We ordered a spread with steak, rigatoni, gnocchi, Brussels sprouts, and spicy prawns, and every single dish delivered. The flavors were spot on across the board. What really stood out (beyond the food) was the service--attentive, friendly, and dialed in the entire night without ever feeling overbearing. We came here for the first time with a reservation and still had to wait about 15-20 minutes. That would have been fine if someone had acknowledged us, but we were left standing in the middle of the restaurant while multiple staff members walked by, made eye contact, and said nothing. What made it worse was watching a guest who arrived after us get helped before we were. That set the tone right away and felt off. The restaurant is small, so this wasn't a case of a busy, chaotic space. There were open tables and plenty of staff moving around, which made the lack of attention even more frustrating. Food was mediocre at best. Several items we wanted were already unavailable, which limited options. The cocktails were disappointing and not worth ordering. The space itself is nice and has a quaint feel, but service and execution matter more. Between being ignored at arrival, the disorganized seating, and average food, this was not a good experience. I had high hopes for the evening, unfortunately it fell short. We started with the fried goat cheese which was a very small portion, then had a salad, pasta and lamb with fries. For the lamb dish being 40++ I would hope for something more than two very small chops, and fries burnt to an inch of their life. I found the fries not appealing, and inedible. My partner thought the pasta was fine, but again nothing sensational for the price point. Restaurant itself is nice, service was fine, but the food at that price point was a miss. This is crazy for a dish with no meat. The waitress recommended the steak and fries. Honestly, the fries tasted better then the steak which should have been the star of the plate. Disappointed. The lamb chops were actually very tasty. You only get 3 and that's it. It was quite expensive for how much food you get. I like the food, but prices are fine dining and this certainly is not. This used to be one of our favorite places. But we don't come often anymore because the prices are up and it's a fairly limited menu. So we went here last night and we just really were not impressed. It was $195 for three people and included one glass of wine and one beer. The scallop dish had two scallops and four not even large prawns in a sauce that's it. So for three dollars more I ordered pasta, which was also pretty skimpy so $45 for that dish no thank you it's just not that good anymore. read more

Found another Italian place to add to our repitoir! After passing this restaurant numerous times, we decided to have an early holiday celebratory dinner there and it was a good choice! Located in an old house on the corner of NW 24th Place and Vaugh, this has been home to several restaurants over the past 20 years. Fillmore Tratttook over about 7 years ago and I have no idea how or why I haven't eaten there sooner! Inside is small with a main dining area plus about 7 seats at the bar. There is a smaller attached side area for dining also, but it felt removed from the restaurant. Since the tables for two we're almost connected, we chose the bar which enabled front row viewing into the kitchen area plus friendly conversation with Spencer and other bartenders. We enjoyed our meal, some things more than others. When Spencer mentioned a stuffed artichoke special, we immediately ordered it for a shared appetizer. I make them for the holidays and having someone else do the work was appealing. Unfortunately the artichoke itself should have been steamed prior to being stuffed as the leaves were not tender and since they put it under the broiler, it was too crisp. The Autumn Salad of radicchio, pistachios & pomegranate seeds with a few slices of cured ham, was as much a holiday salad as an Autumn one! It was a delicious combination and enough to share. I'll definitely be making versions of this at home. For our mains, the eggplant parmigiana was outstanding! Breaded, fried and topped with tomato sauce and mozzarella, this is a comforting dish! The Bambolotti Sugo di Carne was good but not great as I was expecting. Rigatoni in a red sauce with a dollop of marscapone that Once stirred into the dish, it left no discernible flavor because the sauce was too overpowering. Don't get me wrong, it was good, but nothing I couldn't easily have at home. We shared the zabaglione freddo for desert since it was a unique item. I make zabaglione and typically add as a layer to tiramisu or serve with fresh berries. Their version had crumbled cookies and I found the crunch texture distracting. It was super sweet and between the two of us, we ate less than half. Service was fantastic, very warm and inviting. And we loved the Barbera we shared, a full bodied jammy red that worked perfectly with our entire meal. We will definitely be coming back to try more! read more

