The Finlen Hotel opened in 1924 and it stands at a downtown intersection where architecture buffs can drool at this and other magnificent buildings that are legacies of the early 20th century copper boom. Butte's historic district wouldn't seem out of place if it were picked up then plucked down in some old northeastern cities. It seems caught in time. As I passed through on a Sunday morning, the streets were almost entirely devoid of people. (I think I saw four in the span of 90 minutes.) To see such an array of buildings sitting empty or employed for uses that miss their collective potential, I later met a few folks that remarked 'Butte is just going to be Butte'. Cities across the United States are changing but Butte seems content to avoid the rush.

This is a beautiful historic hotel. The rooms are large. While the rooms still have historic charm, they have modern amenities. The beds are very comfortable. The public spaces of the hotel are beautiful, and have been well maintained.

I'm scratching my head on this one. We went here because of all the great reviews and we love historic locations. But, as much as I try, I can't love this place. I do credit the ability to keep this place in decent condition. I suspect it is a fairly costly maintenance. I also acknowledge seriously competitive rates offering a 'suite' for about $100. However, the suite we had was just two single hotel rooms joined together with a door between. Very funky layout with a bed in both rooms, but nothing to sit on other that two chairs from a mini dining table. Other than the rooms each having flat screen TVs, there was little to notice for modernization. The two room suite, for instance, had a single window air conditioner which was on the window furthest from the 2nd room, meaning it only could cool one of the rooms. The room also had a dusty/musty smell which hampered allergies. Oftentimes these little items are tempered when you have an excellent front desk staff. Not so here. Check-in was with a surly lady who was more interested in watching her portable DVD than in greeting us and accommodating our questions. All in all, I'd say that the best thing going for the Finlen is it's location. If you want go to one of the local downtown restaurants or bars while being able to walk back to your hotel, then this is the place (don't be afraid of the adjacent Motor Inn, it may be a better value). For us, next time in Butte we will look at one of the B&Bs or even one of the newer chain hotels along the freeway.

Great place! The…read morerooms were very clean (though they could probably use some updating). The hotel staff were all extremely helpful and welcoming. The free hot breakfast is quite good. It's got everything you'd want - eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, cereal, toast, waffles, juices, fruit, I could go on and on. Literally the only thing I could complain about was that the water pressure to the bathroom sink was incredibly weak - it was hard to really wash your hands thoroughly. But I guess this was balanced out by the water pressure in the shower, which was probably as strong as a prison hose shower (not that I'd know from experience....) Plus it's right on Harrison so it's close to any store or fast food place you could ever want. Would definitely stay here again!

Decent room, or so we thought. We went to take a shower before going to bed and found used soap and…read moresoap wrappers in the shower. Gross! We have a therapy dog (a real one) and they still charged us an extra $15 for her. I'll have to take this up with Best Western main offices as it is against Federal Law to charge for a service animal with documentation. The blinds in the room (blackout) worked so well that they wouldn't go up. They are on a remote control (no manual controls) and it was not working. It's a non smoking hotel and there was a TON of cigarette smoke in the hallway to our room. On the good side: we requested a room on bottom floor near an exit. This was provided. The front desk personnel were pleasant, although when asking for a steakhouse recommendation, stated they were not permitted to recommend anything except the pancake house attached. The bed was comfortable and the shower was roomy.

We were on a long Montana trip and ended up needing to spend the night in Butte. I didn't expect a lot from a Ramada but Whyndham is decent, right? They are considered a step up from a pure budget motel, right? Wrong. From the moment we checked in, I complete regretted choosing this place. It was late and we just wanted to get our kids to bed yet the front desk person demanded IDs from me AND my wife. They then photocopied them and put them in a box on the desk and said they will keep them for 3 years. What in the world? I have NEVER had a hotel do that. They're worried about guests taking something from the room or damaging them somehow. Guess what? There is literally NOTHING worth taking in any of these rooms. And they already look like they are damaged! The entire hotel is extremely run down, dilapidated, grungy. The hallways are dark, musty. Garbage cans are overflowing with trash. If you know what 'The Backrooms' are, well, this is it! The bedrooms are sparse, which is fine but the beds, towels, everything, are just old and tired. The mattress was the old school spring type with worn out springs. Absolutely the worst mattress I have slept on in many years. Surprisingly, it wasn't as terrible as I thought it was going to be. Luckily, we were all tired enough from our long day driving that we slept ok, though I was worried about my truck getting broken into in the sketchy parking lot. It was fine. They offer free breakfast but we had absolutely no desire to eat at this place and got up early and got the heck out of there. I went to the front desk and requested that they turn over the copies of our drivers licenses that they were keeping in a flimsy, unlocked plastic box on the front desk. The front desk attendant told me this is a Montana law and all hotels do it (baloney!) but after I insisted, reluctantly handed them over. I absolutely do not recommend anyone ever stay here. I also most likely will never stay at a Ramada or maybe even any hotel under the Wyndham brand after this experience. How in the world Wyndham corporate lets this dirty dive bear the Wyndham name is beyond me. Yes, it was that bad. If you find yourself in Butte, Montana, stay anywhere but here. I didn't take many photos of this place but you can check out the couple I snapped of the inside of the room with the wallpaper peeling off the wall. That should give you an idea :|
