The hotel is very historic and cool on the inside with big rooms and a great vibe. The motor lodge where we stayed - not so much. The walls are painted cinder block and the rest is it is quite dated. My biggest complaint though is the walls are super thin. Our neighbor was watching TV loudly and despite calls from the front desk, it wasn't clear if it was our neighbor to the left, right or below. Then in the morning, we could hear musicians at the upcoming Irish festival practicing through the bathroom ceiling. That part was actually cooler than the TV noise but still evidence of the lack of insulation. read more

You have to stay in the Finlen at least once. You're sure to have something unusual occur whether it's in the lounge, having coffee in the grand lobby, or just checking in. I can't help thinking of Dashiel Hammett when I'm carrying my valise down the long hallway to my room. The place, like much of Butte, is redolent of history. The beds are comfortable, the sheets smell fresh, the shower is hot, and even with a little TV on the wall and a charge port by the bed, your dreams will be of a bygone time. The only thing I'd change is to put drapes on the windows, because even though it'd kill the film noire buzz that the blinds create, there's just too much light at night if your room is streetside. Then again, maybe you're staying up all night. read more

We spent one night at the Finlen. The architecture and lobby are very impressive. Our room was dated, but spacious and the bed was comfortable. The water pressure was good although the drain had a hard time keeping up. There is a free parking lot at the building. There are a few restaurants within walking distance. Check-in and out was quick. The bartender was friendly. I would have no concerns about staying here again if I happened to be in Butte. read more

The Finlen Hotel opened in 1924 and it stands at a downtown intersection where architecture buffs can drool at this and other magnificent buildings that are legacies of the early 20th century copper boom. Butte's historic district wouldn't seem out of place if it were picked up then plucked down in some old northeastern cities. It seems caught in time. As I passed through on a Sunday morning, the streets were almost entirely devoid of people. (I think I saw four in the span of 90 minutes.) To see such an array of buildings sitting empty or employed for uses that miss their collective potential, I later met a few folks that remarked 'Butte is just going to be Butte'. Cities across the United States are changing but Butte seems content to avoid the rush. read more

When you see all the beautiful pictures of the hotel rooms, don't get suckered into thinking that is what you booked! You could be stuck in the motor inn! Cinderblock walls and no way to control the heat. if you manage to shut your eyes, it won't be for long with the slamming doors and traffic just outside. if you want to upgrade to the inside, it will cost 30% more. Not to mention the room we had wasn't clean. Hair on the floor and stains on the carpet. I will never book here again! read more

I'm scratching my head on this one. We went here because of all the great reviews and we love historic locations. But, as much as I try, I can't love this place. I do credit the ability to keep this place in decent condition. I suspect it is a fairly costly maintenance. I also acknowledge seriously competitive rates offering a 'suite' for about $100. However, the suite we had was just two single hotel rooms joined together with a door between. Very funky layout with a bed in both rooms, but nothing to sit on other that two chairs from a mini dining table. Other than the rooms each having flat screen TVs, there was little to notice for modernization. The two room suite, for instance, had a single window air conditioner which was on the window furthest from the 2nd room, meaning it only could cool one of the rooms. The room also had a dusty/musty smell which hampered allergies. Oftentimes these little items are tempered when you have an excellent front desk staff. Not so here. Check-in was with a surly lady who was more interested in watching her portable DVD than in greeting us and accommodating our questions. All in all, I'd say that the best thing going for the Finlen is it's location. If you want go to one of the local downtown restaurants or bars while being able to walk back to your hotel, then this is the place (don't be afraid of the adjacent Motor Inn, it may be a better value). For us, next time in Butte we will look at one of the B&Bs or even one of the newer chain hotels along the freeway. read more

This is not a hotel for everyone, but I loved the place. It's old, it's historic, the staff was great, the rooms were large (we were given a suite with two bathrooms for the price of a double room), and the historic district in which it sits is fascinating and deserves a good look around. Don't miss the historic photos of celebs who stayed or dined there in the past, including JFK while he was still a senator. We were able to walk to both dinner and breakfast and there is plenty of free parking on the site. Oh, and the windows open! (They also have AC if that's your pref.) Who wouldn't like it? If you are addicted to new and generic, need a spa, gym, or room service, well there is likely a better place--though I am not sure which it would be. But for us, the Finlen was perfect and I'd gladly stay there again. read more

We had a beautiful wedding in the Treasure State Room. If you are an Art Deco fanatic like myself, this is the place to go! The architecture is absolutely stunning. You can just imagine Butte in it hayday. The staff was very accommodating. The rooms are clean and newly redone. However, they are not sound proof. This place was built in 1924 and financed by James Finlen, a very wealthy copper mining magnate. Copper is used on the roof, to adorn one of the bars, and on the windows outside. The grand ballroom has huge ceilings, crystal chandeliers and almost floor to ceiling windows. This hotel was obviously glamorous in its heyday, and has had guests from Charles Lindberg, Theodore Roosevelt, Nixon and Kennedy. It is still fairly well preserved, and is a fascinating place to stay. I think it is the duty of every American to visit Butte, and pump in some cash to help the important and unique heritage of this town. Butte must be saved and kept for future generations! read more

