2 bucks to 6. That is so cool, especially in the bourgie King William District where you are charged just for looking at anything. I do like this place but I do have a few issues with it. 1.) I don't get the whole plastic cup thing. I know you are getting a brew at a substantial discount but some of these brews are noble and sit and drink better in glass. Bud is meant for a plastic cup but not a Brooklyn Chocolate Stout! It deserves a better place than in some arbitrary Dixie cup to showcase it's masterpiece of flavor! 2). I noticed on their Facebook that they seldom update their brew selections. They should do this weekly. The Growler and The Friendly Spot do this regularly. Just one quick pic of their brew selections on the chalkboard, put it on their page and then vamonos. I know they have a twitter account now, which is helpful. They typically get a crowd, from the looks of it bike riders that probably goes there on a daily basis. And buys on a whim. But what about your untypical patron? You have a great selection of brews why not showcase them? 3.) The third issue, and I believe the most important is what really sets the brewpubs from places that just tap brew for you. The server served us our beer and did not say anything instead choosing to play with his phone. Places like The Busted Sandal and The Ten Eleven are hosts by proxy, and will talk your ear out about their brews or in most cases beer in general. I like that and as a rule of thumb most brew lovers appreciate that touch. A simple, "how's it going", "if you need anything let me know" or "what brings you here today" goes a long way. We don't have to be best friends. Just fake it. But acknowledge we are there and be on with your business. Given these things I like this place. The brews are cheap. I like the intimate vibe, cozy space. And I definitely will be coming back. If you want an alternative to The Friendly Spot, whose brews can be pricey or just want to go to a place to chill check this place out. I admit that I was confused and thought the nearby restaurant was open for dinner, but we had walked here from our Airbnb and went with it. It's actually a really fun concept. The beer selection was great. We sat at the metal table section and just enjoyed the evening, there is a picnic table area also that was very cute. My son was happy as can be with a slice of cheese pizza. My husband and I ordered hot dogs, which were actually pretty good. We liked the sauce options. Another couple rolled up on bikes with a toddler. So if you feel weird about dragging your kid along, don't! The guy running the place was friendly and quickly served us. I imagine if you wanted to talk his face off about beers, he would welcome that. I just really enjoy a chill place with good beers! read more

Very rude and uninviting. We told him he was rude for not even telling us he would be with us in a bit. Got there late around 9:30pm on the night I flew into town. Wanted to check out a local watering spot for a drink and this place seemed like the perfect fit. A stones throw away from the BnB I was staying at it was a bit tight inside of what seemed to be a former gas station. There is seating outside but was cold about 45 degrees so opted for the cramped interior. Had a really good selection craft beers where I enjoyed a Belgian Triple. The place closed down around 10pm on this early off peak weekday so had to walk a few doors down to find an open kitchen for late dinner. read more

My husband and I have been wanting to try this place for awhile now but they are only open Monday - Friday. We finally made it there on our Friday night date night after hearing they had tapped a keg of Real Ale Sisyphus that had been sitting over a year. Um, Yes please!!! We were delighted to find it was true and received our pour. The place is very tiny but there is outdoor seating. It was pretty packed when we got there and most outdoor seating was taken. We stood off to the side and within a minute two guys waived us over and said we could sit with them -- cool people, yes! We enjoyed our beers and made some new friends. We heard the restaurant side is outstanding and makes some pretty good grub. You can take the food over to the bar side and we saw some sandwiches/pizza that did look appetizing. However, it was all about our Sisyphus on this night. Thank you Filling Station for surprising us with one of our favorite beers out of no where! That is some good beer management there! We would be back more if they were open on weekends but we will get what we can take. We definitely return. read more

I'm not in love with the pizza, but there's so many options that it's a minor roadblock. One of the more distinct beer bars I've visited in my day, built in a converted gas station that probably had its heyday in the 50s. The space is rather cramped, with maybe 5 seats inside pressed against the bar and a small opening for the standing crowd. It's intimate and I could tell that most people were familiar with one another. The server was polite and friendly and didn't have a problem with allowing me to sample a few beers. As is usually the case, I was on a stakeout for some local/Texas beer and only found a few on tap when I visited, although the tap graveyard they keep reflects that plenty of Texas craft makes its way to this establishment. The rest of the lineup was craft beer from around the country, which is normally cool, but for a New Mexican, seeing Dale's Pale Ale and Deschutes Black Butte is pretty common, so this was a slight disappointment. It's not you, Filling Station, it's me. I need new; I need variety. Ahh, variety, that reminds me. This place definitely has a thing for hoppy beers. There were a great number of IPAs and Pale Ales on tap, which again is cool by me, but kind of works against the whole new and variety necessities I just mentioned. Again, it's not you guys, it's me. The one thing I can say is you is the whole plastic cups thing. I'm not a fan. I noticed it's a small space and there's probably no room to wash glasses and such, but I really dislike drinking beer out of plastic cups. This place is amazing! Such a fine selection of beers! I was completely blown away by the number of wild IPAs that they had! So many that I've never even heard of. Absolutely incredible. There's a small bar inside where you can chill in the A/C. The interior has some funky retro Lone Star stuff that really makes the place look quite old. It used to be an actual gas station in Southtown, and it shows still! There's a great patio area with plenty of bike parking, and picnic tables in the shade to chill out, watch the traffic go by, and relax with a cold one. The pizzas are outta sight! Had one that was big and garlicly, and went really well with the hoppy IPAs! The service was great- they answered all my questions about their beer selection, and told me a few new things that I didn't know about their IPAs! You can tell that these guys have a passion for great beer. The prices were quite reasonable for the delicious pizza and the incredible beers. read more

