We wandered in for lunch while exploring Kensington Market. The place is comfortable and welcoming with a funky boho feel. Our server was sweet, prompt and knowledgeable, answering our questions for info and giving her opinion when asked. We ordered fried shrimp and gyoza for appetizers. I ordered chilaquiles for my entree and my friend ordered teriyaki chicken. Our food was served in a timely manner, hot and fresh. We said @we ordered way too much'l but we ate almost every bite it was so good. The breaded shrimp was so crisp and flavorful. Gyoza was savory and perfectly cooked. I loved my entree and my friend said it was the best teriyaki she had ever had. Our server gave us advice about things to see in the area beyond the market. My friend and I were searching for live music on a Friday night and decided to head over to Kensington. We immediately heard singing from Film Cafe and decided to stop in. Their in-house singer, Seu, performed a mix of acoustic pop covers, latin songs, and reggae. The restaurant offers entertainment or events every single night of the week, including movie nights, karaoke, trivia night, and comedy. From the café, I ordered the Tipsy Spicy Chai (chai tea, spices, Fireball, Rum, ginger, simple syrup, and cinnamon). The cocktail was warm and tasted like fall - delicious. I also had the takoyaki from their Japanese menu which was a bit pricey ($13 for 6 pieces), but tasted good nonetheless. We came again on a Tuesday and stopped in for their Taco Tuesday promo (2 for $10). I had the carnitas and fish taco which were both quite big and filling. This is a cute corner cafe in Kensington Market, with an outside curbside window for those wanting a smoothie or drink to go...or...a nice roomy dining room for those wanting to eat in. I was really surprised that the sandwich came in regular white toast instead of a Cuban or French type bread. That really let me down. My cousin and I visited this cafe and fell in love with their drinks! This place is cozy with friendly staff and offers a diverse menu. Although, we only tried the drinks and a bagel, I will definitely go back one day to try the tacos and other dishes. Their pastries looked very fresh too! The food menu here is deceivingly small but the drinks menu is quite extensive. 3-7pm is happy hour and you can get $8.50 drinks! They have all day breakfast which is interesting, as well as sandwiches and bagels, but also a small latin/spanish menu and a small japanese inspired menu. It's an interesting concept but the execution didn't wow me. We got the takoyaki, veggie gyoza, and chicken tacos for food, and the marshmallow hot chocolate, strawberry brownie shake, and the berry smoothie for drinks. The strawberry brownie shake was quite sweet but didn't feel artificial, and you could tell there was actual fruit in it which was nice! It felt more like a chocolate strawberry smoothie than a shake. I enjoyed it. My friends liked their drinks as well. The takoyaki was very creamy inside with a few small bits of octopus. The gyoza tasted not homemade and was probably frozen but the sauce had a good kick. Food overall felt very average but it's probably best for drinks anyway since it's a cafe. Although they do have lots of cocktail options! Service was quick and efficient and seating inside is pretty ample. It's a very casual spot, probably not a good place for a sit down dinner. More of a quick bite/snacks and drinks type place. There were people on their laptops even around 6:30pm, so it'd probably also be a good place to work remotely while sipping on one of their many interesting lattes. read more

They support young musicians which is amazing. Their menu has Japanese fusion option and also vegetarian/vegan options. Also good variety of cocktails, hot cocktails, milkshakes and smoothies. They also offer cakes and cookies, which you need to ask staff about them cause they're not listed on the menu. Came here on a cold and dreary tuesday a week ago to have a coffee and with a colleague. Its a place I've always walked by in Kensington Market and never gone into. Lots of interesting coffee and hot drink items and I was happy to see that the place was licensed so I could get a Irish coffee. Fine quick service and nice ambiance. Really nice atmosphere, the mango lemonade is really good as is their pastries. If you are looking for a place to study i would recommend giving it a try however there are a couple things to note first. 1. They have certain laptop hours so be mindful of when you go and what work you're doing 2. They have wifi but i wasn't able to connect to it, im not sure if other people have experienced this and it may have just had trouble connecting to my computer. 3. In the evening it shifts into more of a restaurant than cafe so take note of that if you're planning on coming later in the day. read more

