I'm very tempted to leave a one star review, but I'm adding a star because the staff was friendly, professional and personable and I feel confident in the doc. But, their business practices are disingenuous, at best. Up front, I was told my cost would be $54, including the $39 retinal imaging which is never, for some reason, covered by vision plans. This is about what I was expecting to pay. I was also told that if there were medical issues, those would be billed through my medical insurance and the extra copay would bring the cost up to $128. This 'medical issues' isn't explained at all, but I took it to mean that if they found something that required additional procedures, we'd have to go through my medical insurance, and that made sense to me. When we were done, I was given a quote for $700 for lenses and literally LOL'd. What the lady said next floored me: "Well, if we just get lenses that are covered by your vision plan...." What?! You didn't look for what my plan covered? And you didn't tell me that when you gave me the quote? Then, she says, "So, if we figure $400 for the frames..." I stopped her and pointed out that my plan only allowed $200 for frames. "Okay, then I guess we'll just do $200 frames..." So, they were looking at charging me ~$1,000 for lenses and frames they knew wouldn't be covered by my plan, even though they had my plan info. I told her I'd not be selecting anything today as frame selection is a process in which Wonder Wife must be involved. That's when the other lady said, "That will be $128." I asked why it wasn't $54, and she said 'because there were medical findings', so that would be the extra copay I had agreed to up front. When I asked her to explain that, she said if there are 'medical findings', that has to be billed through my health insurance. She had said that before, so I asked her if there was some sort of procedure that the doctor did that was specifically medical for which I was paying extra. "Well, the doctor found that you had the beginnings of cataracts, which need to be monitored. Cataracts aren't covered by your vision plan, and are medical." I asked "what procedure was it she did that I'm paying for?" and she said I was paying for the doctor's expertise, time and explanation. I said, "So, basically, I'm paying an extra $74 because she told me about something that might require a future procedure that wouldn't be covered by my vision plan. Would she have withheld this information if I didn't have health insurance?" By the way, this is information that any other optometrist in the world would tell you as part of an eye exam. When I refused to pay it, I could tell she was a little upset, but she handled it very well and simply said she understood and I paid the $54. She also gave me my printed prescription when i asked for it. I can't imagine any scenario where I'd come back here. read more

I am very pleased with my experience. I haven't had an eye exam since when I was young. I have recently experienced some vision problems. I found this little gem and it was top notch service. The staff was friendly and very welcoming. The technology and thoroughness of the examinations were quite exceptional. I was frantically searching for an exact duplicate of a pair of frames that I had broken in hopes I could avoid purchasing new lenses. Once we got my lenses fitted they took the extra time to heat mold the arms of my frames to my ears for me as well. I've been a patient of Dr. Minnick for several years now and really like her approach. She if the best eye doctor I've had (and I've seen quite a few eye Doctors since I was about 5). Her prescription works so well for me. It is very accurate, I have never experienced any headaches or felt like I needed to adjust to my new glasses. I've always had problems with my eyes. My astigmatism has gotten worse over the years and, to make it even more complicated, I've developed a dry eye. I work in finance and stare at several screens every single day. My condition deteriorated during the pandemic and my eyes were constantly red, I was addicted to OTC eye drops, and every single allergy made it so much worse. Came to see Dr. Minnick in December 2021 and with her treatment I feel like my eyes are in the best shape they've ever been (by April 2022)! I don't have any redness, itchiness, my lashes grew back etc. Not having problems with dry eye is so important to me that I can't thank Dr. Minnick enough. I seriously recommend it to everyone who is experiencing dry eye. Game changer for me. Also love the frame selection they have at Fine Eyewear. Clinical competence, but administrative baboonery. This review is written as an eye care patient. I have no recent experience getting my glasses there. Had my eye exam with Dr. Minnick a week ago. After the visit I asked the staff for an itemized receipt, for FSA purposes. I was refused; instead, I was told, I would be able to view it in the online patient portal after a few days. It is a week later and I do not see it there. I called FE and inquired, whereupon I was told they have to "unlock" the receipt before I can view it. I asked the person on the other end (a woman who did not identify herself) where exactly in the portal it can be found after "unlocking," and she said she didn't know. I asked her to get somebody on the line who did know, whereupon I was put on hold for 15 minutes. This is not an entirely isolated incident. In my previous visit (1.5 years ago) I was told my prescription would be available in the portal, only to have to call them and request delivery by email. As good as Dr. Minnick is, I think I will find a new eye doctor. read more

