A friend invited us to Finch's Market, and at first we were a bit apprehensive since the place doesn't look very appealing online and the parking was pretty bad. Once we stepped inside, our experience completely changed. The space is actually very cute and welcoming. The coffee was very good, and the food was fantastic. We tried the latte and the pear prosciutto with balsamic -- everything was delicious. Great service as well. Definitely a must-try, and we would absolutely come back. read more

Cool neighbourhood cafe with a charming vintage aesthetic. I liked taking in all the little details like the stepladder and lamps on some of the tables. The barista that helped me was friendly and patient. Lots of variety in the sandwich department, including many vegetarian options and one vegan sandwich, with a few more vegan (and some non-vegan) options to be found in the other areas of the menu like salad and soups. Great selection of loose leaf tea. Slim pickings for pastries when I showed up around 2. I got a brie & olive sandwich, a chocolate chip cookie (the last one), and a darjeeling tea. The sandwich was very simple - just brie, olives, and lots of black pepper - but it was fantastic! The baguette was very soft and tender, and just the right amount of crusty. The creamy brie and briny olives were a delightful pairing. Simple is best sometimes. The cookie was good, also very soft, with a little bit of a buttery flavour. A little cakey, but that's not a bad thing. Nice tea too, a nice pairing with the cookie. I like that the mesh steeper they used covered the top of the mug to keep the tea hot while steeping, and they provided a small plate to remove the tea leaves when it was steeped to my liking. The vibe would have been immaculate, except one of the baristas decided that they needed to play club music, loudly, when it was their turn on the aux. Aggressive bass and airhorns. At first I thought they were just having a laugh playing one song but it kept going. It was weird and made me not want to stick around because it was so incongruous with the neighbourhood coffee shop atmosphere. read more

If I could give half stars, I would give this place 3.5 stars. I had their well known baguette pear sandwich (pear, prosciutto, blue Brie, toasted walnuts, EVOO, balsamic vinegar). I give them props for the pairing of ingredients. However, I was unimpressed with the bread. I had the multi grain baguette and I found the bread poor quality (something you would find at a discounted store such as no frills, Walmart). The bread wasn't stale by any means but I believe this sandwich would taste much better if the baguette had more of crust-like texture. I found the portion of the prosciutto and cheese was generous. The sandwich needed more sauce-I appreciated the drizzle of balsamic vinegar (either more is needed or even a drizzle of honey would have made the sandwich). So if the bread was better and a little bit more sauce, I would give this sandwich a solid 4. In terms of ambiance, this place is located in a quiet neighborhood. It has a cozy, friendly neighborhood vibe. I don't think I'll be coming back anytime soon based purely on taste. Although the ingredients are fresh and simple, I feel like this sandwich can be easily recreated at home-I prefer to go to places which are harder for me to recreate. read more

Pear, walnut, and prosciutto sandwich. Noms. The meat was some of the best I've had in a long time - the flavor and texture were on point - and everything was super fresh... Only thing that would have made it better was if the bread is toasted. The space and atmosphere feels Portlandesque as well, which was kind of a fun vibe. I have a love hate relationship with this place. I love that its SO incredibly delicious and insanely close to my work but I hate it for the very same reasons. Every weekday I am tempted by Finch's. I go to work dreaming about Pear & Prosciutto! Those brown paper packages tied up with string, these are a few of my favourite things! (Lol!) The "market" part of this place is pretty neat. I've bought a few things (quinoa, barley, yogurt-it's in the fridge!) and I like it because I can keep and re-use the mason jars. They've also started making their own lemonade. I've yet to try them but they seem pretty good (although pricey). I think it's just for the summer though. Their hazelnut lattes are also pretty darn amazing. They do have this funky looking ol' school espresso machine. It sort of looks like an overly tanned R2D2. No joke. I have photographic evidence. read more

I am in love with places that are nestled into a neighbourhood, and not part of a big strip of only commercial fronts. For Vancouver, it is increasingly rare to find these gems (Le Marche, Doc Lunch, Wilder Snail, Union Food Market, The Mighty Oak, Arbutus Coffee, and to some extent Adesso Bistro) This one utilizes a building that was known to me but had not been accessible to the public for decades. Inside it is old, original wood and has the look of what I imagine original Strathcona business in this space probably looked like. As for food,. if you know Finch's on Pender, this place is the same and offers superior sandwiches and salads, and limited breakfasts (all very good). The signature dish is the pear sandwich,.. a must have, and the avocado/walnut salad. Sure each item is around $10 but this is made of high quality ingredients by skilled people. This location also has a hipster style curated groceteria (canned and jarred stuff), but you can also get butter, eggs, veggies, and milk. Eating here is part meal,.. part submersion in true Strathcona neighbourhood vibe. Enjoy it, but don't tell too many people. (1 block from bike path, good bike rack location viewable right out the window) read more