I'm putting 5 for service. Called around because motel 6 screwed us over. The women who picked up the phone here was eager to help to offer other places and then realized she could help us. We drive at night so we needed a hotel from 8am-4pm. We got a 1 bedroom for $74.00. She even put us in a corner so we could have some sleep from the maids cleaning other rooms. Bed is comfy (even flipped it for a bed bug check) 70's looking which my boyfriend loved. Shower head pressure was better than some nice hotels but not amazing. Had 3 towels Bar of soap, shampoo Flat screen tv Natural lighting The actual lobby is beautiful Iron, ironing board, hair dryer No microwave, fridge , coffee machine For being a last minute choice, it was great. read more

In mid-September I stayed a night in the main hotel with none of the problems mentioned by others. It was a clean and quiet room with all the modern amenities (flat screen & wifi). The staff was friendly and the hotel, historic and beautiful. Parking in the lot is limited but street parking met my needs. Very convenient to the Uptown businesses. Butte is trending the right direction. I believe that unless all we want is Ramada, we should support those with the courage to keep the old hotels alive. read more

Man, I love this place. I went here last year when Stefanie S. and I were driving cross-country to Seattle and we arrived in Butte late in the evening and completely beat. We went to the Finlen since it was highly recommended by our AAA guide. It was not actually all that hard to find it despite our fatigue and the fact that it was located in the middle of unfamiliar downtown Butte since it had a giant, lit-up, retro-historic HOTEL sign above it. =) We stayed at the motel attached to the shiny hotel since we were poor and the Butte Irish Music Festival was in town and took up every single room in the city---though the manager was really friendly and managed to finagle a room for us. The hotel facilities were beautiful and took us back to the days when we weren't born yet; the lobby still had wi-fi, though. The motel itself was not too shabby and definitely the best motel we've stayed at during our cross-country trip both in value and in comfort. If I ever go back to Butte again I will definitely be staying at the Finlen. read more

Lovely building, clean room and sweet front desk clerk. I do wish the building had more furniture from it's heyday or a little coffee shop. There's an old sign from it's early days inside indicating there once was one. It does feel a bit forgotten but so does the town and there's something sort of lovely about how old and untouched it all is. It just needs a tiny bit of tender loving care to return it to it's glory. Truly though, grateful to have been able to stay in such an old and beautiful building and will return if I'm ever close to Butte again. read more

I couldn't disagree more. One reviewer writes "The rooms were very cheap and no frills but that is sort of what Butte is all about." No - the point of Butte is a city that was at the turn of the century larger than Portland OR, but due to an economic downfall has remained a wonderfully well preserved representation of a by-gone era. Butte has remarkable architecture and preserved details that were long ago destroy via replacement in other towns. The lobby is nice. That's it. The furniture on the mezzanine looks to have come from goodwill. (and i'm not just being colorful, it really does) The room we got was dinky, finished in obvious "home depot/DIY" cheap fixtures - the valences were made from particle board; how is that the nicest hotel you've ever stayed in?? What kind of cardboard box in a back alley do you regularly stay at that makes you swoon over particle board interior design?? This building has so much potential but sadly like many things in Butte, the owners don't recognize it. The attached discount cheapy motel ruins the building, as does converting most of the "tower" into low rent apartments. There is a great space that used to be a coffee shop according to the wonderful old sign, that they're schlepping for lease as a business space - look for an AM FAM insurance agent to be there soon. You can stay at the copper king mansion bread and breakfast, and next time I am in butte I shall, and there are other B&B that appear to be a much better value than this place. Hopefully some day someone restores this grand old lady back to what she was meant to be. read more

In town for one night. Called based on recommendation of a friend and was told no problem, since the hotel portion was empty. Since it was empty, asked for an upgrade and was told no. I was tired, so I said fine, I just would take any room. Dragged my stuff in and up to my room. Opening the door revealed that there were no sheets on the bed. Went back down and was told that there still no unpgrade, I asked for refund and went to Best Western, much nicer. Glad others had good experience, but there's lots of choices and how you're treated is as important as the room (within reason). I guess their customer service is the reason their empty. read more

A historic hotel, motel, and apartment complex in downtown Butte, the Finlen is the place to stay when in town. The rooms were very cheap and no frills but that is sort of what Butte is all about, straight to the point. The bed was comfy, there was an Eames chair in the room (!!!), and we got a good view of this overlooked mountain town. The staff was polite and knowledgeable when it came to all of the questions we asked about the history of the hotel and town. Be sure to stay in the hotel part (the tower) and not the motel, it is worth the extra money. Also, the bar in the building is nothing short of stunning, great decorations that have been untouched since the 60s... you can tell that this place has seen it's heyday and is ready for another soon. Be sure to talk with the local residents when you're at the bar, they are full of interesting stories about the hotel and the area (very history conscious). read more

