This place use to be a gas station it was converted to a convenience store. Great prices to get something quick compare to Southtown pricing. My friend ordered a pizza he liked it, but it was frozen pizza that was put it in a toaster. Interesting concept.

some taps are for show. they have about 10 beers on the draft I think

I love IPA's and that is what they serve. If they only served it in a real glass, they'd have my 5 1/2 stars. Oh well, they'll just have to get 5. I like how they note the alcohol content and IBU of each beer.

The power of the brew to warm the coldest night.

The Filling Station Tap Room is like some brew gateway before you hit the main hubs like Blue Star or The Friendly Spot. Though small, it has lots of charm. Inside it fits the brew keep and no more than 6 people at any given time. There is a chalkboard that has the brews on tap, mostly and mainly IPA's. Along the walls are the remnants of tap handles of long gone kegs for example Sierra Nevada, Guadalupe Brewing Co., Firestone etc. The brew keep serves you your selection. Music from a college station radio cast is piping on the stereo. It's small and on a winter night after work, extremely cozy. But above all and I would be re missed if I did not overstate this, the brews are beyond El Cheapo! Some or most of these brews go for 7 bucks just down the road.. Here the beers typically range from 2 bucks to 6. That is so cool, especially in the bourgie King William District where you are charged just for looking at anything. I do like this place but I do have a few issues with it. 1.) I don't get the whole plastic cup thing. I know you are getting a brew at a substantial discount but some of these brews are noble and sit and drink better in glass. Bud is meant for a plastic cup but not a Brooklyn Chocolate Stout! It deserves a better place than in some arbitrary Dixie cup to showcase it's masterpiece of flavor! 2). I noticed on their Facebook that they seldom update their brew selections. They should do this weekly. The Growler and The Friendly Spot do this regularly. Just one quick pic of their brew selections on the chalkboard, put it on their page and then vamonos. I know they have a twitter account now, which is helpful. They typically get a crowd, from the looks of it bike riders that probably goes there on a daily basis. And buys on a whim. But what about your untypical patron? You have a great selection of brews why not showcase them? 3.) The third issue, and I believe the most important is what really sets the brewpubs from places that just tap brew for you. The server served us our beer and did not say anything instead choosing to play with his phone. Places like The Busted Sandal and The Ten Eleven are hosts by proxy, and will talk your ear out about their brews or in most cases beer in general. I like that and as a rule of thumb most brew lovers appreciate that touch. A simple, "how's it going", "if you need anything let me know" or "what brings you here today" goes a long way. We don't have to be best friends. Just fake it. But acknowledge we are there and be on with your business. Given these things I like this place. The brews are cheap. I like the intimate vibe, cozy space. And I definitely will be coming back. If you want an alternative to The Friendly Spot, whose brews can be pricey or just want to go to a place to chill check this place out. On cold winter nights they have wood burning outside at no extra charge...

A laid-back, beer loving and serving joint-- plenty on tap. The gas station-turned tap room has seating outside and is a true ode to old San Antonio. Good priced pints, and a decent pour to boot. If you love hoppy beer, GO HERE.

A tiny little hipster place in SA TX! This place is tiny, and they had a few seats inside, with a few outside as well. The bartender was super friendly and welcoming. He explained what they had - mostly local or Texas-based beer, but other basics as well. AND, they did have cider. Outside, it was a quiet area to sit and enjoy our beer and company.

One of the more distinct beer bars I've visited in my day, built in a converted gas station that probably had its heyday in the 50s. The space is rather cramped, with maybe 5 seats inside pressed against the bar and a small opening for the standing crowd. It's intimate and I could tell that most people were familiar with one another. The server was polite and friendly and didn't have a problem with allowing me to sample a few beers. As is usually the case, I was on a stakeout for some local/Texas beer and only found a few on tap when I visited, although the tap graveyard they keep reflects that plenty of Texas craft makes its way to this establishment. The rest of the lineup was craft beer from around the country, which is normally cool, but for a New Mexican, seeing Dale's Pale Ale and Deschutes Black Butte is pretty common, so this was a slight disappointment. It's not you, Filling Station, it's me. I need new; I need variety. Ahh, variety, that reminds me. This place definitely has a thing for hoppy beers. There were a great number of IPAs and Pale Ales on tap, which again is cool by me, but kind of works against the whole new and variety necessities I just mentioned. Again, it's not you guys, it's me. The one thing I can say is you is the whole plastic cups thing. I'm not a fan. I noticed it's a small space and there's probably no room to wash glasses and such, but I really dislike drinking beer out of plastic cups. Anyhow, overall a good place to grab a beer or two, so let me emphasize that.

    Taps at filling station.