i believe this is the best eye doctor in Austin. I have been going there nearly 10 years and have always gotten best in class services and eyewear here. I was just in for an exam today and to buy new glasses as mine were accidentally damaged. I actually bought exactly the same frames and lenses. in addition to excellent medical eyecare, they have a full line of popular frames and lenses. I chose to go with custom frames created by this doctor herself (and her team) called F IN Eyewear. I love them and them. I decided to try some inexpensive online eyewear suppliers and I found out why they are cheap! The lenses I get from Fine Eyewear are dramatically better so returned them after learning my lesson. Last year my husband needed contacts. They ordered them we paid & two weeks later he went to pick them up & they weren't ordered. The staff was unapologetic. He decided never again! I didn't have that experience so I returned with my son this year. Our insurance changed so I called to see if they accept it and was told YES. I made our appointments & provided a picture of my new insurance card. 2 weeks later my son & I arrive & are asked if we want the additional test for $39 (not covered by insurance). I decline & she says "The doctor will want to do it on you." I decline. She says "No worries, it's fine." I'm told to sign an iPad. She stands over me & points where to sign "This is to get email and text, sign here and here" The iPad is jumping around & she keeps fixing it. I'm escorted to do 3 eye tests. They explain NOTHING. Then my son has the tests done. My SON says they only did TWO on him? The Dr. tells my son "I want you to get the daily wear which is better for your eyes and I'd like you to get glasses as well" so I asked "What is the $ difference between that & monthly wear?" I don't wear soft so I would love context. She looks & tells me it's $625 per year for daily and $250 per year for the monthly, insurance covers $150. I say "I can't afford that" she says "You don't have to pay for a full year up front & there's a rebate" I say "Can we just do the monthly?" She says "Yeah, fine." She says my son has to come back to learn how to put on contacts in 2 weeks since there's a holiday coming and I get my contacts then but HIS won't be ordered until next visit. So a month before he gets contacts? Why not then? I'm sure we will be charged for a 2nd visit! I go up to the desk and it's over $400 owed TODAY! I'm in disbelief! I ask what is the charges for? They say "Your eye exam, your sons exam and then your contacts but his will be charged later" What?! I've never paid this much and I ask to see the prices. Im told to come around and look at a screen. No print out and the charges aren't clear. It shows $140 for my contact exam, $80 for my sons contact exam and glasses exam and they say my contacts are $290. My contacts are $200 always! WHY is my exam more than my sons? They tell me my insurance covered 10%. I see that nowhere. I'm just baffled. So the lady at the counter tells me "There was a clerical error the prior year & I wasn't charged correctly. So I got something for free." I say "Well I would have liked to know because I expected to pay the same amount!" Its $283 for the exams alone! I tell them I'm calling my husband and go outside. I call my son to follow me and the lady says "This WASN'T A CLERICAL ERROR! YOUR INSURANCE Changed!" I return minutes later to pay for the exams, but I'm shaking. So the lady then states again that it was NOT a clerical error & it was my insurance change that caused the issue. So I say "I would have liked to know ahead of time" and she retorts "Well Ma'am that's not OUR job to check what your insurance will cover!" I'm shocked at this response because surely she doesn't think IM aware of what THEY charge! There's no price points available, the website says nothing about prices. I said "I gave you my new insurance card 2 weeks ago and confirmed that you take it!" She runs my card for the $283 (I still can't figure out how $140 and $80 is $283?) Then says "All I'm saying is in my 30 years of doing this, it has always been the responsibility of the customer to check their coverage." So I say "I'm so upset right now! I can't believe YOU'RE going to tell me how this is MY fault! This is horrible customer service!" She looks at me in shock. "All I want is my prescriptions so I can never come back here again." I say, and She hands me my receipt to sign. I ask how I'm gonna get my prescriptions? and she retorts "On the portal tomorrow". "What's the portal?" I ask. She says its on the website and we will send it to your email. So I'm paying for what today? I burst into tears "I'm sorry, okay? Maybe this IS MY fault, I didn't know!" Im crying like a fool. Then she tells me to stop crying and softens up. Hands me a tissue. The doctor who was there has left to the back. I'm bawling, telling them I just didn't expect this. She apologizes "She says she doesn't want to be that way" She verifies my email I say "Me either" she tells me my insurance is bad now and when enrollment comes, they can help me choose VSP? She keeps telling me not to cry. She tells me "Just stop crying and go have a nice dinner." I cry the way home. I check my insurance and it covers an exam for a $40 copay if in network. Still have no contact RX's just glasses we didn't want. The receipt is very worrying, and I'm having it reviewed by insurance and my credit card. I could not have known about these charges. They are a medical office and should be checking insurance and providing information about what you must pay out of pocket before starting. I think Dr. Minnick is a fantastic doctor! And, most of the staff is very pleasant to work with. I was in yesterday and was there the required 15 minutes ahead of time; and then had to wait an additional 35 minutes to be seen. I appreciate the time spend with me and I am sure that other patients do as well but that long of a wait is truly ridiculous. Then when I was checking out, I had "words" with the office manager in regards to my insurance. She treated me as though I was stupid and did not know or understand my own insurance. I have