I'm Japanese and this is a *very* interesting cafe and restaurant! The coconut butter coffee (which I asked to be less sweet) was *amazing*, reminiscent of what the Japanese would call purin (crème caramel, basically) without being sweet. The curry poutine was also quite innovative - replacing gravy with a creamier form of curry really worked out. The other ingredients (parmesan, bacon, and an egg) made for an odd combo with the curry, but I didn't mind it. It was a warm and calming space, that wasn't too crowded in the evening, and offered WiFi and outlets. The microphone in the middle suggested they hold special events as well? 5 star! I AM IN LOVE with this place. This is less than 10mins walk to where I work so I tend to go there most times for breakfast with my coworkers after a long night 12hr shift. I found the food takes awhile to serve up, but a lot of the dishes look like they'd take awhile to prepare so that probably wouldn't be too surprising. Expect to wait 10-20 minutes after your order is placed when it's busy. Cold drinks average $8, and if you want some fruits/veggies in it can go up to $11. I ordered the hazelnut popcorn frappe. It tasted pretty nice, but size-wise was not that big. Pretty much the kind of regular size you might get at starbucks or something, for double the price. I ordered the karaage don. The chicken was tender and juicy inside, crisp batter on the outside, with a lot of seasoning and sauces on top. As far as karaage goes, I like how they make it. Walk in, obtain menus from the front counter, pick a table to seat, when ready order at the front counter, obtain a number sign, food is served at your table. Food: What I like about this place is they serve purple rice for their donburi (Japanese rice bowl)! I ordered the shrimp tempura curry don and it was alright, the curry was not deep in flavour compared to other curries I had in Toronto. The tempura had a crispy exterior, different from the light battered ones you would get from sushi restaurants. My friend ordered the teriyaki chicken don, it was unexpected to find out the chicken was battered and fried instead of non-fried chicken. Regardless, the teriyaki flavour was a thumbs up! The portions were not small which is a bonus. Service & atmosphere: This cafe has a good amount of seating for individuals, duos and groups of 3-4. This is a nice cafe to do some work too. When using the washroom, after pressing the code, pull the door outward(?) to open (I honestly forgot which way so take this advice lightly). Price: Gratuity is included with your bill. I ordered my food and drink at the counter and was given a number. Upon deciding where to sit, the food took around 10-15 min to arrive and I was delighted by the serving of the meal I had ordered. The Tokyo omelette came with 2 purple rice onigri (rice balls), miso soup, and a small pudding dessert. I ate my meal happily and was stuffed after finishing. I was not in any rush that day to finish my meal and stayed at the cafe relaxing and enjoying the food. Overall, cute place with good food and service. A spacious cafe in Kensington that we decided to try after scoping the menu outside. It's supposed to be a japanese fusion cafe but I personally felt the Japanese portion of the menu wasn't very much. My friend did mention it seemed like that aspect of their menu has gotten smaller over the years. They did not have AC on, so it was a little stuffy when we were dining in. I ordered the Energy breakfast, part of their all day breakfast and my friend ordered the croissant sandwich. I really enjoyed the breakfast, came with 3 pieces of toast, 3 eggs (any style), and sweet potato chunks and salad. It was a good amount of food for $13.50 and was clean, not leaving my stomach feeling super gross. A nice change to common breakfasts at franchises or other establishments downtown. I stopped by to get a hot beverage I ordered the matcha latte with almond milk size medium because they don't have any small and it came up to $6 and change after tax the server did ask me how sweet I want it and I said not sweet which I later regretted because it was a bit bitter but I can tell that it was quality matcha that was used to make the latte I also use their bathroom which is only for customers so once you get a receipt you receive the code to the bathroom inside the bathroom smelt refreshing and it was very clean I would definitely go back again to try their food or maybe they're just hard because everything did look very delicious read more

But now I came back in the afternoon to drink a latte and read and the girl who took my order told me they have a 20 minute time limit for coffee-only customers. I absolutely love this place. I haven't been to it after Covid but before Covid I was going there for breakfast every couple months. They have a great menu after additional breakfast items and really delicious breads. They also do really interesting fusions with Asian food for the breakfasts that are really fun to experiment with. Walking around Kensington, it's easy to spot this location with the bright lights and plenty of store front signs advertising the specials. They also play live music certain nights which you can keep an ear out for. When you enter, you're free to find your own table and seating with a supposed 1 hour limit depending on how busy it is, and you go up to the counter to place your order, and it is then brought to your table. Film Cafe advertises itself as a Japanese cafe, however, I wasn't too certain I got that vibe from the menu and some of the drink selections. Nonetheless, they had a great selection of classic cocktails, coffee and espresso, as well as some warmed alcoholic cocktails. My friend and I went for the apple cider with Jameson and the tipsy chai tea, as well as the Argentinian cookie. Both drinks were quite strong so there was no doubt that there was the 2oz of alcohol in each, but the flavour was balanced. The apple cider is on the slightly less sweet side and is spiced with cinnamon, while the chai tea has a strong ginger flavour. The cookie was unique, kinda like two shortbread cookies with a thick layer of toffee in the middle with nuts. It was a good balance where you're able to get any drink that you're feeling (they also have a menu for smoothies), while also being able to have a conversation and catch up with some good live music in the background! read more

I actually like this system because you can basically leave whenever you feel like, and the service was usually pretty good the times I've been there. The cafe has a rather large selection of food and drink - there are many teas, lattes, and smoothies to choose from. In terms of food, there is also quite a bit to choose from: western breakfasts (eggs, bacon, pancakes), various Japanese meals (donburi, sushi, Karaage, terriyaki, miso soup), bagels, and sandwiches. This is a good place to go with a group for that reason - everyone's bound to find something they like, and the place itself is quite spacious with a lot of great natural light. The place was cozy but bright with a giant fan above the front counter keeping the interior somewhat cool, and we were greeted immediately by a staff who offered us the menus. ++ Sapporo breakfast: is this really what the people of Sapporo would eat for breakfast?? I've no idea, but I'm glad we picked this as our brunch. The scrambled egg was velvety smooth and tender just like we'd expect from at a Japanese eatery, and the sausages were flavourful and were a welcome relief from the well made but ultimately lacking rice balls, which were unflavoured. A small piece of, say, pickled plum would have brought the rice balls to life, IMO. Banana hot chocolate: the banana flavour was on the subtle side which worked, and I enjoyed the froth on top. Let's start with the good: cheesecake dessert wasn't too sweet, very enjoyable. The bad: All our drinks were only lukewarm, if the weather was better than maybe not so bad, but when it was raining outside and freezing, then a hot cup of drink is the best. We didn't ask to remake the drinks as there will be too many to remake, but really, there has to be some kind of quality control. Things should be made right the first time.