Beer, wine and pizza...what's not to love about The Growler Exchange?…read more For those of you who have never been to this amazing business before, The Growler Exchange is a tap room and restaurant which carries a huge variety of unique beers, as well as some of the most delicious pizza you've ever had in your life. I've been a regular at this restaurant for 5 years and I can tell you that quality has stayed the same throughout the years. I also appreciate that they now have a bigger variety of wines and you can also buy beer and wine to-go. If you are looking to try their amazing pizza, their most popular pie (and my husband's favorite) is their Mike's Special which is a red sauce pizza with mozzarella, pepperoni, bacon and topped with honey drizzle. However, if you prefer something spicy (like I do), I highly recommend their Spicy Meat Sweats which is also a red sauce pizza with mozzarella, garlic sausage, pepperoni, salami, bacon and topped with some very spicy chili oil. Hope everyone gets to try this amazing local business, and don't forget to bring your growler with you! PSA for the parents: They do welcome kids, and they even have a changing station in the women's bathroom.

Upon entering, we were worried that we'd meet the same fate as before as all the tables were filled and there was about 20-25 people in front of us. Fortunately we noticed a couple empty chairs at the bar and the bartender mentioned they were open. Counting our blessings we took em and started looking at the menus. As I'm browsing the menu, the girlfriend and I are intrigued by our surroundings as we saw plenty of tvs showing sports and a lot of music memorabilia on the walls. Made me think this is the kind of bar scene I would like to host at home if I had the space and $$$. But that's why we dine out at places like this. Back to the menu, I noticed a ton of beer taps so after browsing the menu, I decided on the hazy beer hug by Goose Island while the girlfriend ordered a spicy watermelon margarita. As an east coaster, I enjoy anything by Goose Island as they serve several types of beer where I used to live back in Northern VA. So I was happy sipping on it. The girlfriend enjoyed the margarita as it had the right amount of spice. She also mentioned she could hardly taste the booze in it; while this might be a complaint with some patrons, she prefers her cocktail this way. As for food, I decided on the Ultimate Burger with a side of broccoli and she ordered the Crispy Chicken sandwich with fries. The burger is fine; pretty tasty even. But the broccoli, definitely raw with only a brush of butter. It's obvious they did not microwave it in the bag long enough. We ordered a second side of broccoli; and same thing; raw with a slight butter glaze. They also gave me some fries with my burger; I'm not complaining about free fries but kind of odd they were thrown on the plate. Pretty rookie move there. Meanwhile, the crispy chicken sandwich was basic; good texture but not much flavor; could use more spices and flavors in the batter. Both dishes are pretty big so we were stuffed afterwards. I'd be open to returning to try other items or maybe if I'm in the mood for that burger. But definitely getting a different side with it.

You walk up and either walk through the courtyard style Biergarten with tables or you can go inside. It was an unseasonably nice day, so, we opted to sit outside There is a QR code to view the menus. There are entrees and plenty of apps/sharables. There is also a very extensive beer menu. Make no mistake, this is their bread and butter. They boast an imprecise "99 beers on tap." There's local brews, light and dark beers, hoppy, Belgium style, German style, wheat, etc etc etc. if that's not your speed there are cocktails and non-alcoholic options. Our server was fantastic. Drinks were AMAZING! Bartender Rob made the best Negroni I've ever had. I asked him to use whatever gin he thought best--result was an artistic smooooooth full-bodied drink. Told him when I was done I'd lick the glass if it wasn't considered so uncouth for a 'mature' lady like myself to do so Hubby's Buffalo Trace bourbon old fashioned was also outstanding. Rob was the bartender last night who did such a great job, and his work was even better tonight. We highly recommend The EsquireTavern for excellent cocktails. We love the long wood bar and high copper ceiling upstairs, but love the intimate speakeasy atmosphere downstairs even more. We'll definitely be back every time we're in San Antonio! First review, Friday night: Drinks were great (Manhattan and Bourbon Old Fashioned). REAL drinks, no complaints at all about those. And the bartenders were very friendly and helpful. Those aspects of the Esquire get 5+ stars from us. But the appetizers were not good, close to inedible. It was about 8:30pm or so, so maybe they were getting ready to close out the kitchen but the chalupitas with chicken tasted like rubber, and no flavor at all. The seafood platter had something in it that was breading with shell inside, but no meat of any kind. We couldn't figure out what it was supposed to be. The shrimp was good and the fish was good but those other things... We'll always love the drinks, the long wooden bar, and the ambiance at the Esquire Tavern, but we'll eat somewhere else and come here for before or after dinner drinks. (See update above to this review for when we returned the next night for after dinner drinks.)