What's not to like. The owner has preserved a piece of history by converting an old Texaco Filling Station into draft brew house. The barkeep let me taste everything I was interested in. They have 4 or 5 seats inside, a covered patio area with tables, and a couple of tables in the old horseshoe driveway. There's not much to say except this is a fantastic neighborhood concept blending and keeping history in the local community while invigorating the economy. And a bigger plus... if you live nearby, you can walk or stagger instead of risking a DUI or causing injury to a pedestrian. Also while there is technically no good at the Filling Station, the owner owns the Station Cafe next door. Cons, you can't leave an open tab at the Filling Station and use the same credit card next door for food. Pros, you can bring your beer from the Filling Station into the Station Cafe. This is cool little spot with great prices on beer. I went there on a recent Tuesday evening with my wife and we were lucky to snag a seat at the tiny (4 seat?) bar. While the prices were great, the selection was not as good as I had hoped. What I mean is that if you love IPAs and PAs you will be in heaven. However, I'm into Belgian Style Dubbels and Tripels and didn't find much here that suited my taste (although I did enjoy the Sisyphus!). The bartender was polite and seemed knowledgeable but wasn't particularly friendly. Here's a great question: what the heck is up with the wacky hours? Open only 3:00pm--11:00pm Monday thru Friday. Really?? What bar closes at 11:00pm and isn't open on the weekends? All in all, I liked this place and will return if I'm downtown but not finding much here that I can't find closer to home (albeit at a higher price). The Filing station is great buut when combined with the little restaurant owned by the same place next door it's awesome! Very low key hipsterish, lots of bicyclist and soccer fans (outside TV) . This place has a tiny little indoor bar with a lot of great beer. They have an extensive outdoor seating area between the bar building and their sister restaurant which has some super affordable, super delicious food. The pizza is good, the sandwiches are grand. I have never had a bad sandwich but I have regretted when I didn't get something with aoli knowing that I could have enjoyed that deliciousness. Dog friendly. Big bonus for me is that they always have my favorite local (if Blanco counts as local) beer, Devil's Backbone, I don't think there should be a bar in SA that doesn't carry this delicious, reasonably priced gem. read more

Love this little spot. Awesome beer selection, great food from the station cafe out back, and overall a really really cool concept. I'm so thankful to have this place within walking distance of my apartment.. Easy place to swing through for a cold one or 2... Or 5. The two bartenders I've had so far are pretty friendly, but you have to tease the conversation out of them. Overall cool guys who seem to know what they're talking about in terms of the beer. Another plus is that they play sports games on their tv outside. Two suggestions: extend your hours. Both for the bar and for the food. I think the demand is there to support it. Next suggestion, maybe consider increasing the size of the TV. The small one tucked up in the window is charming, but I feel a larger tv with better sound could attract a bigger crowd. Absolutely. Also sweet about this place is that the station cafe right next door will bring food over to you if you want to sit on the little patio area right outside the bar itself. I had one unpleasant bartender which was kind of off-putting a while back, but other than that, the service has always been really inviting and friendly. The filling station is easily a new hangout for me - here's why: 1. The CAFE is so good! Not only can one find a slice of pizza (a miracle in SATX), but they have so many good sandwiches. I had the Club (Turkey, Ham, Mozzarella, and Cheddar w/LTM on a roll). It was so good. I've heard the pulled pork and the cajun chicken are good. I met the sauce-man here, and he said the spice is mild and delicious. 2. BEER: I really don't like IPA's, and this place is an IPA palace. So if you like those, go to town. There were a few blonds, a hefeweisen, a stout... There are about 20 beers on tap served between $4 and $7 per cup (beer is served in plastic cups. 3. Location and Space are essential. The parking situation is okay, as there is an abandoned looking parking lot caddy-corner to the bar. The cafe has many (5-15) tables for seating, and the taproom itself has picnic tables, bar stools, and small cafe tables. The Filling Station is a great spot. When we stumbled across this little place, I wasn't expecting much. It was next to a restaurant some friends and I were trying while we were in San Antonio. Once I went inside, I was blown away. They have an EXCELLENT selection of beers and bartenders that know their stuff. Everyone in my party go recommendations, and none of us were let down. It was great.