seen her do the same thing with fellow staff team members in the office. It's a shame that one person can give the whole atmosphere a bad vibe and it's not surprising that the turn- over of staff has been high (from what I see). Be careful about some of the frames you buy here. They don't tell you that after the 1 year warranty and something breaks you can't get them repaired. Hundreds of dollars down the drain. Since they were close to my house, I stopped in shortly after they opened. I was promptly and pleasantly greeted and within 10 minutes my glasses were repaired and I was on my way! My family and I have been going to Fine Eyewear and seeing Dr. Minnick for years. Even when I moved 3 & a half hours away for college, I continued to make the trip home for check ups. I won't go anywhere else. My favorite thing about Dr. Minnick is her patient education. You will never leave feeling like your appointment was rushed. She explains every test being done and why she does them. In my check up today, I learned all about floaters and retinal detachment, the many causes and how to fix such an issue. (not even an issue that I have, just one I was curious about) She gave me examples, so I can better understand. She even pulled up eye diagrams, visually explaining to me how and where floaters originate. I'm naturally a very curious person, so I love having a doctor who is happy to answer all my questions and really enjoys chatting with me. Her staff is great as well. Likely the worst scheduling and support I've come across swith horrible customer service. To the owner: If you pay your support staff more than the minimum wage, they might be able to tell time and be less pretentious jerks about their obvious lack of knowledge in that "big hand, little hand" confusion. If you are already paying more, you're paying way too much. Detail: On the phone person, "OK, you're all set for Tuesday, 2:00pm. You'll get a link for our very extensive multi-page application, it would help if you have it completed when you arrive." I show up Tuesday at 2pm. "No sir, it's next Tuesday." Me, "can you fit me in today?" (Chuckles), "no sir." Neither of the front office folk looked at the schedule, Check anything, didn't offer to do anything, or give me a card with my appt time. "OK my mistake," I thought. I'll show next week for the 2pm appt. The Following week: I show for my appt at 2pm. Support person, "I see your appointment was at 1pm". I said, "you're kidding, right? I was here last week at 2, and you said nothing." "Yeah. We sent you a text, you should have known." "Can you get me in now?" (Chuckles), "no." OK, you pretentious minimum wager. I recently had an eye exam and needed some new glasses. I went to see a new doctor and while I LOVED him, the service in the optical department was...meh. So I decided to take my script and head elsewhere. I tried two of the well-known glasses spots...you know, the ones that offer two for one, or half off, and do your lenses in house. To say I was unimpressed is an understatement. At one place I was "greeted" (use the term loosely) by an associate on a personal call. I asked if they carried Versace frames. She said no then waved to the store, "You can look around." She then went back to her personal call. Nope. I walked out. I received a similar type of service at another place. I was zero for three that day and very frustrated. I resorted to good ole' Yelp, and was lucky to find this place. It was not close, it was not convenient, but after speaking to Davin for five minutes on the phone, I was sold. Poor thing...I am sure I sounded flustered and bit angry at the three icky experiences I had that morning. I NEED glasses to see...it is am important purchase and it need to to be as important to the people I am buying them from. Again, Davin was great on the phone and talked me off of my ledge. :-) I headed over there and he and Samantha were even more wonderful in person. They were very patient with me and allowed me to try on a LOT of frames. I also greatly appreciated their honesty. They were not trying to talk me into the most expensive frames at all...they were helping me find what truly looked the best on my face. They helped me pick out my frames and took extra care to make sure everything was a perfect fit as far as my prescription and my progressives. Yes, you might spend a bit more here than at "lenses are us," but I will do it time and time again for the incredible personal service that went along with it. I've purchased two pair of glasses here, and I know I'll keep coming back. The frame selection is limited, but they do carry lots of top designer brands. What they really excel at is customer service. This summer, I picked out a frame and gave them my prescription from another eye doc. The frames I selected were currently out-of-stock at their distributor, so I was told I had to wait 3 weeks for them to arrive. I wasn't happy about it, but I waited. Their saleswoman bent over backwards trying to get me the frames sooner, even offering to get them in brown instead of black, then switching the lenses out when the black frames arrived. Many follow-up phone calls ensued to make sure I was happy. Once I had them on my face, they had to be adjusted a few times to conform to my apparently twisted visage. Every time I went in for an adjustment (3x), the staff were very helpful and friendly about it. Eventually, the only person who could get them to fit right was a man named Johnny. The staff was super nice and offered something to drink as I filled out my paperwork. Dr. Vanessa Tran Minnick was wonderful. When I started coughing up a storm she didn't cringe but instead offered me some cough drops. Besides being sweet she also took the time to explain my vision changes and the condition of my eyes to include the bear tracks that are on my eyes (apparently they are freckles on the back of your eyes, weird).