Amazing sandwiches and espressos at an awesome location. Very secret in the middle of the residential area of Strathcona. Also has its own little market. I've even bought small amounts of vegetables that they didn't even had at the front of the shop where they grabbed me from the back because I needed it! I've seen them leaving pieces of bread after they close at the door, for the homeless. Amazing group of people run and work there. Lovely hipster decor and cool books and fresh flowers plus the amazing sandwiches. The only problem is that they close at 4 which makes it hard for me to go there days that I'm working. A stroll back into Vancouvers history here with Finch's second location - a corner cafe grocer. Located in the 660 Jackson red brick 1910 apt. building, with gorgeous old wood fashioned into a long cafe bar, the space is warm and cozy with original brick walls and reclaimed wood throughout. Their house coffee beans are roasted to satisfy the mature Vancouver coffee crowd, plus a simple baguettes, salad & soup menu typical of Finch's, as well as specialty groceries items. This is a terrible little piece of hipster hell where one is unable to buy an actual coffee, only overpriced "speciality" coffee which lacks caffeine, body, and flavor. You can also purchase a random assortment of groceries, as the pretense of this place is that it is like an old fashioned general store, because the homesteading pioneers had quite a taste for Martinellis, San Pelligrino and canned tomatoes. Also for your reading pleasure, an assortment of torn up Golden Books, so you can revisit your childhood...nope...just kidding...you can't, because some hipster offspring has torn out the majority of the pages. It is hard to balance "chic" and "comfortable." Le Marche St George does it perfectly. FInch's comes close, but falls on the Chic side. Not that I mind, especially if I'm just coming in for a quick sandwich (quite good, and delicious to behold) or americano. The decor is a throwback to a more simple time, with no hint of hipsterite irony. I enjoy my visits, but I wouldn't spend a few hours here - the seating is scarce, not terribly comfortable, and somewhat awkwardly positioned. It is worth a visit just to saddle up to the exquisite barstools...but they're immovably attached to the floor, so if you're of above-average height, expect to have your knees jammed against the bar. Finch's embodies the changes happening in Strathcona: Run-down houses and businesses are being remade with a strong aesthetic respect for the past. The question is whether they can maintain the sense of neighbourly and "lived in" comfort. In short, this is more of a cafe than a restaurant, and one worth visiting. read more

Cute little coffee shop that I stop into when working around in the area, one of the main reasons why I stop here is the décor and the super friendly staff. Been here twice and I finally mustered up the time to order the signature pear & prosciutto sandwich and I wasn't really overly impressed. The bread, walnuts, pears, and cheese were superb but the prosciutto combined with the other ingredients made the sandwich into a fatty, meat ball which turned me off of eating the rest of the sandwich.. I love Finch's for it's atmosphere, cuteness and wonderful sandwiches and tea. The coffee, however, needs improvement. They recently got a new espresso machine that looks wonderful but the coffee is just bad. I was there today and ordered a flat white. The woman did not know what it was - turns out it was her first day - but the woman supervising her also had no idea what a flat white was. I knew it wasn't going to be a great coffee and it wasn't. It was devoid of flavour. I also have tried their soup and it is simply awful, as described by another reviewer - thin and tasteless. How difficult is it to make good soup? I would also love to see more baking options to go with their tea (and coffee). Right now your only option is a large cookie. It would be great if they served macaroons or small biscotti. read more

I've been here more than a few times in the last couple of months because my coworker at the office got me hooked up on their coffee, cookies and soup. Yummy. Their soup here are different on a daily bases. I've had their tomato veggie and mushroom and basil before. Both were really good. There were a lot of stuffing in my soup. All veggies that they use in the soup are organic and you have to have the soup with a baguette. Their coffee is pretty strong for me. But I love how one of the ladies that work there can make really nice foam for my vanilla latte. (They also use this very cool looking machine). Even a small cup of latte which is like 12 oz, there's like 2 shots in it. I tend to tell them I want more milk and more vanilla or else I will go bouncing off walls at the office. Their chocolate chip cookie is what I always get. Even when I buy it in the afternoon, the chocolate in the middle are still very melty and cookies are like 2.25 which is average price. They also have the oatmeal, raisin and chocolate cookie. (Just writing up this review makes me want to get a cookie now). The only downside to this place is it's really stuffy if you plan on eating in. (I usually do take out cause my office is close by). When it's busy (like 3-4 people ahead of you) your wait time can be 10-15 mins if u get a sandwich or coffee. I also tried their sparkling homemade lemonade before too. It was way too sour for me. They have the concentration made in a jar with pulp and they pour like half of it over ice and they add sparkling water. It was still way too strong for me. I made mine into two drinks lol. Anyhow, I would still go to this coffee shop as long as it's still open. read more

My salad was good - in that I enjoyed the individual components like walnuts and avocado - but I could barely taste the dressing, and it didn't come together very well. Yes, Strathcona has become gentrified but it's still made up of mostly regular working class types who won't be eager to spend roughly $10 on a sandwich, (add a soup and drink and you're looking at close to $20). It's nice to see places like this popping up in the area but I think it needs to be more affordable if they hope to last. I'll be sticking to Benny's for sandwiches (right around the corner, been in the hood forever, great sandwiches, lower price, very nice people). read more

One of my go to place for lunch. It's in a quiet, tree lined neighborhood. Nice relaxed decor, shareable tables and high shelves with wooden sliding ladder, makes me want to climb up before my sandwich arrives everytime. Food is simple and surfficient.