I was raised in Butte back when the town was busy. Uptown was the place to be and the Finlen was a big part of the uptown scene. I have stayed at the Finlen at least 20 times since leaving Butte in the 70's. It is the only place I will stay. It is quiet and some of the rooms are spacious- some are not. It is clean. I only stay in the tower. The Finlen is 90 years old and I think it's probably been hard for the owners to turn a profit in Butte and keep this hotel open. Historically, if you want a slice of Butte and her history, stay here. It is a short walk to some of the most fascinating history and architecture in the west. If that kind of thing doesn't interest you- there are plenty of motels on the flats by the interstate. read more

I have stayed here numerous times due to co-workers desire to stay in uptown Butte. This place is the pits. No coffee, fridge nor microwave in the room. No breakfast in the morning either. Whatever money is saved over a chain hotel is quickly lost due to having to buy breakfast, coffee etc. Another disappointment is the horrible internet service, it is just about nonexistent except around 4am. Joy. When I travel by myself I stay at the Best Western, the room is always much nicer and the BW has all the amenities that every other hotel I stay at manage to provide, I mean it's the standard everywhere I've ever been except for this place. This is the best hotel I've ever stayed in. There isn't any room service or fancy breakfast but The Finlen gets major points for awesome job it does preserving the historical aspects of this great building. There are different types of rooms so be sure to ask what kind you will be getting. I was surprised to check in and find that my room was HUGE! I had a bedroom complete with vanity, dining table and a spacious bathroom but also had a living room! There was a microwave and fridge so I didn't have to eat out every day and could store things like cold drinks, fruit and some microwave snacks. Kathy at the front desk is so sweet and they will do anything to make sure your stay is comfortable. The rates are extremely affordable as well! read more

Yikes. I was booked to stay here on a business trip and switched hotels after the first night. It was clean(ish) but that's my only positive comment. You couldn't see out the windows, and it had threadbare sheets, concrete walls, and wet, moldy carpet outside the room, accented by charming metal buckets to collect cigarette butts...? The first room they put me in smelled so strongly of mildew I knew I couldn't sleep in it, so I was offered another room in the motor inn area. The light for the bathroom was connected to an incredibly loud fan, and the internet service was nonexistent. Finally, they charged me $94, the government room rate. Outrageous rate for a really terrible room. The next day, I was grateful to pack my bag to move to the Holiday Inn Express with a large, clean, quiet room with a view of mountains, good internet connection, free breakfast and coffee in the room. read more

I bet Butte was a grand city in its heyday. We loved walking around the dowtown are and seeing the preserved buildings with the faded signs on their exterior walls. The hotel lobby is a beautiful throwback to it's roots, I love the pictures and old menus from the past in the hallway headed towards the parking lot. The old elevator still moves once the door opens, which is quite shocking at first, but we grew to appreciate it. The room itself was nothing to write home about, but it was comfortable and clean. I wish it had some of the original decor like the lobby but it was a nice place to stay for a night during our cross country trip. I think it's great to stay in an old hotel now and again, the Finlen Hotel has character. Chain hotels have their place, but can get bland, this hotel has history, also it's centrally located to restaurants (Uptown across the street is delicious!) bars and coffee shops. The parking lot was safe and convenient and the Motor Inn section was packed with travelers! We enjoyed it and recommend it for a pit stop. read more

So i stayed at the hotel. I had called and checked to see if I could get a later checkout as I wouldn't be arriving till almost 10 pm. I'm in town for business and knew I would be wanting to rest most of the day. I called and they stated that's fine for a later afternoon checkout. The girl who took the reservation and checked me in was the only good experience. The room was very warm and only a ceiling fan to cool it off. It's an older building but was uncomfortable. It also was rather noisy hearing traffic. I got breakfast in the morning and then was informed if not out by 1 pm I would be charged. Woman at desk with glasses wasn't particularly nice not horrible but when I checked out I said I'm not very happy about this. She said well we have to get the room ready. The hotel is nearly empty and has plenty of rooms available so it was her choice not to make the accommodation for a first time guest. I will not be back. The hotel has some charm but even the shower was at best warm and did not get hot. Only good interaction was the young lady who checked me in. Hope they get better. read more

The Finlen was pretty cool - very historical and nostalgic of an earlier time. The uptown area of Butte in general is awesome. The rooms are basic yet clean. The walls must be pretty thin because I heard some noise throughout the night coming from the bar across the street. Not a deal breaker, but it wasn't the best night's sleep ever. read more

This place is great! My folks (dad raised in Butte) come back here and stay often with friends. We joined the party this year and couldn't have asked for a better venue.