A great meal with great friends! I wish I had taken more photos of this delicious meal. Met some friends on a Thursday night for dinner. Make sure you make a reservation when you go! They are a smaller indoor seating restaurant. The staff was very hospitable and attentive. We ordered the: We had a bottle of delicious Red Wine (Yetti I believe was the brand) Appetizers: * Fried Goat Cheese - which came over caramelized onions // very delicious! * Calamari - good size portion and favorable. Would have loved a different dipping sauce. I think it may have been straight mayonnaise Entrees: * Garlic Gnocchi - YUM! Fresh full garlic, cooked perfectly * Bambolotti Sugo di Carne - perfectly cooked pasta and sauce. The addition of Italian Sausage and Filet was brilliant. Great flavor profiles. How did I know about this place? The ambience in this smaller dining room is cozy and bright. The patio seating look inviting too. Our server was friendly and truly concerned that we liked all of our choices we made. I had glass of white wine, which I did not care for and she immediately replaced it with a different one without me even asking. She was great. I saw that they had croquettes on the menu and of course this Basque girl had to try them and they were amazing. The had just the right crunch and tend inside. Upon my husbands request the add prawns to the linguine. The prawns had great flavor and my guess is they were wild caught. The chef stopped by the table and brought extra fresh grated Parmesan cheese just because. He made sure we were enjoying meals and our experience. I'm shocked that this establishment has gotten such good reviews.. I think it's pretty poor overall. In particular, the food. For an Italian place.. this restaurant was extremely disappointing. The pasta sauce tasted like it may have contained prego, as it didn't taste homemade. I literally saw the cooks pouring in boxes of De Cecco.. and saw tons more boxes of that pasta on the shelf in the kitchen. To top off my poor experience.. the pasta was undercooked and gummy. If you're looking for good pasta and a good Italian restaurant, I would suggest you go elsewhere. Overall, I was very disappointed in my expensive meal compared to quality of food I got for my money. This place is just down from where we were staying. I asked the hotel staff about it and no one had been there but they had heard it was great so I went on Open Table (recommended) to reserve a table. The place is small and has some outdoor seating (not employed on this January day) so the Open Table reservation was a great idea. We were met with a gentleman outside (who I later learned was the owner) and he led us in to meet with the hostess. This is a family-run business and they have a small set up but everything is oh-so-good. I of course come into an Italian place with a tomato allergy which they managed with no issue. We brought our own bottle of wine which I believe had a $25 corkage fee. Not too bad and they complimented the wine as it was one they had on their menu as well. We had a 5ish reservation so we were a bit early for dinner but I kind of like that before it gets crowded (still managing my crowd exposure). They will even seat you at the counter if you want to watch the action in the kitchen, I may try this next time. Also, the counter is first come first served so that may be an option for you if you don't have a reservation. Jack Kreitzman is the owner who we met in the beginning; I told him our hosts said they heard that the place was good but didn't know for sure. He got the information about our accommodations and said he would send a coupon over for the staff to try so they would have some familiarity with his restaurant. I thought that sounded great. A great way to build community. Another thing I noticed on the menu was a dining club for a fee you can become a member of their dining club (I would probably do this if I lived nearer) it starts at $75 for a single or $150 per couple and you get priority seating they have a bingo night and many other perks. He said they started this before the pandemic but it helped out during the early days of the pandemic too. They were doing exclusively takeout at that time. We stopped by on a drizzly Saturday night and they were able to seat us despite not having a reservation. We had the Autumn salad, the halibut fra diavolo, and the daily pasta special which was a gnocchi with lamb ragu. The salad was a nice palette cleanser which set up for really getting to taste the sweetness (with just a bit of heat) of the diavolo sauce and the hearty ragu. An excellent Italian restaurant in Slubtown of Portland Oregon. I have bee coming here for sometime. The food here is excellent their menu includes many dishes of pasta, meat and fish. Menus items on the many have good variety unlike many other Italian restaurants in Portland. Their service is really good, this is the only restaurant in Portland that I don't have to pour wine myself. (I find very odd that I have to pour wine to my glass myself when a bottle of wine is ordered. So far other establishments do not even try to pour their customers' glass.) My pet peeve here. Anyway I don't have to pour myself. The appetizer is always good, I had a gnocchi, was so good, my husband has a lamb, desert was yummy. I will be returning here for many more times. read more

Another discovery this month, I have been curious about this place but never made it to the door. Great casual Italian with decent selection of wines and appetizers. Either way works for having a big group for special occasion or just a couple of ppl at the bar counter. Nice and cozy place, Welcoming and friendly staffs, if the weather is a bit warmer, could sit outside by the fireplace. Bite size Filet minion was good to share, hope they serve with baked potato or mash instead of chips. Meat and cheese platter was a good portion, easily shared for 2-3 ppl, added some breads (doesn't come with the plate), crostini was nice and crispy, and arugula salad went well with these meat dishes. Reservation recommended but you can just come to the bar and have a glass and appetizers while you are waiting table or can stay there. read more

This is an ok restaurant (noisy when even half full - sounds bounces off the many hard surfaces) with excellent service and congenial staff. The menu is average, nothing more or less than many US Italian restaurants. We ordered a pasta to share as a first course. I expected it would be plated in the kitchen for each of us but no, just one bowl and a spoon. We plated it ourselves. No bread or olive oil. Our entrees (chicken parm and eggplant parm) were tasty. Portions are large. So uninspired though. Wouldn't recommend this restaurant despite the fine service. Food counts too! read more

Food looked great online and at all the tables around us, but we were greeted by a very annoyed hostess who sat us down and left us, service-less for WELL over 20 minutes. No one stopped by to offer us drinks, no one even stopped and said hi. The table next to us did get fully served all in the time we sat there, being ignored. When we finally got up and left from sheer hunger and frustration, a sassy "okay bye guys" followed by a waitress. The only acknowledgment of the night! We were walking our dog and decided that we were hungry, and happened to walk by the Fillmore shortly after they opened. They had a cute little dog-friendly patio, so we stopped. I'm only sad that it was our first time here. The food and wine were really good, and the fun conversation with the staff made it all the more pleasant. And they were soooo good to our dog. She is going to want to go there all the time! It was an enjoyable meal in every sense. We had the calamari and an asparagus special to start. Our experience wasn't in line with the reviews unfortunately. We had steak/lamb - over $40 - which was served ala carte on a chopped lettuce medley so there was hope that the protein's would blow up our mouth with flavor. But there was no explosion. The salad we had prior to that was made with overly coarse-cut broccoli/carrots/cucumbers and came with the same lettuce mix that came under our ala carte meat. The starter-calamari was well prepared, but the portion was skimpy and plated over more of that salad mix we came to know so well by the end of our meal. Honestly, I wish this review could be softer, but with all the amazing eateries in Portland, I felt robbed spending several hundred dollars on dinner here. read more

Spencer and Emma have made my husband and I (and all the friends and family we have brought in over the years) feel like family. We have celebrated our engagement, Valentines Day, anniversary and any week night we don't feel like cooking at the Trattoria.
